A message from Patrick Bergstedt, President, Asia Pacific, MSD

Dear Colleagues,

A very Happy New Year to you and your loved ones as we usher in 2012.

First, let me thank you for the immense passion, energy and commitment you invested in MSD last year. Through your contribution, 2011 was a good year for us overall in Asia Pacific (AP). Indications are encouraging that we are likely to have achieved our 2011 operating income goals (although results won’t be out until later in January). I’m very happy to say that we maintained the excellent momentum of our business across the region, through our market share for key brands and above-market growth in most countries.

If there is one word to summarize 2012, it is “challenging”. We will continue to face price cuts that will exert extreme cost pressure on our business, as well as a very tough environment in the face of global economic uncertainty – but this should never deter us from our vision to become the healthcare leader in Asia. Our volume of business in each and every AP country is projected to be sizeable across 2012–2016. And I want to emphasize again that our fundamentals are very sound indeed – a testimony to the great foundation you’ve all built across the region – and one which you should feel good about.

I also want to stress another key point. Innovation is crucial to our success, today and tomorrow. In an era of patent cliffs and generics, innovation cannot come solely from products, as it did before. It must now come from how we interact with our customers every day – be they patients, payers, prescribers, or governments – and how we can provide incremental and superior value.

How do we achieve our goals? Our AP strategic priorities (“AP House”) remain firmly aligned with the four pillars of the Company’s overall Emerging Markets strategy:

In-line Core Brands • Achieve market leadership in key therapeutic

areas: diabetes, atherosclerosis, hepatitis, women’s health, and vaccines

New Product Launches• Accelerate time to market• Flawless execution

Diversified Brands• Portfolio marketing and sales• Strategic alliances• Trade channel management• Commercial capabilities

Innovative Branded Generics• Develop new country strategies and business

models to launch and commercialize innovative branded generics

I’m relying on each and every one of you to make all this happen, and I’m firmly committed to building your capability and managing all the talent we have in this Company. In the next few months, you’ll hear more about this commitment with the forthcoming MSD University and other integrated learning and development programs.

In conclusion, I’m very energized by all the opportunities and the challenges ahead of us. I expect us to drive growth together. I expect you to be passionate about serving your customers, always. And I want you to act with speed and urgency. Of course, in doing all this, you must also conduct your business in the right way, commensurate with our MSD Values and Standards. Together, as a team, we can achieve our vision to become the healthcare leader in Asia.

Be well.

MSD will be expanding its presence in Singapore through new manufacturing, marketing and research investments over the next 10 years.

Under an agreement signed with the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), MSD will invest over US$250 million over the next ten years in site improvements at its manufacturing facilities in Tuas, Singapore, expanding its biotech operations, adding technology capability to support new product launches and committing to new expenditures of S$700 million on local research activities. MSD will also help to further develop the skills and broaden the technical expertise of its Singapore-based workforce through collaborations with local universities and training opportunities at other MSD facilities around the world.

Willie Deese, Executive Vice President and President, MMD, said: “MSD is pleased to expand its already substantial operations in Singapore with new, far-reaching commitments that will support MSD’s global mission of meeting patient needs with innovative medicines for use around the world.”

Leaders look ahead to 2012 and urge their sites to scale to greater heights in the new year

Challenges and Opportunities in 2012

Gaetan AngohManaging DirectorMMD Singapore

The new year brings new opportunities and challenges. And the biggest challenge is to turn these challenges into more opportunities to drive the Company’s growth.

Against the backdrop of a Singapore economy that’s expected to be slowing down and a highly competitive and regulated marketplace, MSD Human Health will be launching several new products, including ElONVA and VICTRElIS, in 2012. It will be an exciting and intriguing year!

I believe we can overcome these obstacles by focusing our efforts and resources on driving the performance of our key franchises to grow the business.

To achieve launch excellence, flawless execution is fundamental, particularly in priming and preparing the market well in anticipation of the launch.

Also, in this competitive climate, we must continue to demonstrate the value of our products and services to become the preferred partner for our customers.

I look forward to a year of extraordinary opportunities and accomplishments. We have the people and the portfolio. Ignited by passion and energy, we will work together to achieve our vision of becoming the leading healthcare company in Singapore.

2012 will be an exciting year ahead!

