WELCOME TO MOSAIC HARMONY!

OUR HISTORY

In 1993, two churches, one European-American and one African-American, felt a desire to bring together many people from different cultures, religions, ages, and backgrounds. African- American spiritual music was chosen to act as a vehicle for such a vision, as its rich tradition has emerged from ordinary lives and speaks to the celebration of a joyful spirit that overcomes all obstacles.

We have grown to embody more than 21 faith traditions, stretching in age over 7 decades. We welcome anyone who loves to sing inspirational music with a community choir that embraces multiple cultural backgrounds. Our choir, now more than 60 voices strong, has sung from the stages of the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, at the Pentagon, and to large and small audiences in a multitude of settings. We have also served homeless communities, interacted with children at a residential treatment facility, and with patients at a mental health clinic. The breadth and depth of these experiences are equally poignant and meaningful to the choir, for our underlying message is always to honor unity through the rich diversity of the human condition.

In March 2003, Mosaic Harmony extended its message internationally with a Goodwill Concert Tour to Germany and Slovenia. Our Tenth Anniversary Season culminated with a gala concert at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center, on the Northern Virginia Community College Alexandria Campus. In 2016 we held the first of our annual Mosaic Harmony and Friends: One Humankind in Music concerts in celebration of the United Nations World Interfaith Harmony Week. In 2017 Mosaic Harmony participated in the Festival of Peace and Brotherhood in Rome, Italy.

During the Clinton Administration, Mosaic Harmony was selected by the President’s Initiative on Race as a model program that encourages participation of people from different racial backgrounds. Mosaic Harmony was included on the White House website as a “Promising Practice” that highlights efforts to improve race relations and build one America. In 1997, Mosaic Harmony was chosen by the Fairfax County Human Rights Commission to receive its prestigious Human Rights Award.

Because the core of our vision heightens the awareness of oneness, we are frequently invited to participate in programs that result in expanded community building and social change. The impact of our commitment has reached national and international proportions. From supporting efforts to construct houses for the Lakota Nation to efforts to build churches in the Dominican Republic; and from celebrating the 135th anniversary of a Maryland church built by freed slaves to creating a personal bond with people of Germany and Slovenia during a time of war, we continue to demonstrate and evoke our message of harmony.

THE PRESENT

Mosaic Harmony continues to sing inspirational music, much in the African-American gospel tradition. Committed to the belief that inspirational music can create a community of interfaith and racial harmony, the choir members represent several different races, numerous faith traditions, and a variety of occupations. We are joined together by the ministry of music and by beliefs that unite us as a choir, which energize us to share our message and connect to others. Together, we celebrate a commitment to creative expression, musical excellence, commitment to service and shared joy and support. We are a unique choir in that no auditions or ability to read music are required. Mosaic Harmony’s concerts are high-energy, inspiring performances that leave audiences feeling uplifted and encouraged. Music performed by the choir includes traditional and contemporary gospel music and new music written by Reverend North. Mosaic Harmony draws on the rich heritage of African-American inspirational music to demonstrate and encourage unity in the midst of diversity. The choir brings together people of diverse cultures, ages, backgrounds, and multiple faith traditions to celebrate unity and humanity. Our mission is to unify the world, one song at a time – join us

At the end of each rehearsal and concert, we close by joining hands with all those present and singing our theme song, “Make us one Lord, make us one. Let Your love flow so the world will know, we are one in You.”

MUSICAL DIRECTION AND INSTRUMENTALISTS

Rev. David North, Director

David has been sharing his ministry in Word and Song his entire life. As Director and solo vocalist for Mosaic Harmony since 1996, he infuses the choir and its audiences with electric energy and excitement at every performance. David has been the director of many musical groups, including the Southern Illinois University Gospel Choir, the Youth for Christ Fellowship Mass Choir of Washington, DC, the Metropolitan Community Church of Washington Gospel Choir, and David North and the Gospel Celebration. He has produced, recorded, and performed on multiple recordings, and has been a soloist with the Men and Women of the Gospel at the Kennedy Center, Washington, DC. In June 2003, David played the lead role of Oedipus in the “Gospel at Colonus” at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop and at the H Street Playhouse of Washington, DC. Reverend North is an ordained minister with the Baptist Church and with the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches.

