Egypt: Uprising adds to the printers’ woesPrivate and public sector incur millions as loss due to the deteriorating situation in the country

Magdi El Badawy, Vice President of the General Union of Printing and Media in a recent statement said that printing presses in the region incurred a heavy loss that amounted to millions of Egyptian pounds. Talking to Youm7 newspaper he said that, the majority of printing

press workers in the private sector are working on temporary basis that affects their regular income. Government presses are also badly affected as newspapers are printed on a low-budget and the national newspapers going almost zero in advertising has led to a reduction in the number of pages and copies. Satellite channels also contribute to this loss with more and more people watching the television for direct coverage rather than waiting an-other day to read the news from the papers. He said that majority of the printing institutions and even the national institutions are deprived of any incentives due to this scenario.Recently the Egyptian Chamber of Printing Industries asked com-mercial agents and importers to maintain price stability and not exploit the circumstances in the country by hiking prices.

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics in Egypt announced that the total losses reported in the sectors of manufacturing, construction and tourism account to more than 10 billion pounds, while Mamdouh Al-Wali commented in Al-Ahram newspaper that the losses are much higher than estimated and range between 55 and 100 billion pounds.Egypt has gone through a lot of economic setbacks in the pro-duction of goods and services. Disruption of internet and tele-communication services, suspen-sion of trading stock, paralyzed transport and tourism as well as open robbery took Egypt by storm after the outbreak of the revolution. A massive protest rally recently overthrew the President of Egypt, Muhammad Hosni Mubarak, while the army took the reins of the country.

Printing industry in the region is on fire. Everybody is gearing up for the Gulf Pack and Print 2011 show. In this issue, we bring to our readers the sec-ond part of our extensive pre show report, covering the technologies to be displayed by major players as well as by small companies during the GPP. Some very exciting equipments and solutions will also be on display in the show. However our major highlight in this issue is an exclusive interview with Bernhard Schreier, CEO and Chairman of Heidelberg. The exclusive interview was conducted during a recent visit to Heidelberg in Germany. This interview is followed by another interview with the Chief Operating Officer and president of Eastman Kodak Company, Philip Faraci, who visited Dubai for the first time. These two top executives and decision makers from the world of offset and digital offer some valuable insights about the future of graphic arts and the technologies that both companies offer to printers. Heidelberg’s recent announcement on their global strategic cooperation with Ricoh is a clear sign of where the printing industry is heading to. On the other hand the efforts that digital equipment manufacturers such as Kodak are making to find a strong foothold in the commercial printing sector also proves that both digital and offset sectors are desperately in need of each other. The offset vs. digital narrative has evolved into offset next to digital concept. In the future both technologies will be indispens-able for commercial printers. On the other hand full integration in print houses will be a necessity rather than be documented as a future project. Through theses interviews we try to get a better grasp of what the future has in store for printers. And it seems that in order to capture the future, printers have to come out of their comfort zone and embrace the digital technology.

The Ministry of Interior plans to develop and establish modern buildings for its department to keep pace with the growth of the state. The current initiative is an extension of the adminis-trative decision of the Ministry of Interior to sign a construction contract for the security print-ing press building that will be

located on Salwa road near the current police press. The agreement was signed between Brigadier Engineer Abdul Aziz Abdullah Al Ansari, Director of Logistics depart-ment in the Ministry of Interior and Engineer Amr Mahmood of Nawras Engineering Company. The agreement was signed in the presence of Col. Saud Rashid Al Shafi, Head of procurement division at Logistics Department and Col. Hisham al-Qusaibi, Head of Engineering division at the department and Capt. Mohammad Al-Qahatani.

Al Sharq newspaper of Qatar re-ports that the project estimate amounts to 59 million riyals and will be completed in a time frame of 12 months starting from the date of signing the contract, while the whole process will be overseen by the Engineering division of the department. The security printing press building will have two floors that will include workshops for printing, manufacturing and production in addition to a number of administrative of-fices, auditorium, training hall and other facilities.

Egypt: first heidelberg lfp installed in Mosbah The press aims to double production with the new Speedmaster XL 162

The first large-format press in the Middle East from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) will be installed at the Mosbah Packaging Press in Cairo that was established back in 1964 by its founder Abdel Moneim Mosbah. The five-colour press with coat-ing unit will be put in the new 6,000 m2 production building of the press. “We are impressed by the high quality and above all the outstanding productivity of this press,” said Khaled Mosbah, who is charge of the family busi-ness since 1998. The company produces high-quality folding cartons for Egypt’s food and con-fectionery industry. The press-room is also equipped with two

new Speedmaster CD 102 and a Speedmaster SM 74 and a GTO 52. Around 20,000 metric tons of cardboard are printed each year in a three-shift operation. “We are obtaining everything for the new press, installation, service and training from a single source,” continued Mosbah. Hei-delberg has been working closely with distributor Youssef Allam & Co. for years in the region. “In taking this new press into service, we are aiming for strong growth and looking to print up to 40,000 metric tons of cardboard each year,” says a confident Mosbah. Launched during Drupa 2008, the large format presses are a thing of interest to industrial-scale commercial and packaging print shops. Speedmaster XL 145 and XL 162 presses are based on the tech-nological platform of the XL 105 and delivers impressive benefits

such as faster makeready times, less paper waste, consistent high print quality, good flexibility with a range of substrates and high avail-ability. The minimizing of make ready times unique to this class is achieved through simultaneous washing of the blanket and impres-sion cylinder and fully automated plate changes in just a few minutes. Adel Allam, CEO of Youssef Allam & Co. commented, “We’re very proud to have this machine for the first time in Egypt. We had a long history of mutual confidence with Mosbah Press, always helping them to strengthen their market-ing competitiveness, production, quality and efficiency.” Last but not the least, the Prinect print shop workflow enables this format class to be fully integrated in an end-to-end solution. Machines in this series are also available as perfect-ing presses.

Jordan: Joint Meeting Between the irbid chamber of industry and printing community The meeting aims to discuss the problems and challenges facing these sectorsIrbid Chamber of Industry orga-nized a meeting with printing and packaging professionals and representatives. They have been studying the problems and chal-lenges faced by the industry and the ways for solving them. According to Al Dostour newspa-per, the President of Irbid Cham-ber of Industry Raed Samara said that this is the first of a series of meetings that will be held on fre-quent basis from now on in Irbid. The aim of these meetings is to study and discuss the issues and problems that graphic arts indus-try is facing. Since printing is a major contributor to the national economy, The Chamber will focus all its efforts to help printing community face the existing and future challenges. For his part, the representative of the printing and packaging in the

Jordan Chamber of Industry, Ad-nan Abu Ragheb said the volume of exports for the sector of pack-aging, paper and board amounted to 405 million dinars in 2010. 726 companies and establishments with more than 12,000 employees are involved in this industry. The chamber with the contribution of the government plans to establish a packaging academy in order to promote education in packaging and printing sector. “Despite the hurdles the paper and packaging industry has grown by a whopping 14% and exportvolume reached to 405 million dinars,” commented Abu Ragheb. Unscrupulous printers are also add-ing to the industry’s woes. These licensed printers who lack proper infrastructure and equipment to print different jobs outsource the

orders they receive to evade taxes, while getting paid for the job with-out reflecting the revenues in their books. These so called printers do not compensate their employees and workers as well. Other issues include the shortage of skilled labour and lack of sufficient funding to develop the industry.

