WHEREAS, Unemployment in the Nation and Common- wealth has dramatically increased, thus causing grave financial and human suffering for many Pennsylvanians now unemployed or recently unemployed. Without im- mediate and direct financial assistance through the pres- ent Unemployment Compensation program, families could have become destitute. The Pennsylvania Labor and Industry Department and its Bureau of Employment Security instituted dramatic steps to meet expectations of nnemployed, needy Pennsylvanians. such steps in- cluded obtaining Federal funds for seven hundred fifty temporary Bureau employees to handle applications and 'hocks and allowing for mail-in applications for claims. Further extended Office hours On and Holidays kept processing of applications up to date. The diligence and attitude of the employees of the Bureau of Employment Security is exemplary as has been the proper and swift action of the Department and Bureau to meet rising needs for their service in time of economic strife.