Darren McFate, Assistant Director

Darren has over 25 years’ experience as a professional musician, performer, educator, composer, arranger, conductor and church musician. An accomplished pianist, violinist and vocalist, Darren holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Duquesne University. He has travelled and performed throughout the United States, Europe, South American and Africa. He has directed Middle School, High School, College, and Professional orchestras, bands, and

choirs in New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Maryland. Darren currently teaches instrumental music in Howard County, Maryland.

Christian Davis, Keyboard Accompanist

Christian has been a musician for more than 25 years, professional for 23 years. She is a graduate of Northern Virginia Community College, where she received her degree in music with a focus in Jazz. In addition to being a multi-instrumentalist, Christian is also a songwriter and has produced songs for various Indie artists in DC, Maryland and Virginia as well as for Mosaic Harmony. Christian has performed with Minister Isaac Howard, Dr. Michael Reid, Sr., Kendall King, Alice Hawkins and the HawKings Productions Workshop Choir, the late Timothy Wright, and the Greater Mount Calvary Holiness Church of America's International District Choir. In 2006, Christian, along with her friends and family, founded a singing ensemble, Chosen Royalty (Deuteronomy 7:7-8) which has written, arranged and produced three CDs. Christian serves as a teacher for Fairfax county Public Schools and as a musician for area churches.

Ron Skinner, Bass Guitarist

Ron has been the bass guitarist for Mosaic Harmony since 1994. Ron began playing with the choir because he likes its mission and because he loves gospel music. Ron has been playing bass guitar for more than 20 years, with a focus on contemporary gospel music, although he also enjoys playing traditional gospel as well. He has been involved in several other music projects and has performed throughout the Washington metropolitan area at various venues, including the John F. Kennedy center for the Performing Arts’ Millennium Stage. In addition to working with Mosaic Harmony, Ron is a freelance bass guitarist/guitarist and the bassist for the BAC OUT Band in Herndon, Virginia.

Allen Caesar, Percussionist

Allen has provided the rhythm that is the heartbeat of Mosaic Harmony’s music since 1997. Allen began playing musical instruments in the early sixties, starting with the piano, moving to the organ and eventually becoming interested in the drums. This interest in the drums let him to play in the Drum Corp Jr. High School Band and with local rock bands. In the eighties, Allen started a new musical venture when he began playing with Stan Ford and The Chosen. This led to the religious community approaching him to play for their choirs. At the same time, Allen started incorporating sound control and electronic drums to his music, which has considerably enhanced his musical style and abilities. These many years of experience have given Allen the opportunity to play in many settings on the East coast and in Europe

MOSAIC HARMONY ON THE INTERNET

Mosaic Harmony Website

The Mosaic Harmony website URL is www.mosaicharmony.org. You should be familiar with the public pages – they contain information that is useful to choir members and to their friends and family.

The Members-only homepage is password-protected. You can get the username and password from your section leader or by writing to [email protected]. The pages in the Members-only section change frequently, so check them often. There are five member functions: Members’ Calendar, Member Directory, the Bulletin Board, Learn the Songs, and Pay Member Dues/Donate.

Members’ Calendar The Members’ Calendar is similar to the public Events page, but it contains additional details, such as choir arrival times, parking instructions, where to gather before the performance starts, and performance song list. The Members’ Schedule also provides information about rehearsals and organizational meetings.

Member Directory The Member Directory provides a full listing of our members – who they are, how to contact them, what they do in their life outside Mosaic Harmony, and what they like to do with their spare time. Shortly after your dues are paid, your own listing will be added. Ask your section leader about having your photo taken. You can update your listing as often as you like by emailing [email protected].

The Member Directory is a handy reference – it’s useful to bookmark it on your cellphone or print out a hardcopy. It’s helpful to have it accessible at rehearsals so you can begin to associate faces with names. You can sort the Member Directory alphabetically by members’ last names, by zip code (to see who lives near your for carpooling), or by section (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass). You can also display a list of people who have particular functions in MoHa, such as officers or musician accompanists.

