One of the goals of the MCCC PTA Program is to prepare student/learners to practice as PTAs. In New

Jersey, as in many other states, PTAs are required to be licensed. Licensure may be granted following the successful completion of a standardized licensing exam, with a set passing score. In recognition of this standard, set by a board that is external to MCCC, the PTA Program has adopted 77 as the minimal passing grade. Other grade ranges are as follows:

A = 93-100 B = 83-86 C = 70- 76

A- = 90-92 B- = 80-82 D = 60- 69

B+ = 87-89 C+ = 77-79 F = 0-59

Grades below 77 are not considered passing grades for PTA Program courses, and are therefore considered unacceptable. All PTA Program courses must be completed with a grade of “C+” or higher. The Course Director determines the earned grade for the work and the course. All PTA program courses may be attempted only twice.

Please note: the following instructions have been written for Online learners however; the content that follows

applies to both the face to face and online formats for this course.

Weekly: Check the course home page early in the week to see what you should be working on and use the course syllabus as a guide. Since this is an online course, you will be able to review the course materials as often as you need to and will not be restricted by time as you would be in a traditional classroom. However; you should be mindful of the course schedule and stay on top of it! It’s easy to fall behind. For that reason, there are numerous activities along the way to help you learn the materials and check your progress without penalty. However; you do need to post your work to the weekly discussion board before the end of the day on Wednesdays! You also are required to respond to the posting of at least one of your classmates each week prior to the end of the day on Friday. Failure to do either of these will be reflected in the participation portion of your grade. (If you post and respond by the stated deadlines, you will have a grade of 100 for

that week. If you post but do not respond you will see a grade of 70 for that week.) Lessons will stay available but the discussion boards will only be available until Friday evening for that week.

Answer the questions that are asked on the discussion board for that week Review the postings of your classmates to see how they answered the questions Reply to at least one of your classmates with a “thoughtful” response

o A thoughtful response is something that would indicate that you actually read what he or she wrote and that it meant something or that you had something to add to what was written.

o Here are a couple of examples of what would NOT be considered thoughtful responses:

“I agree”, “cool”, “RU nutz?”, “YOLO”, “tks for the info BFF” All postings and responses must be written in complete sentences with properly formatted

grammar, spelling and syntax.

The only abbreviations that will be acceptable are appropriately utilized and recognized forms of medical terminology.

• Participation in online courses is expected to be based upon acceptable “netiquette” for a college level course. (Please click on this link (netiquette) to review those expectations if you are unfamiliar with them.)

Participation You are expected to actively participate in this class whether you are taking it as a traditional or online class this semester. Failure to do so will be reflected in the participation portion of your grade for this course.

Assignments: (You may submit any assignment earlier than the due date.)

1. Select a case study that has been published within the last 5 years in a peer reviewed journal.

(Physical Therapy, JOSPT, PAIN, etc…) 2. Submit a copy of the case study to B. Behrens for review PRIOR to writing your paper. A case report

deals with one patient versus a research study which deals with large numbers of patients. 3. Read the case study, noting how it is organized.

4. Address the following topics in your paper. a) What are the parts or components of a case study/case report? (These are indicated by headings in

the article that was published.) b) What type of information could one expect to find under each of the headings in a case study/case

report? Use the one that you have read as an example but DO NOT attempt to explain that article. You are using it as a “road map” for yourself but you are not to use specific information from that case in your paper other than the title, and publication information as a reference.

c) How are the headings or components organized? (Why were they in that sequence?) d) Were there any acknowledgments or references utilized for the writing of the study? (What would

the potential rationale be behind them if there were?) 5. Your ultimate goal at the completion of this assignment is that you should be able to end up with a

guide for yourself so that in the future, when you have to write your own case report, you will have a guide of the basics for how to do so. If what you have written fulfills that goal, then you have done a good job! If not, then go back and take another look at what you have written.

Student/learners will be responsible for preparing a class presentation that may be a joint project for no more than two (2) student/learners. The primary objective for this assignment is for you to learn about the specialty area of physical therapy practice and share that knowledge with your classmates. In order to facilitate this, you will:

1. Select one of the Sections of the American Physical Therapy Association which represents

a specialty area from the following list:

Aquatic Physical Therapy Pediatric Physical Therapy

Geriatric Physical Therapy Orthopedic & Sports Physical Therapy Oncology Physical Therapy Womens Health Physical Therapy Clinical Electrophysiology & Wound Care Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy Acute Care Physical Therapy Neurological Physical Therapy Research Section in Physical Therapy Education Section in Physical Therapy Hand Therapy Section

2. Research the area through both print and interview, and present the specialty area to your classmates

final submission due on or before week 6*

Page 7: Mercer County Community College Physical Therapist ...behrensb/documents/PTA101HdbkSp2015.pdf · Mercer County Community College Physical Therapist Assistant Program ... Written Assignment

7

Student/learners must sign up for the area or study in the Sign up Discussion Board or book as early as possible. Both the topic area and the partner for the project need to be indicated in advance of the presentation. Check to see that no other individual or group is planning on working on the same topic. There can be NO duplications.

