Why More Men Are Considering Cosmetic Dermatology

To look and feel refined, not tired

To look as healthy and vital on the outside as they feel on the inside

To feel confident and competitive in the corporate environment

IntroThese are just some of the many reasons our male patients give for turning to cosmetic dermatology. Despite one of the industry’s most common misconceptions, cosmetic dermatology is not designed for women. In fact, 15 percent of our patients are men; a number that reflects a larger global trend towards increased use of cosmetic solutions among men.

The difference between dermatology for men and women is both subtle and significant. While the treatments themselves may be the same, the reasons, results and underlying anatomy are not. In this guide we will review some of the most common frustrations that bring men in to see a dermatologist and discuss how they can be overcome, both in the hands of an expert and at home.

The Trend Towards Professional Male Skin CareThese days we are seeing a significant industry shift away from the traditional gender dichotomy of professional skin care. More and more men are turning to cosmetic products and treatments as a solution to their own skin conditions and imperfections.

Fundamentally, skin care best practices and cosmetic treatments are the same for men and women — what differs is the patient. Men turn to cosmetic dermatology for a different set of reasons than women: they want to emphasize their masculine features, regain a youthful sense of strength and rid themselves of early signs of aging. Their body composition is different, too.

Doctors and nurses with advanced training in treating men can provide particular value to this demographic as their participation in the cosmetic dermatology grows. According to Dr. Humphrey: “Not every skin care professional has the same expertise in treating a male face.”

Bone, fat and muscle composition differ between men and women, so treatments for a male patient must be tailored to the male aesthetic and anatomy.

Preventative and Corrective SolutionsPreventative and Corrective SolutionsFor men and women both, the approach to advanced cosmetic treatments and evidence-based cosmeceuticals can be both preventative and corrective. Many people don’t give their skin much consideration until they are dealing with the physical signs of aging, such as wrinkles, or sunspots. Some, on the other hand, are more proactive, and consider treatments and products that can benefit them before sun damage and signs of aging set in. The good news is that, regardless of timing, cosmetic dermatology can play an impactful role in changing how you see yourself.

Some of the reasons men book a consultation with our team are more common than others. Hollow, sagging cheeks, an overall fatigued appearance, dark under-eye circles, belly fat, double chins and weak facial structure — here we address some of the more prevalent concerns among our male patients to explain why they’re so common and

how best to overcome them.

Dull skin and under-eye circles are among the most common complaints we hear. They each have several contributing factors, ranging from inadequate skin care (including exfoliation and moisturization) to more generalized issues, like stress and a poor diet. Of course aging is one of the primary causes and unlike some of the others, you can’t exactly “fix” getting older with a new topical product or more sleep. Luckily that doesn’t mean that you just have to live with the puffy eyes or tired expression that’s currently staring you back in the mirror.

A good starting point for your skin is a topical antioxidant like CE Ferulic. This product prevents against cellular damage that makes the skin look prematurely old. If you’re looking for a more immediate or greater impact consider Clear + Brilliant. The gentle laser procedure, which can also help to decrease hyperpigmentation, sunspots and large pores, targets the surface of the skin, replacing the visible dermal layer with healthier, younger looking skin.

To rid yourself of those under-eye bags, on the other hand, HA fillers can be most effective. The injectable procedure is

designed to smooth wrinkles, fill hollows and may even stimulate collagen production. According to Dr. Katie Beleznay:

“There are key differences in how we treat men’s and women’s skin. Treating men’s skin requires a special approach in order to achieve results that are desirable yet subtle. It’s important to ensure the distinctive features of a man’s face are maintained while any areas of concern are addressed.

“Men are becoming more aware of the importance of maintaining healthy skin, and as a result, they’re turning to cosmetic dermatologists for guidance. Whether you’re searching for the right skin care product or considering a cosmetic procedure, we can customize a treatment plan for you.”

A proper skin care program can help restore a more youthful look.

