As chairperson of Breast without spot a non-governmental organisation she has spearheaded the following: v Collaborating with a major Research Centre in Houston Texas to produce a proposal for a study to look at pre-menopausal women suffering breast cancer to understand incidence, impact, predisposition, genetic, and dietary. Same study will also look at oestrogen resistant breast cancer as it appears to be common in Nigerian women too. Proposal is to be completed and submitted in June. Through Breast without spot Prof Ifeoma Okoye has done the following o Collaborated with a government agency (National Youth Service Corps) to use post university students doing national service on the NYSC programme (a one year mandatory service enforced by govt) to Set up a team of foot ‘soldiers’ whose goal is to work on community advocacy at a personal level and impact behaviour change by targeting both men and women as well as school going children. o Developed a training manual for training of these Foot Soldiers (an army of advocates). The manual dwells on passing information on what Cancer is lifestyle changes for prevention and reducing risk, and details on Breast, Cervical and Prostate cancer and Case studies in order to teach the impact of untreated late disease on morbidity and mortality factors. So far we have trained over 5,500 of these youth corpers as cancer prevention advocates. Other advocacy tools produced by BWS include BSE posters and public health information leaflets on BSE and Cervical Cancer which are also used during community awareness sessions o These Foot soldiers are subsequently posted to the different communities (Called Local government areas), to sustain awareness on cancer prevention and screening, to teach BSE to as many women and men (for 70% of breast lumps are spouse detected), and to plant cancer prevention clubs in the secondary schools) o Building Medical Teams in States and Communities -Partnerships with healthcare providers so as to § Establish a referral navigation system to ensure timely referrals § Get them to also perform routine breast examination to their patients and also teach their patients to perform them (PCPs Gynaecologists & nurses) § Sustain regular cervical and prostate cancer screening o Developing Systematic Cancer control centres in collaboration with either LG or state health policy makers o Partnered BWS activities with other established NGOs in areas where these are well set up (e.g. Maria Sams in Lagos – by a survivor who have established medical teams for screening as well as helping to raise funding for treatment of the disease, COPE in Lagos to impact more effectively through media, Mana Foundation by the First lady of Adamawa, WLCF (Women Life Care Foundation) in Enugu who conduct the capacity building for VIA Cervical screening and the screening for BWSs, Prompt Healthcare, Ego Bekee Cancer Foundation, ‘Stand upto Cancer Niger’ and Medicaid foundation all in Abuja , and ‘Cancer awareness’ in Owerri Imo state and several others, as well as professional groups like ‘The Nigerian Medical Association, Medical Women Association, Association of Medical Students and West African College of Nurses – Nigerian Chapter ) to synergize efforts in tackling the disease

It is a Faith Based Organization that reach people through holistic approach. I have implemented several local as well as international projects successfully. In year 2010 I successfully implemented the Global Cancer Awareness Campaign, and in the year 2011 the Cancer Life Celebration for Kids Year 2011.

The focus of both, my scientific and routine work, had been oncology since 1975. In 1987 I was specialising in functional imaging, improvements of tumor diagnostics and therapy management of oncological patients. I like to provide some information about the DKFZ. The German Cancer Research Center is the leading cancer research center and performs research using cutting edge technology at a high international standard. This has been proven by the Nobel prize of 2008, which was received from Prof. Harald zur Hausen, the former head of the center. DKFZ is the national cancer research institute congressionally financed and is leading the academic cancer research in Germany. The Medical PET Center localized in the heart of DKFZ initiated the application of PET in oncology more than 20 years ago and it was one of the first PET Centers in the world operating two PET scanners at that time. During the past decades I have been focusing on studies mainly for monitoring chemotherapy of tumor patients with dynamic PET (dPET) and parametric imaging, and the correlation of dPET with molecular biology, especially based on the use of specific radiopharmaceuticals and gene array data. Furthermore, the design of new radiopharmaceuticals based on in silico modeling techniques is performed since several years and five new tracers are currently in development.

International Experience: I am writing in support of the nomination of Prof. Raphael Catane as a member of the UICC Board of Directors. I have known Prof. Catane for about 15 years. We met while he served as Director of the Institute of Oncology, Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem. Our meetings revolved around supporting Jordanian and Palestinian oncologists via training programs and collaborative research projects. Thereafter, I have been visiting his Institute of Oncology at the Sheba Medical Center, the leading medical center in Israel; bringing with me foreign diplomats in order to present them with what we would consider a center of excellence in oncology. Having visited multiple cancer institutes worldwide, I can proudly attest that the institute that Prof. Catane has been leading for the past 20 years would merit a position in most medical centers in North America and Western Europe which are considered to be in the top 10%. Regarding his academic activities, his curriculum vitae (enclosed) clearly demonstrates dedication to clinical and basic research. Many of his publications are considered significant and were published in the more critical journals (all together, 178 publications). At the national level Prof. Catane has demonstrated that he is an excellent clinician, organizer and leader and has a high curiosity about public affairs. Prof. Catane has served as the Chairman of the Israel Society of Clinical Oncology and Radiotherapy since 2005. He is an amicable and considerate person who relates to people very well. Internationally, Prof. Catane (Full Professor at the Tel Aviv University) has been an active member of ASCO for the past 9 years and since 2009 has served as the Chairman of the International Development and Education Award Task Force at ASCO. Prof. Catane was the Founder and Chairman of the ESMO Palliative Care Working Group during the years 1999-2006, and has been serving as the Chairman of the ESMO Ethics Committee since 2008. His vast national and international responsibilities and experiences, which were all carried out in a most successful way, indicate Prof. Catane's qualifications to serve on the Board of a distinguished organization such as the UICC. His greater maturity, motivation and insight are evident in many areas of cancer treatment, prevention, awareness and advocacy. During the course of his career, Prof. Catane spent five years in the United States, four of which were at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD, which exposed him to modern cancer research including Therapy Evaluation and drug research, which are so relevant for many countries today, especially in the developing world. Prof. Catane not only set up an outstanding Oncology Institute, but has been actively involved in international affairs in the United States and Europe. The latter is in addition to what we would describe as a heavy administrative responsibility. Among the outstanding characteristic qualities of Prof. Catane is his constant search for new ways to improve the quality of his clinical activities. He has attended a diversity of meetings, workshops and conferences, not only to keep abreast of the current work, but to get acquainted with the newest protocols, techniques and the more sophisticated new equipment. I am confident that Prof. Catane will contribute significantly to the UICC's future goals and objectives by joining its Board of Directors.