Bulletin Board On the Members’ Bulletin Board, you’ll find Notices, General information, MoHa Board of Directors Documents (for example minutes of meetings), and an Archive. You never really know what you’ll find on the Members’ Bulletin Board. Check it often!

Learn the Songs You can listen to instructional audios prepared by the choir directors, recordings from rehearsals and MoHa performances, as well as links to the songs as performed by other singers. Lyric sheets are available there as well. Go there often! It is very important, particularly if you missed a rehearsal or want to learn/polish your part.

Pay Member Dues/Donate From this page, you can pay annual membership dues or make donations by credit card. Secure processing is provided by PayPal.

Mosaic Harmony on Social Media

A website is like the menu in a restaurant: it’s important that it be nice-looking and useful to the customers in the restaurant, but it doesn’t do anything to bring customers into the

restaurant. For that, you need promotion. The best promoters of Mosaic Harmony are its members, and the cheapest, most effective tool for them to use is social media. Search engines (such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, Safari) estimate how interesting to users an organization is likely to be based on how much activity on social media refers to that organization. Three popular social media are Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

Facebook If you are on Facebook, you can help promote Mosaic Harmony by “Liking” and “Following” the Mosaic Harmony PAGE (https://www.facebook.com/mosaicharmony/). Facebook pages are open to anyone with a Facebook account. Anyone can “Like” our page and then be able to react to and comment on posts. They can also make posts with approval of one of the administrators (MoHa webmasters and promotion chairperson). If a Facebook user also “Follows” the page, the user will be notified when someone posts something on the Mosaic Harmony page. The Mosaic Harmony Facebook page is entertaining, informative, and useful for publicizing Mosaic Harmony events.

The Mosaic Harmony Choir Members Facebook GROUP (https://www.facebook.com/groups/932594833488845/) is a “Closed” group, restricted to Mosaic Harmony members and former members. You must ask to join, and your request must be approved by one of the administrators (MoHa webmasters and membership chairperson). Once you’re an approved member, you can post, comment on posts, and share things of particular interest to choir members. Since it’s a closed group, it’s more private than the Mosaic Harmony page, and you will not be able to share items you find there with the general public.

COMMUNICATION

Mosaic Harmony is increasingly using electronic media to provide information to members and to help members communicate with each other and the choir leadership. Our web page and social media accounts are important parts of this communication approach, but they are primarily one way, providing information from choir leadership to the members. We also encourage members to communicate back to our leaders and with each other.

Sign-up Genius Mosaic relies on all members to be able to present and participate in all kinds of events. These include concerts as well as fund-raising and volunteer events such as yard sales and social

gatherings. To facilitate these, we use Sign-up Genius to collect attendance numbers and solicit volunteers. Links to Sign-up Genius will be sent out in choir notes and placed on the web site and member’s Facebook page. Please look for these and respond.

E-Mail We send out regular e-mail to our members and supporters. After each rehearsal look for the Choir Notes e-mail. This import mail contains a summary of songs rehearsed, upcoming events, links to Sign-up Genius and Ticket web sites and other useful information. You will also receive our public newsletter sent to all of our supporters.

If you have questions about the choir, we encourage you to send e-mail to your section leader or any of the other choir leadership. Their e-mail addresses can be found in appendices III and IV. You can also contact the entire choir or just your section using the addresses below.

REHEARSAL ATTENDANCE

It is strongly encouraged that you attend every rehearsal. It is the time to hear, record, and practice new and old material to be performed in concert. Rehearsals are every other Tuesday evening, starting the Tuesday after Labor Day, until the end of June. You are encouraged to record your voice section during rehearsal. It’s helpful to make an agreement with at least one person in your section to establish reciprocal support for one another in the event of an absence. And, of course, check the Learn the Songs section of the Members-only section of the website. Please let your section leader know if you will be absent for more than one rehearsal. He/she can help you get lyric sheets and catch you up on announcements.

WHEN CAN I START SINGING WITH THE CHOIR AT AN EVENT?