2011 was a year full of big and exciting changes. On the corporate level, we celebrated the inclusion of the Singapore site into the Commercial Operation Network. On the local level, we continued to recognize our long-time partnership with the Singapore Economic Development Board. These are important and delightful changes to ensure the long-term future of MSD in Singapore.

We continued to perform well for three of our KPIs, namely Delivery Performance, Profit Plan, and Value Capture and Deviation reduction targets. I thank all of you for the tremendous achievements that you have contributed to these three areas. We have had numerous regulatory audits and have done extremely well in all of them. However, we were unable to meet the Safety KPI on lost Time Injury Rate and Recordable Injury Rate, and I urge all colleagues to continue to work safely and remain vigilant.

looking forward, in 2012, we will continue to focus on our business priorities of Compliance, Supply and Profit Plan and implementing and supporting our strategy in:

•EmbracingMerckProductionSystem(MPS)andCoreInclusion

•Workingtogetherasacross-functionalteamandasOneMSD

•Increasingefficiencyinourcoststructure

•Executenewproductintroductionflawlessly

Together, we will work hand in hand to continue our journey to reach our goals of Target 15.

last of all, I would like to wish you and your family a Happy New Year.

2011 was a challenging year for all of us. As we welcome 2012, Shared Business Services (SBS) is excited to embark on the next phase of our journey – “Breakthrough”. We are gearing ourselves to support the various exciting opportunities that lie ahead of us. We have established collaborative and transparent partnerships with our business partners and clients. SBS will continue in our efforts to provide value-added service offerings and to extend beyond multifunctional and divisional scopes.

The areas that we will be focusing on in 2012 include meeting services, analytics and support for our clients’ business transformation initiatives. We’ll also be accelerating functional, divisional and cultural realization – towards the common goal of making 2012 another successful and stunning year for MSD and SBS.

Sanjay PatelExecutive Director, Shared Business Services, Asia Pacific/Japan

2011 was a year of unprecedented change for Merck Research laboratories (MRl). Discovery and Preclinical Sciences (DPS) implemented a new operating model with a commitment to invest in innovation while managing costs. A key element of this model is collaboration with external research partners to deliver products to market in a new and more flexible manner.

Over the past two years, the Translational Medicine Research Centre (TMRC) has developed an externalization framework with local Singapore-based research partners and, as such, it is leading the way in implementing this new operating model. MSD’s recent commitment of S$700 million expenditure on local research activities represents a huge boost in confidence for research in Singapore and demonstrates the commitment MRl is making to innovation. This investment represents a unique opportunity for MRl to develop research collaborations in Singapore.

In 2012, to ensure we realize this opportunity, TMRC will focus to work collaboratively and as one team with internal and external partners to leverage the investment in our research capabilities, increase the number of projects and franchise support while continuing to add value by enabling early-stage MRl pipeline decisions. Change is never easy, but with determination, commitment, teamwork and a flexible collaborative approach focused on activities to impact the pipeline, I am confident that our talent at TMRC will scale to new heights in the coming year.

The Asia Pacific is the region with the largest aquaculture production in the world. Capture fishery is expected to decline and aquaculture is set to become a key source of sustainable animal protein to meet the demands of a growing world population. We are in a unique position to tap this growth opportunity with our commitment towards finding solutions for the aquaculture industry.

2012 will be an eventful year for Intervet Norbio Singapore, with several products developed by the site coming to fruition. I believe that these products will have positive impact on the aquaculture industry,

and that by maintaining focus on product development with our

customers’ needs in mind, we will continue to make a difference to the industry.

Lisa Shipley, Vice President, Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics and Drug Metabolism (PPDM), who is based in West Point, United States, visited the Translational Medicine Research Centre (TMRC) at Biopolis from 25 to 28 October 2011.

PPDM, part of the Merck Research laboratories Discovery and Preclinical Sciences (DPS) organization, was recently formed by the merger of Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics, Molecular Biomarkers, and TMRC.

The Translational Medicine Research Centre (TMRC) welcomes Brian Henry as the new Site Head. Brian moves into the position with almost 14 years of pharmaceutical research experience gained in the legacy companies, including Organon and Schering-Plough in the United Kingdom, Netherlands and, most recently, Singapore.

