What is Mental Health and Disorder

Mental health--is a state of well-being in which individual realizes his or her own abilities to cope with normal stresses of life.

Mental Disorder--a collectively of all diagnosable mental disorders or health condition that are characterized by behavior associated with distress and impaired functioning.

- 1 in 4 Americans ages 18 and older suffer from diagnosable mental disorder in a given year.

- 10-20% of children and adolescents experience mental disorders.

- 45% of persons with any mental disorders meet criteria for having 2 or more disorders.

- 30% of college students reported feeling so depressed that made it difficult for them to function

ArticleHealth Promotion Individuals with Mental Health Disorders: A Cluster Preference Randomized Controlled Trial

- The study was conducted in sheltered housing organizations in the Flanders region (Belgium)

- Background: Antipsychotic drugs, poor eating habits, and high prevalence of obesity and overweight

- Primary outcomes were seeing changes in body weight, Body weight Body Mass Index (BMI), waist circumference and fat mass

- Secondary outcomes were targeting physical activity level, eating behavior change, health-related quality of life and psychiatric symptom severity

- People aged 18-75 years living in sheltered housing in the Flander regions (Belgium)

- Persons who aged younger than 18 years of age, 75 years or older, with cognitive impairment, and fitted with a gastric ring or pacemaker were excluded

Intervention ApproachHealth Promotion on Well-Balanced Eating and Healthy Physical

Activity

- To look at the effectiveness of the intervention program

- To see if there is a correlation between lifestyle changes, such as physical activities and eating behavior, and mental health condition.

- People with mental disorders are at higher risk of being overweight and obese compared to the general population

- CHANGING BAD BEHAVIOURS- Promote healthy eating (smoking, poor eating habits...etc)

Program Intervention- (a) Psychoeducation and behavioural group sessions +(b) supervised exercise sessions +(c) individual support=10-week intervention period, followed by a 24-week post-intervention period.

- The intervention was a success in seeing changes in the study population

- Group-based interventions works better in improving physical health of mentally ill patients
