■ When a bubbly from England’sSouth Downs in County Sussex wonthe title of World’s Best SparklingWine at the International Wine andSpirit Competition in 2005, screamsof horror could be heard from somein Champagne across the Channel inFrance, while others shrugged it offas little more than an aberration.

When that same English makerwon the Decanter World WineAwards for Best Sparkling in the Worldin 2010 the reaction from over thewater was somewhat more shocked,and last year when it yet again wonthe International Wine & Spirit Com-petition for World’s Best Sparkling, ithad some of the men of Champagneliterally gagging on their Gauloises’.

And yet the man behind those En-glish successes has no winemakinglineage and is actually a one-timecomputer company owner who, withhis wife, dumped the city rat-race inthe early 1990s to take up a new lifein the country making bubbly wine andenjoying the fruits of their labours withfamily and friends.

And Mike and Chris Roberts, to-gether with their family who now workalongside them, never dreamed ofwhat they’d one day achieve. “Wedidn’t believe it at first,” Mike says oftheir first win in 2005. “Even afterthey’d sent me the confirmation, I rangthe organisers four times to make re-ally sure they had the right winner!”

■ Evans& Tate in the West’s Mar-garet River have long prided them-selves on making their Redbrook la-bel wines only from fruit from the bestof Vintages.

2009 was one such vintage: fromNew Year’s Day the region flourishedunder 4 months of blue skies and tem-peratures in the high twenties, withfruit for the 2009 Redbrook Shirazpicked at the end of this period whenat its optimal ripeness.

Winemaker Matt Byrne fer-mented individual parcels from dif-ferent vineyard blocks separately,racking these to either new or olderFrench oak barriques or hogsheads.“This provided a diversity of optionsfor blending,” Matt said. “Perfect bar-rel maturation was achieved bymatching barrel types to each parcelof fruit and removing the wine fromthe barrel when ideal structure, tex-ture and integration had been achieved– whilst also ensuring fruit characterwas at the forefront of the wine.”

just as important for England as theyare for their family-owned company.Not that they are anti-French – justproudly British – and Mike admits he’sgot the French to thank for some ofhis success: Ridgeview got advice andguidance in its formative years frommakers from Champagne, and plantedclones of French Chardonnay, PinotNoir and Pinot Meunier.

The wine that won England its first“Best Sparkling” award wasRidgeview’s Bloomsbury 2002, andinterestingly it was another English-man, Christopher Merret who gavethe world its very first sparkling wine.

That was way back in 1662 andMr Merret in a paper for the RoyalSociety, described in detail how hecreated such a bubbly drop, summingit up his wine in somewhat British un-der-statement as “gay, brisk and spar-kling.”

Thirty years later France’s DomPerrignon on creating his first bubblyexclaimed more loudly and poeticallyto those around him: “I am drinkingthe stars!”

But it actually took another 40years for the French to get seriousabout what, until the Roberts camealong, has been recognised as the bestbubbly in the world.

Mike Roberts attributes the successof his little Ridgeview Estate – whichmakes around 240,000 bottles of spar-kling wines a year – to a unique geo-graphical factor: France’s Cham-pagne region is largely renowned forthe greatness of its wines because ofits soil that’s basically chalk layeredover clay, and which extends out andunder the English Channel to riseagain 140km away in the SouthDowns of Sussex.

“We’ve this unique soil, we’re just11km in from the sea, our winters aremild, and our summers are dry andactually quite hot,” Mike says. “It’sthe perfect mix for the perfect bub-bly.”

Mike’s assisted in his winemakingby son Simon and winemaker CharlieHolland, while Chris is a working di-rector, daughter Tamara is companyGeneral Manager, Simon’s wifeMardi (an Aussie from Victoria’sWangaratta) is Sales & MarketingManager and son-in-law Simon Lar-der is Supply Chain Administrator.

Ridgeview Estate is open to thepublic Mondays to Saturdays from11am to 4pm (except January andFebruary,) with sales and tastings oftheir sparklings at the Cellar Door. Itwas their 2006 and 2007 RidgeviewGrosvenor that won the 2010 and 2011awards, while their Fitzrovia Spar-kling Rosé was served by Queen Eliza-beth when President Obama visitedBuckingham Palace last year.

You’ll find Ridgeview in Ditchlingin Sussex, an hour south of Londonby train or 1.5 hours by road. Thereare around 60 other wineries in thearea, some open for tastings.

One For Lunch■ Naysayers told Peter Yealandsthe land he’d bought in NewZealand’s Marlborough district wastoo rugged for viticulture, but defy-ing their gloomy forecasts heturned it into some of the area’s firstterraced vineyards.

And he’s not looked back, withhis label now one of Marlborough’smost-respected. Search out his2009 Yealands Reserve SauvignonBlanc, another of those wines pro-duced only in exceptional years,with fruit for this one being hand-harvested to get only the best ex-tra-ripe bunches, and with 35% thengoing into a mix of new and usedFrench oak for 12 months and theremainder into stainless steel tanksbefore blending.

The resultant wine has nicesavoury flavours with a mineral fin-ish, and at $30 is one that its maker,Tamara Washington recommendsmatching with spicy dishes such asThai seafood.
