He joined the McGovern Center at the University of Texas-Houston in 2009 as the Sam Karff Chair and the Director of the new Campus–Wide Ethics Program—an initiative to enhance the ethics education at all six schools of the UTH Health Science Center, including a new emphasis on inter-professional education. Dr. Spike spent 15 years at the University of Rochester Medical Center, where he taught clinical ethics at the medical school and was Director of the Ethics Consultation Service at the affiliated teaching hospital, Strong Memorial. Dr. Spike won the first place award for innovation in Medical Education for the entire UT system in 2012 for “The Brewsters: a ‘novel’ approach to teaching Professionalism and Ethics.” He was inducted into the UTH Academy of Master Educators in 2013. The James W. Jolliff, M.D. Memorial Endowment annually hosts a lecture presented by an outstanding national leader in the mental health field to discuss current issues in mental health.

The purpose of this seminar is to enhance the knowledge of recent trends in patient care and ethics, and how patient-centered care and ethics go hand-in-hand, while also discussing why teamwork in the clinical setting have grown in recognition over the past ten years.

OBJECTIVES

This program is approved for 3.0 CEU credits for licensed professional counselors and social workers by Providence Health Center, which is accredited as a provider of continuing education by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors and the Texas State Board of Social Workers Examiners.

This lecture is designed for health care professionals in the mental health field including: primary general practice physicians, psychologists, licensed professional counselors, social workers, registered nurses, and other mental health professionals.

v Discuss the reasons that inter-professional education and teamwork in the clinical setting have grown in recognition over the past ten years.

v Explain how both clinical ethics and professionalism have changed clinical practice, making them more patient- centered.

v Discuss how these two different trends could either converge or conflict, and the importance of encouraging their co-evolution.