Egypt: Ministry of defense installs presstek 34di-Uv digital offsetNew Presstek Distributor Adler Gruppe Signs First Agreement Presstek Inc. in a recent deal delivered a Presstek 34DI-UV four colour digital offset press and a Presstek 9920 single colour offset press to the Egyptian Ministry of Defense. The presses would be installed in the new Cairo facility. Adler Gruppe, Presstek’s recently appointed Egypt based distribu-tor would see on to the service of the machines. Presstek 34DI-UV was selected by the Ministry to cater to its security printing needs within the Egyp-tian military. The machine delivers precise registration and has the ability to print fine details. Dura-bility and instant drying of UV inks are an added advantage for these mission-crucial applications. The machine has a maximum sheet size of 340mm X 460mm (13.39” x 17.72”) and supports 3001pi and FM screening. Presstek 9920 offset press was pur-chased for the production of gen-eral printing and for overprinting spot colours or mettalics required on work produced using the 34DI-UV. Impressed by the performance of the newly acquired presses, the Ministry of Defense has decided to create similar facilities in other locations this year.

Mohamed Shoukry, CEO of Adler Gruppe commented, “This is a highly prestigious installa-tion and we are delighted that Presstek’s solutions matched the specific requirements of the Ministry of Defense. The installa-tion was smooth and the presses are delivering beyond customer expectations. This is a testament to the quality and performance of Presstek systems.”Jack Dean, Presstek Area Sales Manager added, “This success is due to the hard work Adler Gruppe has put into represent-

ing Presstek in Egypt. The company has trained its sale and technical staff and created a showroom in Cairo to provide current and potential customers with an ideal location to fully test the potential of Presstek products including DI presses and the Presstek Dimension Pro 800 chemistry free platemaker that will be installed in the near future. We believe this is the first of many installations that we will see in the Egyptian market as a result of our partnership with Adler Gruppe.”

sharjah: Maisloon takes delivery of heidelberg suprasetter

Improving their work efficiency, Maisloon Printing Press in Sharjah acquired a Heidelberg Supraset-ter A75 CtP thermal with Glunz & Jensen Raptor 68 Offline plate

processor. The machine uses Prinect MetaDimension RIP and Prinect SignaStation Imposition Software. Maisloon currently hosts a range of Heidelberg machines

including a GTO 52-1, a GTO 52, a GTO 52-2, a PM 74-2, a SM 52-4, a GTOZ-52(2c) and a Platen in their press. The press also works on a Polar Mohr 115 and a MultiCut SPR 115H. The company is practically a Heidelberg house. One of the main features of the small- and medium-format Suprasetter is how compact it is. According to Heidelberg, whilst the basic manual feed CtP has a very small footprint, a Suprasetter A75 with auto plate loading system is by far the smallest platesetter in its class. The small footprint allows easy integration in most print shops.

Khaled Abdel Aziz Morsi, will temporally fill his position until officials re-lease the results of investigation. Fadly, who is in custody now has been charged with misuse of public funds. Ahmed Atef, a board member and ex chairman of the chamber in an exclusive interview told ME Printer that although members agreed to suspend Fadly; in case of acquittal he can be reinstated. However if he is convicted, the

chamber will consider legal action against him and a new chairman will be elected. Until then Khaled Abdel Aziz Morsi will fill Fadly’s duties as acting chairman. Atif also said that the chamber decided to postpone Techno-print show until November due to country’s unstable situation. The event, which is considered the most important graphic arts exhibition in Egypt cannot be held during unrest. The event aims at creating fresh opportuni-ties for international companies to invest in the Egyptian printing market and establish working relationships with printing com-panies of Egypt as well as provid-

ing a platform for suppliers and manufacturers to display their latest printing and packaging machinery.

heidelberg and ricoh announce Global strategic cooperationBased on the agreement Heidelberg will sell Ricoh’s latest color digital press

Ricoh Company and Heidelberg announced a global strategic cooperation. Based on the agreement, as a first step, Heidelberg will sell Ricoh’s latest color digital press, the Ricoh ProTM C901 Graphic Arts

Edition - Ricoh`s high speed color digital press with Ricoh PxPTM Chemical toner, as well as appropriate future produc-tion printing offerings in Ricoh’s pipeline. The global strategic cooperation, which includes Ricoh services and support, will start in April 2011. The first markets will be UK and Germany with a phased rollout to follow in other geographies with the-completion targeted for Drupa 2012.The Ricoh and Heidelberg partnership will support them in growing their core offset business and enable them to offer more flexibility towards their clients using Ricoh’s latest digital print technology.

Shiro Kondo, President and CEO, Ricoh Company, Ltd. says, “In today’s climate it is important that commercial printers have the right tools to be versatile and meet both long and short run requests.”“With this new partnership we will also address customer demands in the broad spectrum of hybrid print applications, i.e. the combination of offset and digital printing within a single print product,” says Bernhard Schreier, CEO of Heidelberg. As a world premiere Heidelberg will display the new strategic partnership with Ricoh at the digi:media tradeshow from the 7th to 9th of April 2011 in Düs-seldorf, Germany.

You have paid off your govern-ment loan ahead of the initially anticipated 2012 deadline. Does this mean that you are back on track and the crisis is over for Heidelberg? It is true that we have paid off the loan from KfW (Reconstruction Loan Corporation) but we still have support from the State. In summer 2009 Heidelberg established a comprehensive financing pack-age to stabilize the company’s financing structure, addressing a convertible bond coming due as well as re-organizing bilateral facilities. Heidelberg concluded a financing package with strong sup-port received under the German economic stimulus package for the period up to the middle of 2012. The three facilities signed in 2009 for the amount of EUR 1.4 billion have in the meantime been sub-stantially reduced through the net proceeds from the capital increase of EUR 400 million as well as via voluntary prepayments due to a strong Free Cash Flow to approx. EUR 900 million in aggregate as at 31 December 2010. The KfW spe-

cial programme facility was fully repaid. This reduction in financial debt has substantially lowered the interest burden for us. Half of this remaining 900 million credit lines as of today are still guaranteed by the State, maturing by the mid of 2012. Moreover, the capital increase has given Heidelberg a stable capital structure. On the business side, Heidelberg’s goal is to break even operatively. That means EBIT (Earnings before Interest and Tax) should be at least zero by the end of this fiscal year. Our order intake is now up by 25 per cent and sales have gone up to around 18 per cent. All these signs show that the industry is picking up and we are set to reach our goal. Though, I have said so, it’s not a general condition everywhere else in the industry. North America is still falling back; there is not much interest in investing heavily in that re-gion, while in other regions especially China, Latin America and Brazil there are much activities for investments. Today, I have mixed feelings regard-ing the Middle East though, especially with regards to the current political situation.

