Last week staff and students at Chinchilla State School farewelled our Instrumental teacher, Mrs Kellie McKensey as she begins her maternity leave this week. Kellie has been an integral part of forming our wonderful instrumental music program over the past ten years. Thank you Mrs McKensey for your ongoing dedication to instrumental music education in our school and wider community. We wish you and Mr McKensey all the very best as you become parents. Miss Danielle Harris will continue to run our instrumental music program.

Your child learns so much when you spend time with them. Even with a busy schedule, you can turn a little bit of time into a learning experience for your child. Try these tips to get more out of your time together.
Praise
Praise your child for the things they learn and achieve. This will help with their self-esteem and confidence. Try using ‘descriptive praise’ – tell your child exactly what it is that you like about what they have done. For example, ‘Thanks for packing your schoolbag this morning, well done.’ or ‘It’s great how you worked out that tricky word yourself!’
Encourage
Praise your child for their effort too, not just when they achieve something – ‘You were really concentrating when you were reading today. Well done!’ You can also encourage your child before and during activities. For example, ‘Show me how you can count by fives’ or ‘Keep going – you’ve nearly finished the story!’ Praising effort can encourage your child to try hard in the future, and helps them to see themselves as learners who can master new things.

Time with your child – make it count!
Learning to self-regulate our emotions is an important life skill and one that Chinchilla State School encourages through our Zones of Regulation program. This week’s tip focuses on an easy breathing technique. Knowing how to breathe also helps us to control our emotions and fears to keep a clear and sharp mind. If our breathing is deep, slow and regular then our mind will reach a state of tranquility and calm. When we are upset or stressed our breathing becomes quick and shallow. Breathing deeply and slowly instantly calms us down mentally as well as physically.
Concentrating on our breathing, also helps us to live in the present and feel alive. Very often our mind is thinking about something while our body is doing something else, as a re-sult, our mind and our body are not unified. With breathing exercises, inhaling and exhaling, we bring our mind and body to work together because both are focused on the same thing.

2020 Annual Implementation Plan (AIP)
ACHIEVEMENT WELLBEING TEAMS
Throughout the school you will see posters that highlight the three big ticket items for Chinchilla State School in 2020. You will see that this year our focus continues to be on reading as well as improving results in English, Maths and Science. Throughout the year students will be creating personal goals as well as receiving feedback to help improve their results.
Wellbeing follows on from last year with the continued use of Zones of Regulation as well as implementing more mindful practices such as meditation and the introduction of Restorative Practices.
Our Teams focus is on attendance in 2020 and our target is to increase overall attendance to 92% or above.
The full version of the AIP including goals, targets, actions, timelines and accountable officer is attached for your reading. If you have any further questions or want more information please talk to your classroom teacher or see any of the Leadership Team. We value your support and together we can make this happen.
School Review
From the 3rd-5th March (Week 6) the school will be participating in a school review. This process occurs once every four years and it is an opportunity to find out about how the school is progressing and future directions. During the review the reviewers talk to staff, students, parents and community members. Generally the reviewers will catch parents before school or after school. Please take the opportunity to chat and provide your opinions on Chinchilla State School. After the review I will share with you the report and the recommendations.
Super Effort!
Congratulations to the students who competed last night in the District Swimming Carnival at the Chinchilla Aquatic Centre. Also good luck to our students who are representing our district at the Regional Basketball trials in St George.

A Sizzling Start to 2020!! Deal or No Deal? That is the ques-
tion.
5/6A have amazed with their incredible writing talent in the
first few weeks of 2020. They have had fun writing sizzling
starts to their stories. The students have identified the Suc-
cess Criteria of a Sizzling Start. They know that a great start
starts in the action, it is dramatic and includes the main char-
acter. A start that gets the reader’s attention can be very
short – maybe just one word or a line of dialogue. They know
that using short sentences creates excitement. AND a siz-
zling start cannot give away the ending. Here are some Siz-
zling Starts that make you want more – They are a definite
DEAL!
“Charge!” Said the mini-man riding a chicken. All the chick-
ens charged towards the other chickens. This was a war for
truth, justice and the barnyard. By Emmett Heath
As the fire ignited, the flames shot to the sky. “BOOM!” Then
it happened. By Hayley Whyte
Drip! Drip! Drip! I hear the water dripping inside and the
creaks of the wooden frames holding the tunnel up. I step
forward it creaks again. I have to go in. I take one more step
and then it. By Bree Adam
It all began when someone left the window open. I woke to a
loud crash and rolled over to look at my alarm clock. 3:43am.
By Hannah Johnson
A dark chill ran down my back as I stared at the sign. I
grabbed a boot and tossed it up. A portal opened beside me.
By Dean Harland
One stormy night when all the shops were closed, I heard a
rustle in the wind and a scream in the distance. By Alofa
Iosefa
And many more
While further refining our writing techniques, each student
produced a wanted poster. The poster encouraged them to
work on descriptions and enabled us to learn just a little more
about each other. It was great fun to share them with our par-
ents at the Meet the Teacher Night.
What remarkable writers we have in 5/6A!! I can’t wait to
read their fascinating stories and to be persuaded and
informed through the cleverness of their writing techniques.
This week’s value: Safety This week’s rule: I act safely in and around the toilets Chinchilla State School is committed to providing a safe, supportive and respectful learning environment for students and staff, where students learn. Each day, students have opportunities to engage in quality learning experiences and acquire values supportive of their lifelong wellbeing. This week the students will participate in an activity to heighten the awareness of the need to keep our school environment clean. They will be exploring our Responsibility Value: Using the toilet facilities correctly. Chinchilla State School’s P&C Association supports the PBL program in the school.

To ensure staff and administration personnel are available for discussion, it is necessary to make an appointment. Should you wish to speak to members of the Administration team, please make your first call the front office. Appointments should be made to speak to the Principal to ensure that he is available and that your discussions will not be interrupted. Before School: Children must use marked crossings on the way to school and obey the crossing supervisors. Verandas, ramps, stairs and classrooms are out of bounds. As we approach week 4, we have some students preparing for their District Basketball representation in Roma on Wednesday. Our boys and girls have been training hard and will get their shot in front of their parents and selectors. This week, we also have District Cricket trials on Monday and District Swimming trials on Tuesday so for some of us it is a big week.
Bree Adam is one of the students who is in for a massive week, she is training for Basketball on Monday, Tuesday evening Swimming trials, Wednesday a trip to Roma and then on Friday she represents the Region at the State Aquathlon in Hervey Bay.
As a school, we wish all of the students who have big weeks the best of luck and we look forward to hearing about your success. District representation is an honour and this year it is mandatory that payments to the school are up to date in order for your children to participate.
