1. STAFF UPDATE Many of you will already know that Alan Horberry (DHT) was promoted to the post of Head Teacher at Mintlaw Academy and left the school in mid-June. Alan had a considerable impact in his seven years at the school with a key responsibility for Raising Attainment. He was very committed to mentoring as a way of enabling young people to exceed their own expectations. All his colleagues wish him well at Mintlaw. Olwen Fraser (PT Faculty of Health) has been appointed Acting DHT and Anne Watson has taken on the Acting PT Faculty of Health. Meldrum Academy staff gathered after school to wish Anne Wyness (Health) a very happy and well deserved retirement. Anne is an excellent Home Economics teacher who has supported pupils both in and out of the classroom. She has been a quiet champion for North East food and farming and coached Meldrum pupils to 7 Taste of Grampian wins. She also co-founded MAFA, co-ordinated Breakfast week and has run a wide range of fun cookery activities for pupils and parents. Just staring on their careers, our very best wishes for enjoyable teaching careers go to our three Probationer Teachers; Cliona Gatenby (Modern Languages), Amanda Barnett (English) and Roxanne McIntosh (Biology) who have successfully completed their Induction. Our thanks go to Kelly Stephen (Biology) who has taught with us since the New Year, taking a number of classes through to the recent SQA exams. We welcome Rebecca Lopez Lozano who joins us as a probationer teacher in the Science Faculty teaching Biology A number of staff are travelling abroad to further their careers and experience new cultures. Alan Whitecross (Design) travels to Spain while his colleague Fraser Christie (Design) will experience colder climes in Sweden. Joyce Van Den Hoven (SfL) travels to Uzbekistan and Neil Thomson (SfL) will be Baltic-bound as he goes to work in Latvia. There are changes in our Learning Support Assistant team. Norma Chapman and Louise Elder are leaving the team to pursue other avenues while Mandy Ligertwood moves within the Meldrum School Cluster to our neighbouring primary school. We also say goodbye to Karen Stevenson who has been working in our school office in recent months. We wish them all well. Jenna Drummond (Health) leaves us to return to her homeland in the south west of Scotland and Kelly Craig (Health) temporarily leaves us to go on maternity leave. We welcome Angela Waite into the Health Faculty and she will undertake her induction year with us. In the Maths faculty Maureen Mackinnon is undertaking a career break during the coming session and the faculty will be joined by Lucy Manning who will be on her induction year. We were pleased to be visited by Martin Coutts who sends his thanks to all those colleagues, parents and pupils who have sent him their best wishes. The school is actively recruiting to fill any remaining vacant positions for the new session.

2. ADDITIONAL IN-SERVICE DAYS: Head of Service The Scottish Government has provided two additional in-service days to support secondary teachers’ in their developments for new national qualifications in Curriculum for Excellence. These days are to be taken in academic session 2012/13. After consultation with secondary Head Teachers and LNCT, it has been agreed the additional days will be: Tuesday 21 August 2012 Monday 29 October 2012

This will mean all secondary schools and secondary departments of special schools being closed for pupils on those days. Primary schools will not be affected and will remain open. 3. PARACETAMOL SAFETY: Debbie Smith, School Nurse, 01651 871311. I would just like to raise awareness with families of the need to be careful with accidently taking more than the prescribed dosage of paracetamol without realising the potential danger of harm from doing this,. Paracetamol is perfectly safe as long as dosage guidelines are followed, but only a small overdose of paracetamol can cause significant liver damage and resulting health problems. Please ensure that if you permit your child to take their own supply of paracetamol to school that they only take a very small number (suggest 2) to ensure that they cannot be accidentally be misused. 4. MELDRUM ACADEMY WINS ANNE FRANK AWARD: Mrs R Jackson (Social Subject Faculty)

(from l to r: Ruari MacColl, Chloe Johnston, and Phoebe Lentell – all S2 pupils) We are standing with the Judges of the competition and the Lord Mayor of Aberdeen (his last official duty) As part of the S2 CBC Diversity course, the pupils had to produce a newspaper or magazine which highlighted the barriers that some people face everyday because of

4

learning, physical or mental difficulty. These were collected in and, along with articles and whole school assembly power points from the Diversity Committee, were entered into the Grampian Regional Equality Council Anne Frank Awards competition. Judges’ Comments included phrases such as “impressive and highly inclusive project”, “the project tackled a broad range of serious issues in a very mature way”, and “the school has a well established, embedded and completely ‘owned’ culture of inclusion.” The hard work of both staff and pupils throughout the year was recognised with a first place win by Meldrum Academy. Along with a certificate and trophy, the school will now host a bronze statue of Anne Frank in the library for a year. Congratulations and well done to all pupils for Embracing Diversity! 5. S2 ENERGY TRIPS: Mrs Ingram On the 26th and 27th April all S2 pupils had a chance to visit locations around Aberdeen which would expand their local and international knowledge of the energy industry. The Satrosphere provided activities on alternative forms of energy and included a quiz to test their knowledge of energy consumption in regular household tasks. A visit to the Maritime Museum gave then a look at the traditional skills that Aberdeen had to offer in employment in the past and the changes that have happened as it became an international hub for the oil industry. In order to see different types of employment the oil industry had to offer groups visited either BIS Salamis or Wild wells. BIS Salamis provide a support and maintenance service to the industry, through inspections, scaffolding and rope access teams. Wildwells provides a fire fighting service around the world, capping wells and was involved in the recent disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. At there office pupils had a chance to control a fire on a oil platform in a simulated environment. These trips allowed pupils to see some of the ways energy provides work in the local area and some of the variety of careers and jobs available. 6. SENIOR BOYS FOOTBALL: Miss Watson (Health Faculty) Meldrum 3 – 1 Inverurie