Marilyn Gentry is one of the founding members of the WCRF global network. Under Marilyn’s leadership, the WCRF global network is responsible for helping transform public opinion that cancer is simply a matter of genetics or bad luck. In the early 1980s when Marilyn began her work, nobody spoke about cancer being a preventable disease and ours was a lone voice. Today, thanks to Marilyn’s vision and determination, she leads a thriving global network of cancer charities that collaborate with key institutions and organisations around the world to promote science-based changes to reduce cancer risk. It was Marilyn’s visionary thinking which led to the development of three evidence-based, global Expert Reports on food, nutrition, physical activity, body fatness and cancer. As a result, millions of people across the world are now aware that cancer is largely preventable, and that there are positive steps everyone can take to help reduce their risk. Marilyn has experience of many global partnerships and initiatives. Over the last three decades she has attended leading global for a, such as United Nations and World Health Organization meetings. In the past, the WCRF network members and/or WCRF International have, under Marilyn’s leadership, partnered or collaborated on projects with varied entities, including FAO, INCA, UNICEF, WHO, PAHO, the Hong Kong Department of Health, as well as national organisations such as Breast Cancer Care in the UK, just to name a few. In addition, every year the WCRF global network supports the UICC World Cancer Day by ensuring we have an internationally coordinated response across our network. Marilyn shares UICC’s goal of eliminating cancer as a life-threatening disease for future generations. She has inspired the WCRF global network to become a leading international player in the vital area of cancer prevention research, health information and policy. Our network’s commitment to funding scientific research into the links between lifestyle and cancer, to positively influencing key decision-takers around the world, and to giving people the information they need to make informed choices is testament to Marilyn’s drive and dedication to a future free from cancer. The UICC Board would be enriched by the energy, motivation and wealth of experience that Marilyn would bring to help the organisation achieve its goals. As Marilyn has continued her crusade to ensure that the public is made aware of the diet and cancer prevention link, and that governments, individuals, and workplaces take responsibility for actions to prevent cancer, her international policy work has come to the fore. Marilyn represented the WCRF global network and cancer prevention by attending the United Nations High-Level meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases in New York in September 2011. This represented a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to mobilise the world to take action to reduce rates of cancer and other NCDs. WCRF International also chaired an expert working group on nutrition, physical activity and NCD prevention on behalf of the NCD Alliance in support of activities around this event. Under Marilyn’s leadership, the WCRF global network is committed to promoting and supporting the resulting Political Declaration. Marilyn has a well-earned reputation for her integrity and for standing firm to her principles. Again and again in the history of the WCRF global network, Marilyn has made the tough decisions and influenced our staff to make the right choices to take our mission further. She is a wonderful and inspiring leader, who motivates our team of 130 people around the world with her dedication and commitment to WCRF’s mission. Marilyn is a team player and has a keen attention to detail. She is truly an international citizen—calling both the USA and the UK home. Marilyn has the full backing of WCRF International in this endeavour and is committed to making the time to attend meetings, fundraise, and otherwise help to ensure the work of the UICC board leads the organization. I cannot think of a more ideal representative for your board.

My involvement in tobacco and cancer control control goes back to around 1995, when together with other colleague (Ronaldo Luna, M.D.) founded the department of prevention at the National League against Cancer, and started an intense and organized work for tobacco control through public education and developing activities to influence and provide technical and scientific advisory to national institutions in order to promote and properly orient their activities in this area. At that time, the National League against Cancer became a member of the International Union against Cancer (UICC), and a few years later I was elected to be a member of the Executive Council of UICC, position that lasted for four years, and permitted to obtain full cooperation of this organization for the work being developed in Guatemala, for tobacco control and other areas of cancer prevention. In 1998 I became Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Landivar University in Guatemala, and from this position it was possible to obtain a generous financial cooperation from the American Cancer Society, to continue and expand the work for tobacco control in Guatemala. Around the year 2000, with the technical cooperation of the Pan American Health Organization, we founded the “National Council for Tobacco Control”, with the participation of 15 institutions, including Universities, NGO´s dedicated to cancer and cardiovascular prevention and care, Ministries of Health and Education, PAHO, and others. This council was very active in lobbying the National Congress, first for the approval of the International Framework Convention for Tobacco Control, and later for the approval of the law of “Tobacco free environments”. Since 2005 I am coordinator of the Division of Tobacco Control at One Voice against Cancer. That same year we applied and received two grants from the “Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids”, one in support of the actions to have the law for “Tobacco free environments” approved, and the other to support studies, actions and lobbying for a law to include pictograms in all tobacco packages. This law is now being discussed at the National Congress. Also, around 2006, with the financial cooperation of the American Cancer Society, we organized a Central American workshop, to promote and support the creation of national groups for tobacco control in the Central American countries; and later visited El Salvador and Nicaragua to work with groups interested in this matter. At present time we are working for the creation of a National Network for Tobacco Control (RENACTA: Red Nacional para el Control del Tabaco), have created a web page at One Voice against Cancer, with one section dedicated to tobacco control, and participate in multiple national activities with the Ministry of Health, other government institutions and many educational establishments for tobacco control. In addition to tobacco control, I have also worked intensely on cancer prevention, having collaborated on the UICC manual for cancer prevention as one of the authors, and have trained many groups on cancer prevention. I believe this is one of the cornerstones of public health, as well as a priority for Guatemala and other developing nations. My pathology training gives me a omplementary background in the cancer control field. My past experience as an active member of the National Cancer League allows me a good insight into the needs of cancer hospitals are them public or private.