You have an ongoing restruc-turing plan. Based on this new plan, Heidelberg has now only three divisions; Heidelberg Equipment, Heidelberg Ser-vices, and Heidelberg Financial Services. In which way has the restructuring process helped you to overcome the recession? The restructuring as such is fin-ished. As you are aware, we used to be a 3.8 billion Euro turnover company before the financial crisis

recuperating after a big fall, Heidelberg Chairman Bernhard Schreier in an exclusive interview with

started. The recession dropped us to almost 2.3 billion Euro turnover and a drop like this could hardly be compensated by internal restruc-turing alone. But we worked hard to reduce our breakeven point from over 3 billion to less than 2.5 billion, which means that we had to take out fixed costs of almost 600 million in total. Doing this, we unfortunately had to reduce our headcount as well and had to streamline our internal processes. With the new divisional structure we are able to serve our customers efficiently and have laid the path for future growth.Based on a study by Print Indus-tries Market Information and Research Organization (PRIMIR), by 2015 there will be a 0.3% drop in the page volume of analogue printing and a growth of digital printing by 15.9%. Meanwhile by 2015, Heidelberg is project-ing a growth of approximately 1% a year based on the lim-

ited decrease of sheetfed offset print revenues in 2009 and the positive print market outlook in developing countries. If these projections are correct then the growth of analogue printing is quite disappointing, what gives you incentive to still invest in conventional offset printing and bringing new presses to the market? It is difficult to describe the whole development in the graphic arts industry with just one single figure. Let’s open the scope a little bit wider: Yes - the printing industry in emerging countries is facing healthy growth rates, while the industry in industrialized countries is changing. At the same time the packaging print market is becoming more stable with higher growth rate projections compared to the commercial print market. However it’s a changing world and we have to adapt to the changes. This is why it is important for Hei-delberg to broaden our footprint in the packaging market as well as to offer the right solution for our clients from all over the world. Does this mean we should stop investing in offset technology? Not at all. Look for example at our latest Speedmaster machine that we introduced at IPEX: The CX 102. We designed this machine to combine the best of the XL and CD product range in order to meet the changed requirements in the industry. Meanwhile, almost one year after the introduction, it is proven that this was the right way to go: In emerging countries this machine is accepted as the perfect way for industrialized printers to set themselves apart from their competition. In the industrialized countries the CX is for example an ideal step for commercial printers entering the packaging market. Our claim is to offer versatile solu-tions to our customers and this is why we are doing the same things on the digital route as well, offer-ing solutions that are versatile, to meet the printers and print buyers’ needs.

During Ipex, you announced that by the end of 2010 Heidel-berg is planning to get back into the commercial digital printing market and that you will an-nounce your digital partner. Stephan Plenz has announced

that the company is preparing a solution consisting of a digital press, Anicolor sheetfed litho press and a software control-ler for parceling jobs between the two, why do you think this system will be your winning for-mula for capitalizing on digital printing market? For us going back into digital means to offer our clients important ad-ditional flexibility. Combining the Anicolor Technology with Digital Printing enables commercial print-ers always to choose the technol-ogy that fits best to the actual situation in reference to produc-tion cost, print quality and delivery time. Not having this flexibility, printers easily run into trouble to produce something on a printing device that is only a second choice. This is of course critical in today’s competitive business environment. This is why we strongly believe that our combined digital and offset solution will bring a real benefit to the market and why we have just recently announced a global stra-tegic cooperation with Ricoh. As a first step, both companies agreed to enter into a global distribution contract for Ricoh’s Production Printing Product portfolio. This agreement enables us to sell Ricoh’s latest color digital press, the Ricoh Pro C901 Graphic Arts Edition - Ricoh`s high speed color digital press with Ricoh PxP Chemical toner, as well as appro-priate future production printing offerings in Ricoh’s pipeline. The global strategic cooperation, which includes Ricoh services and support, will start in April 2011. The first markets will be UK and Germany with a phased rollout to follow in other geographies with completion targeted for Drupa 2012. Our future plans are to include integration with Heidelberg’s industry standard workflow solution in the graphic arts industry, Prinect, as well as joint development activities for future printing applications. With Ricoh we have found an ideal strategic partner who shares our values of customer focus, environ-mental sustainability, innovation, quality, and customer service. By rounding off our offset portfolio in-cluding Anicolor technology with new digital printing equipment, we are providing our clients the combination of best-in-class offset

and digital printing-technology. Utilizing both, our customers are able to offer variable data printing as well as shorter runs, next to their established cost-effective and high end quality offset printing. With this new partnership we will also address customer demands in the broad spectrum of hybrid print applications, i.e. the combination of offset and digital printing within a single print product.

Do you believe that with the new digital solution you are offering, you’ll be able to pose a serious competition to companies such as HP, Xerox and others or that’s not the intention? Before we re-entered the digital market and decided to partner with Ricoh, we carefully analysed the production spread of commer-cial printers. It is most important not to focus on single jobs but to offer the best equipment for the entire production spread of commercial printers. This is why we strongly believe that the com-bination of offset and digital that we will offer together with Ricoh is the way into the future – offering values and flexibility to printers and their clients as well.

Heidelberg has introduced many innovative and state-of-the-art technologies, since its inception until now; however for printers in the Middle East, GTO is still the soul of Heidelberg, an Icon. Some even wrote poems about it. For many printers here, it is more than a printing press; it is a living history of the printing industry. Many people wonder what will happen to this popular press. When will Heidelberg pull the plug on the production of this press? Not only in the Middle East but also in other regions like Asia or South America the GTO 52 is still a desired product with an excellent reputation as a reliable work horse and that has a good resale value. We therefore have no reason to pull the plug. We modified it and renewed certain elements of it and it is still a very good machine on a basic level of automation with manual settings that fits small printers especially in emerging countries perfectly. The GTO today is much more sophisticated and much more automated. I don’t

have a reason to pull the plug because it is still contributing positively to our business. It estab-lished and nourished generations of printers and all the spare parts are still available today and are requested frequently.