We have finished the school football season on a high winning the Aberdeenshire Cup for the 3rd time. Scott DAWSON captained his team to glory at Bellslea Park, Fraserburgh on Friday 11th May. Jamie DUNCAN scored the first goal to put Meldrum 1-0 against a strong Inverurie side. Inverurie then equalised but Lukas KENNEDY scored a

5

penalty in extra time to put Meldrum 2-1 up. Steven BENZIE then sealed victory for Meldrum with a late goal in extra time. All boys should be commended on their fantastic achievement and success. Well-done this year.

Many thanks to all the parents and pupils who came to support the team.

The U15s had a successful season in the Aberdeenshire Cup and were runners up in the final, narrowly losing to Inverurie 2-1. The team was captained by Michael Duncan. Goal Scorer on the night of the final was Kyle Sutherland who scored a tremendous goal from a free kick. Andrew Smart, Kyle Gordon, Chris Hay and Michael Duncan also represented Aberdeenshire in the select squad this year. Congratulations to all the boys and good luck in the senior team next year.

10. S3 GEOGRAPHY FIELDTRIP: Alana Williams (3B2) On our geography field trip to the Burn O’Vat visitor centre and the Muir of Dinnet nature reserve, we recorded information about the area. We asked the ranger questions how they look after the animals and the area; we took field sketches of the Burn O’Vat waterfall and Loch Kinord from the viewpoint; we measured the footpath erosion of the visitor’s foot paths and measured the speed of the river flow. After recording all the information of the nature reserve we travelled to Aboyne to research what amenities are there for tourists visiting the area and the local people in the area; we recorded what shops were available and took a traffic count to measure the amount of people who travelled through Aboyne. Lastly we asked visitors to the area why they came to Aboyne and if the come regularly. After returning to the school we put all the information we found onto posters. Even though the weather wasn’t that great it was still an enjoyable day.

11. ACTIVITIES DAYS (30 – 31st May 2012) DEESIDE ACTIVITY CENTRE: Steven Hazlerigg (3S2) and Blair Holman (3W2) The activities we did on this trip where Archery, Rifle shooting, orienteering and Quad Biking. Our group did orienteering first and almost everyone in our group liked it and was enthusiastic. Our group was fastest so we each got a £10 gift voucher. After that we did rifle shooting, which everyone liked. Two teams of four separated and competed in an unofficial way at shooting targets down before the over team could. The third thing we did was Archery, in this we had to shoot a target at a distance of 5 meters. It was quite difficult but enjoyable to do. Quad biking was the last thing we did and was my favourite because we got to ride a quad bike around a field; it was fun because we had the challenge of trying to manoeuvre it around obstacles. Our favourite activity was the quad biking but our least favourite activity was archery but we think it may have been our least favourite because the distance was to short and we would like to have done it at a further distance. We thought that the quad bikes could have spent less time going round cones but more time going on the Tracks around the forest area. SNOZONE: Bethany Jolly (2W1) We went to Snozone on Wednesday the 30th of May. We left the school at 7am and travelled by bus down to Glasgow. En-route to Glasgow we watched two movies. It took us 4 hours to get to Glasgow and we had a 15 minute break at Tesco in Dundee. When we arrived at Snozone we had to get changed into our waterproof clothes and our wellies. We stood about while the lady who was supervising us talked us through what we would be doing. Our first activity was sledging, we went sledging on the slope for 45 minutes. After sledging we all went for something to eat. Most people had pizza and others had chicken nuggets. After we had finished eating we went back out to the slopes for our snowboarding/skiing lessons. It was great fun. Before we all went back on the bus we had 15 minutes to look around the X-scape centre and have fun. We all set off on the journey back home and we arrived back the Academy for 7pm. On the way home we attached one other film. Snozone was good fund and everyone enjoyed it and had a good laugh. GORGE WALKING: Declan Steele (2G1) You should take part in the experience of a lifetime because you see, feel and enjoy spectacular new outdoor experiences with amazing scenery. You will not only be wooed by the sights and environment but by the adrenalin rush when jumping, swimming , squeezing and forcing your way up waterfalls and tight gaps into small inlets. I have enjoyed the thrills of gorge walking for two years and I highly recommend it. This time the group were at the Bridge ‘O’ Broon river which is a fast flowing river that carves its way through the stone and rock which the guide and I couldn’t identify.