[email protected] Under Dr. Bal’s leadership in the State of California, where he served as the Chief of the Cancer Control Branch within the Department of Health Services for over two decades, some of the most innovative, globally recognized public health policies were established. With the advent of Proposition 99, which added a $.25 tax on each package of cigarettes sold in California, he became responsible for implementing California’s tobacco control efforts. This tobacco use prevention and cessation program is one of the largest of its kind in the world and has been universally acclaimed for its innovations and effectiveness. He is the founder/director of California’s Tobacco Control and Obesity Control efforts. His branch budget was in excess of 250 million dollars. In this role, Dr. Bal also had leadership and oversight of the California Cancer Registry, the Cancer Prevention and Nutrition Program, the Cancer Detection Section and Tobacco Control Section, the Cancer Planning, Research and Disparities Program, and the Skin Cancer Program. Over the past two decades, he has had a long-standing and close association with the National Cancer Institute. In addition to having been the Principal Investigator on a major NCI grant, he has served on numerous NCI advisory groups, work groups, PRG’s and study sections (including as Chairman). He has a good working relationship with individuals at every level of NCI and has been a co-author and reviewer on several scientific Surgeon General’s and NCI Reports. Dr. Bal has worked extensively on Cancer Prevention, Control, and Research with many other organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the California Endowment, and others. He has been a reviewer of scientific reports on cancer prevention, control, and research, for the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and has testified at their hearings. He is well published in the medical literature, especially in the area of cancer. He is a frequent scientific reviewer for the Journal of the American Medical Association, Cancer, and other medical journals. He is also a sought after international speaker on cancer. Dr. Bal has also played instrumental planning roles in major global conferences, including the World Conference on Tobacco OR Health, where global leaders and experts convene to advance the fight against tobacco. Within the American Cancer Society, over the past 31 years, Dr. Bal has held every conceivable office for which physicians qualify, including service as our National President (2000-2001). He has chaired the Prevention Committee at ACS National, the Professional Education Committee in California Division, the Committee on Cancer and the Underserved at ACS National, and the Scientific and Medical Affairs Committee at ACS National. He has over the years worked effectively at the grassroots, state, and national levels, and been the President of the Sacramento Unit, the California Division, and most recently has been our National President for this past year (2000-2001.) He is very knowledgeable about cancer prevention, control and research at the national level and has represented the Society at many national and international forums. He is an accomplished speaker who has the ability to make some of these complex cancer control issues user-friendly for even lay audiences.

I would summarize my international experience from two aspects; First: academic experience and second NGO experience Academic experience: I spent two years at MD Anderson Cancer Center as a Fullbright Scholar, I have involved in many international events and projects during the last 30 years at Hacettepe University. I have been members of professional organizations including SIOP, ASCO, AACR and others. I organized Cancer Registry panel and also chaired sessions at SIOP meetings. I represented Hacettepe University in many international events and recently coordinated the relation of the University with a US institution and R&D agreement. I had served as the director of Oncology Hospital and Oncology Institute and involved at international relations of this organizations more than 10 years. NGO experience UICC involvement: I have been working very closely with UICC and served at Membership committee (member, then chair), Strategic coordiationg committee, strategic advisory committee, Task force for Auspices (chair), Task force for Awars, My child matters steering committee, Global Cancer Control community, world cancer declaration working group, World Cancer Day activities, expert panel for cancer organizations for eastern Europe, World Cancer Congress committees, UICC reel lives film festival jury member and others. Additionally I have chaired many UICC collaborated national activities in Turkey including Hope Lodge Project, Cancer Patient Forums, UICC capacity building project, World cancer acivities, translations of UICC resources, Turkish TNM Committee and others. European Cancer Leagues involvement: ECL is a umbrella organization for European Cancer organizations (around 30 member society). I had served as a boar member and treasurer for 4 years then served as the president during 2002-2011 for two years. During my presidency, ECL had involved in European Partnership for Action Against Cancer (EPAAC), a EU initiated Europe wide project. ECL is still leading the prevention package of that project and I represented ECL in meeting at EU parliament building and involved in many different ECL actions and events. This was a very exiciting work for me and I was able to contribute to ECL work in many ways. ECCO advisory council membership: I represented ECL in ECCO advisory board for two years. This was also a unique platform for sharing the knowledge and expertise. IPA (International Pediatric Society) environment committee: This is the largest international pediatric society and I am a member of this committee. International Children’s Center: This center was established in France and its management was in Turkey since early 90s. I am a council member of ICC. It is mainly developing international projects on childhealth.

