Memories of Hersh by Barry Holchin

Our long-time friend and Sierra Club collaborator, Hersh Kelley, died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, June 10, his Sudoku book by his side.

Hersh Kelley at the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter Political Awards Ceremony 2012 (photo by Al Sattler) Since mid-May, he was living in a care facility in RPV, recovering from an emergency spinal surgery, made necessary due to a fall. He was looking forward to being able to become active again, and gave his all in the way of PT toward that end, but it was not to be. He had had three previous very significant spinal surgeries, requiring continuous fusion from L5 to T5.

I met Hersh in the early 80s, at a time when he participated in our PVSB weekly, fast conditioning hikes and many of the hikes I led on the weekends. Whereas most of us took the Basic Mountaineering Training Course, Hersh was one of the few to also take the Advanced Course. He became an avid (Hersh, p.2)

(Hersh, from p.1) hiker, backpacker and bicyclist and we shared many outdoor adventures together, both locally and globally, international examples being: Rich Henke’s 1994 trek in Nepal; Judy Shane’s first Sierra Club New Zealand hiking trip; and the West Coast Trail (Vancouver Island) backpack that Hersh, Karen and I did with Whittier friends, a memorable and exciting six days together.

We shared many domestic adventures, too. One notable trip was our first SC peak climb, attempting Ritter and Banner with Steve Miller, during which I tore my quadriceps muscle and Steve tore his boot sole, so we all

hobbled back out with them hauling out my gear. Another was a backpack to Evolution Valley with John Healy, with Hersh having his normal problems with high altitude sickness (HAS), and I with my back pains, so we hobbled out the west side to Florence Lake and hitched rides to Fresno.

This turned out to be a prelude to another adventure wherein we attempted the John Muir Trail, but once again Hersh suffered from HAS, and I with my pain issues. This time, Karen and I had to hitchhike out the west side. Hersh, Karen and I also did multiple multi-day bike rides all along the West Coast

with Whittier friends, with me usually trying to keep up with Hersh, but to no avail. We also went white water rafting on the Kern River, including a Class 5 rapid (Royal Flush).

I believe Hersh joined our PVSB Conservation Committee in the late 90s. He immediately put to use his considerable management and communication skills, gained from managing large software projects at CSC and NCR, and soon was elected to chair our Executive Committee. When the folks at the Angeles Chapter were exposed to his capabilities, he was soon elected to chair that body, and served a three year stint in that capacity. He often consulted with me regarding issues that came up, and it was very clear that he was doing another outstanding job. I believe the organization will long benefit from changes he instituted. He was currently serving on the PVSB Ex Com in Special Projects.

We regarded Hersh as one of our family, and my kids, Jim and Lisa, especially loved engaging him in conversation during our holiday get-togethers, valuing his wisdom and wit. We missed him when he moved to Roseburg, Oregon to care for his ailing mother. Except for brief periods of recovery between surgeries, he was always very active, both mentally and physically. He was highly talented and enjoyed using his skills to plan and execute many projects, which he and I worked on at his home and ours. He loved competition, especially a game of Hearts with our friends and our running Knock Rummy game. I will hold onto those score sheets as a reminder of the great times we shared together. (Hersh, p.3)

Hersh was very influential in my early years of activism and I’ll never forget it. RIP Hersh. You earned it and then some. --Bill Brand, Redondo Beach City Councilmember

Hersh was a good man and solidifying force. When we recently spoke he was in good spirits. I told him what an inspiration he was to me and how he helped to get our Sierra Club group more involved in conservation issues. . . . He humbly replied that he did not think he was an inspiration, and was surprised that I thought so. And he said he wanted all of us to continue to push for the issues we care so deeply about.--Dean Francois, PVSB ExCom

__________________________________________________________________________________________ (Awards, from p.1) Judy Shane. The first trip Judy organized for Sierra Club was a two week hiking trip to New Zealand, a country she called home for nearly a decade. Since she became a Sierra Club leader, she has led eight trips to New Zealand and over two dozen bus trips to national parks. Judy’s joy is bringing people to wild places they may not visit on their own. Her reward has been sharing a love of nature while hiking on beautiful trails, seeing a fellowship of like-minded people grow around her, and encouraging people to treasure the environment. Her bus trips, day outings, and international trips have drawn over 1,000 hiking participants over the years. She is known as a no-nonsense leader who is well organized, dedicated, enthusiastic, and an example for others. Plus, she is really fun!

Diane Wood has been Secretary for the Executive Committee of the Palos Verdes-South Bay Regional Group since April 2011. It's a vital position for recording the decisions and discussions of the group ExCom. Being imminently organized and thorough, several times when a question has arisen about what a decision was, she has been able to quickly refer to the minutes and provide the answer. Diane has also participated in interviews of candidates for public office and helped with tabling, informing the public about the Sierra Club and recruiting new members.

As part of the celebration of the Centennial of the National Parks Service, the Keynote speaker was David Smith, the Superintendent of Joshua Tree National Park. He spoke about the wonders of the Joshua Tree National Park, and the greatly increased numbers of visitors it has.

He also spent a little time talking about some of the impacts humans are having on the Park. One issue is that global warming has caused the lower elevations of the park to be hot enough that no new Joshua Trees can start growing, although existing ones are still alive. Another issue is that non-native annual grasses, especially cheat grass and red brome, are growing in the Park where they never grew before, fertilized by nitrogen oxides from Los Angeles smog. When these grasses dry out, they burn readily, allowing fires to burn large areas of the desert that were not able to support a sustained fire before. These fires have killed Joshua Trees which will take

decades if not centuries to re-grow. Meanwhile, the grasses re-seed readily after a fire, ready to burn again, so Joshua Trees will not have a chance to get re-established.

Hike Carefully! Nature is Fragile by Al Sattler

The Palos Verdes Nature Preserve has become extremely popular with hikers, bikers, runners, and families getting outdoors. It is wonderful that people are enjoying this beautiful area. However, please remember that this nature preserve is vital to ensure the continued survival of rare and endangered wildlife and the plants that support them. Many of the plants are dormant now, waiting for the rain to grow again. They are not dead, even though they may look that way. Please stay on the named trails to avoid breaking the plants, so that our endangered wildlife can survive. One person's misstep may seem inconsequential, but multiplied by thousands, the consequence is bare earth.
