From the Knight Marshal: In my absence at an official Tues-day night fight practice, any of the following may step in as Marshal in Charge so that scheduled baronial practice may continue with insurance intact:  Adam Steinfelder (deputy KM), Kevin Dowd, James Peck, and Eric Rhude.

The fencers operate on a similar premise. Moresca (Julie DeVuono) is the deputy KM in charge of Rapier. In her absence, any of the following may MiC a Rapier practice: Pete Boullianne, Erik Soto, and Brett Kessler.

Heavy Weapons: Outdoor practices are held at Islip Grange Park on Tuesdays, 7 p.m. An Inter-net search for 88 Broadway Ave., Sayville, NY 11782 will give you a nifty map and directions from your lo-cation. The Marshal would like to remind folks to be prompt. For information call Lisa Soto at (516) 446-8197 before 10 pm. or [email protected].

For those wishing even more swat time, the fighters of Ostgardr continue to meet on Sundays in Brooklyn from noon until about four pm. They meet at Quality Conservation, 140 58th Street, Bldg. A, Unit 8M. The site is indoors - a large warehouse with plenty or room, so even polearms are fine. There is also plenty of park-ing within a fenced and guarded lot. For those taking public transportation, the site is two to three blocks from the R/N train stop at 59th Street. Non-fighters are welcome to attend. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact [email protected]

Archery: Archers can also continue to hone their skills on Tuesday evenings at an indoor range in Hicksville. Contact Pe-ter of Hawkwoods (Pete Farrell) for further information. (631) 754-8977 before 9PM, or [email protected]. Additionally, the Barony is seeking arm guards, finger gloves, youth bows and adult bows 30 lbs. or less to add to our loaner gear. If you have any gear you’d like to donate, please contact Baron Don Jean Xavier, 631-874-2748 be-

fore 10 p.m. or [email protected] with "archery gear" in the subject line. If you have some 7-8 oz. belt leather, Jean Xavier is also willing to give you some basic directions for making your own arm guard.

Arrows and Ales Saturday, September 19, 2009

Hosted by the Barony of An Dubhaigeainn

Fighting, archery, brews and good food! What more could you want from an event? The Barony of An Dubhaigeainn welcomes all good gen-tles to experience the varied talents of our populace, especially our great-est talents, fighting and brewing (drinking takes a close third).

Wax your bow strings, straighten your arrows, and dust off your bow! For archery is strong in the Barony! We will have royal rounds and our 2nd Annual Lord Petrus Memorial shoot. The tournament shoot is open to all. The highest scoring Baronial resident will become the newest Archery Champion for An Dubhaigeainn. The range will open at 11:30 for inspections, practice, and royal rounds. The tournament will begin at 1:30.

For the Rapier fighters there will be a fencing tournament called Schlag-ers and Lagers. This will be a double elimination weapons of choice schlager only tournament. Each fencer is requested to bring a prize re-lated to the theme (prizes may be cheap, fancy bottles preferred, contents will not be questioned). If the fencer is unranked, only one prize is re-quested. If the fencer is a cadet, 2 prizes, if he is a current champion, 3 prizes, if the fencer is a Don, 4 prizes, if the fencer is a Peer, 5 prizes. Winner takes all.

There will be a light day board served throughout the day. Rather than a sit down feast, the evening meal will be served buffet style so that there will be an opportunity to peruse the many brews available for tasting.

Baron Ateño will be running and in charge of judging the brewing com-petitions (It’s good to be the Baron). The categories include; most period recipe, nonalcoholic, and populace choice. That's right, we get to help! For Period competition, all documentation must be included with the en-try. Populace choice judging will be for an hour before din-ner. The brewer will be avail-able with the brew to speak about and serve the brew. The Populace is encouraged to learn about each entry.

For evening entertainment, there will be a bardic competition, fur-ther details to come. Check East Kingdom website!