During Prof. Tuncer's tenure in the Ministry of Health he succeeded in achieving solid international work relationships with regional organizations, i.e., The Middle East Cancer Consortium and International organizations such as the Asian-Pacific Organization for Cancer Prevention, and IARC. As such, Prof. Tuncer provided himself with a clear and succinct vision of issues related to Cancer Control globally. Throughout his tenure in the Turkish Ministry of Health he persistently advocated for international collaborations and mutual support in campaigning against cancer. An important reason for his success in the international arena is his diplomatic talent and manners while negotiating with colleagues, politicians, administrators and legislators from foreign countries. Prof. Tuncer could not have achieved his governmental goals and objectives without having built a coherent, professional and competent team. Again, his personality enabled him to achieve excellent inter-human rapport and relationships, both nationally and internationally. Recently, Prof. Tuncer was nominated to be the Rector of Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey, the most prestigious academic institute in that country. The nomination was made by President Abdullah Gül, President of the Republic of Turkey, following elections by the academic staff of that University. The latter nomination, the highest post for an academician, was preceded by his position as the Chairperson of the Department of Cancer Control in the Ministry of Health (2001-2011), Chairperson of the Department of Pediatric Oncology, Hacettepe University Hospital, Ankara, Turkey (2004-2007), Director, Hacettepe University Pediatric Research Center (2000-2004), Director, Institute of Child Health, Hacettepe University (1993-2000), Director of Hacettepe Children's Hospital (1992-2000) and he obtained full professorship in Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology in 1995. Concomitantly, Prof Tuncer gained a National and International reputation through his involvement in leadership roles in professional societies such as the Asian-Pacific Organization for Cancer Prevention and the International Agency for Research in Cancer. All of the above achievements: academic, clinical, administrative, and organizational, clearly indicate the outstanding performance that has lasted for more than a decade. Further, Prof. Tuncer serves as the leader of the Turkish "New Hope in Health Foundation" which exposes him to the public media, pharmaceutical companies and fund raising. During his tenure in the Ministry of Health, Prof. Tuncer became extremely involved in an anti-smoking campaign. When Prof. Tuncer, representing the Republic of Turkey, joined the Board of Governors of the Middle East Cancer Consortium (MECC) in 2004, I was pleasantly surprised and pleased by many of his personal and professional qualifications. Not only had he already achieved a full professorship in Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, but he also had the experience of administering a ministerial department of cancer control. During our work together, Prof. Tuncer succeeded in building and operating a network of cancer registries in 8 provinces in Turkey. Moreover, our fruitful work together yielded the development of cancer palliative care services in Turkey through ongoing training activities which resulted in the "opening' of the oncology services for opioids. Since 2009, Prof. Tuncer has been serving as the chair of MECC's Board of Governors; and right from that time, it became clear to me that Prof. Tuncer was not the usual "national representative". His greater maturity, motivation and insight were evident in many areas of our joint work. His special interest in advocacy and public awareness, along with clinical and scientific affairs took us into several optional areas such as the establishment of a new international professional journal which is already in advanced stages of creation. Through my repeated visits to Turkey and our collaborative work in Europe and the United States, I learned that Prof. Tuncer not only set up an incredible active department in the Ministry of Health, but he has stimulated and encouraged many colleagues and associates in various aspects of cancer control in his own country and outside it. If there is one outstanding characteristic of Prof. Tuncer which impresses me more than any other, it is his constant search for new professional experiences to improve and promote issues related to cancer control. When one compares Prof. Tuncer's experiences and accomplishments with those of other potential candidates for the post of the UICC President Elect, I have no doubt in my mind that he ought to be considered as a serious candidate. Prof. Tuncer has expressed a strong interest in this post and is willing to devout his time, energy and international contacts for the overall goal of the UICC. I feel that in order to be eligible for such a position, a candidate must have demonstrated substantial accomplishments in clinical, administrative, academic, and public affairs. I am convinced that Prof. Tuncer has successfully fulfilled these requirements, and therefore I wholeheartedly support his candidacy. With the proper support and encouragement of the UICC staff and his dedicated efforts, I would predict a most productive future in his contribution to the UICC's global objectives.

His brilliant research involves diverse international collaborations. Over the years, Dr. Chen's basic and clinical findings have profound international influence. This is at least partly reflected by his honors being awarded, like The China National Grand Prize for Scientific Research, his membership in The National Academy of Science of USA, the US Institute of Medicine, and The French Academy of Sciences, the Third World Academy of Sciences, and the European Academy of Arts, Sciences and Humanities. During his tenure as Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dr. Chen was responsible for overseeing international cooperation and biomedical technology. As minister of The Ministry of Health of P. R. China, Dr. Chen spoke frequently during international meetings like WHO to address both national and international issues relevant to human health, including the concerted prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Particularly, the quality of Dr Chen's service and leadership during 2004-2006 as co-chairman for IAP, the global network of academies, has been testified by his re-election to this important position from 2007-2009. (http://www.interacademies.net/About/Committees.aspx). Dr. Chen speaks very fluent Chinese, English and French. This lends him instant acceptance by many international scientific bodies and scientists, clinicians, general populations in different regions.