A new member must:

• Have formally joined the choir (filled out all paperwork, paid dues, etc.)

• Have received new member information/packet

• Be oriented by section leader or membership chair on approved concert dress

• Attended at least three choir rehearsals

• Have sung scheduled event songs during rehearsal and know the lyrics/ song/map of those songs

Page 9: MEMBERSHIP IN MOSAIC HARMONY 2019-2020 Season · 2019-10-01 · a focus in Jazz. In addition to being a multi-instrumentalist, Christian is also a songwriter and has produced songs

September, 2019 8

NOTE:

Mosaic Harmony strives to deliver the highest quality performance possible at every event. In order to do so, it is incumbent upon us to ensure that all singers have a solid command of the songs being performed. While we want choir members to be able to perform with the choir "when they feel ready," the choir director and assistant director reserve the right to request that a member attend additional rehearsals before performing with the choir.

CONCERT ATTENDANCE AND PERFORMANCE

Concert attendance is part of our ministry as members of Mosaic Harmony. Sharing an inspirational message in a concert performance is most gratifying. All the pieces come together to really make us one with each other and with our audience.

Prior to upcoming concert(s), choir members are typically polled regarding their anticipated attendance. It’s important that we keep to our commitment of attendance at concerts so that the full complement of voices is represented.

Via email, you will be kept apprised of performance (and rehearsal) schedules. If you are not receiving MoHa emails, please let your section leader know.

CONCERT DRESS—SCARVES, BOWTIES & POCKET SQUARES

Prior to each performance, women members receive a Mosaic Harmony scarf to wear. In some instances, a member may be asked to change to a scarf of another color to ensure there will be a variety of colors throughout the group. Scarves will be collected at the end of each performance for cleaning. Men will receive a black Mosaic Harmony bow tie and colorful pocket square for use during performances. Men will be asked to return these items only if leaving the choir. Please refer to your Mosaic Harmony Concert Dress Guide (Appendix I) for additional information regarding appropriate attire for concerts.

INITIATING AND PROPOSING CONCERTS

The Concert Coordinator is the point person for incoming performance requests and scheduling. Should you have an event that you would like to propose, please contact the Concert Coordinator at [email protected].

In response to a potential concert engagement, the Concert Coordinator provides a personal note that introduces an information package containing brochures, musical demos and press kit. These same materials are available to all interested groups you think might consider hosting a concert performance for their church, civic, or professional group.

With regard to a specific request, the Concert Coordinator is responsible for coordinating with the Director and Musicians to determine their availability and the appropriateness of the event.

Once a decision has been reached and approved by the Board, the Concert Coordinator will inform the contact person and address all aspects of the concert performance with the host organization, including the time, place and nature; technical requirements; applicable fee; appropriateness of CD sales; and attendance of family and friends of choir members.

APPENDIX II: A SINGER’S PLEDGE

I am a member of Mosaic Harmony, a professional volunteer choir. Membership in a choir is a commitment – to the directors and to the other members of the choir. Every voice is necessary. Without every voice, the choir is not the best it can be. My voice is just as important as every other member’s voice. I do this because I love making music come to life for others. To do this successfully, I will maintain the highest standards of musicianship, performance artistry, and personal discipline my talents and circumstances will allow. I will strive to be a true professional in all that I do. My reward comes from participating in an inspiring performance that fulfills the audience and brings me pleasure in being a part of something bigger than myself. To better accomplish this, I will— HAVE GOOD ATTENDANCE:

• I know Mosaic Harmony depends on me. I will make every effort to attend all rehearsals.

• If I need to miss a rehearsal or performance, I will let my section leader know in advance.

• I will arrange for a colleague to record any missed rehearsals for me.

BE PUNCTUAL:

• I will arrive on time for both rehearsals and performances. Arriving late is distracting to the directors and other choir members and causes me to miss the warm-up, which is an important part of the rehearsal. Arriving on time will also better prepare me for performances.

• I will get seated quickly so we can start on time.

• I will contact my section leader if I am going to arrive late for rehearsal or for a performance.

• I understand that if I am more than 15 minutes late for the warm-up for a performance, then I might not be able to perform, as I will have missed key instructions and review of material.

