America’s largest and best-known grassroots environmental organization, Sierra Club, is also its most effective. The Club’s 1.3 million members and supporters have helped to protect more than 250 million acres of wildlands, more than 12,000 miles of wild and scenic rivers, and many national treasures. The Club’s core activities are public education, grassroots activism, and lobbying for environmental issues. In addition, the Club has a well-developed and influential presence in book and magazine publishing, as well as in adventure travel, with over 20,000 outings per year. Sierra Club also has an extensive inner city outings program serving 15,000 disadvantaged youths and adults annually. Sierra Club notecards and holiday cards present scenes of wildlife, land-scapes, and details from the natural world. Those featuring animals include notes on the subject’s natural history. All cards are printed with soy-based inks on recycled paper, and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of these cards supports Sierra Club’s efforts to preserve and protect the planet.

All of Pomegranate’s Sierra Club products are printed on recycled paper.

Sierra Club’s mission:

To explore, enjoy and protect the wild places of the earth;

To practice and promote the responsible use of the earth’s ecosystems and resources;

To educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment;

And to use all lawful means to carry out these objectives.

SC0900Anatomy of a TreeNot only do trees create most of the oxygen that we breathe, they also absorb and help prevent toxins from entering Earth’s atmosphere, provide habitat for creatures, and serve as a vital link in various ecosystems. With images and text, this poster explains photosynthesis, the difference between a conifer and a broadleaf tree, the sections of a tree, the importance of roots, how annual rings serve as historical records, and the biology of fruits and seeds. Cross-sectional drawings of water flow within a tree and a tree trunk, along with a summary and essential tree facts, round out the presentation of these amazing gifts from nature.

• $12.00 US rolled or flat • $16.00 US shrinkwrapped • 24 x 36 in.

Posters

SC0901Rainforests

Rainforests, the oldest and one of the most important of Earth’s ecosystems, are major regulators of our atmosphere. About 50 percent of all plant and animal species live in tropical rainforests; 25 percent of all

medicines derive from rainforest plants. This poster describes each layer of the rainforest ecosystem, from the forest floor to the emergents (the tallest trees)—a rainforest tree illustrated alongside a scaled high-

rise emphasizes the depth of each layer. World maps show the range of the rainforests; a deforestation alert drives home the message of what the future may hold for these diminishing ecosystems.

SC0903Endangered and Threatened Animals of North AmericaA dozen large, colorful photographs by Art Wolfe constitute a dramatic visual plea for saving the animals. The portraits reveal the majesty of twelve of our favorite friends: the red wolf, American manatee, bald eagle, bighorn sheep, sea otter, California condor, gray wolf, Florida panther, grizzly bear, Steller’s sea lion, Florida key deer, and northern spotted owl. Detailed descriptive text about the animals’ characteristics and their likely fate accompanies the images. Whether endangered (at high risk of extinction) or threatened (could become endangered or go extinct), the animals pictured here represent a potential woeful loss for planet Earth.

SC0902Wetlands

Coastal (estuarine) and inland wetlands exist on every continent but Antarctica. Sweeping artwork in this poster indicates the myriad flora and fauna—including

nearly half of our threatened or endangered species—that thrive in swamps, wet meadows, floodplains, and other areas. Statistics underscore the devastation of the

wetlands: states that have depleted 80 percent or more of their wetlands (Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri, California) have experienced the nation’s worst flooding in

recent years. Compelling text explains more about the wetlands and their impor-tance and holds out a welcome note of hope in the discussion of the Everglades.

SC0102Nature PhotographyHow to Take Great Pictures in the Great OutdoorsBy Tim FitzharrisISBN 0-7649-2174-6Nature Photography divulges essential tips for achieving spectacular results in your photography. Each card features a miraculous color photograph of an animal, plant, or landscape; the image exemplifies what can be achieved using the information on the card’s back. SC0103Animal and Bird Tracks

ISBN 978-0-7649-2167-4We humans—the naming animal—enjoy ourselves more when we

know what we’re observing in nature. Animal and Bird Tracks satisfies our hardwired urge to identify: a picture of a bird’s or an animal’s

footprint appears on one side of each card; the other side names the creature and presents its taxonomic data, physical character-

istics, and footprint size, with notes on particularly interesting aspects of its natural history. How do you tell a badger’s track from

a porcupine’s, or a woodpecker’s from a flicker’s? Animal and Bird Tracks reveals the contrasts at a glance, enhancing knowledge,

trailcraft, and the pleasure of being outdoors.