Brian received his first degree in molecular cell biology and PhD in molecular and behavioral neuroscience and has experience in leading all stages of drug discovery projects across multiple therapeutic areas. He has authored or co-authored over 40 peer-reviewed scientific publications and moves into the role following a three-year assignment as the Head of the Translational Imaging Section at TMRC.

A department of approximately 500 people, PPDM now has a global footprint with representation in all the major sites in the US, Oss (the Netherlands) and Singapore. lisa was joined by Hans Mueller, Finance Director, PPDM. Their visit was focused on getting to know TMRC’s personnel, current projects and strategic direction.

lisa and Hans also met key collaboration partners in Singapore, including the Economic Development Board. The visit was extremely positive for all involved and ended with lisa committing to visit TMRC at least once every quarter.

MSD Holds Successful Hepatitis Advisory Board Meeting

Clinical experts convene for medical updates ahead of VICTRELIS launch in Singapore

2011 has seen an extraordinary breakthrough in the treatment of Hepatitis C through the approval and launch of Boceprevir in the United States. Boceprevir, sold under the brand name VICTRElIS, is a first-in-class drug (protease inhibitor) that can boost and nearly double cure rates for patients infected with Hepatitis C Virus.

VICTRElIS is an important milestone in MSD’s continued efforts to establish itself as a global leader in the hepatitis arena. Moreover, Singapore has a pivotal role to play in the success of VICTRElIS as the drug is manufactured at the MMD Tuas plant. MSD Singapore can proudly say: “VICTRElIS is made in Singapore!”

To prepare for the launch of VICTRElIS in Singapore in 2012, MSD Singapore undertook a key strategic activity – the delivery of a successful local advisory board meeting. Taking place on 15 October 2011 at Sheraton Towers, the meeting was graced by nine local experts in hepatology and gastroenterology from Singapore’s major public and private hospitals as well as local and regional MSD staff.

sEP–DEc 2011

The objective of the meeting was to provide scientific updates on pivotal phase 3 clinical data on protease inhibitors and to gain local insights into the future clinical use of direct acting antiviral agents (DAAs) such as VICTRElIS. Annie Chin, Managing Director, Human Health Singapore, provided the opening address on the importance of and MSD’s commitment to the hepatitis portfolio. This was followed by a medical update by Dr Fernando Bognar, Regional Director, Medical Affairs for Hepatology.

The highlight of the event was the case presentation by renowned hepatologist Professor Robert Gish, from the University of California San Diego, who dialed into the meeting via teleconference at 2am (San Diego time). His presentation of three clinical scenarios of patients treated with VICTRElIS in the United States spurred a lively discussion among the audience on the current and future use of DAAs.

The feedback received was overwhelmingly positive. The doctors commented in unison that such an interactive meeting on a common platform would help facilitate feedback and enhance collaboration with MSD or among clinician leaders in the future. With this in mind, MSD now has the responsibility to convince as many doctors and patients as possible of the benefits of VICTRElIS by executing a world-class launch.

Asian aquaculture is a rapidly evolving industry. However, survival rates are poor due to diseases. Many veterinary authorities in this region now recognize the need for good-quality vaccines to support the sustainability and expansion of their aquaculture industry while enhancing food safety through less reliance on antimicrobials.

Having a direct hand in the growth of the industry is both exciting and challenging for Intervet Norbio Singapore. Over the last 11 years, the site has provided a combination of veterinary services as well as research and development in collaboration with large and emerging tilapia and marine fish farms both in Singapore and the region.

By working closely with the farmers, the epidemiology of major production diseases affecting aquaculture is now clearer. Armed with a bank of good-quality vaccines developed at Intervet Norbio Singapore, the site is in a good position to provide a holistic health management package, which includes diagnostic support, implementation of bio-security and large-scale vaccination programs to serve the industry better.

Merrymaking by the BeachMSD has a blast at Family Day 2011

Every good party has non-stop fun from start to finish, just like MSD’s Family Day, held on 3 December 2011. Close to 1,000 colleagues, family members and friends of MSD Singapore participated in the evening event, appropriately called “MSD Moonlight Beach Blast”, at Sentosa.

9

Tonight has been wonderful for my family. We loved the games the most as they welcomed participants of all ages.

Kesumawati Sattar, IPT Pharm South

Page 10: Merck 360 Degree Newsletter

The proceedings kicked off in the early evening with heart-thumping music from Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s percussion band. The adults first made a beeline for the masseurs, while the kids jumped to their hearts’ content in the Bouncy Castle. Of course, the tasty cold desserts and kacang puteh booths had their share of fans too.

