3June - July 2018

In honor of the 80th anniversary of MGPL this year, here are some fun facts about the library, one for each decade of its life:

In 1938, the library was established with Works Progress Administration

financing. Its original collection consisted of 300 books delivered in a barrel to its first location in a store

at 6100 Lincoln Avenue.

1930sIn 1948, the library moved from a store-front location

on the 6200 block of Lincoln Avenue to the second floor

of the Callie Avenue fire station.

1940sIn 1952, the library moved to its current location at 6140

Lincoln Avenue. The original building was 1,500 square feet and was comprised

of the area that is now the Quiet Reading Room, Teen

Space and adjacent offices.

1950s

In 1964, the library acquired its first photocopy machine

and added LPs to the collection.

1960s

In 1970, the library began publishing a quarterly

newsletter called Browse.

1970sIn 1983, the library

approved purchase of its first computer

(an Eagle PC) and printer for the administrative office,

which cost $5,912 ($14,963 in 2018 dollars!)

1980s

In 1995, the library’s first website appeared at

www.webrary.org.

1990s

In 2003, the library’s remaining cassette tapes were removed from the

collection.

2000s

In 2015, the library began circulating laptops, and

in 2017 WiFi hotspots.

THERE’S SOMETHING NEW AT THE LIBRARY!

We are excited to roll out the first of our Early Literacy Kits: backpacks that contain books and toys for you and your preschool child to use at home to promote early literacy skill development.

We also have two Starling Kits aimed at parents of children, birth to age 2. When paired with your smartphone, the Starling device will track the number and variety of words your child hears throughout the day.

You can find these kits, as well as our STEM Kits for older kids, in the Youth Services Department. Check one out today!

Each year, librarians put together a list of great reads for kids entering Kindergarten through 6th Grade.

You can find these lists in the Library and on our website at