SC0105What’s the Difference Between a

Dolphin and a Porpoise?Subtle Distinctions in Nature

ISBN 978-0-7649-2165-0Being able to distinguish a manatee from a dugong could tell you which continent you are on (if you’re in doubt). Knowing the difference between a porcupine and a hedge-

hog lowers your risk of grievous bodily puncture. Deducing that the wiggly thing under-foot is a king snake and not a coral snake could save the snake’s life. This deck offers

illumination on the characteristics that set one animal, plant, geological feature, or meteorological event apart from its seemingly similar neighbor. It’s a compact

take-along that helps confirm the keen-eyed identifications of the peripatetic naturalist-at-large—and an entertaining reference tool for those who stay at home.

SC0106Where in the World Are You?A Situational Quiz DeckISBN 978-0-7649-2177-3Each card in this deck invites you to determine a location on the basis of a clue—for example, “Suddenly, all is calm after days of rafting on thick, red water through furious rapids in Arizona’s high desert. Where in the World Are You?” The card’s opposite side answers the question and provides notes and observations on such topics as the location’s formation, ecology, and features. The cards cover a variety of subjects, and all yield solid information and dry humor. Seasoned travelers and backcountry tyros alike will be highly entertained on the trip to the trailhead.

SC0107Wilderness Survival Skills

ISBN 978-0-7649-2178-0Everyone who ventures into the wild goes equipped with the knowledge

necessary to prevent or treat the injuries and maladies that can arise there. Don’t they? This deck goes anywhere in a pocket; its contents, in Q&A format, deal with most of the nasties that the outback can inflict.

Each card asks a question on the front—How do you retrieve a lost companion? Treat frostbite, snakebite, heatstroke? What should you do

when encountering a mountain lion?—with a knowledgeable answer on the back. The work of a lifelong outdoorsman and river guide, these authorita-

tive cards are excellent company, at home or on a wilderness trip.

SC0108Animals of the RainforestPhotographs by Art WolfeISBN 0-7649-2575-XArt Wolfe’s dazzling color photographs capture the allure of forty-eight intriguing residents of rainforests from around the world. The back of each card is a synopsis of the animal: common and scientific names, distinguishing marks, geographical distribution, preferred habitat, and points of interest. Among the more unusual animals are the eyelash viper of South America, Horsefield’s tarsier from Sumatra and Borneo, and the adorable red-shanked douc langur from central Vietnam.

Relevant topics are also included, such as whether you should let your car idle at stoplights, how to check for silent water leaks, the value of recycled paper, and gardening without toxic pesticides. The forty-eighth card gives information on how to contact politicians regarding saving the planet.

SC0110Birds

Photographs by Art WolfeISBN 978-0-7649-2844-4

Art Wolfe, a master of photographic techniques, uses a holistic approach to snap his feathered subjects as a part of—and often

hidden within—their environment. From the dramatic action of an eagle in flight to the peacefulness of a grebe floating among lily

pads, this deck is a colorful introduction to the birds of North America, complete with information about the characteristics and

habitat of each bird.

SC0111TreesISBN 978-0-7649-2867-3This deck is a tribute to the elegant and essential tree. Trees are more than raw material; they are the foundation of our national forests and of sustainable urban ecosystems. They are natural filters, absorbing pollut-ants from the air, soil, and storm runoff, and they reduce flooding, erosion of topsoil, and energy consumption. The front of each card has a detailed color illustration of a tree; the back notes the species’ common and scientific names, description, habitat, distribution, and points of interest.

environmentalists and ecowarriors raise their voices in praise of the natural world. The front of each card presents a profound and

memorable quote; the back supplies concise biographical or contextual notes. Among those included are Edward Abbey, Ansel

Durrell, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Dave Foreman, Dian Fossey, Al Gore, Aldo Leopold, Gary Snyder, John Steinbeck, Henry David

SC0113How Many?

A Quiz Deck of Numbers in NatureISBN 978-0-7649-2996-0

This deck explores forty-eight fascinating aspects of life on Earth in an entertaining Q&A format—from the numbers of tree species in the Amazon rainforest, gallons

of crude oil required to make a gallon of gasoline, legs possessed by a millipede, and inches of annual rainfall in the Sahara Desert to the numbers of mammalian

species that lay eggs, times a hummingbird flaps its wings during each second of flight, and years in the life of a bristlecone pine. The intriguing question presented

on the front of each card is answered on the back with a satisfying essay that rounds out the topic in concise, lively, and informative prose.

SC0114WaterAn Environmental Quiz DeckISBN 978-0-7649-3008-9A spot of geology and a drop of geography, a bit of agriculture, a splash of politics, and a good measure of ecology, chemistry, and, of course, hydrology drift to the surface of this absorbing Q&A deck. Water trains a much-needed spotlight on our ongoing global responsibility toward—and woeful neglect of—our most important natural resource, but the news is far from all bad, as these cards make clear. The front of each card asks a question regarding the world’s water; the back answers the question and provides background information to complete the picture.