9

At each side of the river there are steep cliff-like uneven walls which protrude under the water with completely smoothed and rounded edges where the water has corroded it. Clinging to the side of the gorge are a variety of mosses and lichens which thrive in the wet and damp. For me the best part was climbing up waterfalls and jumping off into the deep pools. When you get on the edge of the drop you can feel the butterflies in your stomach but once you jump you immediately want to do it again. When the group come across a waterfall everyone has their turn of fighting their way almost up to the top and then being pushed back down with the flow and current to the pool below. CANOEING: Catriona Mutch (2W2) When we arrived at the part of the Spey to canoe we got off the bus and were allocated wetsuits and neoprene socks. We quickly changed and headed up the path for a safety talk. We then picked up our inflatable kayaks and head down to the river. We were told the part of the river we would start from was called an eddy and that was where the calm, slow moving water was. We practiced paddling up and down and round and round in the eddy then we were down how we could cross the faster flowing water to get to the other side. After this we were taught how to swim safely in fast moving water - defensive swimming. The rest of the morning was spent going over rapids and small waves. After lunch we had the choice to change to some water bugs which you lay on top of and paddled with your arms. Not everyone wanted to go on the water bugs so some stayed in the kayaks. We then did the same exercise as before, crossing the river and doing defensive swimming in even faster flowing rapids. We regrouped and went over some big rapids on the water bugs and then did some swimming. The last thing we did was jumping from big rocks into an eddy and floating away. The day ended as it started by getting changed and tidying up all the equipment and then back on the bus. It was a great day and everyone enjoyed it 12. SPAIN WATER SPORTS TRIP: Sam Pugh (3S2) and Holly Dawson (3W1)

T

10

The water sports trip to Spain was really good and we would recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity to go. 52 pupils and 5 teachers went on the trip which was organised by Miss Drummond. The transport included a 36 hour bus journey and a 2 hour ferry crossing. Once we got to the camp there was lots of activities for us to do such as snorkelling, raft-building, mountain biking, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, water skiing, banana boating and ringos. The accommodation we stayed in was caravans which slept up to 6 people – we all got to choose who we wanted to share with. During the trip we had a day out to Barcelona where we could choose if we wanted to go to the Zoo or the Nou Camp and then we all went shopping in the afternoon. We also had a day out at a Water Park which was really good fun. Throughout the trip we all had lots of laughs and made some very good memories which is why we will never forget the trip. 13. 2012 SKI TRIP In the Easter break this year a large group of senior pupils went on a ski trip to a small ski resort called Pila in the Aosta Valley in Italy. Each day there were five hours of group tuition and an additional evening activity. The trip was very well organised with a ski rep in the hotel supplied by Interski. Each day the pupils had to take a 20 minute gondola ride from the valley floor where it was often 20 degrees, to the high resort where the snow field began. The trip offered skiing for all abilities of pupils from complete beginners who had never tried the sport to expert skiers with plenty of confidence. One of the pupils who went on the trip was selected to go to Manchester for a final selection for a ski scholarship next year with the Interski company. He was chosen from over 10,000 young skiers to attend this selection day where 10 places are up for grabs – a very well done to Matthew Royce on this achievement. This trip was a great success as all the pupils and staff thoroughly enjoyed it and all pupils should be looking forward to the next one. 14. PARIS TRIP : Hayley Mullan (2B1)

11

I went on my first secondary school trip during the Activity Days and I enjoyed every second of it. We left by train to travel down to London, a quick stop at McDonalds and then on the Eurostar to Paris! Getting on the Eurostar is an experience; it’s just like boarding a plane, very different from my (limited) experience on trains. The hotel was good although our bathroom door didn’t work and kept springing open at annoying moments. Disneyland was the first thing we did but with the long queues we only got on three rides. Disney Studios had better rides but like the former had very long lines. We got into ‘Rock and Roll Starring Aerosmith’ and ‘Armageddon’ which is a sound set on which you are actors filming a new scene during which an asteroid hits the Russian Space station you are on. It is very exciting with lights, explosions and caving in roofs with you in the middle of the action. We also visited the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre (the Mona Lisa’s eyes don’t follow you around the room so it was a bit of an anti-climax), the Arc de Triomphe (I enjoyed this very much), Artists Square, a boat cruise (this was good), Notre Dame, Stade de France (this surprised me as being one of the most enjoyable parts of the trip) and Parc Asterix (much better than Disneyland as the rides are more exciting, the food was better and queues shorter). The Metro is like the London Underground, very claustrophobic but fast. It was much quicker than taking a bus everywhere and was a pretty cool experience. I really enjoyed this trip and would recommend that you go on it during the Activity Days. It was a brilliant experience and I would love to do it again. 15. A TASTE OF GRAMPIAN SECONDARY SCHOOL COMPETITION: Mrs A Wyness (Health Faculty)