This year’s theme of “Engagement and Collaboration” was echoed by Gaetan Angoh, Managing Director, MMD Singapore. He said: “I hope to see our MSD friends let their hair down tonight and take this opportunity to develop greater understanding of our various divisions, so we can all look forward to working together harmoniously.”

It was thus no coincidence that the games, such as the Amazing Race Flag Off and the sandcastle-building competition, required a big dose of teamwork and communication. The former had teams combing Palawan Beach to answer questions while the latter saw families sculpting creative structures with nothing but only mini plastic pails and spades.

The beach is an excellent choice for this nice and breezy weather. We’re also enjoying everything there is to see and eat.

Although it rained for about two hours, there was no stopping the team games on stage. Four teams went on stage to compete in three games. Everybody else had a great time supporting his favourite team, but the loudest cheers were reserved for the “lucky” men who had to dress up as exotic Hawaiian girls.

When it was time for dinner – a mix of delectable local and international fare – the musical duo of Sherman and Bryan wowed the audience with their acoustic renditions of radio hits.

The children also had fun with a hula hoop-spinning competition and tons of kid-friendly activities from hair-beading to cookie-painting.

Throughout the evening, game and lucky draw winners took home prizes such as Apple iPad 2s and food and shopping vouchers.

Needless to say, the wet weather couldn’t curb the vibrant atmosphere – all went home with smiles on their faces.

Outsourcing UpdateMore on Shared Business Services’ Business Process Outsourcing Project

If you had queries relating to purchase order processing, iExpense or master data management recently, you were likely served by an employee from Genpact, the outsourcing partner of Shared Business Services (SBS).

SBS is moving up the value chain and expanding the scope of its services across multiple functions. In order to create capacity while remaining lean and flexible, SBS has engaged Genpact’s services in three areas, namely Procure-to-Pay (PtP), EEM (Employee Expenses Management) and Master Data Management (MDM).

MSD employees can look forward to a new global integration initiative called the Compensation and Career Framework (CCF) in mid 2012.

The CCF is a structure for organizing jobs, career development and pay within the Company. It does not use legacy Merck grades or legacy Schering-Plough bands and has been designed to uniquely support MSD.

13

Genpact is a global leader in business process outsourcing (BPO). MSD’s leverage on Genpact’s capabilities and depth of experience will enable it to achieve operational excellence and meet its future growth in demand.

Since the pilot went live in November 2011, the processes in these three areas have remained the same. SBS aims to continue to provide all its clients with the same level of support and quality while enabling new business capabilities and positioning MSD for greater success.

MSD and Genpact teams celebrating the end of on-the-job training on 11 November 2011.

The compensation portion defines and differentiates jobs for all types of movement – lateral, promotions, downward, etc. It also assigns pay, which includes salary ranges, bonus targets and long-term incentive targets, to these jobs.

The career portion provides clear career development options, including criteria and competencies to be successful, and fosters opportunities within and across functions and divisions.

The CCF is aimed at helping employees attain the Company’s goals of transforming and performing at optimal levels within the industry. It will ensure a sustainable, market-aligned cost structure that positions MSD well to compete in the global marketplace in the long term.

People managers will receive training to prepare for the CCF’s implementation and employees will hear more about it in the coming months. So stay tuned!

On a Plant TourEmployees’ family members tour IPT Pharm South

Employees and their family members gathering at South Campus canteen.

Some 70 employees and their family members enjoyed an insider look at pharmaceutical manufacturing, warehousing and laboratory work on 1 December 2011.

The IPT Pharm South plant tour provided a great opportunity for employees’ families to see where their loved ones work. It was also one of the Human Resource Department’s family-friendly initiatives.

Gaetan Angoh, Managing Director, MMD Singapore, and Daniel Knapp, IPT Pharm South leader, presented an overview of the organizational structure and products made in Singapore.

Many of the participants were very excited, as it was the first time they visited the facilities. Being gowned up certainly added to the thrill.

While the adults and older children were touring the facilities, the younger children watched a movie in the conference room. The event ended with more fun, laughter and family bonding at a tea reception.