Dull Fine lines and wrinkles are one of the many signs of aging that differ between men and women. For women, the hands of time are most evident around the mouth, while for men wrinkles are typically deepest and most concentrated on the forehead. A physician with experience treating men for signs of aging will know how best to target these deeper lines—Dr. Humphrey shares:

“That’s why it’s important for men to pick a cosmetic dermatology provider who has expertise in a male-specific aesthetic. It is possible to be as specific and targeted with their concerns as it is with the concerns of a female patient.”

HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator and Triple Lipid Restore work in combination to smoothen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. HA5 restores the skin’s natural ability to produce hyaluronic acid — a carbohydrate that keeps skin plump and voluminous, while Triple Lipid Cream refills naturally occurring lipids and provides intense moisture to aging skin.

In recent years, as more and more men looked for a solution to signs of aging, “Brotox” began to make its way through the industry. We hesitate to call it a trend — after all, neuromodulators have been used to minimize visible wrinkles since

Dr. Carruthers discovered their dermatological application in the 1980s. Perhaps the most significant impact of the Brotox evolution is a greater acceptance of dermatological practices among men. As Dr. Carruthers explains:

“Today’s man is just as inundated with selfies and other shared images as today’s woman — and they’re embracing it, as seen by the new sculpted beards and hairstyles, stylish clothing and dedication to the gym.

“With strategic facial injections of botulinum toxin neuromodulators, unwanted frown lines can soften and angry low brows can lift. Positivity of facial expression is also subtly enhanced with facial fillers which can reflate sunken cheeks, restore a man’s defined jaw line and vitality.”

As new generation enters the workforce, looking and feeling rejuvenated can have a huge impact on maintaining a competitive edge.

Men naturally have less soft tissue in the cheeks and tend to experience more volume loss with age, which leads to hollow, tired looking cheeks.

The main reason cheeks become hollow over time is volume loss related to bony remodeling and fat reduction. Among men this can result in premature signs of aging, particularly if they have undergone significant weight loss that leaves their face with additional loose skin. Furthermore, men tend to have a leaner overall body composition, making them particularly susceptible to hollow cheeks as they age. Fat loss in the cheeks combined with fat loss under the eyes can lead to an aged and hollow look that many men express concern about.

As traditional solutions involved surgery, many are still reluctant or shy to discuss these concerns with a dermatologist. In fact, there are many technological advancements that can help.

Topical products like HA5, HA Intensifier and TNS Essentials, that are designed to stimulate collagen production, can improve skin quality, texture and the suppleness of the skin. Together they hydrate, plump and smoothen your skin to improve the overall appearance of areas that are beginning to reveal your age.

HA fillers can also help in this area; these injectable treatments replenish your skin’s deteriorating supply of hyaluronic acid in order to regain volume. They work beyond the surface layer of the skin to effect more deeply rooted, long-term change. Again seeing a cosmetic dermatologist who understands the male anatomy and proportion is paramount to successful and natural rejuvenation.

These injectable treatments combined with topical and laser / light based devices help to restore this area.

Self-esteem issues related the jawline and under the chin region are not something limited to age (or gender) — however, a double chin is often one first reminders that your body is no longer invincible and one of the most stubborn concerns to overcome. Due to their prominent location you can’t hide a double chin or other types of facial fullness, which means that they can’t be excluded from a first impression or photograph. That’s why so many of our patients turn to us for help.

Belkyra has taken over the landscape in terms of a permanent contouring solution for submental (or under the chin) fullness. The reasons are clear: just 2-4 short injectable treatments can rid you of the double chin that’s been plaguing you for years (or a lifetime).

These injections include deoxycholic acid, a substance that exists naturally in your body, and can break down targeted fat. According to Dr. Rossi:

“Submental fat (or a double chin) decreases the definition of the jawline, which is inherently associated with an attractive male aesthetic. For male patients who would rather avoid surgical procedures and long recovery periods, Belkyra is an effective solution that targets unwanted fat and causes it to break down naturally. The minimal to zero downtime involved is quite appealing for men who want to address this concern without interrupting their routine”

Along with other facial contouring solutions, such as the CoolMini, Belkyra can help you to feel achieve the profile you have always desired. Dr. Humphrey was actively involved in clinical trials of Belkyra, and continues to travel the globe as an Educator of the world’s top physicians.