A TASTE OF GRAMPIAN

Secondary School Competition 2012 The winning school: Meldrum Academy

Team – Georgie Ligertwood and mentor chef Norman Mundie

This year the format was changed and organised by Future Chef Springboard. This meant that only one pupil could enter as they had a chef mentor to work along with. Some schools had to withdraw their entry before the competition to leave only Mintlaw Academy and Meldrum Academy in the Cook Off. Georgie Ligertwood, S5, and Norman Mundie, head chef and owner of the Fjiord Inn, Fisherford was the Meldrum team. Adam Youngson, S4, and Mike Watt, chef at Buchan Braes Hotel, was the Mintlaw team

12

Robert Lovie was compeer and the judges from Banff Buchan College watched and marked the teams as they prepared, cooked and presented their two course menus. It was a close competition with equal scores until celebrity chef, Ed Baines, tasted, judged and declared that getting the seasoning just right was the deciding factor and so awarded Meldrum Academy the first prize. This was a great team effort by Georgie and Norman. They were brilliant on the day. Congratulations to them both. 16. DANCERS GREET THE OLYMPIC TORCH: JORJA BRADLEY 4W1 I was at Balmoral Castle on June along with Orla Cameron, Emily Adam and Rachel Garden as part of the Aberdeenshire dance group called AdHOC. We were there to dance at a reception that had been organised to welcome the Olympic Torch into Aberdeenshire. We are a contemporary dance company who meet in Inverurie every Saturday at 10AM for our two hour practice. Later this summer we will be performing at HMT, Aberdeen as part of the BIG DANCE we have also danced at The Lemon Tree. The group will be recruiting after the summer so if you are keen to dance please contact one of us. 17. MAFA – MELDRUM ACADEMY FARMING ASSOCIATION: Mrs A Wyness (Health Faculty) Since the Easter holidays we have visited St Johns Wells farm near Fyvie where the hosts Harry and Wendy Sleigh gave us a talk and guided tour of the farm. We saw a day old foal, lots of cows, calves and bulls, as well as sheep, rare breed hens and Tails the friendly farm dog. The state of the art new sheds were well thought out for cattle handling and feeding. There was a range of machinery in the shed including a wood chipping machine which created much interest. Harry and Wendy showed us examples of how improvements had been made to the grass and arable fields since they started using GPS for precision application of lime and fertilizers. The record book was impressive and easy to follow showing how technology, although initially expensive, has helped to improve yields for each field. Then we drove up the hill to see 3 wind turbines. Harry explained the planning and building process to us before inviting us inside one of the turbines. The computers were large and took up most of the floor space but they do control over 300 sensors to turn the blades to capture maximum wind to make green power. This is part of the renewable plan for energy for Scotland. The vote of thanks was given by Sebby Sharkey. As I will be leaving the school at summer, I would like to sincerely thank all the business people who have willingly given their time and support to MAFA. Mrs Rebecca Jackson will take over the running of MAFA along with Mrs Morna Ingram and I am happy that the club will be continuing in good hands.

13

I have thoroughly enjoyed the MAFA meetings over the years. It is a good opportunity for pupils with a common interest in farming, food and the countryside to meet and share their experiences. I would also like to thank all pupils, parents and staff for the support, kindness and respect shown to me since the school opened in 2002. I have enjoyed my time at Meldrum Academy where the buildings and facilities are good but the people within are even better.

18. BUSINESS MANAGEMENT UPDATE: Mrs Jesamine (BEIT Faculty) We have had another very busy session and I am sure that the pupils are looking forward to having a nice long rest. Our new S4 Intermediate 2 pupils have been readying themselves for Meldrum’s version of ‘The Apprentice’. Two groups will go ‘head to head’ to find out which group’s fitness routine and approach to selling their fitness franchise will meet with the judge’s approval on Wednesday 27 June. On hand to utter those immortal words “You’re Fired” and “You’re Hired” will be our own Mrs Olwen Fraser and retired business man Lewis Bainbridge. I am very glad that it’s not me making the decision as both groups have been working extremely hard on their pitches. I will let you all know what happens in the next edition of our newsletter. I am looking forward to the Awards Ceremony on 21 June where it is lovely to see our youngsters getting the credit they deserve for the hard work and effort they put in. Well done to all our BEIT pupils who are receiving the Faculty Awards and to Annie Gillan who will be receiving the RBS Marketing prize. Visiting Speakers and Industrial Visit Shout Out If any of you would be willing to come in and talk to the Business Management pupils or would consider us coming for a visit it would be great to hear from you. I can be contacted by phoning the school or be e-mail at [email protected]. S4 BUSINESS MANAGEMENT: Annabel Gillan (3S2) As part of our marketing section in our business management course we completed a task which involved coming up with ideas for a new RBS account. The account was based for teenagers allowing them to both spend and save. It was our task to come up with a marketing campaign to promote the account by designing a leaflet, web page, storyboard for an advert and a presentation. We each presented to each other within the class and the best few where picked and put forward to be judged by a manager of RBS. 19. DESIGN EXHIBITION 2012: Mr Farquhar (Design Faculty) The Meldrum Academy Design Faculty Exhibition took place at the Academy on Monday 21st May 2012 where over 300 pupils from all year groups had their Art, Graphics and Craft work on public display. Meldrum Rotary Club members kindly agreed to judge the work and we asked our distinguished guests to award ‘Highly Commends’ and ‘Commends’ to work that particularly stood out before the Exhibition opened to the public. A £10 book