Living Inclusion as the HOW Raising awareness of and practicing Inclusion across the MMD sites

Inclusion Roadshows at MMD (above).

The Inclusion Roadshow hit the MMD site with great impact in September and October 2011. Attended by some 98% of employees, the roadshow raised their awareness of Inclusion and gave life to the 12 Inclusive Behaviors through videos featuring the enactment of daily examples of Inclusion. Most importantly, it helped spark new behaviors, which can now be seen across the sites. Colleagues have been showing their appreciation to colleagues for jobs well done. The Appreciation Boards were excellent platforms to link to ideas and give energy back. In fact, some boards were so overwhelmed that colleagues had to compete with one another for the limited space!

The Inclusion journey doesn’t just stop here. To keep the momentum going, POD meetings have already begun. Meeting norms with the behaviors and the launch of Inclusion as the HOW Wave II are some of the activities that have been lined up for the months ahead. So jump on the bandwagon and look out for more opportunities to embrace this change!

Building Talent in MSD Human Health colleagues switch roles

as part of their career development

MSD recognizes the importance of career development and provides structured processes, tools and a culture to meet the continuous learning needs of employees and help them achieve their full potential.

The Company offers both internal and external learning initiatives as well as on-the-job development opportunities such as stretch assignments, mentoring, and rotational and leadership programs.

Human Health’s Samuel Koh and Henry lee were previously Product Manager and Sales Manager for the ARCOxIA/FOSAMAx Franchise respectively. As part of their career development, they switched roles with each other in October 2011. Samuel is now Sales Manager and Henry, Product Manager. 3Sixtyº has a chat with them.

16

How did you end up switching roles?Henry: Samuel had been doing product management since September 2007 while I had been in sales management since January 2008. We’d talked about switching roles; Samuel wanted to move to sales management and I, to product management while continuing to drive the ARCOxIA/FOSAMAx business. We mooted the idea to Pang lai li, Cardiovascular/Musculoskeletal Business Unit Director, who agreed to let us swap roles.

How did MSD prepare you for your new role?Henry: The transition was extremely smooth, as both of us are still supporting the Franchise and we were switching portfolios with each other. Instead of the usual handover period of two to four weeks, Samuel and I took to our new roles quickly and could advice each other whenever queries arise.

lai li gave Samuel and me early exposure to sales management and product management respectively. I attended Merck Marketing in Principles/Merck Marketing in Action courses, Regional Product Team brand forums and product teleconferencing and was exposed to regional Product Managers, Regional Marketing leaders and brand strategies. I also had hands-on experience in building the Profit Planning/long Range Operating Plan.

Samuel: I’ve attended internal workshops on coaching. In 2012, I’ll be attending the Managing at Merck workshop as well as external ones on people management. All these will better equip me for my current role.

What has been the biggest challenge so far?Henry: There are new processes to be learnt as well as numerous projects, such as the Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs awareness campaign, to be rolled out in 2012. I do wish there is more time. But I’ve managed to overcome the challenges of time management by prioritizing tasks and projects and working with a super-efficient team.

Samuel: My challenge lies in people management. I moved from handling processes and marketing plans to managing thinking representatives with emotions. I have to be mindful of the implications of my words and actions.

at the first-ever GS Singapore Day

Happy Retirement, Patrick!A heartwarming farewell surprise from MSD Singapore

It isn’t every day that Global Services staff are able to get together to share ideas and experiences on service delivery.

The inaugural Global Services (GS) Singapore Day on 21 October 2011 gave some 200 staff the opportunity to do just that.

The participants first enjoyed a presentation by Mr Clarence Ti, who is the Chief Executive of Vital, a company that serves 80,000 clients in the Singapore public sector. His speech touched on the human aspects of service delivery and struck a chord with the audience, who felt encouraged to stay focused and engaged to deliver excellent service to their clients.

During lunch, the participants mingled with one another and visited the booths to learn more about the different GS functions.

The last but most fun part of the day was the three-hour iMazing Race. Fifteen teams of 14 each had a whale of a time scurrying around; not even heavy rain could dampen the mood. Fortunately, the skies soon cleared and everyone returned to celebrate the conclusion of GS Singapore Day.

19

Mr Clarence Ti, Chief Executive, Vital, shared about service delivery in his presentation.

The attendees picked up valuable lessons on service delivery.

The iMazing Race had everyone in smiles.
