eSelamat Datang!Melaka Arts and Performance Festival (MAPFest)is an innovative contemporary festival, featuring dance, performance art, visual art, film and music. In a short space of time sinceits inception in 2009, MAPFest has gained ahigh national, and increasinglyinternational profile, being recognised for itsprogram of exciting independent arts, collaborations and its use ofalternative sites forperformance.
Thefestival
draws fromMelaka's
foundation myth, itsfamous heritage sites,
and Melaka's collectiveancestral heritage to create a
space where contemporary culture andartistic practice comes into focus and is
shared across cultural and socio-economicdivides in a three day celebration whichremains free to all.
‘Turning Around’ - transformation throughthe creative drive - remains the centralinspiration for the festival, connecting both tothe foundation myth for Melaka, and thefestival's objective of assisting contemporaryarts to play a role in Melaka's revival alongsideits heritage-driven tourist industry. The specificfocus within that broad theme is in the tracesof transformation.
MAPFest remains free and accessible for all.Continuing Melaka's rich history as a centre formeetings and exchange between cultures, it willcreate opportunities for artists and art lovers toshare in each others' work and perspectives.
We hope you enjoy the festival!
Tony Yap - MAP Creative Director

Eulogy for theLivingEulogy for the Living is a large-scaleperformance, a spectacular andsoulful finale to the festival, directed by Tony Yap, performed byfestival artists. Eulogy for the Living isa kind of devotional work for makingour way in the world, an internaljourney into the memory of body andsoul. Here artists and audiencetransform and reconnect a deeper partof ourselves, within the fleetingtransience of contemporary life. Wethe living both preserve the past andallow things to pass – we eulogiseourselves in each moment. Life goeson...

Ascent /Naik NaikNaik Naik, conceived anddirected by Cheryl Stock, is amulti-site promenadeperformance in which theaudience joins the artists inphysically exploring the notionof ‘ascent’ through theirupward journey from Fort AFamosa at the base of the hillto Site 1 of St Paul’s Hill at thesummit. Beginning at duskwith vignette performancesalong the ascending path, thejourney finishes on enteringthe church ruins at nightfall. An evocation of place throughperformative contemplations, this processional experiencelingers on the traces of historythat remain hidden or partiallyand silently exposed, interwoven with personal andcultural stories related to thesites, in a celebration of thepresent.
Naik Naik brings together eightestablished and emergingprofessional artists whosedisciplines range across dance, music, visual arts and mediaproduction. Excitingly, this willbe the first performance atMAPFest arising from a pre-

Ramon Martinez Mendoza:Treeoid – interactiveinstallation
RamonMartinez Mendoza plays withthe idea of utilizing differentmediums and processes toconnect with communities, without being concerned aboutfinal outcomes and leaving theinteraction between artist andparticipants completely free ofstructures or definitions. Thisconcept forms a key part of hisresearch: A Non-predefinedOutcome (ANPO). Hisinstallations come from anengagement with communitiesand this becomes a symbol ofthe relationship that hedevelops through hisencounters or exchanges.

I am ElevenDirected: Genevieve Bailey - 90 minsDo you remember when you were 11?Australian filmmaker Genevieve Bailey travelledthe world for six years talking with 11-year-oldsto compose this insightful, funny and movingdocumentary portrait of childhood. From anorphanage in India, to a single-parenthousehold in inner-city Melbourne, to bathingwith elephants in Thailand, I AM ELEVENexplores the lives and thoughts of children from15 countries. I AM ELEVEN weaves togetherdeeply personal and at times hilarious portraitsof what it means to sit at this transitional age. These young minds provide us with a powerfulinsight into the future of our world.
These children share their thoughts on a rangeof subjects such as love, war, global warming, music, terrorism, culture, family, happiness, religion and the future. Each of their situationsallows a single glimpse into a young mind, andcombine to provide a powerful insight into thefuture of our world. As straight up andpersonal as the ‘7 Up’ series, and with thecomedy and honesty of ‘Spellbound’, thisdocumentary enables us to explore an agewhere these ‘not quite kids, not quiteteenagers’ briefly linger, between the frankopenness and sometimes naivety of childhood, and the sharp and surprisingly brave wisdomand knowing of adulthood. As much as it is astory about them, it is a story with them, ofwhat it is like to be eleven today.
The Songs They SangDirected by Rohan Spong - 90 minsTHE SONGS THEY SANG is the untold truestory of the amazing musical and artisticperformances that took place at the VilnaGhetto, Lithuania, during WW11, in themidst of the very darkest of persecutions. These performances brought hope and lifeto those in the Ghetto during the horrificattempted genocide of the Jewish people.
As part of this feature lengthdocumentary, these songs and the musicwill be reprised and performed once againby professional musicians, survivors, familymembers of composers who wrote works, and even a Cantor in New York.
In addition to this, Holocaust survivors andfamily members recall their experiences ofGhetto daily life, and discuss the meaningof the musical compositions. The filmcenters on the lyricists Avrom Sutzkeverand Shmerke Kaczerginski, who wrotestartling and poetic eyewitness accountsof Vilna life and helped set them to music. They also risked their life during the war topreserve these writings as record of lifewithin the ghetto.