14

token was awarded the same evening to the six ‘Highly Commends.’ The ‘Commends’ exhibits are all displayed throughout the school for the whole of the next school year. The Highly commended pupils were Naomi Hazelrigg S1, Gavin McBride S2, Emma Saddington S3, Rhona Cummine S3, Ellen Caveney S6 and Rowan Flint S6. The event was very well attended by parents and friends who were delighted to have the opportunity to view the excellent work produced by the hard work and enthusiasm of the pupils of Meldrum Academy.

20. BIG DANCE 2012: Mrs Gifford and Miss Drummond Celebrating Success! A huge WELL DONE to everyone who was involved in the Big Dance on Fri 18th May. Big Dance 2012 will be the UK’s biggest celebration of dance. Thousands of events will take place across the UK in all sorts of locations – lidos, parks, palaces, schools, high streets and squares – in all dance styles, as part of the London 2012 Festival, the culmination of the cultural Olympiad. Georgia Boylan, Leila Robertson, Mairi Hendry, Flora Hind, Debra Jamieson, Chloe Johnston, Ellen Stevens, Eireann Boughey, Catriona Mutch performed the 5 minute Olympic themed choreography fantastically well and should be very proud of their participation in this event. Well done from Mrs Gifford and Miss Drummond! ~ www.bigdance2012.com

21. ROAD SAFETY GRAMPIAN: Grampian Police

As the summer holidays draw near and you start thinking about the warm sunny days ahead, take a moment to think about your safety whilst using the roads. For some young people, the summer will be full of fun and enjoyment, but unfortunately for others it will be filled with pain and tragedy. Every year in the Grampian area young people die on our roads needlessly. The majority of these collisions could easily have been

avoided if the drivers had shown a more mature attitude to driving and regard for their and other road users safety. Past collisions have shown the following as the main causes – Speed- The faster you drive, the less time you have to take in what's happening around you and the greater the distance that is required to bring your vehicle to a stop. It is not clever or impressive to drive at high speed. Other drivers will not be expecting you to be travelling at speed and may misjudge a manoeuvre. Remember, as a young driver you still have limited experience. You only become experienced when you have been driving for many years. You may not live long enough to gain this experience if you drive at high speeds. Alcohol - Any amount of alcohol consumed will have an adverse effect on your ability to drive. Even a small glass of wine or a half pint of lager will affect your coordination and slow down the thinking process. Do not feel pressured by your friends into having an alcoholic drink if you are driving. One in six of all road deaths are attributed to alcohol. You are the driver, you make the decisions - don't make the wrong one! Drugs – Illegal substances are known to have a detrimental affect on the body and it's development. Consuming drugs and thereafter getting behind the wheel of a vehicle is complete stupidity. Like alcohol, drugs affect your coordination and thinking process. Even prescribed and over the counter medication can affect your ability to drive, so read the leaflet accompanying it. Carelessness – Concentrate on your driving at all times. Pay particular attention on the approach to and at junctions. Remember, overtaking is the most dangerous manoeuvre you will make on the road so make sure it is 100% safe before doing so. Don't become distracted by passengers or loud music within the car. A lapse in concentration of a couple of seconds can be disastrous. Be courteous towards other road users and treat them the way you would wish to be treated. Mobile Telephones - You are four times more likely to crash if you are using a mobile telephone whilst driving. You cannot concentrate fully on your driving and hold a telephone conversation at the same time. No call or text is worth losing your life for. Place your telephones on silent and into the glovebox, this way you will not be tempted to use it.

16

Hands free kits are legal, however they are still a huge distraction and should be avoided whilst driving. Remember, the human brain isn't fully developed until 25 years of age so already young drivers have a slight disadvantage. Don't risk your and other people's safety further by doing any of the above whilst driving. Have a great summer and enjoy yourselves, but don't let it be spoiled by carnage and heartache. Be responsible. 22. BP INDUSTRY PARTNER: Mrs Prosser (Depute Head Teacher) Excerpt from a BP article highlighting our S1 visits to their Dyce office in May.

