A HOMECOMING FOR STOUDAMIRE • When Memphis travels to Rice for Wednes-

day’s match-up, it will be a homecoming — of sorts — for Tigers assistant coach Damon Stou-damire.

• Stoudamire, who is a Portland, Ore., native, started his professional career in college basket-ball on Ben Braun’s Rice staff in 2008-09.

• That season, Stoudamire served as the Owls’ Director of Player Development.

• Near the end of the 2008-09 season, Stoudamire left Rice to join the NBA Memphis Grizzlies staff as an assistant.

HOUSTON MEMORIES/PART I • No matter the outcome of Wednesday’s game

or future encounters Memphis plays in Space City USA, the city of Houston will always hold a special place in the hearts of Tiger Nation.

• That fondness for Houston comes from the 2008 NCAA Tournament when the Tigers won the South Region at Reliant Stadium.

• Memphis started its run to the 2008 NCAA title game in Little Rock, Ark., with the tournament’s firsttworounds. Then, theTigersmovedontoHouston, where they defeated Michigan State and Texas en route to the Final Four.

HOUSTON MEMORIES/PART II • Memphis’ 2009-10 trip to Rice provided more

great memories for Tigers fans, as the 80-68 win over the Owls put Memphis in the NCAA re-cord books.

• The victory gave the Tigers the NCAA Division I record for the most-consecutive regular season wins in league play at 52 straight. The victory

FEAR THE OWLS AT TUDOR (FORMERLY AUTRY COURT) • Although the renovations took the famed cur-

tain away (Owls’ student section used to have “Fear The Curtain” t-shirts), Autry Court at Tu-dor Fieldhouse has been a tough place for the Tigers.

• Since Conference USA realigned in 2005-06, Memphis has made three trips to the Owls’ on-campus facility and won two of the three meet-ings by an average margin of 8.5 points (84-79 in 2005-06; 80-68 in 2009-10).

• Memphis dropped a 67-52 decision to the Owls in its last trip to Tudor Fieldhouse in 2010-11.

TIGERS AMONG ELITE GROUP • Memphis is among the winningest NCAA Divi-

sion I programs since 2000-01 and 2005-06, but it doesn’t end there.

• The Tigers are a part of another elite group at the NCAA Division I level.

• Memphis is one of nine programs that has won 20 or more games each of the last 10 seasons.

• The following lists the nine NCAA Division I programs that have 20 or more wins the each of the last 10 years (2002-03 to 2011-12):

JANUARY GOOD FOR TIGERS • While Memphis has had success in December

since 1999-2000 (68-29 record), January has proven to be a better month for the Tigers.

• Since 1999-2000, the Tigers have an impressive 88-21 record (.807 winning percentage) in the month of January.

• Memphis has won 56 of its last 63 January games (.889 winning percentage).

IT’S A BLOCK PARTY • It took a few games into the season, but the Ti-

gers are getting back to their “blocking” ways. • After leading C-USA in blocks a year ago at 5.6

bpg, Memphis began 2012-13 averaging only 3.9blockspercontestinthefirstsevengames(27 total blocks).

• Well, the Tigers have picked up their intensity on the defensive end in the last eight games with 59 total blocks (7.4 bpg).

• In each of the last eight games, Memphis had no fewer than four blocks, including a season-high 11 swats in the Jan. 4 win at Tennessee. The Ti-gers added 10 swats in their Jan. 12 victory at UAB.

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE THE MAINLAND • Junior Joe Jacksonisafirmbelieverinthat,as

he’s played rather well in the Tigers’ 10 games since returning from The Bahamas.

• In those 10 contests, the 6-foot-1 guard aver-

aged 16.0 points, 5.3 assists and 2.9 rebounds. • Jacksonnetteddoublefiguresinall10contests,

including 20 points in the Tigers’ Jan. 4 win at Tennessee.

• For his performance versus the Volunteers, Jackson was named Conference USA Player of the Week for Dec. 31-Jan. 6.

• However, it’s his shooting percentages that are even better. Jackson is hitting 57.6 percent from thefield,48.1percentfromthearcand71.9per-cent from the free throw line.

• The Memphis, Tenn., native also dished out 53 assists compared to 31 turnovers for a 1.7 assist-to-turnover ratio.

THE BAHAMAS AND THE AFTER • Tiger Nation may want to refer to “it” as T.B.

(through Bahamas) and A.B. (After Bahamas).

• Memphis also was the only men’s basketball program in Conference USA to earn an NCAA Public Recognition Award.

• The NCAA Public Recognition Awards are based on the sports’ most-recent multi-year Ac-ademic Progress Rate (APR). This year, the top performing APR scores ranged from 978 to a perfect 1,000. The most-recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years.

• That’s the way head coach Josh Pastner and his squad are looking at it.

• Despite the 1-2 record in the Battle 4 Atlantis in The Bahamas, Pastner and his team are taking what they learned from that tournament and us-ing those lessons to get better.

D.J.’S CAREER NIGHT/PART II • Earlier this season, D.J. Stephens set career

highs on the offensive end versus Minnesota Nov. 23 (Career Night Part I), scoring 15 points and hitting three treys.

• In the Tigers’ Dec. 28 game versus Oral Rob-erts, the 6-foot-5 forward put up career numbers defensively.

• Stephens posted career bests for rebounds (14) in the win over the Golden Eagles.

D.J.’S CAREER NIGHT/PART III • Once again, D.J. Stephens set a career high in

the Tigers’ 69-53 victory over UAB Jan. 12. • The Killeen, Texas, native blocked a career-best

six shots in the win. • The six blocks bested his previous career high

of five swats twice earlier this season versusOral Roberts Dec. 28 and Tennessee Jan. 4.

“G” - FENSE, “G” - FENSE • Junior Geron Johnson, who is called “G” by

histeammates, hasdefinitelyhelpedtheTigers’defense, and the team’s defensive numbers prove it.

• But, his individual defensive performance in Memphis’ Dec. 28 win over Oral Roberts was impressive.

• In the contest, Johnson was the primary defend-er on the Golden Eagles’ leading scorer, Warren Niles.

• Niles entered the contest with a 21.3 scoring av-erage (ninth in the nation) and a 53 percent clip from the arc.

• “G” held Niles to only two points on 1-of-11 shootingfromthefieldand0-of-6fromthearc.