Please be advised that if given the opportunity I would like to continue to serve on the UICC Board. To me it is a great honour and privilege to serve as a board member in such an international organization

As President of Femama, The Brazilian Philanthropic Breast Health Federation, founder of ULACCAN, The Latin American Cancer Coalition, I would like to express my desire to become an UICC Board Member, and therefore to represent our patients groups on an international level. In addition, through my expertise and leadership at Femama I would be able to carry out the UICC's message throughout Brazil. I strongly believe that as patients do not have conflicting interests, their voices and points of view are the most important views for international cancer movements. I am a 20 year veteran in the fight against breast cancer and advocate in Brazil and I can bring the UICC into closer contact with our civil society and its movements by supporting its advocacy efforts on a national level in Brazil. The UICC would also be able to bring its issues and messages to other Brazilian grassroots committees in which I participate as well. In both scenarios I can provide the UICC with objective and practical ideas and projects. As a cancer and breast health professional and advocate, It would be an honor to become one of the UICC Board Members. CV

It has been an honor and a privilege to work as a UICC Board Member since I was elected. The challenges and results that have been built constitute opportunities to UICC growth. More recently, UICC name change to Union for International Control produced even more recognition as a strategic and fundamental stakeholder in world cancer control. Also its professional management, the roadmap construction and administration, the regional and local initiatives in the world, the United Nations participation and collaboration on NCDS build the recognition of a work well done.

Dr. Bryant is a national/international expert in cancer control, having been a VP of Population Health and CIO of the Alberta Cancer Board for many years, prior to joining the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer when it was inaugurated in 2007. She has contributed to and chaired many national multi-disciplinary committees in cancer control, screening, and research, and has served in several international roles as well. Dr. Bryant is a strong collaborator and excellent communicator, and is frequently asked to speak nationally and internationally on cancer control issues. CV

Dr Carlos Vallejos is a medical oncologist, researcher, and teacher whose brilliant career has been highlighted by great social sensitivity. The recipient of many awards and distinctions, he has occupied senior executive positions in the field of public and private health in which he has clearly demonstrated a high level of commitment to the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of cancer. His keen desire to improve accessibility to early, effective cancer care for the needy has motivated him to be a successful leader in this field. He made significant contributions to the cancer prevention and treatment program, Primer Programa Nacional de Prevención y Control del Cancer, prioritizing the five most common malignancies in Peru – cervical, breast, stomach, prostate, and lung cancer, placing the country in the forefront in Latin America, ahead of the Program Against Breast Cancer in Brazil. The replication of Centers for Prevention and Diagnosis in the Ministerio de Salud care facilities that under the slogan “ Prevention to Live” perform screening tests and early diagnosis in order to ensure the well-being of the population, the implementation of cancer units in hospitals around the country, the decentralization of specialized cancer care, and make social inclusion in health, as well as the creation of the Institutos Regionales de Enfermedades Neoplásicas del Norte y del Sur and Peru´s incorporation in The Global Plan to Stop TB 2006 – 2015. His high spirit of innovation led him to be the mastermind and founder of the only prepaid private type system in Latin America specializing in the management of cancer coverage programs by expanding the population´s access to treatment of this disease at low cost, with high-quality care, achieving a 5 year survival of over 66% compared to the achievements of the developed countries. Clearly, these qualities and the abundant evidence of his high capacity in management, his social responsibility and unfailing adherence to research and continuous improvement, categorize Dr. Vallejos as a top health care executive. His innovative proposals will greatly contribute to the changing global environment CV

On behalf of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center ("Hutchinson Center"), herewith, I am pleased to write this strong LETTER OF SUPPORT for the nomination Dr. Benjamin 0. Anderson to the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) Board of Directors (BOD), for the period 2012-2014, as put forth by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). I believe that Dr. Anderson admirably meets and exceeds the high standards far participation in this critical position, as defined in the UICC BOD Terms of Reference. Dr. Anderson is the Founder, Chair and Director of the Breast Health Global Initiative (BHGI) and Full Member at the Hutchinson Center within the Division of Public Health Sciences, Director of the Breast Health Clinic at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, and Professor of Surgery and Global Health Medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. The Hutchinson Center, a pioneer in cancer research and home to three Nobel Laureates, has a global goal of creating scientific partnerships for collaboration. Over the past decade, Dr. Anderson has been a leading voice in the international breast cancer clinical improvement and best practices movement through the establishment of the BHGI, a global alliance of organizations and individuals dedicated to improving health outcomes of medically underserved women, co¬sponsored by the Hutchinson Center and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Through his leadership, the BHGI has pioneered development of comprehensive resource-sensitive, evidence-based clinical guidelines to improve breast cancer outcomes in law-and middle-resource countries. Throughout the innovative BHGI global work, Dr. Anderson has demonstrated remarkable vision, and gained wide-ranging experience in international cancer control, interacting with the UICC on a range of issues that speak to his suitability for board membership. Over the last six years, through the Hutchinson Center organizational membership in the UICC, Dr. Anderson has served as our official representative. The Center's membership is listed in all UICC directories as "Breast Health Global Initiative/Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center." And, reciprocally, the UICC has been closely aligned with the BHGI as a 'Participating Organization,' within the BHGI alliance; in this same time period. The "Breast Health-Common Interest Group" (BH-CIG), launched in 2009 by BHGI in alliance with the National Cancer Institute Office of International Affairs and UICC, was the UICC's first "Common Interest Group," a concept introduced by the UICC BOD to create a common venue for individuals and organizations with interests in global cancer control issues. Last year, in recognition of his global leadership, Dr. Anderson received the ASCO Partners in Progress award, which recognized him as a person involved in activities that impact public awareness about cancer, its causes, cures or treatment, or activities that support, either legislatively or fiscally, cancer research, treatment, prevention or care, and commitment to women worldwide, and his efforts to improve their quality of care. Dr. Anderson has a global perspective towards cancer control and prevention, fully capable to participate at the leading global forums such as the United Nations, World Health Organization and World Economic Forum. He has experience in leading an innovative global initiative, in partnership with other public and private sector organizations in the health field. In my judgment, Dr. Anderson is a proven global leader in the global cancer community, with global vision and exceptional capacity as a team builder, highly regarded internationally amongst peers. I believe that he would dedicate himself to the exceptional global leadership opportunity of the UICC Board of Directors. I recommend him wholeheartedly, and without reservation, for consideration of the UICC General Assembly, schedule in August of this year in Montreal, Canada, prior to the UICC World Cancer Congress.