You recently acknowledged the need for consolidation of printing industry. Do you think there are too many press manufacturers around? Do you think Heidelberg eventually will merge with another press manufacturer? There is too much capacity today in the manufacturers’ world. You have to take out the excess capacity in order to add more value to the mar-ket. The question is can so many players put enough money into their research and development to compete against other on one hand and other media on the other hand. If everybody just invests small budgets to develop the same equipment in parallel there will be no big difference at all. This is my in-terpretation of consolidation; why not combine the individual efforts of the manufacturers to offer better technology and more productivity to the markets. Consolidating funds for certain tasks help to do more and add more value to the industry in the end.

What you think, Drupa 2012 holds for the onlookers? Drupa 2012 will show that there is an ongoing demand for com-mercial and packaging print and there are business opportunities in our industry to earn money. The combination of offset and digital printing for example leads to more flexibility for the printer as well as for the print buyer. We will also see further integration of printed and electronic media. It is important to understand that both media supplement each other and will pay into the marketing mix. The role of environmental responsibility will be crucial. This is where Heidelberg will continue to underline its role as a champion of environmental protection in the Printing Industry. People will get orientation at Drupa on what and how to invest as well as ideas for new business opportunities.Drupa 2012 will show many solu-tions, which will help printers to cope with future requirements. It

will be more on shorter runs, faster make ready times, environmental issues, how to reduce paper waste and how to get faster into produc-tion. These are the topics that will be covered because, due to market pressure printers want to produce quality printed products much cheaper than what is possible to-day. They need reliable machines to successfully meet those require-ments.

Do you think the center of grav-ity of printing is shifting from the Western world to Asia? Yes, there is a shift but it is not a drastic shift. There is more printing going on in Asia today. Over 30 per cent of our production is going to Asia. Only 15 per cent is going in to North America. Still the biggest power is Central Europe in the printing arena. Having said that I have to admit there will be more print in the Asian hemisphere in the future and we are by far the market leader there for high qual-ity products. All this means that printing com-panies in the Western part have to differentiate themselves. This de-velopment is already in progress and a lot of printers successfully set themselves apart from others by implementing lean productions processes for example.Based on this market development we have adapted our company structure and strategy by intro-ducing the Service division. Here we support our clients in exactly those regards.

Will Print China overtake Drupa?I don’t think so, because the major part of printing still happens in industrialized countries and also the biggest numbers of printers are also still in the industrialized countries. But Print China is an important event to support the future growth in this country. We will have a big presence there and will showcase the latest technology for our customers. As a highlight we will launch our Speedmaster CX 102 for the Chinese market.

Based on a new agreement, Hei-delberg USA will distribute EFI’s VUTEk GS series of equipment as well as inks, parts and con-sumables. Heidelberg will also provide customer and technical support for printers including

BERNHARD SCHREIER AT A GLANCEBernhard Schreier is a Heidel-berg man in all aspects. Born in the city of Heidelberg in Germany in the year 1954, he completed his mechanical en-gineering from the Mannheim Vocational Institute along with hands on training from the Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG coupled with a degree of Berufsakademie. Schreier started his career as an Assistant to the Assembly Management at the Wiesloch factory of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG. Boarding the flight of suc-cess, he thenceforth had a very rewarding career journey. In the year 1990, he was appointed as the Head of production at Montataire, France. On Novem-ber 1996, he was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer handling Linotype-Hell AG. After the merger of Linotype-Hell AG into Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, he be-came a full time member at the management board of the Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG and Manager of the Prepress business unit. Having worked as the CEO of Heidelberg Digital, Rochester, USA he was then appointed as the Chairman of the Management Board in the year 1999, the position that he holds till date.

installations and training. My question is will we see similar agreements in other parts of the world including Middle East? A rather odd alliance, does it mean that in future Heidelberg will transform to a company that offers a whole range of digital equipment based on OEM agreements? In order to deliver a value to our customers, the products that we distribute must always be comple-mentary to our own offering. The distribution of the large format printer in the US is a good example as well as our recent an-nouncement with Ricoh.Heidelberg deals in 170 countries and over 5000 people look after our sales and service activities. Whatever they can sell and whatever fits through the product portfolio is highly welcome. Our

back up instructors, our service instructors and above all, our in-frastructure can perfectly handle those projects. In fact we might even see more of this in the future.

As the CEO of the biggest press manufacturer in the world, definitely you had to take many tough decisions, decisions that without doubt had impact on the global graphic arts indus-try. How do you rate yourself? In your opinion, what was your biggest achievement? And if you could turn back time what would have you done differ-ently? Our aim was and is to strengthen our customers and our industry. Heidelberg was the manufacturer, who segmented the production process into “Prepress”, “Press” and “Postpress”. Consequently

we integrated these formerly isolated areas into one common workflow called Prinect. Being a solution provider, we integrated the equipment of the whole value chain into the printshop man-agement as well. Following this philosophy, Heidelberg was the first and still is the only supplier offering an integrated packaging workflow. If I could turn back time, my feel-ing is that we went into digital too early. But you make decisions based on the information you have at a certain point of time. . Afterwards, as the saying goes you grow wiser with the years passed. And as the years passed the printing world has changed and will continue to change. For the future we see the potential of the combination of digital and offset printing.

Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) with its sheetfed offset printing machines is one of the leading solution providers for the print media industry. The core business of this tech-nology group covers the whole value-added and process chain for the 35 x 50 cm (13.78 x 19.69 in) to 121 x 162 cm (47.64 x 63.78 in) format classes in the sheetfed offset sector. Heidelberg develops and produces precision printing presses, platesetters, postpress equip-ment, and software for integrating all the printshop processes. The Heidelberg portfolio also provides general and consulting services ranging from spare parts and consumables to the sale of remarketed equipment, and training

at the Print Media Academy. Based in Heidelberg, Germany, with develop-ment and production sites in seven countries and around 250 sales offices across the globe, the company supports around 200,000 custom-ers worldwide. All Heidelberg presses destined for the world market are manufactured at the Wiesloch-Walldorf site. Standardized presses in all standard format classes and folding ma-chines for the Chinese market are produced by Heidelberg in Qingpu near Shanghai. In financial year 2009/2010, Heidelberg recorded a sale of EUR 2.306 billion. As at March 31, 2010, the Heidelberg Group had a workforce of 16,496 worldwide, including 700 trainees.