400 first year students from Meldrum and Bucksburn Academies recently visited the BP headquarters at Dyce to take a closer look at both the on-shore and off-shore working environments within the oil and gas industry. The programme was managed by a team of 12 volunteers and involved colleagues from the Bruce, Harding, Clair and Magnus assets. Presentations to the pupils were also given on the topic of non-renewable energy, designed to complement the schools’ science curriculum. The highlight of the day for most students was the chance to take part in a live link-up with an off-shore advanced collaborative environment (ACE), and ask questions to those on the asset. Some were keen to learn about leisure time on the rig and asked whether staff are able to play on x-boxes or go to the gym. Other questions were thought provoking, for example “Do you feel safe coming off-shore?” and led to deeply personal answers. As Liz Prosser, Deputy Head at Meldrum Academy explains, “The visits are a great opportunity to see at first hand the vast range of employment opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) and other subjects that are available to young people in this area. Pupils can also hear from employees about the skills and knowledge they need for their chosen career. The programme also offers an insight into the scale of the working environment in the North Sea and indeed anywhere offshore, where may of our pupils’ parents work. The visits also proved to be a big hit with the pupils. Euan Clow, a student at Meldrum, shared his highlight with us: “My favourite part of our visit was when we got to interview Steve on the video chat because it was fund getting to know what he does offshore and all the jobs there are off-shore.” Lynne Staples-Scott, Corporate Responsibility Manager for BP North Sea, explains the importance of the project to BP. “Our education

17

programme focuses on helping young people to see the connections between what they are learning at school and the world of work. Visits such as these, when coupled with the passion and enthusiasm of our staff, are incredibly powerful in encouraging pupils to pursue science and maths at school and university and in stimulating interest in the energy industry.” The success of the project required careful coordination with the four assets, the on-shore team and the schools. As Lynne points out, “Managing visits on the scale of the Bucksburn and Meldrum ones is no small undertaking and I would like to thank everyone who put in time and effort to make them so successful. Through BP's relationship with Meldrum Academy, BP is proud to nominate Alison Mcintosh (5S1) as a torchbearer. Alison is a truly inspirational pupil who has shown incredible strength and achieved tremendous success while coping with great personal sadness. Alison puts 100% into everything she commits to, meeting every deadline and producing school work to the very best of her ability. As a result, she attained excellent grades in her S4 exams. Alison is a very giving person who has a smile for everyone and is a loyal, supportive friend to many pupils. All of Meldrum Academy is behind Alison's torchbearer nomination. She is a ""Grampian Leader"" and a willing volunteer who helps with the delivery of the Active-Schools Programme for primary pupils as well as major Aberdeenshire events. Alison participates widely in extra-curricular and inter-house/school activities including Duke of Edinburgh and jogging, and has used this interest as a means of fundraising for charities”

23. ECO GROUP NEWS: Mrs Catton Eco Group has had a very productive year. Earlier in 2012 several of the Eco Group members travelled to Haddo with P7 pupils from the feeder primaries. We were there to help them learn more about the environment. We assisted them in various activities such as tree planting, bird box making and animal tracking. Each school returned home with 2 new bird boxes that they had built (with a little help from Meldrum’s Eco members) and a wider sense of the world about them. It was very educational for the younger pupils especially as many of them had never realised the sheer quantity of work that goes into maintaining Scotland’s natural beauty. Next, the Litter Pick on 28th April was a huge success with 101 bags of rubbish collected, 9 more than last year! This year the weather was fine, if a little cold, and everybody had a great time. As well as the bags of litter several unusual items such as a fireman’s hose (we are assured that it was not stolen from the fire station), a circular saw and a children’s tent. Overall everyone was enthusiastic and enjoyed the day.

Finally, we in the Eco Group have long had plans for a Sensory Garden in the pipeline. This year, we are finally going to act on these plans. As a first step, we have bought some raised beds and look forward to filling them with beautiful plants that the whole

18

community will enjoy. A group of pupils also spent an enjoyable day at the start of June working on the existing butterfly garden. We are very grateful to everyone who donated the plants that we added to what was already there in the butterfly garden in order to encourage more wildlife to come into the School grounds. 24. ACTIVE SCHOOLS NEWS CONTACT DETAILS: [email protected] Active Schools Football Festival

Congratulations to Meldrum A S1 football team who had us all biting our nails at the Active Schools Football Festival at Kemnay on 13th June. The festival, held as part of National Schools Sports Week was attended by Kemnay, Aboyne, Alford and two teams from Meldrum and it all came down to a penalty shoot out to determine the winner. The final, Meldrum A v Aboyne, finished 0-0 after extra time but Meldrum held their nerve to triumph on penalties.

Looking ahead to next school year, with continued success in mind, there is a particular need for help with football training and team trips. Parents and volunteers would be warmly welcomed if they could help in any way. Please contact Miss Watson in PE if you think you may be able to lend a hand. LEAD 2014 Conference Following on from their attendance at the LEAD 2014 Conference at RGU last term where they took part in practical workshops and discussions to help them plan and deliver festivals for younger children, Meldrum’s Community Sports Leaders helped Active Schools run a Sportshall Athletics event on April 20th. The CSL’s were given a short training session on the events and equipment early in the week by Active School Coordinators before being asked to set up and deliver a fun competition for the 150 youngsters attending on the day. Every P4 pupil from the associated network primary schools came along and took part in events such as javelin, speed bounce, sprints and long jump. Feedback was very positive from both teachers and pupils and it is hoped it can become a part of the annual sports calendar.