Student/learners are required to discuss several items with the course director prior to the presentation. These include:

a. the questions that they wish to discuss with PTs and/or PTAs about, in advance of the interview

sample questions have been placed on the course website for you to review and add some of your own questions to after you have researched the area for yourself.

b. the plan for the presentation c. the actual topic area that you are presenting and why you selected it d. who if anyone you will be working with (group work is preferred) e. an overview of your plan for meeting the primary objective for the assignment (to teach your

classmates about the clinicians who work in that specialty area and how it differs from other types of physical therapy settings)

The interview is a vital component of the presentation. You are not permitted to interview someone with whom you work or a family member for this

assignment!

o Each member of the group must “meet” with the course director. o Each member of the group must meet each of the requirements for the assignment which

does include the interview.

Your presentation will take place in a “virtual” format which means that you will need to think about how you will be able to portray the information that you have learned so that your classmates will benefit from what you want to teach them. The use of PowerPoint presentations has been very effective in previous offerings of this class. (There are free shareware versions of this software available online if you do not already have a copy. Googledocs is one example that you may want to access.)

The use of written outlines with digital photographs has also been effective in the conveyance of the information.

You must include some form of visual image in your presentation so that you are not just submitting text.

1. Select a state other than New Jersey that you are interested in so that you can compare the practice of

physical therapy in that state to the practice of physical therapy in NJ.

2. Locate the address for the state board of physical therapy for that state (available from the APTA Website

Practice Act/Rules & Regulations Paper Due on or before week 9

or FSBPT Website)

3. Download a copy of the Practice Act and Rules & Regulations that govern the practice of physical therapy in that state from that State Board’s Web site.

4. Once you receive the information that you requested, obtain a copy of the New Jersey Practice Act/Rules & Regulations from http://www.fsbpt.org and look for New Jersey. You will be need to submit the link for the other state that you are comparing with NJ.

5. Answer each of the following questions and compare the two states by paraphrasing the information into your own words:

a. What is required for someone to be able to use the title physical therapist or physical therapist assistant?

b. What abbreviations are appropriate for a physical therapist or a physical therapist assistant? c. Are Physical Therapist Assistants licensed in each state? d. What is the definition for supervision in each state? (on-site or not?) e. Who may supervise whom? (Physical therapy aides, physical therapist assistants, etc.) f. Is there a specific ratio for supervision of PTAs by PTs? g. Is there anything specifically stated regarding wearing name tags that would identify professional

designations for licensed individuals? h. Are there guidelines for documentation or a requirement for a co-signature of

physical therapist assistant notes written in a patient record? i. Are there any guidelines regarding engaging in a sexual relationship with a patient

during or after the time when a patient is being seen as a patient for physical therapy?

j. Are there any requirements for continuing education to maintain licensure and if so what are they? Do they differ between PTs and PTAs or are they the same?

All paper assignments must be submitted double spaced in a 12 point font.

Reasonable Accommodations

On July 26, 1990, the President of the United States signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (P.L. 101-336). The ADA is intended to remove barriers against the more than 43 million people with disabilities in the United States. If you have a documented learning disability, psychological disability, physical disability, or other hidden disability that requires an accommodation, it is your responsibility to make an appointment to meet with the PTA program coordinator prior to the due date for any course examinations or assignments to discuss what accommodations might be necessary.

A list of Essential Functions for the PTA program learners and graduates is available to all students/learners by request, from any PTA program faculty member or through the PTA program’s website. Mercer County Community College is committed to supporting all students in their academic and co-curricular endeavors. Each semester, a significant number of students document disabilities, which may require learning, sight, earing, manual, speech, or mobility accommodations to ensure access to academic and co-curricular activities. The college provides services and reasonable accommodations to all students who need and have a legal entitlement to such accommodations.

For more information regarding this you can contact Arlene Stinson, Director of Academic Support Services, in LB 217 or by email [email protected].