SC0115Air

An Environmental Quiz DeckISBN 0-7649-3009-5

Air is good: it’s all that stands between us and outer space. These Q&A cards explore our atmosphere with wide-ranging inquiries and casually erudite answers. Where is the planet’s cleanest and dirtiest air found?

Why do divers get the bends? Do volcanoes warm the atmosphere or cool it? What really made the Hindenburg explode? Is it possible to breathe a

liquid? What are the cleanest and dirtiest vehicle engines? Can you name the atmosphere’s layers? How much air do we breathe in a day? With a

question on the front and the answer on the back, other cards address global warming, the Kyoto Protocol, CFCs and the ozone layer, and cow digestion.

SC0116Granite GourmetTrail-Tested Recipes for Backpacking AdventuresISBN 978-0-7649-3335-6As hungry as one becomes while walking the backcountry, few people recall the food as a high point of their journeying. Constraints of weight and bulk, and fatigue at day’s end, make food fuel and nothing more. It doesn’t have to be that way: Granite Gourmet will show you how to pack light and eat right. The author, a deeply experienced backpacking cook, shares her discoveries of fast, delicious, high-energy traveling meals and the tricks to transporting and preparing them. Her evident ability to draw complex, sophisticated flavors from a minimalist’s ingredient list will inspire home cooks as well as wanderers. A little time spent with the recipes and insights of this deck’s forty-eight cards will have your traveling companions wondering how they didn’t starve before you came along.

In asking what can happen in twenty-four hours, these cards address matters small (how far can a snail travel?) and large (how far does light travel?), awesome (how much precipitation falls to Earth?) and outrageous (how much time do we spend in our cars?). As a multiplayer quiz game or a satisfying, solitary read, In a Day will delight and inform. A Quiz Deck on Green Gardening EssentialsISBN 978-0-7649-3372-1

for it. But how to get one started, and how to keep it flourishing? This deck of cards presents, in engaging Q&A format, the insights, botanical and biological

knowledge, and tricks of the trade that come with long experience in organic gardening. Whether you envision a backyard sanctuary or a quarter-acre of

potatoes, you’ll find The Earth-Friendly Garden useful. With tips on soil enhance-ment, water conservation, and pest prevention (and the garden fauna you want

to attract), these cards will entertain and inform both newcomers and experienced gardeners. The Earth-Friendly Garden works equally well as

greener, more sustainable lifestyle. Topics focus on the “4 Rs of Living Lightly”: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Reconsider your actions. How much

of your household energy goes to heat water? How far did the food in your dinner travel to get to your plate? How do you plan a “green” wedding? The

EcoQuiz Deck answers these questions and dozens more in a format that works equally well as a multiplayer game or a satisfying solitary read.

SC0121What in the World Am I?

An Endangered Species Quiz DeckISBN 978-0-7649-4150-4

My tongue is as big as an elephant, but my food of choice is smaller than a paper clip—what in the world am I? As to my armored green neighbor, who spends her days eating nothing but algae and grasses, she ends up too often in an expensive soup—can you guess what she is? Even creatures as big as blue whales and giant

sea turtles can disappear from Earth if human beings shirk their duty to protect the planet. Mollusks, mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, and one spider are spotlighted on

these forty-eight cards: their identities are hinted at on the front of the card, and their natural history and survival tale are told on the back.

SC0122What Do You Know About Oceans?A Quiz DeckISBN 978-0-7649-4470-3No sooner have we solved one of the great mysteries posed by Earth’s oceans than another flummoxes us. We have come to understand the actions of tides, the sources of tsunamis, and—thanks to Ben Franklin—the trajectory of the Gulf Stream, but we still have much to learn about vent creatures, the Bermuda Triangle, and how global warming is changing salinity, currents, and animals’ migratory patterns. This well-researched deck of forty-eight cards will set you on the cutting edge of oceanographic knowledge, equipping you to quiz friends and yourself on everything from icebergs to sunken treasure.

SC0123Howling at the Moon

A Quiz Deck on Animal CommunicationISBN 978-0-7649-4451-2

Sure, you know that honeybees dance to guide nest mates to nectar, and chickadees call in cohorts to pester a predator. But have you ever wondered

why horses grimace, how a tiny insect can make itself heard in the din of a rainforest, or what your dog reveals about you when he wags to the right? The forty-eight cards in this deck explore the mysteries of how nonhuman

beings—from single-celled organisms to dolphins, anteaters, and apes—express themselves. The front of each card asks an intriguing question about creature communication; the back provides a witty, well-researched answer.

Entertaining, erudite, and illuminating, Howling at the Moon sheds new light on the amazing conversations going on all around us.

