i Melwood Annual Report FY 2015
Truer words could not have been spoken. Earl Copus, Melwood’s founding President and CEO wrote this quote nearly ten years ago in his book recounting the history of Melwood. Earl’s insightful evaluation of the critical elements needed to advance Melwood was accurate and timeless. As we look back on 2015, it was a year of continued growth and innovation that continues to honor Earl’s recipe for Melwood’s continued success.
Although we cannot predict the future, what has remained consistent over the past five decades is the need for organizations like Melwood. Through our employment and supportive service programs, we empower people with differing abilities to demonstrate their talents, earn their own income and participate in meaningful work, training and recreation programs. The growth Melwood has experienced this year is a result of our dedication to transforming the lives of people with differing abilities. Our legacy was built on the dreams, passion and entrepreneurial leadership of our founders. It will continue to flourish through
the continued thoughtful and strategic guidance of Melwood’s community of staff, volunteers and supporters who are dedicated to our long-term sustainability and continued growth.
It has truly been an honor to serve as the Melwood Board Chair. As I pass the baton to George Watkins, a dedicated and passionate supporter of Melwood’s mission, I am confident that I am placing Melwood in good hands. As you read the story of our achievements in 2015, I hope that you will feel the same excitement and confidence we have about our progress. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, the Melwood community, for your unwavering support of our mission. You are making a difference!
Mike Keppler Chair, Melwood Board of Directors
“Dreams, passion, caring attitudes, good management, state-of-the-art programs and
entrepreneurial leadership will carry the Melwood of the past into the Melwood of the future”
– Earl Copus, Jr., 2005
A Message from the Board Chair THE MELWOOD OF THE FUTURE
Melwood Annual Report FY 2015 ii
In 2015, all of our efforts were anchored by two strategic goals: reshaping Melwood for the 21st Century and investing in our vision to serve more people. We recognize that our goals are very ambitious. Our commitment to empowering people with differing abilities to transform their lives was our driving force to achieve and exceed our own expectations.
Melwood has a time-honored tradition of developing cutting-edge programs that address the needs of people with differing abilities. In July 2014, at the start of the fiscal year, we implemented our eRecycling program. Through this program our employees receive customized training and the benefit of a rewarding job in technology, higher pay and transferrable skills. To date more than 20 people with differing abilities have received training or employment through the program.
November marked the launch of Operation: Tohidu, an experiential program designed to help veterans and active duty military members recover from post-traumatic stress, mild-to-moderate traumatic brain injury, and other deployment-related traumas. Our brave warfighters are learning new ways to cope, building lifetime bonds with their fellow comrades and, by the end of the retreat, they have begun the journey to recovery. As Operation: Tohidu continues to grow I am confident that it will become a vital resource to warfighters returning from combat and reintegrating back into our communities.
In April, Melwood acquired the Grounds Maintenance, Landscaping, and Snow/Ice Removal contract at the US Army Research Laboratory (ARL), Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG). Through this contract, we added 10 new jobs including five for people with differing
abilities and one veteran. As a result of our overall efforts this year, Melwood provided 154 people with the opportunity to participate in a new program and created 128 new job opportunities.
At the beginning of May, we began producing solar energy at our Dower House campus. Melwood will reap the benefits of our modernized infrastructure for years to come. The complete system, including rooftop and carport systems, produces enough energy to offset all of the electricity usage at the Dower House campus, saving our organization more than $1 million over the next 20 years. We are now one of the leading solar energy producers in the state of Maryland. We’ve made great strides toward creating a range of productive new opportunities for the people we serve… and we’re just beginning!
This 2015 Annual Report, demonstrates our collective efforts to grow our existing services and develop new opportunities for the people we serve. In doing so, it is my hope that we spark a new conversation surrounding progressive employment and alternative programming for people with differing abilities. I sincerely thank you, our dedicated Melwood family of donors, customers, volunteers and staff for all of their contributions to Melwood’s tremendous growth this year. As we look toward Fiscal Year 2016 and beyond, we will continue to invest in our vision, our mission and our people.
Cari DeSantis President and CEO Melwood
At Melwood, we are committed to creating opportunities for people with differing abilities to succeed in every
aspect of their lives.
A Message from the CEO INVESTING IN OUR VISION
1 Melwood Annual Report FY 2015
Introduction to MELWOOD
Mission Statement and Vision
Who We Are Melwood is one of the leading nonprofit organizations in the region providing a wide range of services that improve the quality of life for people with differing abilities.
Our Mission Melwood advocates for and empowers individuals with differing abilities to transform their own lives through unique opportunities to work and play in the community.
Our Vision A world where people with differing abilities are fully included.
Our Impact Utilizing the innovative social entrepreneurial model on which Melwood was founded, we offer job training, employment, life skill improvement, community support and recreation opportunities to more than 1900 people each year. We empower more than 800 people with differing abilities with a good job and direct supports. As a result Melwood is one of the largest employers of people with differing abilities in the Eastern Region of the United States.