Pennsic Report: Notes from Pennsic War XXXVIII

by Alissenda la Gailharda Photos by Catrina ab Aqua and Alissenda la Gailharda

For any of you who haven’t yet had the pleasure of attending Pennsic, I can tell you that it is a not to be missed two week long event filled with color, pageantry, music, food and battle. I haven’t even referred to all the parties and classes one can attend. Not to mention shopping. Ok, we won’t mention that. My wallet is still bruised. For that brief fourteen day window, over ten thousand hardy souls get to-gether to enjoy everything the S.C.A. has to offer.

Our land agent, Peter of Hawkwoods, did a phenomenal job. Not only does he represent us in land negotiations with our neighbors, he also coordinates the set up

and infrastructure of our camp. An impressive gate and hand painted sheet wall mark the entrance to our home away from home. Once inside, we all enjoy the baronial common area, complete with a brand new fly, a kitchen area, a fully operational sink and hot water shower big enough to have its own changing room. Of course, many hands make light work in an effort this big. Construction and breakdown are a huge endeavor, and we very much appreciate everyone who helped make the various elements of the common area, set up

From the Chronicler: As some of you may be aware, our very able Deputy Chronicler Hilarivs has returned to school. We wish him every success. His absence, though, leaves us a bit short handed. At the moment, we need a DC who is willing to

help solicit, create and edit content, as well as keep track of mailing the few hard copies of the Viaduct to those mem-bers not on our email list. If you’re interested in helping out, but not sure how you can, please let us know. Don’t

worry about knowing layout or design - you can learn as little or as much as you like. Those interested may sub-mit a Letter of Intent to the Seneschal.I’d also like to renew my request for content from the populace. We’re interested in artwork, photos, articles, book reviews, interviews, and anything else you think might enhance our enjoyment of the S.C.A. Of course, we give attribution for all your original work. We’re also interested in letters to the editor...or Chronicler, as it were. Send all submissions to [email protected]. Thank you!

and/or stayed to the bitter end to lend a hand with breakdown. While camp fees serve to defray the cost of all our camp ‘luxuries’, we can always use more assistance with the physical side of things. A huge thank you to all those who were able to lend us a hand. Names are too numerous to mention individually, but you know who you are and we love you! Vivat!

It’s called a War because there are...battles! The River Battle, The Gate Battle, The Woods Battle and all the in-dividual rapier, archery, thrown and heavy weapons tournaments are a large rea-son Pennsic attracts so many people year after year. Once again the brave warriors rep-resenting our Barony of An Dubhaigeainn fought with honor. Our beloved Barony joined the grand forces of the Wetlands Al-

liance, accompanied by the fighters of Three Skulls who had vowed themselves to the Coronet for the war.  Also hailing from within our borders, Surtr’s Brood made good measure of themselves and won much honor. The War was fought in two parts. First, the traditional East (and allies) fought Midrealm (and allies), and then the East & Midrealm joined forces to take on the Known World Alliance. When the dust had settled, the East had vanquished Midrealm and in turn, the Known World Al-liance beat the Mid-East Alliance. On the more convivial end of things, the merchant areas were not only a constant source of temptation, but also a wonderful backdrop for artisans to demonstrate their skills. On the day I was there, there were demonstrations of pewter casting, period embroidery and historical carpentry, among others.

No Pennsic report would be complete without mentioning the all night celebration called Midnight Madness. On Wednesday of War Week, the entire merchant area becomes a torch lit festival of street per-formers, musicians and dancers while eager shoppers snap up the bargains offered. The last few years have

Pennsic Report continued...been graced with a full moon during War Week, and this year was no ex-ception. It was a magical night filled with laughter and song as we all stepped into the giant medieval block party.

The classes and A&S exhibits were exceptional this year, which is only fitting as Pennsic 38 was billed as ‘Torchlight on the Arts’. Classes were

held on myriad subjects, from applying modern science to determine the cause of The Great Plague of 1348 to discussions of Skaldic poetry. History, weaponry, literature, herbalism, dance and all manner of handcrafts were taught. Many of the classes are led by members who are teachers and professors in mundane life. It’s like getting college level courses included at no ex-

tra charge!