SC0124Planet Earth Quiz DeckAmazing Facts from the Cosmic to the TerrestrialISBN 978-0-7649-4574-8Most of us have whiled away each and every one of our waking hours upon the planet we call Earth, so we should be experts regarding our big blue marble—right? We’re all aware that Earth is a spinning orb, but how many of us can name a human endeavor that has affected the rate of rotation? Or state—without a worried glance overhead—the number of house-sized outer-space snowballs that burn to steam daily in Earth’s atmosphere? The forty-eight cards in this deck pose such educational and entertaining questions on their fronts and provide well-researched answers on their backs. Equally enjoyable as a solo study or a quiz game with family and friends, the Planet Earth Quiz Deck covers everything from gravel to gravity regarding the revolving orb we all call home.

SC0125Talking TrashEverything You Need to Know About Garbage, from Rot to Recycling: A Quiz DeckISBN 978-0-7649-4609-7Trash: archaeologists dig it; cities build on it; recyclers buy and sell it. Waste has become big business, and, like all commodities, it can be parsed mighty fine. Curbside novices may know a green-bin item from irredeemable dross, but the cognoscenti distinguish between garbage, trash, refuse, junk, and rubbish. This deck of forty-eight cards dissects those distinctions, probes the history of waste from the Stone Age to the space age, tracks the movement of garbage across state lines, and exposes the long-suppressed truth about diapers and landfill. Whether you quiz yourself or orga-nize a quiz game for family and friends, Talking Trash covers the universe of castoffs.

SC0126Wilderness Heroes

Extraordinary People Who Have Saved America’s Wild Places: A Quiz Deck

ISBN 978-0-7649-4698-1Approaching its subjects in fresh, quirky, and surprising ways, Wilderness Heroes explores the devotion and tenacity of decision makers and trailblazers who have

made wilderness conservation their lifework. The accomplishments of John Muir, Aldo Leopold, and David Brower are celebrated in this deck of forty-eight Q&A

cards, but the wilderness preservation movement includes countless others less known. You’ll learn who drafted the Wilderness Act, which US president protected

the most wilderness, who forged the Appalachian Trail, and much more. (A few antiheroes appear here as well.) Whether shared around the campfire or savored in

solitude, this lively, informative deck will enlighten, amuse, and inspire.

SC0127Why We Need Bees, Beetles, Urchins, and WormsA Quiz Deck on Beneficial InvertebratesISBN 978-0-7649-5076-6Most of us think about the smallest denizens of the planet—the invertebrates—only when our houses are invaded by ants, or a bee buzzes by, or we discover a crab in a tide pool. But these organisms play integral roles in the biosphere we call home. Do you know which crustacean protects our salt marshes? Which beetle it is that cattle ranchers rely on? Noted zoologist and author Frank Indiviglio knows a lot about the world’s smallest inhabitants and brings his expertise to bear in the forty-eight cards of this jam-packed quiz deck.

SC0128Helping Animals

Things You Can Do to Support and Protect Wild and Domestic Critters: A Quiz Deck

butterfly oasis—these forty-eight cards offer a wealth of critter-care tips, plus advice on how to become a professional wildlife rehabilitator,

participate in important research, and influence conservation policy. Each card’s front poses a practical question related to aiding our fellow creatures; the answer, by animal-expert Frank Indiviglio, is on the back. Indiviglio was a

zoologist at the Bronx Zoo for two decades and has worked as an animal-welfare advocate. His extensive experience makes Helping Animals an

indispensable resource for all friends of pets and wildlife.

SC0129Endangered Places: A Quiz Deck

By Matthew S. TharpISBN 978-0-7649-5387-3

Our planet is forever changing. An age of ice is succeeded by drought—and then another ice age. Sporadic mass extinctions seem to threaten life itself. At the

dawn of the twenty-first century, the forces of change seem to have conspired: deserts are spreading, cities and farms are gobbling up open spaces, seas are

rising. To cope with an increasing number of endangered places, local and inter-national efforts have included evacuating low-lying islands, diverting water flows,

and encouraging ecotourism. This deck of forty-eight quiz cards surveys the globe, from the Great Barrier Reef to the Amish farmlands of Pennsylvania,

testing your knowledge and teaching you all about Earth’s threatened regions.

SC0130How Long on Earth? A Quiz DeckLife Spans of Animals, Humans, Insects, Plants, and MicroorganismsISBN 978-0-7649-5456-6A stroke of bad karma might make you a cockroach, but the news wouldn’t be all bad: you’d only have to scuttle for sixteen months. Humans are among the longest-lived animals; cockroaches don’t live nearly so long as tarantulas or scorpions. If your karma went the other way, you might inhabit the body of a whale: the bowhead can live more than two hundred years, a generous span if you enjoy plankton. This deck of forty-eight quiz cards conveys far more than the life spans of the great and the small, shedding light on why some creatures live longer than others, how stem cells might be used to extend human life, and whether butterflies live longer in cages or meadows.
