• WeareintheprocessofrevisingtheBylawssotheyarecompliantwithanewlawpassedin2014titledtheNYSNonprofitRevitalizationAct.
• Inhopesofattractingmorealumnitoparticipate,theProgramCommitteeisplanningasummersocialeventfortheJulyGeneralMembershipmeeting,sokeepyoureyesopenforanupcomingnotice.
• ItwaswithsadnessthattheBoardofDirectorsdecidedtoretiretheannualSilverTea.Althoughalong-standingtraditionoftheAlumni,itsattendancehadbeenwaningforseveralyearsthereforemakingitdifficulttomaintain.

• TheAlumniAssociationcontinuestosupporttheMemorialSchoolofNursingwithfinancialsupportforlearningtoolsandresourcesandwithprovidingstudentswithsnacksandrefreshmentsduringorientationandexamtimes.Inaddition,theAlumniPresidentandVicePresidentstillattendgraduationsandpresentthegraduatingseniorswithabouquetofredrosesandtwomonetaryawards.
Whilemanyofyouareimmersedintheeverydayworkofhealthcare,IthoughtIwouldalsotakethisopportunitytoenlightenthosewhomaybeenjoyingaquietertimeinyourlifeaboutsomeimportantaccomplishmentsandmilestonesourprofessionencounteredduringthepastyear.

Therehasbeensomesprucingupinthehallwayswithpicturesandbiosofthefacultyandstaff,andinformationaboutcourses.Thestudentshaveexpressedappreciationforalltherecentchanges.Alsoupinthemainhallwayisasignatureboardforalumni.Soifyouareinthearea,pleasestopbyandsignthesignatureboard.Pleaseincludeyouryearofgraduation.

From the Desk of the School’s DirectorWehavestartedourspringsemesterwith28students.Atotalof25studentsgraduatedinDecember.Weexpecttohaveanother33graduatinginMay.NCLEXfirsttimepastratefor2014was98%.WehadaRegent’sreaccreditationsitevisitinSeptemberandareawaitingtheresults.AFebruaryaccreditationvisitwascompletedwiththeAccreditationCommissionforEducationinNursing.
TheNursingIVfacultyareanxioustobeginusingthepediatricmanikinthatyouhavesogenerouslyprovided.Thelibraryunderwentsomerenovationsoverthesummer.Therearenowtwosmallroomsfortestingorquietstudy.

Dianne Haxton Hurley ’71After33yearswithonecompany,AscensionHealth-Iwaslaidoff.IhadbeenworkingasadirectoroftheirLongTermCareFacility.Idecidedtotakeanearlyretirement,andamnowworkingparttimeatourlocalcommunitycollegetraininghighschooljuniorsandseniorsintheirCNAprogram.
Rebecca Sweeney Morrissey ’99Recentlybecametrainedtocareforpostopcardiothoracicpatients.CurrentlystudyingforCCRN.
Kathleen Barbour Roy ’67 (Contributed 8/14)IgraduatedfromMemorialin1967.InNov.2012,afterover45yearsinnursingI“hungupmycap”andretired.Itwasadifficultdecision.Ilovedmyjob,thepeopleIworkedwithandmostofallmypatients.MymothertoldmeIwouldnotbehappy.“Allyoueverdidwasnursing.”Nottotallytrue,sinceIdidraisetwosonsasasinglemom.ButIamhappytoreportthatIprovedmymotherwrong.Ilovebeingretired!Inthepastyear,Ihavebeenvolunteeringatafarmthatmychurchhas.Weplantandharvestvegetablesforourfoodbank.IalsovolunteerweeklywithourlocalHospiceHouse.LastSeptember,IwasacampgroundhostatastateparknearmyhomeinBellingham,WA.Iwillbehostingagainthisspringfortwomonths.InAugustIplantodoaroadtripacrossthecountrytovisitmanyofournation’swonderfulparkswhiletravelingtoMichiganandtheGreatLakes.OnceayearonLaborDaythereisawalkacrosstheMackinacBridge.Atfivemileslong,thisbridgeisthefifthlongestsuspensionbridgeintheworld.Iplantowalkalongwiththousandsofotherwalkers.Iliveinthesametownasmyoldestsonandhavea6yearoldgrandsonandanothernewgrandsonborninMarch2014.Ihadalongandwonderfulcareerasanurse.Inowhavetheopportunitytotrymyhandatmanynewadventures.Iconsidermyselftrulyblessed.

Kathleen Snearly Mahr ’72I'veneededtouseourlymphedemaclinicandwoundcareclinicthisyear.Bothareexceptional.It'sveryexcitingtoseetheimprovementsandchanges.Ourhospitalneedsamajorfacelift.Allthegoodthingsthatarebeingdone,theexcellentnursingcaregivenonthefloors,theexceptionalERwehavethatgetspeopleseenandcaredforinaverytimelywayandthorough.Youfeelyourproblemsarebeingaddressed.Fromthemomentyouenterthehospitaleveryoneisfriendlyandtheretohelpyouandmakeyoufeelathomeandcomfortable.Youfeelthisisamajorpriorityfromadministrationdownanditmakesourhospitaluniqueandspecial.Weneedoursmallcommunityhospitalsnowmorethaneverwithouragingpopulation.
