you’ve probably heard of curling, played on ice with brooms and a “stone.” but there’s a very different curling game that’s played here in the Milwaukee area. In fact, there are at least three curling clubs in the area that play this different game that is popular and loved by those who play it. originating in bavaria, it was called “eisstock”. It’s played on ice, sometimes inside, sometimes outside. The wilson park club plays indoors year-round and every week at the wilson park Ice Center. and it welcomes new members and players who would like to give it a try. a couple of Vags have already played it. Instead of the large, heavy “stone” that is pushed and then cleared by
players with brooms, this game is played with an “eisstock” that is made of wood, with a steel ring on the bottom to let it slide across the ice once the player lets go of its handle. It then is played somewhat like shuffleboard (on ice). sounds like a lot of fun, and very easy to play. so come and hear Helmut Kopp, leader of the wilson park group, tell about this amazing and fun game that is ready to be “discovered” by newbies to the game. you can see what an eisstock looks like and how to play with it and much more. so don’t miss this fun roundtable. Questions? ron Sonntag, 414-788-4907, or [email protected]. dinner served from 5 pm, so eat while listening.

retrieving and returning balls
How hard can it be to politely retrieve and return tennis balls? Have you ever been hit in the back by a ball being returned, or had a ball slammed at you when it was not in play? so, maybe it isn’t as easy as it might seem. “Here are a few tips on how to retrieve and return balls:
1. return balls nicely to everyone – your partner and your opponents. There is no need to bounce the ball at someone when their back is turned. you don’t win points for that and neither do you make any friends.
2. bounce, hit or toss the ball to the server (or their partner) gently, in their general direction. you don’t have to place it right in their hand but you also don’t have to make people run down balls when it doesn’t count toward points.
3. say something, anything, before you return the ball so the other person, whether it’s your partner or your opponent, knows it’s coming. especially if their back is turned.”