COME PREPARED:

• I will come to rehearsal with a spirit of cooperation and respect.

• I will arrive at rehearsal prepared and ready to learn.

• I will bring a pencil with me to rehearsals to mark notes on the lyric sheets. This will help me remember special instructions or any changes.

• I understand that it would be helpful to bring a mini-recorder to record parts as they are being taught and rehearsed.

• I will listen to directions the first time they are given.

• I will abide by the concert dress guidelines.

Page 19: MEMBERSHIP IN MOSAIC HARMONY 2019-2020 Season · 2019-10-01 · a focus in Jazz. In addition to being a multi-instrumentalist, Christian is also a songwriter and has produced songs

September, 2019 18

LEARN THE MUSIC:

• I understand that most of the music in this choir is learned by the oral tradition.

• I know that I am expected to learn the music as presented in rehearsal and will be expected to practice on my own.

• I recognize that beyond the first learning of the piece, rehearsal time will be devoted to the development of the choir sound, interpretations, and other musical matters.

• I will make a reasonable effort to develop my own vocal skills, and will make every effort to contribute in a positive manner to the work of the group.

• I understand that when possible, rehearsal recordings on MoHa’s website, lyric sheets, or an internet link to the music will be provided to facilitate my practice at home, but that it is up to me to practice and learn the music.

SOCIALIZE WHEN APPROPRIATE:

• I know that choir singing is a sociable pastime and choirs are full of sociable people! The camaraderie in a choir is one of its important aspects. I promise to make merry to my heart’s content before rehearsal, after rehearsal, or during breaks.

• It’s really easy to start up little conversations with my neighbor during rehearsal. When this happens, the director has to either talk over choir members or wait until its quiet. Chatter slows down the rehearsal or warm-up and distracts those who are trying to pay attention. I will, instead, remain quiet or very quietly hum my part while other sections are rehearsing or learning their parts.

• I will remain silent when the directors are talking.

KEEP SCENTS AT HOME:

• I am aware that many people are sensitive or allergic to strong scents. This includes scented deodorants, aftershave, hand lotion, and hair spray. The deep breathing that accompanies singing worsens the effects of perfumes, hand lotions, and other personal products.

• I will refrain from using scented products.

HYDRATE:

• I will drink plenty of water before rehearsals and performances to stay hydrated. Water is allowed during rehearsals.

• I realize that alcohol and caffeine can dehydrate the vocal chords and that it is in my best interest to avoid them prior to rehearsals and performances.

• If I am allowed to use a water container during a performance, it will be watertight, clear, and contain clear water only.

MAINTAIN A TEAM EFFORT:

• I know that everyone’s talent, heart and spirit are important!

• It is not enough for me to know my part. It is the uniting of the parts that makes the song a work of art.

Page 20: MEMBERSHIP IN MOSAIC HARMONY 2019-2020 Season · 2019-10-01 · a focus in Jazz. In addition to being a multi-instrumentalist, Christian is also a songwriter and has produced songs

September, 2019 19

• I will listen to my section and blend my voice with my colleagues.

• I will listen to how my part fits in with the other sections while they are rehearsing their parts.

• During rehearsals or performances, I will not draw attention to myself by making comments aloud or by unnecessary actions that create distraction from the focus of the rehearsal or performance.

• The best choirs successfully blend voices to create a uniform sound and performance. I will do my part to maintain the uniformity of the choir, both in terms of dress, as well as my actions during performances.

EXERCISE SELF-CONTROL:

• The best disciplinarian in the choir is NOT the director, but each choir member, exercising self-control.

• I will, at all times, practice respect for the choir, including my section leader, assistant director, and director.

COMMUNICATE:

• Each section will have an appointed section leader. I will use my section leader as an avenue for needs, concerns, and information.

• I will notify my section leader in advance of all absences.

Being allowed to make beautiful, inspiring music is a gift. I will seek every opportunity to maximize the talent I have been granted, in the company of like-minded individuals. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to do so, and I embrace Mosaic Harmony’s spirit of community, unity and fellowship.
