Memorial Day and a little Flag art Memorial Day is meant to honor people that have died while serving their country. The day has come to be associated with certain activities as well; parades filled with patriotic banners and songs, the start of summer, barbecue dinners with watermelon and corn on the cob, and blowout sales. We thought that students might enjoy creating some patriotic art in honor of Memorial Day. A new flag has always been issued on first 4th of July after a new state has been admitted into the Union of the United States of America. Our last flag was created when a new star was added in 1960 to represent Hawaii entering the union. There are prescribed dimensions for true productions of the American flag. They are shown below. Notice that the cross-wise, horizontal dimension of the American flag is called its "fly" dimension. The vertical dimension of the flag is called its "hoist". Today we are going to use artistic license to create our own flag or patriotic designs. (Artistic license is a term used to mean that we have distorted the prescribed dimensions or design of our artwork.) Fly of entire flag = 1.9 unit Fly of union = 0.76 unit Hoist of entire flag = 1 units Hoist of union = ! !" units