Kodak

Kodak’s recently published an-nual report was disappointing in terms of figures, why is that so?The profits were quite good relative to this years plan but we couldn’t achieve the revenue figures that had been targeted. The company’s growth initiatives are actually do-ing well, though the scale of busi-ness was a little bit influenced by the economic dropout. In 2008 we had 6 quarters in a row and witnessed a very solid growth in digital business. The traditional business has been dropping at a 20 plus per cent for a while now and the digital side was offsetting it. Though the traditional decline will continue, Kodak has actually offset the decline. Even developed countries like the US and the West-ern Europe are not bouncing back into the industry after the great

recession but emerging markets in countries like the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Latin America etc. grew 15 per cent last year.

What is the growth rate in the Middle East area? The growth rate in Middle East is in single digits. We don’t track it on a regular basis, but still can say that it has a reasonable growth rate.

Tell us about the major potential areas in Kodak and what are the future trends? The digital capturing business is quite tough. Consumer electronics especially the business of Digital Still Camera’s peaked about 2 years ago in revenue size though last year it shrank pretty significantly, which we didn’t expect. PVC (pocket video camera) market has also grown dramatically.

The pre press business didn’t per-form well as we expected. Though we were expecting an 8 per cent growth in the industry, it grew only 4 per cent last year. The results did not kick back into the 2008 levels in terms of size. The move-ment for new products was quite stagnant last year. We brought in a lot of new technology that of-fered significant productivity and other performance advantages thereby offsetting price pressure that you see while commoditizing traditional plates. Our new plates are significant in terms of the advancements they make; they require less energy, develop on press, eliminate processing and are ecologically friendly. Pre press business is quite solid though they don’t have a lot of growth. We have 4 growth initiatives, commercial inkjet printing, consumer inkjet printing, packaging and workflow and services. These segments are doing quite well and grew 20 per cent last year, while this year we expect the business to grow by 40 per cent. There is significant growth oppor-tunity this year with the commercial inkjet now available in the market. Our new Stream technology put into Prosper press is very well received and it is the only press in the market that offers offset class performance. We print on a web configuration that can print up to 1000 ft per minute and we print 650 ft per minute in a 4 colour press. The press offers magazine qual-ity output comparable with 175 line quality output in a digital press. We print on a broad range of media, from 30 pound to 200 pound stock and coated and uncoated media. Though the packaging segment is comparatively small the business has doubled this year. As more and more people demand gravure quality and flexible substrate, we are expecting a significant growth in the future. Kodak also introduced the wide version and the direct engraving flexible plates last year. We see a huge amount of growth in the packaging business and the services and solutions business was equal to 21 per cent growth in the second half of the year and we ex-pect it to be growing over the next few years. Overall, I can say that the growth initiatives are working really well. The pre press business is relatively stable, though the digital

capture business is tough; we are getting reasonable growth in the retail photo finishing market and a very good result in consumer inkjet.

Recently your CEO said that Kodak’s planning to shoulder the inkjet business with partners to develop the business, so that they can take the risk with you. It seems that developing inkjet so-lutions costing you lot of money. Is it worth it? On the commercial side, the Kodak has an integrated set of complete solutions and that means we can put together a press but we need to tie in all of the conversion and post processing equipment. So there is a lot of work to do. This is also the opportunity to move the technology into various press configurations. We work with most of the major press manufacturers and we provide a print head based solution that can actually melt on to existing presses, that’s an area where we have great opportunity.

Nexpress was a project started with Heidelberg, and then they plugged it off and gave it back to you. You always wanted to have a foothold in commercial printing, now how do you plan to penetrate the offset printing segment? We had an extensive relationship with Heidelberg; they had been our distributors in many locations. The

Nexpress project was apparently started with their support and we still have a good relationship with them. We have been in EP (electro-photographic) printing and printer development space for many years. We made our first production color press with Nexpress; it’s a great product that continues to evolve even today. It’s got high quality, high performance and has a lot of functions that you can only other-wise get in an offset press.

Do you see prospect in the Middle East for your high end inkjet solutions such as Stream technology? Yes we do. Our first high end inkjet press would be going in the Middle East probably by next year. It has an offset type speed in a digital print work flow. These are commonly used in areas where you have got transaction printing or areas where you need full digital print capabili-ties. It’s used in many areas as well, in books, even used in newspaper printing in some locations.

You have a lot of resellers in this arena, isn’t it pretty confusing?Normally we have distribution partners who cover the entire region or just the sub regions. They cover a specific set of seg-ments and sometimes we can’t get that and end up expanding that portfolio. In general we tie in a line with distribution partners who sell other products; they give us some

scale of advantage that is focused on our products. Basically we look for separate partners for packaging and commercial print. At the same time we prefer those who have a wider customer base.

With regard to your product portfolio, which do you think is most suited for the Middle East? Our traditional business here has been to deal with plates. That’s our most popular zone in this region. Digital and workflow solutions are gaining more interest in the area because most of the commercial printers have the pressure to be-come more relevant in a forward looking business environment that requires something digital and the need to move on to workflow solu-tions.

The Middle East market is a developing market however it is quite unpredictable; how much are you willing to invest in this region?I think we have lot of potential in this market. It’s a great trading area with a large untapped workforce. If there is more political stability in the region then it’s going to be a driver of growth. I have great hopes for Middle East, which will become an important place of business in the coming years. On the other side, Africa is also an untapped frontier for us with tremendous natural re-sources and a vast employee base.

Why you reacted so slow to the shift from analogue to digital? There were lot of reasons for the

gradual shift. Kodak is the most recognized brand in the world and we have been here for years ubiq-uitously associated with photogra-phy. The transition from traditional film based photography to digital photography occurred in a very significant manner. Though we were the first brand to invent the digital cameras back in 1975, Kodak never commercialized them in the initial periods. Kodak had invented digital imaging, digital technology and many other technologies that are widely used today. Kodak has never been a strong camera player but we are a strong film player that uses camera enabling technology. The move from film based imaging was a significant transition to the company but the brand is still very healthy and very well known.

Kodak has been licensing its intellectual property as a short term strategy, while trying to shift its focus. But even in the short term this strategy looks like a double edged sword? I won’t call it a double edged sword. If I could row back time 20 years back, I would constrain the number of peo-ple who went into the digital market. Once people are into that market for years, you can’t restrict them. One thing you can make sure is that you are being effectively compensated. So we actively decided to license our IP. As I said, we have invented many aspects associated with digital cameras and then we have found that the licensing program is actually investing into the business and areas that will give us a long time future.

Your product portfolio is very broad; will you divest your prod-uct portfolio?Yes, we have already divested. We have divested areas that are not linked with the commercial print space. We have actually aggregated in the consumer digital space. So consumer digital and commercial prints are two primary focus areas. And we are trying to maintain a focus on expansion, while making sure that we have solid businesses in those areas. Many of our competitors in consumer space like Sony, Sam-sung or HP etc have much broader portfolio than we do. And in the commercial print space we have the broadest portfolio that’s relevant to a commercial printer today.