Emerging INITIATIVES
Creating New Opportunities through our Electronics Recycling Program This year, Melwood unveiled its Electronics Recycling Solutions Program in partnership with eWorks, a national program designed to provide electronics recycling and refurbishment services for local communities and large corporations across the United States. The program is housed in the Copus Training Center on the Dower House campus.
Our eRecycling program is our latest social entrepreneurial initiative. Thus far we have created 23 jobs for people with differing abilities through the program. Our employees are being provided with customized training that gives them the

opportunity to learn every job duty and further enhance their skill set.
Leading the Charge with Solar Energy In May, we began producing solar energy to support our administrative buildings, training facilities and electronics recycling facility at our Dower House campus. The conversion has allowed the organization to create 21st century solutions for energy efficiency that will benefit not only Melwood, but also the Greater Washington Community by dramatically reducing our carbon footprint. We now have a dual rooftop and carport installation with more than 3-thousand solar panels; it is one of the largest installations of its kind in the region. In total we will produce 1,202 megawatt hours annually, this is equivalent to taking 175 cars off the road for one year, or offsetting
the carbon dioxide emissions from over 40,000 gallons of gasoline.
The complete system, including the rooftop and carport, produces enough energy to offset all of the electricity usage at the Dower House campus, which will save our organization more than $1 million dollars over the next 20 years. Melwood is now one of the leading solar energy producers in the state of Maryland! Ultimately, this helps us to reduce our overhead costs and filter those funds back into our programming so that we can provide even more services for people with differing abilities, which is always our goal.

Melwood eSolutions Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
This summer, Melwood held a ribbon cutting ceremony on our Dower House campus celebrating our new eSolutions program. Melwood’s President and CEO, Cari DeSantis, noted that our electronics-recycling program is the next step in empowering people with differing abilities to transform their lives through unique opportunities. Since the program’s launch, the staff has processed more than one-half million pounds of equipment and 2 employees were certified to operate a forklift.
Congressman Steny Hoyer served as the special guest speaker at the ceremony. In his remarks he reflected on Melwood’s legacy of creating innovative programming for people with differing abilities. He also discussed the positive impact the two initiatives will have on our community, providing jobs and improving the environment for years to come. We are very excited about these initiatives and the impact both will have on our efforts to enhance the lives of people with differing abilities.
Also on hand for the event were a host of state officials including the Director of the Maryland Energy Administration, Leigh Williams; Director of the Maryland Environmental Service, James Harkins; representatives from the Prince George’s and Charles County Chambers, corporate partners and a handful of special guests.

A New Alternative for our Warfighters: Operation: Tohidu™
November marked the launch of Operation: Tohidu™, an ongoing series of therapeutic retreats designed for a growing population of war heroes living with post-traumatic stress. With the assistance of mentor guests, two chaplains, our clinical director and a variety of speakers, Melwood has empowered veterans and active duty military members from across the country to become subject matter experts on post-traumatic stress and equipped them with valuable coping mechanisms to begin their journey to recovery.
In a peaceful and secluded atmosphere, participants connect with nature and their fellow comrades to become empowered with alternative therapies to better manage anxiety and post-traumatic stress. At our 108-acre Retreat and Recreation Center guests participate in a combination of educational and experiential activities utilizing a strict program model. Any veteran or active duty service member who has been diagnosed or is self-reporting with post-traumatic stress or other deployment related trauma is eligible to attend this program which
Melwood offers free-of-charge to its participants. It is our way of thanking them for their dedicated service to protecting our Nation.

We’ve nurtured our vibrant programs with the goal of providing more children, youth and adults with differing abilities opportunities to
flourish at home and in their communities.
In 2015 we set a goal of creating a more holistic approach to the supportive services we provide. By streamlining our program offerings we provided the people we serve with more opportunities to enjoy meaningful services. Our objective is to ensure that every participant in our programs feels valued, accepted and a part of a larger whole. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that every person who participates in our programs has a meaningful, memorable and transformative experience. Only then are we truly fulfilling our founders’ vision of a world where people with differing abilities are fully included.

Volunteering at MELWOOD
VOLUNTEERSPOTLIGHT
Theodore Wesley “TW” BoydTheodore “TW” Boyd joined Melwood’s team of volunteers three years ago. He heard a radio ad about the organization and decided to learn more about our mission. He arrived at Melwood’s Dower House campus and observed an event our staff hosted for our day services program participants. He decided that day to volunteer his time. After just a few weeks, he discovered how much the program participants love music. He recognized how much the music helped brighten their mood and allowed them to express themselves. So he decided to host a weekly dance party.
TW still hosts a dance party each week for the people we serve and they’re still a hit. He describes his experience at Melwood as uplifting and one of his greatest inspirations. He now considers the individuals that he works with a part of his as family.
Melwood recognizes the important role that volunteers play in our organization. This year we expanded our volunteer program by adding 73 new volunteers to our database. The increase in volunteers has allowed the organization to provide more support to programs and the people we serve.
As an important part of our community, our volunteers are a valuable resource to our mission, programs and services. On behalf of the entire Melwood family, we invite you to participate in our volunteer program. Please find more information regarding our volunteer opportunities at: Melwood.org/volunteer.

With the hiring of a new manage-ment team in 2013, we made a commitment to the entire Melwood community to have a renewed focus on building our financialw strength. Fiscal Year 2015 was a balanced approach to growing top-line reve-nues, eliminating waste and making strategic investments. We achieved a sixth straight year of surplus while weathering federal and state budget storms. Our Balance Sheet is as strong as it’s ever been and provides us the ability to pursue innovative planning and responsible risk-taking.
As we continued to implement our strategic plan, Melwood’s financial focus in Fiscal Year 2015 was on making key investments in our people, processes and operating platform. Not only do these investments have immediate payoff, but they position Melwood for the future. Our efficient operating structure generated the positive cash flow necessary to make these investments. While Fiscal Year 2016 will continue to produce many financial challenges, our success lies in a prudent balance of our mission and our margins.1728 Total people