CV

While cure rates for children with cancer in developed countries now exceeds 75-80%, this amazing statistic is only true for approx. 15% of the children of the world. Dr. Finlay's increasing involvement in and commitment to the children of low and middle income countries over the past 15 years reflects his recognition of the moral obligation of cancer leaders in developed countries to increasingly commit their support and expertise towards improving outcomes in developing countries. CV

CV

I find Dr. Holmes uniquely qualified to join the Board of Directors because she has a long background as a practicing physician before she began a career as a cancer epidemiologist, took a doctorate in epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health and worked at the Channing Laboratory on the Nurses' Health Study. Dr. Holmes work has been particularly focused on breast cancer research and more recently she has made seminal discoveries with regard to the influence of lifestyle factors on breast cancer survival. Hence, she combines a solid medical background with a profound methodologic training and extensive experience in cancer research and control. CV

Dr. Janjan has previous experience working with Dr. Eduardo Cazap from their leadership activities at ASCO. During her Presidency of ASTRO, Dr. Janjan represented this society at the UICC. She has contributed to numerous projects with the UN/IAEA such as a technical document entitled “Palliative Radiotherapy”. Furthermore, a position on the UICC BOD requires an understanding of geopolitical issues as they impact local healthcare systems. Her work as a Senior Fellow at the National Center for Policy Analysis contributes to her expertise in this regard. CV

It has been an honour to serve UICC and would like to stand for reelection and continue this service. I am aware of the commitment and will continue to devote myself to the tasks of strengthening UICC and moreso the global cancer movement. I also look very much forward to the coming two years of continued service and to working with Mary as she begins her terms as UICC President. I would also like to take this opportunity as a Board Member to thank you for your leadership and devotion to the organization and to the cause. It has been a pleasure to work with and for you and I do look forward to continuing this collaboration.

Dr. Prof. Ma is a well-known cancer researcher and expert in clinical radiation therapy. He has been active in UICC activities and a mentor or supervisor for many UICC scholars. He will make significant contributions to the future development and growth of UICC and to the fight against cancer. CV

Dr. Leslie Mancuso is the President and CEO of Jhpiego, an NGO affiliate of Johns Hopkins University that for nearly 40 years has worked with front-line health workers to design and implement low-cost, innovative solutions to strengthen the delivery of health care services to vulnerable women and their families. Innovations such as the Single Visit Approach (SVA), a unique, clinically safe, acceptable and effective approach to cervical cancer prevention for low-resource settings. Dr. Shidham is passionate about global cancer containment with emphasis on early detection and new avenues to manage cancers at early stage with additional interest in tumor angiogenesis as broader therapeutic approach. His experience and understanding about the field of cervical cancer with emphasis on cost effective, time proven approaches to detect and manage early cancer can be extrapolated to other cancers globally with incorporation of newer molecular ancillary modalities in appropriately effective manner instead of falling prey to superfluous glamour and aura if any associated to that area. Based on the observations as a cytopathologist and surgical pathologist, he noted that the strength of simple and low cost alternatives based on morphologic approaches have been underutilized with tremendous potential of cytopathology as contributing science to control cancer globally including poor developing world. His contribution as founding editor (and current executive editor & coeditor-in-chief) of open access CytoJournal (www.cytopjournal.com) to disseminate cytopathology research globally in open platform to retain it in public domain is widely acclaimed. CVNomination for a second term as board member with the aim to further improve collaboration of the German Cancer Society with the UICC and its programms. CV

UICC is dedicated to fight cancer by various strategies. Actually this is exactly what we are doing at the German Cancer Research Center. Specifically, my work is focused on both, basic research and translational approaches to transfer new methods into the clinical routine. For this purpose, e.g. in silico modeling methods are applied and receptor specific tracers are developed to perform diagnostic studies as well as therapeutic interventions. Furthermore, we perform studies with functional imaging procedures and correlate the results to molecular biological data, achieving detailed knowledge about the dependencies e.g. of tracers on gene expression Due to the close interaction at the center, I am able to provide information about both, more clinical based methods as well as basic science. Based on my work for nearly 28 years at the Cancer Center, multiple international cooperations and contacts were established. This is important to provide information and get support for concerted actions. Of course, these links will be provided for the work with UICC. Another important aspect of my work is focused on educational and general information programs. There is a dedicated unit at the Cancer Center, which provides this information on a routine base to the public and we are closely cooperating with them. These links to media, etc. are important to support the work of UICC. Summarizing I like to state, that the work especially with translational projects is an important base to evaluate and support applications worldwide with the experience which is demanded. The numerous international contacts are helpful to establish a network for support for certain actions. Finally, the contacts to the media are important to get public attention for certain programs. To be in a responsible and challenging position, where I can contribute quality and safety improvement of care to patients, implementation of medical waste disposal plans in countries in transition CV

