Two killed on Hwy 5AThe two people deceased were occu-
pants of an SUV that collided head-onwith an Arrow Transport
tractor-traileron Hwy 5A near Roche Lake Rd., onWednesday. The
vehicle came to rest inthe ditch after the impact, then
explodedinto flames. Both the deceased wereejected from the
vehicle. The truck driv-er wasnt injured, but he was shaken up.He
was hauling hog fuel from Merritt toKamloops when he entered the
blindcurve and found the SUV on-coming inhis lane. By then it was
too late.
Investigating officers said police had
received a traffic complaint about a SUV afew minutes prior to
the report of the col-lision. There was also a report of a
vehicletearing through a construction zone,ignoring flagger
warnings. The vehicledrove over pylons and almost struck flag-gers
at 2 locations. Witnesses said theoccupants appeared to be spaced
rightout. Police are investigating whether itwas the same vehicle
in all the incidents.
RCMP end theft spreeYesterday 8am, Merritt RCMP
responded to a call of a vehicle with pos-sible stolen
snowmobiles at theComstock exit. While attempting toapproach the
vehicle, it drove away,heading towards Vancouver on the Coq.Several
police vehicles were in the area
& attended. The vehicle drove to theColdwater exit where it
stopped,dumped the trailer & snowmobiles, thendid a u-turn
& headed north for 10km,drove off the highway onto a dirt
roadfor several hundred metres until itended. Three people exited
the vehicle,and a 30-year old woman & 31-year oldman from the
Lower Mainland wereapprehended with the help of RCMPdog services
& helicopter support.RCMP emergency response team wascalled to
assist, as it was believed thatthe 3rd person was carrying a
handgun.
A few hours later, RCMP receivedreports from several truck
drivers that 2young men had exited the bush justsouth of Comstock
& were flaggingdown traffic. An 18-year old & 20-yearold
were arrested, and police found 2 other trucks that had been
abandoned earli-er in the day both were stolen from Kamloops the
night before. Investigation haslinked these 2 to the others, and
the stolen vehicles. A 5th male is still believed to
be at large. He is described as approx. 26 years old, tall
Caucasian with short darkhair. Police believe he will head back to
the Lower Mainland.
Seven B&Es were reported in Kamloops the previous night. All
items from thebreak and enters were recovered amongst the 3
vehicles, including a trailer with 2snowmobiles, a quad, 3 dirt
bikes, loggin truck tires, a U-Haul trailer with a bobcat,as well
as several small items: tools, tv, and other misc. items totaling
over $100,000.
Police wish to thank the public of all their input, as they were
able to make thearrests and recover the stolen property thanks to
the assistance from passers-by.
