Tournament Memories
By Kimber Korell
Tournaments were fun for everyone. Some took home trophies; others took
home memories. One memory that Mrs. Hjelvik took home from the district
tournament is Holden Roskelley taking off his shorts before he made it to the
locker room because he had gotten blood on them. What a sight that must’ve
been! Another one of her memories was Deva Bascom fighting the Ekalaka Bull-
dogs’ mascot. We’re all pretty sure you won that brawl, Deva! Joe Griswold’s fa-
vorite memory from tournaments was the best rides up there; he said they were
nice and very fun. Kaigen Roskelley’s favorite memory was playing as tough as
she could and getting third in divisionals. Megan Brewer said her favorite tourna-
ment memories were the fun bus rides which she got a lot of sleep on, great
food, and an amazing team. Davon Meredith’s favorite memory was winning the
very tough championship game that got them to divisonals. BreElle Wacker said
her favorite memory she took away from tournaments was winning the district
championship for girls’ team for the first time ever. Tournaments were fun for
everyone involved, whether you were a parent, fan, or player. Our Broncs and
Lady Broncs did exceptionally well this basketball season, and we all hope you
players can do it again next year!

Until Next Season
By Gracey Adams
The Lady Broncs went into tournaments in full swing.
The opening round the Lady Broncs
played the Custer-Hysham Rebels.
The Broncs played hard and came
out with the win. The second game
the Lady Broncs had to play the
Northern Cheyenne Eagles. The Lady
Broncs knew they could win and
showed they could. The Broncs won
the game which put them in the district championship.
The Lady Broncs were pretty nervous to be playing in
the championship, but they knew they could do it. The
Broncs faced the Wibaux Longhorns in the champion-
ship. The game went into overtime tied at 37-37; the
girls came back from being nine
points behind in the overtime. The
Lady Broncs are district champions.
After the great win, the Broncs had to
work hard for the next weekend in
Laurel. The opening round the Broncs
had to play the Plenty Coups Warriors.
They girls came out a little slow, but
they then went on a run. They were up
by eleven when they went into
halftime. The girls came out and showed who they real-
ly were. The next evening the Broncs had to face the
Broadview-Lavina Pirates. The girls knew it wouldn’t
come easy, knowing how good of a team they were
and not having BreElle to help them due to a knee inju-
ry. The Broncs came out and tried their best but the
Pirates defeated them. The girls had to stay over in
Billings that night and play a nine thirty morning game.
The Broncs had to play the Wibaux Longhorns in the
loser out game. The girls knew that they could do it
since they had done it two times before. The Broncs
defeated the Longhorns. The Broncs then went on to
the consolation game that night against the Park City
Panthers. The Broncs were tired from the morning
game, but they came out and proved themselves and
defeated the Panthers.
Custer-Hysham Rebels 55-26
Northern Cheyenne Eagles 47-30
Wibaux Longhorns 47-28
Plenty Coups Warriors 59-25
Broadview-Lavina 33-47
Wibaux Longhorns 52-45
Park City Panthers 57-39
The Broncs were hoping for a challenge game, but
they didn’t get one. Shayla summed up the season:
“ I had a lot of fun this season. We worked really
hard and did something that hasn’t been done in for-
ty years!” The girls got third place in their division.
This is the best finish that Melstone has had for over
30 years. Thank you to the community for the support
all season!

Eva Kor: Holocaust Survivor
By Kimber Korell
“Eva Kor was just ten years old when she and her twin
sister, Miriam, arrived in
Auschwitz and were herded
into the sadistic care of the
man known as Dr. Josef
Mengle,” according to the an-
nouncement for an upcoming
presentation. Mengle used
Auschwitz as an opportunity
to continue his anthropological studies and research on
heredity, using inmates for human experimentation. The
experiments had no regard for the health or safety of
the victims. He was particularly interested in identical
twins, people with eyes of two different colors, dwarfs,
and people with physical abnormalities. Eva Kor will be
speaking in Miles City on April 24 at 10:30 a.m. at the
Custer County District High School. The juniors and sen-
iors will attend with Mrs. Hjelvik to listen to her public
lecture. Eva will talk about what she experienced in
Auschwitz, how she recovered, and her remarkable deci-
sion to publicly forgive all Nazis and Dr. Mengle. Eva is
definitely an amazing woman who has had to endure so
much. She has made it her life mission to tell the world
her story and to speak out for those who can no longer
be heard.

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup chicken broth
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon salt

Onto the Next One
By Dwight DeJaegher
The last game of the regular
season was an easy win for
the boys against Broadus to
get them ready for tourna-
ments (58-19). The first day of
the district tournaments the
boys met Custer-Hysham, and
it started rough, but the boys
still won (68-32). The next day
out in the semifinals the boys
met with Ekalaka, and they
came out ready to get the
win (48-31). Saturday night in
the championship round the
boys met with Wibaux for the third time of the season.
The boys played a tough one, but they got the win in
overtime by two to get the district title (41-39). On
Thursday March 3rd the boys played in game three at
divisionals against Harlowton. The boys lost to Harlow-
ton by four (44-40).The next day the boys met Jordan
and they came out ready to get the win (63-30). The
next morning the boys played Terry and continued on
with their season (44-28). The same night in the conso-
lation game the boys played Reed-Point Rapelje and
won in overtime (43-40). The boys faced Plenty Coups
Monday night in the challenge game to see if they
could go to state but lost by ten (45-55). Coach Pierce
remarked that he “was very pround of us because of
our age and how young we were and how far we made
it.”
