A WORLD War II Memo-rial Stone, which was recently installed in Ferryhill Town Hall Gar-dens, was blessed by Rev. Christopher Humble of Ferryhill Methodist Church on Tuesday 28th January.
The plaque was
installed in November 2019 to commemorate Armed Forces personnel, who paid the ultimate sacrifice during World War II, and is situated next to the fallen soldier Cenotaph.
Councillor Joe Make-peace contributed £3,040
from his Neighbourhood Budget Monies via the 4Together Partnership to manufacture and install the plaque.
Before the stone was laid, the names of 89 servicmen named on the stone could only be seen within a book, which
was displayed in Ferryhill Library.
Town Mayor, Councillor Joe Makepeace said: ‘I am thrilled to have been able to support this pro-ject. It is important to remember the great sacrifice that our fallen heroes have made.”

are very excited about the Commemoration Book.
“The idea is to capture a little bit of social history, so the Ambassadors from all the schools in Ferryhill are asking for everyone to do some family research.
“We would like people to record the names and details of people from their family who lived dur-ing the Second World War.
“These can be people who fought during the war or people from the home front. Everyone is welcome to write in and
contribute to the book.“The book is now at
Dean Bank Primary School and members of the community as well as pupils are invited to go along to the school to add their family’s details.
“We intend to pass it to schools, churches and other community groups over the coming months so everyone will have the chance to contribute.
“The book will then be given to the Ferry-hill branch of the British Legion for safe keeping.”
THIS WEEK Dean Bank Primary Ambassadors for Community Change launched Ferryhill’s 75th Anniversary VE Day Com-memoration Book.
Ferryhill’s Ambassadors are asking all residents to find out and write about their family members in the book, whatever their role during the Second World War.
Glenys Newby from Approach Too, who pro-vided the book and who is supporting the Ambassa-dors, said: “The children

Police responded to several calls in the area and one intoxicated youth was removed to the Police Station for their
own safety, from where their parents were asked to collect them.
Numerous other youths also received visits from officers.
“Anti-Social Behaviour will not be tolerated in Ferryhill and will be acted upon,” said a spokesper-son for Ferryhill Police.

TEN COUNTY Durham schools were set the chal-lenging task of pitching out-of-this-world busi-ness ideas in a foreign language, as part of a special space themed learning day.
Working alongside astrophysicists from Dur-ham University, the Year 10 pupils learned about zero gravity orbits and were tasked with both building a prototype of an international space hotel and then pitching for funds from French and Spanish speaking inves-tors.
Participating schools included: Dene Acad-emy, Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College, Hummersknott School, Seaham High, Sedgefield Community College, St Bede’s Catholic Compre-hensive and Byron Sixth Form College, St John’s Catholic Comprehensive School and Sixth Form, Tanfield School, Teesdale
School and Sixth Form and Woodham Academy.
Pupils were invited to work in teams, developing ideas based on scientific knowledge and inspired by the day’s keynote speaker, Dr Azadeh Fat-tahi, a member of Durham University’s Institute for Computational Cosmol-ogy.
Durham County Coun-cil’s international rela-tions team and Business Durham organised the day to demonstrate how a knowledge of languages and science are used in the world of work. The day was led by Business Lan-guage Champions with support from Durham University.
Cllr Carl Marshall, Cabi-net member for economic regeneration, said “This event has been a fantas-tic chance for the young people to practise their language skills in a fun and engaging way.
“It’s also demonstrated
the important role lan-guages can play in real life business situations and the future career opportunities that they could open up for young people.”
Dr Azadeh Fattahi, from Durham University’s Insti-tute for Computational Cosmology, said: “Right across our Science Out-reach programme here at Durham University, our aim is to stimulate inter-est in science and help people understand how it applies to our everyday lives and what exciting careers are available in science.
“The young people at the Space Challenge event had some great ideas and great enthusi-asm. Who knows, maybe some of them will be the scientists and innovators of tomorrow?”

‘North-Shoring’, I com-pletely approve of this – it’s about taking jobs from London and the south east and returning them to the north of England – and I think County Durham’s a wonderful place to come. There are wonder-ful people here, a highly skilled workforce and a very commercial and for-ward-looking authority to work with.”
Mr Berry also empha-sised the need for govern-ment to work with local authorities and praised Durham County Council’s commitment to encourag-ing and supporting invest-ment in the county.
“I wanted to come to County Durham…to see the extraordinary part-nership that is delivering that growing Durham economy and, of course, this isn’t the government doing it on our own,” he added. “We are working in close partnership with the local authority and your members of parlia-ment to make sure as we deliver that Northern Pow-erhouse it becomes about high value, secure jobs for everyone who lives in this
great county.“We already have, I
hope, a really good rela-tionship with the figures from the council and it’s really, really refreshing to meet with them again here in County Durham and hear the ambitious plans they have in their 2050 vision. Elections only come round every few years and, in between elections, it’s so refresh-ing to have an approach by all that says ‘let’s take the rosettes off, let’s do everything we can in our power, let’s work tirelessly for the people of county Durham to deliver on that plan because actually it’s about the people’.”
Speaking about the minister’s visit, Cllr Henig said: “It’s been really pos-itive to welcome the min-ister to County Durham. I think he recognises just how important what we have here is for the econ-omy, not just in County Durham but across the whole of the north, and that’s very positive as we move forward with our agenda to bring more jobs and an economic advance to County Durham.”
A LEADING government minister has called on global businesses to con-sider investing in County Durham.
Jake Berry, Northern Powerhouse minister, praised the “passion and drive” of the area’s “high-ly-skilled workforce” and described the county as a “good place to invest” dur-ing a visit to the area.
Mr Berry took a tour of family firm Thomas Swan in Consett and the Centre for Process Innovation at the North East Technol-ogy Park (NETPark) in Sedgefield. He also met Cllr Simon Henig, Leader of Durham County Coun-cil, and other leading fig-ures from the authority.
“If you’re a business any-where in the world, or even in the UK, I think this is a really good place to invest – and it’s not just about the sort of plans that the council comes up with, I think the people who live here have a real warmth and an absolute passion and drive that will serve every business extremely well,” Mr Berry said during his visit to NETPark.