Submental Fullness

Men struggle with submental fat for several reasons, including age, diet, lifestyle and genetics —however many wish to avoid surgical solutions.

Spare Tire or Muffin TopIt’s no great secret that men and women store fat differently. Everything from biology to lifestyle can play a role in how, when and where excess fat manifests. Among men, one of the primary areas of excess fat buildup is around the center. Some call it a beer belly, others a spare tire — regardless, as men age, this is where fat tends to concentrate.

Where age really starts to play a factor is in men’s ability to shed these unwanted pounds. In your youth it may have felt easy to bulk up or trim down, but once you hit your thirties this begins to become a lot more challenging. Some of our male patients find that despite proper diet and exercise, they just can’t seem to achieve the physique they’re after — that’s where we recommend CoolSculpting. The advanced technology gently freezes and ultimately destroys your unwanted fat cells. In the weeks and months following the treatment, your body naturally disposes of the dead cells and the localized fat simply disappears. With a variety of applicators, CoolSculpting is a highly customizable treatment, allowing you to target even the trickiest of trouble spots.

Sunspots and Other Sun Damage

As Baby Boomers and Gen Xers continue to age, the effects of improper sun protection appear in greater magnitude—particularly among men. And yet, this is a lesson that subsequent generations haven’t learned fast enough. Skin cancer continues to be on the rise, and studies have shown that men are actually at a higher risk.

The first step — regardless of gender — is preventative. Broad spectrum sunscreens containing zinc and titanium, when applied correctly, can effectively protect your skin from the harsh effects of direct sun exposure. Sunscreen should be a fundamental part of any morning skin care routine, even when skies are

There are many formulations of skin care products and sunscreens these days, that preventative measures no longer need to be a hassle for men. Lightweight, non-greasy formulations make it easy for men, even those with facial hair.

grey and your calendar sees you spending all day at the office. And as quality sunscreens now cater to specific skin types, excuses of oily or combination skin are no longer justified — there’s a formulation for everyone.

If you’re looking for a corrective solution for sunspots and other sun damage that has already appeared, we typically suggest Intense Pulsed Light. IPL, as it’s more commonly known, uses photo-rejuvenation to target pigmentation imbalances, including brown spots and redness. Bonus: it also stimulates collagen production which helps maintain more revitalized looking skin.

This particular condition can come in many forms, ranging from broken capillaries to rosacea.

The clinical solution is Excel V, a gentle laser treatment that targets skin redness of any size and depth to help clear your skin and restore your natural tone and colour.

For every day care, try adding Phloretin CF to your arsenal. The antioxidant provides unrivalled protection against redness, as well as free-radical formation and cellular damage.

Blood Vessel Redness

Dissatisfaction with general facial shape is another common complaint we often hear at our practice. While everyone is different, there are certain indisputable features that make men classically handsome and distinguished. Jawline, cheekbones, nose and brow bone often come to mind when we think of a strong, masculine aesthetic; Dr. Terrence Keaney comments.

“A masculine face is anatomically unique — it’s wider, it features more a prominent forehead, and it has less soft tissue. A more pronounced jawline and cheekbones are often thought to be the most attractive elements of a masculine face. Enhancing these masculine facial features in a subtle and natural looking way can help male patients achieve their aesthetic goals.”

Keaney reminds us that the patient’s aesthetic concerns and goals should be the primary driver of any treatment or cosmetic program.

Like any treatments we recommend, the solution to these individual areas is completely customizable to your facial structure and desired results. A dermatologist team with experience and expertise in male facial accentuation can help these changes come to life and look natural.

Weak Features

ConclusionIn many cases, the skin conditions or aesthetic concerns that male patients experience and describe are require unique consideration. Furrowed brow, excess stomach weight and hollow cheeks, for instance, are seen in much higher propensity among a male demographic. In other cases, the causes and symptoms we see and hear are consistent across genders, and yet the solution still requires expert nuance to address the characteristics of a male aesthetic, anatomy and a man’s desired results.