Some friends and colleagues have proposed my candidature to the UICC Board of Directors. After some consideration of the responsibility that implies in case I were elected I feel that after so many years working in the field of cancer in different positions, this is an opportunity and to offer the experience and knowledge I have to help to accomplish the aims of a global organization dedicated to the cancer such as the UICC. As it can be seen from my CV I was first working in the clinical field as an oncologist and afterwards within the Basque Country (Spain) administration where I have had the opportunity to get experience in fields such as: cancer registration, cancer epidemiology & research, collaborating in population based screening programs and in the planning of services and resources for cancer patients among other tasks. On the other hand, I have been involved in Spanish professional associations and also international ones such as European Network of Cancer Registries (ENCR) and International Association of Cancer Registries (IACR), in some of them in the executive committees, which have given to me the opportunity to collaborate from a different position in formulating new policies for the group and to be in touch with other populations to evaluate the meaning of cancer situation for them. Of great interest were the meetings promoted in Africa. A particular interest during these years has been dedicated to Central& South America and Caribean countries. Having the same language was a very important tool. A network, Redepican, financed by CYTED was established with several groups from these countries. In relation to cancer epidemiology and registries various activities were developed: training, research projects and two guides to standardized criteria in the registries were written. Some exchanges were possible through the ICRETT fellowships. I understand that nowadays, cancer is affecting any population in the world. It is a global disease. And the solutions must be global as well. However activities must be very well defined to obtain good outcomes because the problem is heterogeneous and complex. There is a rapid pace of development of new drugs and techniques for cancer patients but to defeat cancer I think that is necessary the role of everyone. If I can be there with my voice and ideas within a global organization such as UICC I will consider it an honor. CV

The nominee, Dr. Samadhi Rajapaksa is fully devoted and committed to charity work and spending most of his time in counseling or sitting down with cancer patients. Upon his return from the University of Vitebsk on completion of his study in medicine with Honours, Dr. Samadhi Rajapaksa commenced working at Anuradhapura (in the Central Province of SL) as an intern doctor. During this period he could realize how much it would help a patient when a doctor whispers a kind world, is much concerned about patients inquiring into them drawing his personal attention and being a kind doctor willingly listening to them. His quality of paying attention to patients was further extended by helping the cancer patients and monks who visited the hospital by providing them with refreshments before attending to their complaints or grievances since most of these people were traveling from far off villages. Dr. Samadhi has a healing and caring touch with a compassionate heart for the sick and the poor. His vision and mission is not an easy one, though he continues his work with utmost devotion and untiring commitment. He established a charity organization in 2003 (Cancer Care Association) to extend his services towards cancer patients in many forms, not only to support them with everyday financial and medical needs to cope with painful situations, but also to help them by providing spiritual support to mentally overcome various problems on becoming cancer patients. Dr. Samadhi is constantly helping the National Cancer Institute too in providing expensive drugs and equipments needed for cancer patients and supporting research/investigations by using his good rapport with many philanthropist individuals and institutions. Returning to normal life is a challenge indeed to an oncology patient as well as their families in many forms. Dr. Samadhi provides ongoing support to cancer patients through counseling and enables them to dispel their fears and anxieties. He pioneered to establish a hospice with a capacity of accommodating 45 cancer patients (in outstation) last year to help “terminally ill cancer patients”. This is the first occasion in the history of Sri Lanka that an individual has pioneered to establish a hospice and it is the only one available in outstation. This activity of Dr. Samadhi alone is the best example to witness his suitability to be a leader in the field of palliative care. Dr. Samadhi who is an expert in providing palliative care to cancer patients has now begun to providing home-based palliative care too. Dr. Samadhi is not merely a medical professional, but a human being with a feeling, a heart and thirst for helping the sick, especially cancer patients! The contribution extended by Dr. Samadhi for the activities being launched by Jeewaka Foundation towards achieving its vision to prevent people from smoking and to minimize the spread of cancer by raising community awareness with the involvement of media and medical professionals as well as drawing the attention of policy makers is commendable. In Sri Lanka smoking is responsible for 40% of cancers and one third of the population is smoking. At present he is campaigning to pressurize Sri Lanka government to implement the regulation on Pictorial Health Warnings on tobacco products and enlightening the media, medical professionals and policy makers on the provisions of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) of the World Health Organization. Taking into consideration the above information Jeewaka Foundation is confident that Dr. Samadhi Wishvanath Rajapaksa would be a good fit for the position of UICC member of the Board. CV

If elected to the Board of the UICC, I would commit wholeheartedly to the work of the organisation and willingly share my skill and experience to further its objectives. I would welcome the opportunity to serve. Statement from the President of IPOS. Prof. Dunn joined the IPOS Board in May 2010 and has been an extremely engaged and active participant on the Board since that time. He has made significant contributions by developing innovative programs in support of our strategic plan, and then in leading implementation as agreed by the Board. It is with utmost respect and pleasure that I highly commend Prof. Dunn for election to the UICC Board of Directors. Professor Dunn was invited by me to join the editorial board of the Psycho-Oncology journal, the leading journal in our field. His contributions to the journal have been of the highest standard. I commend his as someone with a strong international reputation who has made a clear and beneficial impact on patient care. Respectfully submitted, Prof. Maggie Watson, President of IPOS. Statement from the Executive Director of IPOS. I have known and worked with Prof Dunn for the two years since he has joined the IPOS Board. In this time he has proven to be a diligent advocate for the mission and vision of IPOS, bringing forward creative and effective plans and programs. He is effective in following through with implementation of his commitments. He is a collaborative and highly esteemed leader and has earned the respect and appreciation of his colleagues on the Board and the IPOS staff that have the pleasure to work with him. Respectfully submitted, Elliott Graham, Executive Director of IPOS. CV