When do you expect to be profit-able again? We were profitable last year, because we had a very significant IP licensing set of programs last year. This year we expect more of a normalized licensing program and will be slightly below profitability again. Next year, even without changing in terms of normalized licensing, we will be prof-itable because our core investments have been improving dramatically for the last 2 years and now our core investments are moving in from the heavy investment phase to the cash generation phase, where it has started to become more profitable for the company. Consumer inkjet moved into the profitable side for the company this year and will have a positive overall earning by next year. It will go into break even sometime in 2013 probably.

Within the next decade, how would Kodak look like?Kodak has been growing over the past 4 or 5 years. Our growth rates were 20 per cent last year; we expect a 40 per cent growth next year and a compounded growth rate of 30 per cent or 40 per cent over the next 4 or 5 years. I don’t think our growth areas are going to slow down over the next couple of years but I think it will only go up. Packaging is now a significant part of our commercial printing. Digital printing will be an important segment of printing presses, tradi-tional or offset printing. So you can see that our workflow and services to business will continue to grow and we will become a much more significant player in the industry.

Cutting the mustard in the Middle East, Gulf Print & Pack 2011 is a blast from the past for printers, convert-ers and packers in the region. Visitors can spot brand spanking new and exciting technologies in commercial and package printing at the bi-annual event. Printing and packaging is a com-plex sector that takes in use a wide range of equipments and materials like plastics, laminates, metallic foils, materials from paper to board etc. Printing process involves everything from flexo and offset to gravure or hot and cold foiling and also digital printing that demands quality, better performance and that meets environment standards. Technology is on a constant move now with style statements and brand images going under an im-age makeover, so package printers are always on the lookout for the latest in substrates, presses, inks, converting lines or even the latest legislation or testing requirements. Gulf Print & Pack is the best place to unearth the latest in the industry. Latest requirements needed in special finishing, coating, cutting, forming, erecting, filling and seal-ing operations to produce a pack-age can be found at the show. The Gulf Print & Pack organized by the Tarsus group will run from March 14th to March 17th this year at the Airport Expo in Dubai. Roger Pellow, Managing Director, Labels and Packaging Group said “This year, we have a lot of exhibitors

participating in the commercial print market and we are looking forward to the package printing sector, which we think is a major growth area. We expect around 300 exhibitors to the Gulf Print & Pack this year.” Middle East and the North African region are a very vital market when looked upon in the world printing and packaging map. Driven by this market, the Gulf Print & Pack has proven to be a constant hit that offers incredible opportu-nities and that addresses exciting developments in the region. Exhibitors to the show can intro-duce their latest technology trends, while building their relationship with existing and new clients. They also have the opportunity to in-crease the sale of their products by holding live demos in the stands. The event gives a platform to reach out to all top printers, contract packers, logistic companies and brand owners under one roof, the added advantage being that they could seek out target buyers through a vast network of media and associations. The 2011 edition of the Gulf Print & Pack will be hosting a unified brand and marketing campaign targeting separately the visitors in the printing and packaging sectors. There will also be a wide-ranging seminar programme held on the show floor that would cover practi-cal case studies as well as detailed reviews of trends and technologies. Digital printing will be the most

discussed topic this year at GPP, where eminent personalities will be discussing on these issues. With market requirements chang-ing rapidly, particularly when it comes to flexible packaging and labels, Muller Martini will demon-strate this Gulf Print & Pack on how printing houses can adopt to these developments with its VSOP (Vari-able Sleeve Offset Printing) press.

The VSOP uses sleeve technology, which means that print sizes can be changed quickly and easily without the need to change all of the print-ing inserts, two light cartridges (known as sleeves) are the only parts that need to be exchanged in order to change the print size. This

method is cost effective for print lengths that change frequently. VSOP printing press offers the same advantage as offset print-ing, such as low printing plate costs. By using standard offset printing plates considerable sav-ing can be made in comparison to other printing processes such as flexo and gravure printing. Other advantages of flexible order management include quick and easy printing plate manufacture and short machine setup times. A quick changeover system allows the machine to be prepared of-fline and when in operation. The machine settings can be stored in an integrated database so that jobs can be printed again at any time. Exhibiting at stand number E330 with Giffin Graphics, they will be showing the latest market developments and will be discuss-ing flexible production solutions for the pressroom.

Q.I. Press Control, suppliers of in-novative and high-tech closed loop control equipment for all web offset printing presses will be having a live demonstration of their closed loop colour system. Exhibiting at stand E330 they offer a total solution for fully automated press control. IDS (In-telligent Density System), their colour control system is used on newspaper presses around the world, nearly two hundred-fold each day, also on hybrid presses. The IDS used in the system is capable to work completely as a “hands-off” system. Accurate colour image data is given as a reference from CIELab*-data to IDS. From that moment, IDS compares actual colour data from a chosen pressline. Within

nano-seconds the IDS controller analyses the real colour value with a target value and decides, which adjustments have to be made. IDS can

inform pressroom management with regards to the quality- and efficiency levels of different jobs, print-runs, different shifts etc.

Epson claims these printers achieve

one of the highest colour gamuts on the market with consistently smooth gradations and also a superior range of natural looking grey tones. Three densities of black, comprising a standard photo or matte black (selected automati-cally depending on the media) plus a light black create a striking black and white output with a high contrast ratio, perfect tonal range, improved grey balance and no colour casting. This combination of black inks also means that prints are free from bronzing with a uniform surface ap-pearance without discernible differ-ence between light and dark areas. The optional inline SpectroProofer ensures consistent, repeatable colour accuracy when using different me-dia, rapidly measuring control strips and colour charts when creating ICC (International Color Consortium) profiles and print verification results.

For the first time Heidelberg Germany invited a Group of Jour-nalists from Middle East to take part in a Middle East press tour to Heidelberg facilities in Germany including the Print Media Academy located in the city of Heidelberg as well as to the Wiesloch- Walldorf

production site. The tour that took place from the 7th to 11th of February also included a visit to two print houses that are loyal customers of Heidelberg as well as the Polar Mohr factory and the R&D center in Hofheim. Though the whole program was quite

intensive, it was well organized and planned. Volker Trapmann, Heidelberg’s marketing manager, responsible for distributor net-work and Dr. Ali Makari, Area Sales Manager hosted the journalists from day one until the final stage of the trip.