Back at camp, Baronial Court was filled with happenings. Several honors were awarded including scrolls to House Three Skulls from

both our own Coronet and the Crown. We wish House Three Skulls continued suc-cess in their never ending battle with the great sea monster, Nostromo. Addition-

ally, both Lady Sorcha and Peter of Hawk-woods were honored for their tireless service while at camp. If I missed anything, I apologize. Things got a bit muddled when Baronial Court was interrupted by a visit from the Crown’s emissary summoning Mistress Suzanne Neüber de Londres to Kingdom Court to be awarded the Pelican!

Mistress Suzanne Neüber de Londres awarded the PelicanIn case you’re new to S.C.A. peerage awards, the Order of the Pelican is given to members who have shown outstanding devotion to service in the S.C.A. Mistress Suzanne cer-tainly fits the bill. Officer, autocrat, feastocrat, brewer, teacher and expert needlewoman are only a few of the hats she wears. She’s always one of the first to arrive and last to leave at events, and one of the most welcoming people to newcomers, helping them learn the ropes. After being attired in her magnificent presen-tation garb, Mistress Suzanne made her way to East Kingdom Court where she was elevated once again to the Peerage, with much pomp and ceremony. (Mistress Suzanne is already a Laurel.) Our own Baron Ateno spoke in support of her honor to great effect.

Welcome back from Pennsic! We have been home for about three weeks now. The laundry is dry and the tent folded carefully for the next use. There is no way we can thank everyone who helped out. It’s a combined effort to make the time together enjoyable, so thank you all. A special congratulations to Mistress Suzanne de Londres for being elevated into the Order of the Pelican at Pennsic East Kingdom Court! We have all ‘suffered’ the post Pennsic blahs when all we want to do is stay in with our families and enjoy the comforts of technology. But as the weather turns cool, there are lots of events on the calendar. We, as your Baron and Baroness, have quite a schedule ahead and would love for you to join us. First, we will be attending ‘John Barleycorn’ in Ostgardr on Sept. 12th. It is a nice site with plenty to do during the day. Of course we will attend ‘Arrows and Ales’ on Sept. 19th and expect everyone to be there! Then, there is a new event this year called ‘River War’. Come out with us and assist our Wetland Alliance ally, the Barony of Iron Bog, to defend against attack from the Barony of Bhakail. It is a three day event (Sept. 25-27) and we encourage eve-ryone to read the event announcement on the East Kingdom website to see how you can help your Barony and our alliance. Next, we will witness the Coronation of Konrad and Brenwen at Concordia of the Snows on October 3rd. So we will be busy the next few weekends! If any of you plan to attend any of the out of area events, please let us know; we like to plan ahead. Finally, a special hello goes out to the newest member of the Barony, Squeakale of Hawkwoods. In Service,

A Special Thank YouUnto the populace on An Dubhaigeainn, greetings and heartfelt gratitude. Thank you to all those who partici-pated and added to the making of a memorable induction into the Order of the Pelican. A special thank you to Baroness Gianetta for the wonderful dress she created for me with the assistance of Gerta, Lady Sorsha, Alis-

senda, Daria and the Honorable Lady Ysabeau. Thanks to Baron Daniel de Cavallo of Coppertree for his design of “pelican in piety surrounded by a laurel wreath”, Duquessa Isabella’s embroidery and her apprentice Baron

Christos’ execution of the cloak, and Lady Daria for the beautiful cap of maintenance. Thanks, too, to my Mistress Gwenhwyfar and Lord Tiberius for the painted silk war banner. To all the speakers whose words made me cry,

though luckily not too much. My husband, Lord Thoroff, who brought the chicken wings so that we could nour-ish ourselves while waiting to be called before Their Majesties. And my brother, Baron Sean, who hosted a

lovely reception after court.  I could go on and on, but will refrain, and will apologize if I forgot anyone.

Thank you all again for your generosities, it is what the SCA is all about. Vivat!

Yours in Service,Mistress Suzanne Neüber de Londres