I accepted the request from the New Zealand Cancer Society that they nominate me for a position on the UICC Board. I want to outline my vision for this role and UICC. I have been a member of UICC for many years and attended my first UICC Congress in Hamburg in 1990 when I was practicing as a medical oncologist. As CEO of Cancer Council Australia I led the successful bid on behalf of the other Cancer Council members for the UICC 2014 Congress in Melbourne. It would be helpful to serve on the Board over the lead up to that meeting. In my role at Cancer Council Australia we have an ongoing relationship with UICC supporting the APCASOT and ICRETT Fellowships, as well as funding the membership fees for developing countries in our region. We also joint funded a position with UICC to help co-ordinate the Australian response to the UN high level meeting on NCD’s. In terms of my vision for UICC I would like to see a greater focus on addressing the disparities in cancer control between the developing and developed world1. I certainly have proposed including the issues of the SE Asian and Western Pacific region in the 2014 meeting, but opportunities need to be ongoing. I have personal experience in a longstanding commitment to mentoring medical oncologists in hospitals in India but recognise that there are many such initiatives which remain unco-ordinated. I would support the concept that all of the educational materials generated by the congresses become a digital repository of information which is then freely available to programs in developing nations. I strongly support the role of UICC in international advocacy. As part of an organisation charged with the responsibility for national advocacy in cancer control it is helpful to have an international organisation to link with who can translate that internationally and useful for international success to be a source of data to support lobbying locally. I want to explore synergies between UICC and other national and international organisations. I am a longstanding member of ASCO (American Society of Clinical Oncology), most recently having served on their Ethics committee. I serve on the Palliative Care working group of ESMO (European Society of Medical Oncology) and am on the Board of MASCC (Multinational Association for Symptom Control in Cancer) and edited their textbook on Cancer Supportive Care and Survivorship with authors from 17 countries. I am on the Council of the Clinical Oncological Society of Australian and their International Affairs Working Group. All of these organisations have some overlapping goals and there may be synergies to be explored. CV

I am deeply motivated to serve UICC as a person from a developing country who knows the needs of developing countries, and am looking forward to working together with other organizations from multiple countries to control cancer. I am a deep believer of cancer prevention and early detection and hope to be able to bring this message to a very wide population.

On behalf of the American Cancer Society, I would like to recommend that Dileep G. Bal, MD, be considered as President-Elect of the UICC National Board. As a practising academic pediatric oncologist, scientist and professional health care executive in Turkey, I have observed very closely the difficulties and challenges in improving the healthcare. Then I decided to involve in health care management at professional level and NGO management. I am involved in the quality improvement project of Turkey’s leading Hospital, Hacettepe University Hospitals, and be able to accredited the whole hospital complex by US Joint Commission International. I have involved many national and international project on cancer control. My society is a member of UICC since 1969 and I personally have been working with UICC very closely more than 10 years. During those years, I was able to contribute to cancer control activities in my country and learnt a lot from UICC experience and I also had opportunity to share my knowledge and experience with UICC community. I personally feel myself belonging to UICC community. During the last two years, cancer has been on global agenda more than previously it had. With my management and NGO background together with my international experience, I think I could be helpful for UICC and ready to serve for UICC as president. CV

Dr. Chen Zhu is an outstanding scientist with top-notch expertise in molecular oncological studies and treatment against acute promyelocytic leukemia. Dr. Chen has, together with his colleagues at Shanghai Jiaotong University Medical School, pioneered the highly effective and well-acclaimed all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) and arsenic oxide cocktail therapy against acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), based on induced differentiation and apoptosis, with surprisingly high 5 years survival rate (from 25% to 95%) for this notoriously malignant cancer afflicting numerous patients worldwide. His remarkable accomplishments have been recognized internationally as evidenced by his most recent official nomination as one of the two 2011 recipients of the 7th Annual Szent-Györgyi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research, sharing with Dr. Zhen-Yi Wang, his former mentor and colleague, an honor established by "the National Foundation for Cancer Research to recognize outstanding scientific achievements in the war against cancer and to honor pioneering scientists who have made extraordinary contributions in cancer research." Dr. Chen has published over 300 original research paper in peer-reviewed international journals like Science, Nature Genetics, PNAS, EMBO J, J Exp Med, JCI, Blood, Am J Hum Genet, Oncogene, Leukemia and domestic journals, with citations over 9400 times. Dr. Chen is not only an academic leader, but also an eminent politic figure with global vision and international presence. Over the years, Dr. Chen has diverse and very competent administrative experiences in steering a plethora of organizations including academic research centers, The Chinese Academy of Sciences (as Vice-President during 2000-2007), The Ministry of Health of P.R. China (2007-present), China Medical Association (as president from 2010 onward), international organizations like IAP, the global networks of academies (two terms from 2004-2006 and 2007-2009) etc.  His functions at these positions are mostly relevant to academic research and prevention of, diagnosis and treatment to cancer. Dr. Chen's connection with UICC is evidenced by his attendance at the launching of UICC CHINA SPOKE in 2009, his interview in 2009 with Dr. David Hill, UICC former president, his attendance to the UICC World Cancer Congress of 2010 Shenzhen, China and delivery of plenary speech during the opening ceremony on August 18, 2010. His international exposure thus far foretells his big potential as a world-class organizer in human battle against cancer. Dr. Chen has excellent personalities in dealing with people, showing great concern for the rural population in China and having adopted a series of measures to better medical service to citizens of China through prevention, early diagnosis and treatment. A very talented bright scholar, educator and public leader, Dr. Chen enjoys welcome and respect from the majority of those dealing with him. Thus I have full reason to believe that Dr. Chen Zhu is highly qualified to be considered for the prestigious position of UICC President-Elect 2012. I trust that Dr. Chen, upon official appointment by UICC Nominating Committee, will perfectly function to meet all expectations carried by the position of President-Elect for furthering the global impact and image of UICC