The tour started with a visit to the Print Media Academy (PMA). The three legged horse figure outside the PMA glass building, which was opened in the year 2000 prior to Drupa, has been subject to many speculations. Do three legs repre-sent three stages of printing, i.e., preprees, press, postpress? Or is it just an artistic expression from which a viewer can draw his own conclusion? It seems that nobody really knew much about it. The fact is that it does have a certain industrial look, which you can associate with printing. So we left

it there in its three legs for further speculation and continued our tour.Inside PMA, a group of top Heidel-berg executives including Markus Kohler, Area Sales Manager, Hilde Weisser responsible for Media Relations, Wolfgang Roth, Heidel-berg’s Director for Middle East and North Africa, Dirk Henrich, Head of Trade Press and Dr. Joachim Englisch, Senior Vice President for Remarketed Equipment and Dr. Ali Makari welcomed the delegation. After a short tour of the Academy and a group picture everybody headed to Heidelberg headquar-ters to visit Heidelberg’s Print Me-dia Center, where Markus Kohler briefed the delegation about the whole range of Heidelberg’s prod-ucts in the center. The whole range of Heidelberg equipments are installed and inte-grated in the presentation center.

All the presses are equipped with extra features to impress the cus-tomers. The machines available in the demo center included a 5 co-lour XL 75 with coater and 5 color Speedmaster 74 plus coater. These machines are part of Heidelberg’s offering in the medium format. XL 75 is also manufactured in custom-ized configuration with perfecting capability and coating or double coating units plus Star Foil for cold foiling applications. On the other hand Speedmaster 74 is targeted at commercial printers, who want to move to a bigger format than GTO.Speedmaster is still a very impor-tant machine for Heidelberg. It is available in a range of 2 to 8 colour and also in perfecting configura-tions. On day 2 we started our program by visiting the Wiesloch Walldorf manufacturing site near Heidel-berg. Once again Markus Kohler and Dr. Ali Makari guided our tour, they explained how different parts

of the production line, from manu-facturing of parts such as gripper bars and cylinders to the final as-sembly, works. There are 1400 blue collar and 150 white collar employ-ees working in the manufacturing site, of which 80% of them are skilled workers and 20% have been trained by Heidelberg. The size of the manufacturing hall is 620 x120 meters that equals to roughly 11 football fields. Normally it takes 4 to 5 months for an order to be delivered. Every machine is built on order so there is no inventory of finished presses. Since every

machine comes with different options, it is considered a unique and customized press. The space available makes it possible to print test 85 machines at the same time. That is why some call the site the biggest print shop in the world. It takes 10 days to test print a 4 color machine and to do the final adjustments. To conduct a full test, 1000 parameters must be checked by the test printer. No wonder printing press is such an expensive kit! While we were visiting the site, a Speedmaster CD 102 was being assembled for a customer in Saudi

quality control system between printing and prepress was also on display. Heidelberg claims no-body in the industry has the Mini Spot workflow. For the big format, Heidelberg has three machines on display, a 10 color XL 105 perfector, which is considered Heidelberg’s top range machine, 8 colour Speedmaster 102 long perfector, which according to Heidelberg is very popular in the Middle East and the latest member of 70x100 format family, CX 102. The machine that was unveiled at Ipex 2010 is a mix of CD 102 and XL 105. Kohler believes CX is a budget friendly solution for printers in the Middle East, who are keen to have the best features of both machines. What Heidelberg’s Print Media Center demonstrates to visitors is that printing is not about press anymore. It’s more about acces-sories, quality control, peripherals and most importantly, workflow. Followed by the demo center visit, Volker Trapmann kick started the first day presentations by offering an insight into the segmentation of printing volume and Heidel-berg‘s positioning within the world of graphic arts. According to Trapmann, Heidelberg is now fo-cusing more and more on service. That is why last year the company separated the service organization from manufacturing and also from other business units of Heidelberg. Heidelberg has more than 200,000 customers in 170 countries and offers service, which has now become the main priority of the company. Trapmann also offered some interesting global figures on graphic arts. The value of print volume worldwide is now about €380 billion Euro, which is equal to

1% of global GDP. With €29 billion sales generated, German printing industry amounts to roughly ten percent when compared with Ger-many’s key automotive industry. The key message of Trapmann’s presentation was that print is still a very important element of our daily lives and it will remain so in the foreseeable future and Heidel-berg will continue to be a global player. The next presentation by Wolf-gang Roth focused entirely on the Middle East and Heidelberg’s involvement in the region. Roth put forward some interesting fig-ures about the company’s market share in the region. With 36%, Turkey by far is the best market for Heidelberg followed by KSA, UAE and Iran. Heidelberg has been present in the MENA region since 1920. Heidelberg’s agencies and subsidiaries in MENA region employ 400 specialists includ-ing 215 technical staff for after sales service. First shipments of letter presses machine to Middle East took place during 1925 and since then more than 8600 letter presses have been sold to the re-gion. On the other hand more than 12,000 new offset printing units, nearly 7000 new offset printing machines, 2500 new Stahl folding machines and more than 300 CtPs have been installed throughout in the MENA region. The last presentation on the first day of our tour was focused on Prinect, Heidelberg’s flagship workflow. According to Axel Zoller from Heidelberg, more than 220 complete Prinect work-flow systems have been installed throughout the world including Middle East. Zoller maintains that

many big printers using web to print solutions are printing and delivering thousands of small jobs every day. These printers are taking away jobs that tradition-ally belonged to small printers. In such a back drop, integration has become vital even for small and medium printers. Heidelberg claims, with Prinect that consists of several modules printers can easily access consistent and real time available data throughout the production. Job specifica-tions and master data have only to be entered once. Setup data for machines connected online and for data terminals are available in real time. Furthermore, process data captured during processing are all delivered to one place that guarantees real time as well as consistent job tracking and job reporting throughout the system. Other benefits include one unified user interface that can control the entire production and scheduling and re scheduling can be performed real time on live data.

Arabia. At the moment, the fac-tory’s output is 18 printing units a day. The maximum capacity of the site is about 25 units a day. Based on the configuration of machines being assembled, you could clearly realize that now-a-days long perfectors are becoming quite popular among printers. After our morning tour we met Stephan Plenz , member of the management board , who is re-sponsible for Heidelberg’s equip-ment division. In his presentation Plenz gave a rather clear picture of Heidelberg’s extensive portfolio including Hardware, Software and Brainware for Commercial and Packaging Print. He also announced that the company is preparing a solution consisting not just of a digital press but team-ing that device with an Anicolor sheetfed litho press and a soft-ware controller for parceling jobs between the two. Heidelberg does not believe in offset versus digital strategy. Instead Plenz maintains that customers need an efficient solution for short run printing. Heidelberg is targeting value and performance segments within digital printing arena where the runs are between 60 to 120 pages per minute and machines cost be-tween 100,000 to 50,00,000 Euros. Plenz claims Heidelberg’s solution

