It has been quite an exciting year

for the bC electrical association.

i am often asked how i stayed

inspired after all of these years

with the bCea. the answer to

that question is very simple; i love

my job, and the members and many

volunteers i have had the pleasure

of working with. years such as this

are what keep me energized and

motivated to better the electrical

industry.

in 2015, the board put together an

excellent two-year plan that re-

engaged members and volunteers.

the key components of this plan being

education, philanthropy, member

engagement, and self-marketing.

for this next year, the board has

developed a strategy to bring our Link

(Leadership, integrity, networking, and

knowledge) vision to life.

Leadership — the bCea board has

evolved over the years into a diverse

and hardworking group. they are

engaged and believe in the work the

bCea does. the board plans for the

bCea to lead the next generation

through the work of the u40 group

and the advocacy committee.

Integrity – We want our members to

be proud of what the bCea stands

for. our strategic plan has allowed

us to continue to be the strong

association that we have been for

the past 91 years. We have created a

strong foundation of programs and

have partnered with many industry

associations such as the bC safety

authority, electro federation of

Canada, asttbC, apegbC, MCabC,

Csa, and eJ2. Working alongside

these strong organizations have

allowed us to communicate a unified

message of both safety and standards.

Networking — With the help of our

u40 group, Women’s network and

social Committee, the bCea has

been able to bring our members

many networking opportunities this

year. our committees have done an

excellent job creating moments that

have benefited our members and their

businesses. We have received high

feedback on our social and charitable

events this year, and look forward to

continuing with this success.

Knowledge — over the last year,

we have surveyed, interviewed, and

met with our member groups to

create a gap analysis on education

in the market place. the education

Committee, along with our new

Conference Committee, are working

hard to fill those gaps not only for our

members but within our industry as

a whole. While the bCea does take

pride in the educational programs

we currently provide, we are looking

to additionally guide our members

into educational routes that suit their

needs.

committees, and mostly my staff,

Caitlyn and nazan, for all of their

support and hard work over the

last year! n

As a 30-year veteran of the electrical industry, i have had the privilege

to meet and get to know most of the members of the british Columbia

electrical association. i have been a member of the bCea and have

served on the board for over 10 years.

as a business owner and manufacturer, i know what it takes to be successful. i

want to see this organization grow and be assured of sustainability as i have to

acknowledge that we do live in unsettling times. We need to sow seeds for the future.

the bCea was founded in the 1920’s and is the leading association representing the

interests of the electrical industry in the province of british Columbia.

our mandate is to build community through education and advocacy (as we are

known as the bCea) and our strategic plan reflects this commitment.

What are key components of our strategic plan?

1. Education - We have a series of online educational

programs that address diverse areas of the industry.

2. Advocacy - We want to be the voice of the electrical industry and

address issues and concerns.

3. Sustainability - grow the membership focusing on membership value

and have a clear value proposition. Look for opportunities and creative

ways to reach out to the industry.

4. Partnerships - build strong relationships with other complimentary

organizations.

5. Career awareness - inspire the youth of today to focus on the electrical

industry as a career opportunity.

the commitment of our membership is critical for the future of the organization. if

you are passionate about the industry, it is critical that you give back to the industry.

there is no better way to do this than to become an active member of the board or

one of our many committees. this is your organization.

i must acknowledge my great appreciation for the staff at the bCea and a special

thank you to barbette ishii for her 20 plus years of outstanding contributions to the

For all of us within the bCea, 2016 has turned out to be an

incredibly productive year!

Last year, our goal was to create more awareness surrounding the

benefits of membership during our events; to impart these benefits

and continue to work towards benefits from our preferred suppliers

program. With this in mind, we now offer an individual membership option as an

added component to our membership possibilities.

another addition we have made to member value is our new online training

courses. With over 500 courses available, the opportunities are endless. if you

have not yet checked out the website, we encourage you to do so today.

the u40 committee has been very active this year and is increasing the amount

of members at each of their events. great job! building on the success of this

committee, bCea now has the Women’s network group that is growing in

popularity as well.

the bCea is community focused, and we are proud to have raised $10,000

for the easter seals earlier this year. our 25th annual golf tournament was a

success and all proceeds help fund bursaries and scholarships, as they do each

year. We have raised over $17,000 in 2016, and over $400,000 since we started.

our team will be meeting on a regular basis and we would love to receive

feedback from you, our members, so we can continue to improve and deliver

value to all facets of the industry. stay connected and get involved! n

One of the new

buzzwords to

hit the electrical

industry is the

Internet of

Things. The IoT

encompasses

devices with internet

connectivity for remote

monitoring, control, and other

functions. Some of these

devices include thermostats,

light bulbs, lighting controls,

door locks, etc. Where

heating, lighting, and access

control were historically in

the commercial and industrial

sectors, technology advances

have allowed these to move

to the lower-cost residential

sector as well. These functions

can now be controlled

from anywhere

in the world – by

the operator or by

someone who hacked

the device or network.

The Internet of Things made an

appearance at the defCon hacking

conference with the IoT village. This

was an area of the show hosting

hacking demonstrations including

a samsung smart Fridge. While the

show serves to find security risks

and help companies fix security

holes, the ease with which talented

hackers can penetrate these devices

shows that security will become an

increasing concern.

terrorist attacks as PLC’s and sCAdA

systems are used for control in large

industrial facilities. In 2011, of 198

reported attacks, 41% of these were

on water-related facilities.

system in the ukraine. This attack

involved bypassing the uPs’s in the

control rooms, manually opening

mv distribution breakers, and

uploading custom firmware to the

serial-ethernet converters so that the

breakers had to be manually closed.

While the security at the generating

stations was likely high enough, the

ability to hack the substation level

had the same effect of terrorism to

those consuming the power.

As a result of connected devices,

security is no longer a concern solely

for the IT department. Cisco lists the

risks as computer worms infecting

connected devices because of an

embedded version of a common

operating system, bored individuals

hacking into residential systems for

fun (webcams, baby monitors, etc.),

to organized crime and terrorism.

In order to be protected against

intrusions, facility managers to home

owners need an understanding of

security principles. These can range

from proper implementation and

knowledge of firewalls, to making

the choice to keep some devices

separate from computers that have

access to the internet. An easy first

step is changing default passwords.
