Bss Cst r-cCuriosity got the best of me and I at-
tended the Bass Coast festival... what FUN!First impression:
Woodstock wannabe
with electronic music. Second impression:A giant playground
party for over-19s.You could dress up, play games (giantKerplunk,
Jenga, Twister), enjoy prettysights, wear pretty lights, have your
facepainted, talk to everyone, make newfriends, hug new friends, be
kind toeveryone, be creative, enjoy others' cre-ativity, go for a
time-out in the Sanctuaryif you need it, eat gummie bears, be
your-self or anyone or anything you feel like
being You could buy funky stuff, eatfun food, dance to amazing
electronicmusic I especially enjoyed the live
electroswing dancefloor set of wonky,speakeasy-style
permaculture ukulelequirk, The Formidable Vegetable Soundsys-tem
from Australia. You could chill in agroovy retreat to enjoy your
fresh fruitsmoothie, take a yoga class, be dazzled byfantastic fire
and hoop dancers, and more!
I returned home feeling young and re-freshed, and I revived my
orange, purpleand lime green harem pants and ven-tured into the
night of Bass Coast Sun-day. I found a black & white party at
theSlay Bay Stage in the woods, dancers infabulous & outrageous
costumes, musicat all three stages, and the site was alightwith art
installations, food vendors &venues, and people the whole scene
had a fantastic carnival feel.
Even the campgrounds were a treat to behold, funky with banners,
prayer flags, andcolourful sarongs. There was a much kinder,
gentler vibe than Id found at the Merritt
Mountain Music Fests Id attended in the past. The former
notorious campsite C nodifferent now than A & B cool and
mellow. Campers were encouraged to pack outwhat they packed in,
plenty of recycling bins, and many vendors requested
bring-your-own-beverage-cups, making a much more
environmentally-friendly festival. And all, asone festee put it,
within a "hug from the hills" of our beautiful Coldwater River
valley.
Only criticism: The site felt too spread-out, due perhaps to an
attendance that was-nt quite what they were hoping for. But if Bass
Coast returns to Merritt next year,Im sure attendance will be up,
and Im hoping more locals will get into the spirit.
The biggest treat? Every young person I spoke to was a delight.
Not one loud,drunken, inappropriate, wanna-be cowboy in sight! And