offers customers the same quality and functionality that they expect from a digital device. Plenz also maintained that the runs above 200 copies can go straight to Speedmaster 52 Anicolor and for quantities less than 200 cop-ies; we have to check on what percentage is variable data. Based on Heidelberg’s research the volume of variable data printing is anywhere between 5 to 7%. So the big idea of variable data as the biggest advantage of digital print-ing never really took off. Instead it went straight to Internet. And any amount of printing jobs below 200 that needs offset quality still can be printed with Anicolor and the rest can be sent to digital device. The idea at least seems good on paper but we have to wait and see if the system can really deliver in a real commercial printing environ-ment.Followed by the presentation of Plenz, there was another product demonstration scheduled. This time the focus was on post-press, packaging printing and peripherals such as Cut Star and perfect binding solutions such as Eurobind. Kohler explained the advantages of some of the features used in Heidelberg’s presses such as single suction tape used in feeder that prevents the misalignment of the sheet in the infeed. After the second product demonstration, Marcel Kiessling, Member of the Executive Board, who is responsible for Heidelberg Service, offered a presentation on the background and the objectives of Heidelberg’s service division. Kiessling listed the challenges that printers are facing today including eroding prices, increasing costs for labour and raw materials and environmental concerns.Kiessling also said that web to print has become an important player for some printers, helping them to increase their revenue and differentiates themselves from

the rest. Many small and medium printers now want to know more about this new trend. The role of print in media mix is changing as well. Printers who want to be a communication provider for their customers have to be aware of what kind of electronic media is available so they can become me-dia neutral communication sup-plier instead of an offset printer. That means they can deliver the content that has been printed through several other channels as well. Runs are becoming smaller so there is no doubt that digital printing is a necessity. So any printing company today needs some kind of a printing capabil-ity. And that is why Heidelberg is re-entering the digital market. It is no secret that printers in indus-trialized countries are struggling to make a profit. In Germany, for example the gap between the ‘rich and the poor’ is increasing. During 2004-2008, even before the recession kicked in, 30% of the German printing companies achieved an average profit mar-gin of more than 5%. Meanwhile 50% generated no continuous profit margin and 20% gener-ated losses that became credit defaults. In order for printers to be successful in such a tough environment, first they have to opt for the right technology and second they must have access to efficient service from their supplier. That is why service has become a crucial part of Heidel-berg’s offering to its customers. Heidelberg service division with 4000 expert’s worldwide, offer business development, training, process optimization, productiv-ity optimization and last but not the least technical services, which include remote diagnosis as well. Followed by Kiessling’s presenta-tion and another round of prod-uct demonstration we headed back to our hotel to look ahead for another busy day tomorrow.

On the third day of our tour de force, we visited two Heidelberg customers who have won CIPPI award. What both printers had in common was that both were tak-ing advantage of the Prinect con-nectivity capabilities to achieve full integration within their print houses. The first print house we visited was Druckerei Bauer. The

company is a successful package printer with a wide range of Heidelberg equipment including XL 105-6+L, CD 102-5+L, Dymatrix 105 CS, Diana Pro and more. The company produces more than 250 million folding boxes per year for pharmaceutical industry, health care, and chemical industry and also for the food industry. Despite

On the last day of our trip we visited Polar factory and its R&D center in Hofheim. Michael Neugart, Polar’s managing direc-tor welcomed the delegation and gave a general overview of the company. Polar, first known as Adolf Mohr Maschinenfabrik was established in 1906 as a fur-niture manufacturer. Now it sells its entire product range under the POLAR brand name. As an independent family firm, POLAR has developed into a major manu-facturer for high-speed cutters as well as for matching peripherals in the graphical industry. Helped by a close partnership with sales part-ners, POLAR began positioning itself as a global sales and service organization back in 1949. Today, POLAR maintains close contact with its customers via a network of 200 agencies and branches in 170 countries. Since 1949 Polar has exclusive global distribution agreement with Heidelberg. During his presentation, Neugart claimed that 60% of the Middle East and African market for high speed cutters belong to Polar. On the other hand 6% of Polar’s total production in 2008 went to Middle East and Africa. Though Middle East is a growing market for Polar,

it is unpredictable with a fluctuat-ing market. The number of Polar equipment sold to Middle East varies drastically from year to year; it can be as low as 18 or as high as 150 units. Polar believes that today accessories and peripherals such as automatic loading, jog-ging, buffering, unloading are as necessary as the cutting machine itself because they save time and money, while streamlining the whole print production process. Many printers frequently use the cutting machine as a table for jog-ging papers, while the machine sits idle. This downtime is very costly for printers because instead of cut-ting, the expensive machine is used as a table. That is why peripherals are more and more important. During our visit to the factory and R&D center we could experience how automation in postpress can contribute to improvement in print production and quality. Polar also is very much involved in label industry. The company’s offering for label industry includes Single-Head Bander BS-23 for automatic banding of square-cut packs, Label System SC(20,21 and 25) for high automatic in-line production of square-cut labels with integrated banding, Stand-Alone Die Cutter DC-M for die-cutting packs with manual loading, Label System DC-11 for die-cutting of compressible materials with counter pressure system and manual loading and Label System DCC-11 for a highly automated in-line production pro-cess of banded die-cut labels with counter pressure. Our tour guide

for Polar factory was Peter Rejmers, who is responsible for product de-velopment. His explanation about the details was interesting as well as intimidating. When you think about all the effort that goes to manufacture high quality piece of kit you feel that there are so many things that as a journalist you have to learn to understand the indus-try as a whole. There were lots of interesting details to learn in from the Polar manufacturing site and its R& D center. For example the way, air knife works in order to cut the plastics efficiently or the pulse generator used in the cutting machine. Every time the spindle makes one revolution the pulse generator generates 8000 clicks. This level of accuracy makes Polar equipment expensive and at the same time reliable. However many printers are going through tough times, so it is a big dilemma for them to decide in terms of quality vs price.

My four day trip to Germany was informative and mind opening. We always talk about the inva-sion of Chinese manufactures and how they are capturing market share within the graphic arts industry but quality is not something that you can achieve overnight. It is the result of

many years of experience, of hard work and legacy. Heidel-berg and Polar are not the only manufacturers that are offering high quality products. There are of course others including Chinese manufacturers. But all of them have to go through the similar path.

the recession, Matthias Bauer the company’s project manager says that they were able to maintain their growth and even thrive. According to Bauer, the secret is their full integration and efficient use of workflow that includes MIS Prinance and professional ERP for

warehouse management. The next print house that we visited, Metzg-erdruck also had the similar argu-ment. Metzger is fully integrated to postpress system using Polar’s 137 XT Autotrim cutting solution. Metzgerdruck is the first com-pany that successfully integrated

postpress stage to the whole print production workflow. Using new Polar system the company saved on one operator. So instead of two, the whole system is managed by one person only. Since labour is expensive in Germany, the savings are significant.