19

A big thank you to all the CSL’s without whose help the festival would not have been such a great success. Extra Curricular Basketball Kenny Gibb, Garioch Basketball stepped in to coach the after school basketball sessions through out May whilst senior pupil volunteer Jack Conn was off on exam leave. Jack is now entering 6th year and has committed to coaching our school team for another year contributing greatly to the extra curricular programme within the school. Meldrum Academy are fortunate to have a very strong club locally who provide us with ongoing support, we will continue to link to the club next school year. Pupils interested in going along to club training nights should contact Kenny on 07824518644. Champions in Schools Meldrum Academy was one of two academies in Aberdeenshire chosen by Active Schools to pilot new role model programme Champions in Schools. The innovative programme brings International athletes into the classroom to deliver inspirational workshops on goal setting, nutrition and fitness, and winning attitudes. But although the deliverer is a sporting hero, the message is clear that the lessons learned can be applied to all walks of life; studies, hobbies or everyday tasks. Our Sporting Champion was Craig Harper, former Scottish hockey player who represented the country 30 times. Craig, now a PE teacher in Aberdeen visited Miss Watson’s S1 class three times this term and engaged with the pupils through workshops and fun practical hockey lessons. Pupils were very impressed by his career history, his stories of nerves at European Cup matches and were amazed at the extent of his travels, although he was careful to remind them that all of this came through hard work, dedication and a healthy lifestyle. His career history led on to his 3 workshop topics where he used practical examples to show how appropriate goal setting and a positive mental attitude can help everyone to achieve ambitions and be happy in life. Pupil feedback included “Craig showed me that a positive attitude is the power that drives you to success” “I have learned so much about effort, focus and to try your best” “You must have commitment, self –belief and push yourself in all you do” The programme, funded by Active Schools, was developed by Winning Scotland Foundation. Further information can be found at http://www.championsinschools.com/ Can You Help? Active Schools is always looking for volunteers to help with their after school programme and although Meldrum Academy currently has a comprehensive range of activities including football, hockey, rugby and basketball, we would welcome any new activities. Volunteers would be supported by school staff and training opportunities sourced for all volunteers

20

31. SCHOOL UNIFORM REMINDER: Mr D Martindale (Depute Head Teacher) ‘Successful schools have a strong identity and are proud of their school uniform.’ Meldrum Academy is a school of which we are all very proud. Our school uniform is the result of extensive consultation involving pupils, parents, staff and the wider community. A pride in ‘wearing the school colours’ is one of the cornerstones of identity for a successful school. We hope that all parents and carers will work with us to encourage all of our children to wear a smart uniform with an identifiable crest. We expect all pupils to wear the Meldrum Academy uniform in school and when representing the school across Scotland. Pupils must show the school colours by wearing one of these items of clothing. A) White shirt (S1 to S4) / black shirt (S5 / S6) with Meldrum Academy tie. or one of the following options B) School sweatshirt with Meldrum Academy crest V-necked sweater with a school crest. Fleece/or zipped jacket with school crest worn with a plain polo shirt or plain blouse Or C) White or navy blue polo shirt with Meldrum Academy crest All pupils must wear black or navy trousers/skirt; black or dark coloured shoes or dark coloured trainers. Jeggings and ‘short’ shorts are not appropriate and pupils wearing these in the new session will be seen to be not complying with school uniform policy. S1 – S4 sweatshirts, fleeces and sweaters are blue. The ties are striped on a navy background. S5 – S6 sweatshirts, fleeces and sweaters are black. The ties have a school crest on a black background. The Meldrum Academy Parent Council carried out a tendering exercise to get good quality uniform at affordable prices. 32. PARENT COUNCIL NEWS

PARENT COUNCIL AGM

Dave Marshall in his last meeting as the Chair of the Meldrum Academy Parent Council, gave a round up of a very busy and successful year.

Attendance at meeting has been very strong with over 20 different parents coming along to meetings over the session. The Parent Council has been involved in providing feedback to Aberdeenshire Council and the Scottish Government as part of consultation exercises and representing the parental viewpoint to senior school staff on a range of issues around the Curriculum. The Parent Council gets an in-depth presentation on the school exam results and discusses the school response to this information. We also reviewed the results of the questionnaires that ere completed on the Parental Consultation Evenings. The Parent Council also supported the Online’ Safety Event (CEOP) that reached over 1,000 pupils, parents and staff from the Academy and beyond. CURRICULUM FOR EXCELLENCE UPDATE National Guidance on the curriculum has progressed since January 2012 and this resulted in Aberdeenshire Council issuing Expectations for the Senior Phase in March 2012. These are listed below. Aberdeenshire ELL expectations for Senior Phase – key points

A broad general education to the end of S3 is essential. All schools’ curricular models must reflect this key characteristic covering the range of curricular areas and the accompanying experiences and outcomes.

The Senior Phase begins in S4. This requires a move away from the 2+2+2 approach to a 3+3 approach from S1 to S6. It is the Service’s requirement that all schools will plan and implement on this basis.

EL&L expects that all schools will be ready to implement new national qualifications from session 2013/14. Experiences in the broad general education phase supports transition into the senior phase but should not pre-determine young people’s options for qualifications from S4.

