AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS GERALDTON AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS MULLEWA meet the award nominees: CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR LOCAL HEROES WHO HAVE BEEN NOMINATED FOR THE 2018 AUSTRALIA DAY ACTIVE CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARDS COMMITTEE VOLUNTEERS BUSHFIRE BRIGADES KATE BOX Kate has made a large impact on the local community by devoting her time to families who have been affected by cancer. She has organised many large scale events to raise money for families suffering financial impact due to loved ones undergoing cancer treatment. ROSS NEWMAN Ross volunteers his time as the Chairman of the Combined Equestrian Club. Every July the Club holds the three- day Show Jumping Classic, which attracts over 200 competitors from all across WA. With thanks to Ross and other volunteers – the event is always extremely well run. KIM THOMPSON Kim volunteers his time to re-orientate senior patients on the hospital ward. He does everything from reading newspapers, talking/reminiscing, helping with group therapy activities and gentle walking. Kim always has a happy, bright disposition. MIKE FRANCIS Mike undertakes a variety of work at the Geraldton Surf Life Saving Club including: Director of Education Acting Patrol Captain/ Patrolling Member; founding member of the Midwest Wesfarmer Emergency Response Team - Jetski Rescue and GSLSC Call out squad. WENDY MACDONALD Wendy is an integral part of the Cruise Ship Welcome Group and attended all eight ship visits in 2017. Wendy is always willing to put her hand up to take on more responsibilities and always does so with a smile on her face. CHARMAINE TREZONA Charmaine is an active member for all Cruise Ship Welcomes and has proved herself to be a reliable team player who is always keen to take on new opportunities. She has put her hand up to develop herself in the tourism industry in many ways. LORRAINE BOWEN Lorraine has spent the last five years initiating and running a new scout group and has now built it up to four thriving units. Lorraine has a long term vision and puts in the hard yards to make this vision a reality. MARK TEALE Mark has recently been appointed the Brigade Captain of the Waggrakine Bush Fire Brigade. Mark’s commitment to the cause has seen him effectively balance the brigade, work, and family commitments. He is a passionate leader with an approachable nature. JACK MILBY Jack volunteers his time to assist in the youth development of the Waggrakine Volunteer Bushfire Brigade Cadet Unit. His hard work has culminated in the cadets attending the Australian Fire Cadet Championships at Myuna Bay in NSW. SIMONE MAHONEY Simone works with at-risk youth in the Midwest to ensure they are supported, achieving their goals and staying out of the justice system. Simone is humble, professional, passionate and never seeks recognition for the work she does. PETER TREHARNE Peter does a variety of work in the region for Youth Development Services, actively encouraging those around him to realise their goals, big or small. He is passionate about his work, spending time helping youth in the region and volunteering in his spare time to help those in need. EMMA JACKSON Emma strives to be the best she can for the benefit of others, while bringing passion and dedication to all the activities she undertakes. She applies herself with an energy and enthusiasm that is contagious and supports and inspires others to get involved in the community. JESSICA MULLER Jessica has been involved with Tracking Dogs Geraldton for the past three years, dedicating her time to training sessions, demos and community events. She is also an active member with the Junior Firefighters. She is a valued member of the team who loves helping out. DOREEN HOWELLS Doreen voluntarily runs an inclusive youth theatre program through Theatre 8 Geraldton. It is accessible to children from all walks of life as fees are kept to an absolute minimum. She volunteers her time daily to the Theatre and makes sure everyone has a fair go. IAN BEARD Ian wears many hats, including Communications Officer for Volunteer Marine Rescue WA and Geraldton Volunteer Marine Rescue Group. No task is ever too big for Ian, as a keen and devoted community member who will always go the extra mile. MARGARET DAWSON Margaret volunteers her time during the weekend to collect rubbish in Cape Burney. She is often picking up harmful litter such as plastic waste from the beaches and roads in the area, helping the environment and the community. ROBERT (BOBBY) PEPPER Bobby goes above and beyond in his capacity as Aboriginal Police Liaison Officer, putting his own time and resources into building relationships within Geraldton and the wider Midwest. Bobby was also nominated for a WA Police Award in October 2017. HEATHER CUPITT Heather is an energetic 75-year-old woman who dedicates many hours each week to teaching Bridge to learner players. Heather undergoes considerable research as well as providing help as much as possible. GERALDTON SENIORS WEEK COMMITTEE (QEII) The Geraldton Seniors Week Committee are five hardworking seniors who organise an action packed week of events for seniors in the Midwest. QEII CENTRE VOLUNTEERS The QEII Centre volunteers dedicate over 1600 voluntary hours each year at the QEII Centre running the various programs that the Centre offers. MIDWEST CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME YOUTH COMMITTEE Since its inception the youth-led committee has made an outstanding contribution to the community. TENINDEWA PROGRESS ASSOCIATION Members of the TPA have been proactive in preserving the history of their area. They have created a fantastic user friendly website recording historical information, it also encourages current and previous community members to contribute their memories. TENINDEWA Progress Association GERALDTON TURF CLUB COMMITTEE The Geraldton Turf Club usually holds 19 meetings between October and April and the course brings many visitors to town. WAGGRAKINE VOLUNTEER BUSHFIRE BRIGADE CADETS This year the Cadets were successful in gaining a place to compete in the 2017 Australian Fire Cadet Championships. CASEY TUNBRIDGE Casey has volunteered as a steward at Mullewa Show for over six years. After learning from a more experienced steward she is now taking full responsibility for running a competition section. GLENN BRYANT Glenn volunteers his time to the Mullewa Community in many ways; he is a member of the Mullewa Sports Club, Bowling Club and until recently Chairperson of the CRC. His business donates to all community events. He shows genuine compassion and concern for community members’ mental health. ADRIAN COMEAGAIN Adrian coached the Mullewa Football Club to a Grand Final victory in 2017. He was instrumental in restoring pride in the club and inspiring the community. He is a great role model for local youths. KIM KEEFFE Kim has shown passion and commitment for our community for over 40 years with his dedicated involvement in the OLMC School Board, Mullewa Ag Show, Sports Club, Tennis Club, Golf Club, Community Group & Farm Committee. He was a Shire of Mullewa Councillor for four years. He is a proven leader and gets the job done. JULIE FREEMAN Julie dedicates her time to a number of volunteer roles. She is the Secretary of the Mullewa District Agricultural Society and also active on the committee of the Mullewa Community Resource Centre. JUDY CRITCH Judy has been a dedicated and committed contributor to the Mullewa community in many ways for over 40 years. Judy has enhanced our community by holding office bearer positions and being actively involved with; Autumn Round-Up, Anglican Church, Ag Show, Cubs, Craft Group, Tennis Club, Basketball Club and Golf Club. CGG BUSHFIRE BRIGADES Bush fire service volunteers protect the City through fire prevention and risk management, fire suppression and fire safety education.

    BUSHFIRE BRIGADES