The majority of schools will move to a continued S4-S6 senior phase from session 2013/14. Where any school has particular circumstances to make it very challenging to move to a combined phase in 2013/14, circumstances will be fully scrutinised and discussed. The expectation is that all schools will move to a combined senior phase for session 2014/15.

Whilst all 17 secondary schools’ plans will reflect the needs of their learners and communities, all school’s plans should be consistent with the principles and expectations outlined. No school’s plans should create difficulties for another school in implementing the senior phase.

The EL&L Service will support schools as appropriate. Engagement with staff, parents and pupils is vital. Effective communication is of paramount importance. The support outlined by the Scottish Government is welcomed and will be implemented to ensure schools are ready to begin the senior phase.

Aberdeenshire EL&L also subscribes to the ‘ADES Position Statement on Implementation of Curriculum for Excellence’.

Any interim arrangement will be for one year only and must still comply with the expectations outlined by the service.

28

The implications for Meldrum academy as follows: The current S2 (11-12) who have made their course choices will continue through to

S4 and sit examinations and certification as planned. The combined senior phase will start in Meldrum Academy in session 2014-15. A revised curricular model will be implemented for current S1 (11-12) and incoming

P7. These pupils will make choices of courses (i.e. courses leading to exams and certification) at the end of S3. The combined senior phase will have implications for the number of courses that these pupils can take in S4 (currently eight) and may result in the school considering the configuration of the school day.

The school will consider these issues and incorporate them into the 2012-13 school Improvement Plan. The school staff will meet early in the new session and devise curricular plans that will be subject to consultation involving pupils, parent council, parents and staff. Following this we will build these into our plans for session 13-14 and beyond. The Education Scotland website has further information on the Curriculum Education, Broad General Education, Parentzone and a feedback section called Engage for Education. http://www.educationscotland.gov.uk/index.asp 37. 10th ANNIVERSARY OF MELDRUM ACADEMY Opened in August 2002 our School is now 10 years old. A group of staff, pupils and parents have been meeting to discuss how we should celebrate this. You will have read about the Phil and Aly concert that the Parent Council are organising for the community. Here are some other things that we are planning to do:

Whole School Community Photograph of over 1,000 pupils and staff on 28 August 2012

Open Afternoon, Exhibition and Tour on Friday 4 October and Saturday 5 October 2012. A chance to tour the school, see photographs of the school and meet old friends and make some new ones.

The ECO group will have their plans on show for the new garden at the front of the school.

The newest pupils, S1, in the school will bury a time capsule containing things that reflect in their lives 2012.

The Parent Council will hold the big social event of the year on Saturday 15 September. Commemorative Meldrum Academy whisky (miniatures) will also be on sale.

Staff, pupils and parents will sit and sew together to produce a very special anniversary wall hanging.

We hope that the Meldrum shops and other businesses will join the celebrations and theme their windows on an educational theme.

In the last week before the October we will hold the Meldrum Academy Highland games. The playing field will resound to the skirl of the pipes as the School Houses compete for the Meldrum Academy 10th Anniversary shield.

If you think that you could help in any way please contact the school.

38. A REMINDER ABOUT PUPIL ABSENCE: Mr D Martindale (Depute Head Teacher) As part of an Aberdeenshire scheme designed to monitor absence, we have a facility in school, which allows us to contact you quickly and efficiently. The system is called Seemis Text Messaging. Seemis Text Messaging gives us the ability to send text messages to your mobile phone. We primarily use the system to advise/acknowledge that your child is absent from school. Clearly the use of such a system makes it even more important that you let us know in advance or early in the morning about an absence. Doing so will minimise the inconvenience to you. If you know your child will be absent, you should contact the school by telephone explaining why they are absent and how many days the absence is likely to be for. The school office is open from 8.15am for calls. 39. FINALLY……. Mr Andrew Travis (Head Teacher) I hope that you have enjoyed reading our fourth and final newsletter of the session. It is a time for looking back over a very busy but highly enjoyable session and looking forward to an exciting year ahead. At the start of 2011-12 we set ourselves ambitious goals in pushing ahead with the Curriculum for Excellence and this is a journey that will continue for a number of years. Along the way we will continue to develop our thing about the learning and teaching, courses and subjects and exams. Our ongoing direction is one which will

Improve learning and teaching Raise standards for young people in the school Improve literacy, numeracy and health and well being.

I would like to thank the pupils of Meldrum Academy who have risen to the challenges of the session. A very talented S6 cohort has shown a real pride in Meldrum and has made a real effort to put something back, into their school and into their community. They have not been slow in coming forward to support each other and younger pupils in the school. Over the coming session we will look for more pupils from all years to get involved and make good things happen across the school. As ever, our very talented team of staff; teachers, support staff, technicians, CLD, library and office teams have shown a personal commitment to getting the best from each and every individual pupil. They have been ably supported by parents, carers, local groups and businesses. My thanks go out to everyone who has made this a most successful session. On behalf of all those at Meldrum Academy I hope that you have a great summer and enjoy this time with your family and friends.
