Safety instructions 2Risk of death resulting from failure to observe the safety instructions and residual risks

If you fail to heed and comply with the safety instructions and residual risks in the associated converter documentation, accidents can occur. This can result in severe injury or death.• Observe the safety instructions in the converter documentation.• Consider the residual risks in the risk assessment.

Danger due to insufficient trainingAny operation and service involving the "Two-channel firing pulse inhibit" function must be performed by trained qualified personnel only. The drive can start unexpectedly due to improper operation of the function. This can result in death, serious injury or material damage.• Carefully ensure that everyone operating or servicing the "Two-channel firing pulse inhibit"

function are adequately trained before they use the function. Training must include studying the function and its integration into the production process. Documenting the training.

Danger due to coast down of the motorWhen the "Two-channel firing pulse inhibit" function is activated while the machine is rotating, then the motor coasts down if it has not yet come to a stop.Incorrect use can result in death, serious injury or substantial material damage.• Apply the appropriate protective measures to avoid danger to people resulting from the

motor coasting down after the power supply has been disconnected.

Danger of the motor jerking into motion from standstillWhen certain faults occur in the Power Module, brief jerking of the motor into motion from standstill cannot be ruled out. The simultaneous destruction (short-circuit or breakdown of depletion layer) of 2 power thyristors in the converter may cause the drive to move briefly depending on the number of poles that the motor has. The precondition for this brief drive movement is that one power thyristor in the upper branch and one power thyristor offset in the lower branch develops a short-circuit or breaks down the depletion layer. For rotary three-phase motors, this alignment movement can be a maximum of 180° / number of pole pairs at the motor shaft. An alternating field is generated in the motor winding as a result of the double fault described above where 2 power thyristors remain in the conducting state. However, this does not result in a rotating field and continuous rotation. The destruction of 2 power semiconductors can only occur when several power thyristors simultaneously break down (depletion layer is broken down) or as a result of multiple simultaneous faults in the control modules. Although these types of double faults can only occur

Two-channel firing pulse inhibitFunction Manual, 07/2021, A5E51227986A 7

with a very low probability, the machine builder (OEM) must carefully check as to whether additional measures are required. Incorrect handling when the motor suddenly moves can result in death, serious injury or substantial material damage.• Adopt suitable protective measures to ensure that personnel is not endangered by the motor

jerking into motion from standstill.• Carefully ensure that everyone operating the "Two-channel firing pulse inhibit" function are

adequately trained before they use the function. Training must include studying the function and its integration into the production process. Documenting the training.

Danger due to the motor restartingDrive systems, in which the energy supply to the motor is also possible via the load, e.g. marine drives, conveyors, fans, etc., cannot be protected against restart using the "Two-channel firing pulse inhibit" function. Sudden and unexpected restarting of the motor can result in death, serious injury or substantial material damage.• Take appropriate countermeasures, such as mechanical braking.

Danger by not waiting for the principle-related delay time to elapseSelecting the "Two-channel firing pulse inhibit" function causes the firing pulses to be inhibited. Due to the inherent operating principle, the firing pulses are inhibited after a short delay time. The recommended delay time setting at the 3SK11 safety relay is 0.5 seconds.Death and severe injury can occur if the delay time is not strictly observed.• After externally activating the "Two-channel firing pulse inhibit" function, always wait until

the set delay time has elapsed. • For the upstream safety controls, take into account this delay time when releasing protective

doors or other protective equipment.

Danger due to high voltageThe drive is not disconnected from the line supply when activating the "Two-channel firing pulse inhibit" function. Dangerous voltages of over 1000 V are present on the motor and drive converter. High voltages can cause death or serious injury if the safety rules are not observed or if the equipment is handled incorrectly.• Isolate the electrical equipment from the line supply at the main switch when it breaks down

or stops, or when it needs to be serviced, repaired or cleaned.• Do not carry out any work on electrical connections without first applying all of the necessary

protective measures. Observe the 5 safety rules before undertaking work on the equipment.

Description 3When the "Two-channel firing pulse inhibit" function is selected, the following points apply:• The optical pulse transmission to the PSA to control the firing pulses on the thyristor gating

module is switched off.• The Motor Module and the motor are not electrically isolated.

NoteActive loadsUsing the function, drive systems with active loads cannot be protected against restarting due to an external energy supply. Take into account this residual risk when designing your machine and where necessary apply suitable countermeasures, mechanical brakes for example.

3.1 StructureThe structure of the "Two-channel firing pulse inhibit" function is shown in the following diagram

(‒)

Figure 3-1 Overview of the main components

The components in detail① A tripping device, e.g. mushroom pushbutton (not included in the delivery scope of the option).

As the actuator, a forced NC contact according to ISO 23850 and EN 60947-1 or a certified safety control F-PLC can be used.

② Control voltage power supply (part of the basic device, not part of the option). The power supply must conform to SafetyExtraLowVoltage certification with the requirements included in it, as the PSA ground potential is at the ground potential of the converter housing. The components of the two-channel firing pulse inhibit are supplied with the same voltage.

④ Power Stack Adapter (part of the basic device, not part of the option)The principle of the firing pulse interruption (inhibit) has a two-channel structure. The power supply for the diode light emitters and also the outputs of the diode light emitter drivers can be interrupted.

⑤ Converter control (part of the basic device, not part of the option)The converter control comprises a SIMOTION D4x5 and SINAMICS CU320 - referred to the two-channel firing pulse inhibit, only plays a subordinate role. Even if these components are indispensable when it comes to operating the converter, the function of the two-channel firing pulse inhibit is an independent hardware solution, without the necessity of having to use software components for the control. Having said that, the control is integrated into the switching sequence and serves to additionally monitor the function.

NoteFirmware versionThe evaluation of the firing pulse inhibit feedback signals from the PSAs and the initiation of the alarm according to function block diagram FBD 9845 are only available from firmware SINAMICS MV V5.2.4.1 and higher. The "SCOUT" SSP MV V5.2.4 software is also required.

3.2 Function featuresAfter activation, the PSA modules to implement the "Two-channel firing pulse inhibit" function are incorporated by interrupting the fiber-optic cable transmission to the PSAs through two channels.

Description3.2 Function features

Standard monitoring mechanisms

NoteNote for system integratorsThese standard monitoring mechanisms are implemented in the converter. Within the scope of a system acceptance test, check and document the correct principle of operation in combination with external components.

• a) After a firing pulse inhibit, the Control Unit activates the thyristor monitoring functions on the PSAs via DRIVE-CLiQ communication. By evaluating the gate-cathode voltages, the thyristor monitoring detects thyristors in the power unit that are in the conducting state (not turned off). Conducting thyristors (not turned off) cause the line-side circuit breaker to be immediately opened. The SIMOTION-CPU directly opens the circuit breaker via a digital output of a TM15 module, which is physically coupled to the CU320-2 via a DRIVE-CLiQ connection.

• b) In addition, the current actual values that are received from the PSAs via the DRIVE-CLiQ connection are monitored in the Control Unit. After a firing pulse inhibit, if the current actual value of a converter is not equal to zero, then the Control Unit opens the line-side circuit breaker via a digital output of the TM15.

• If a DRIVE-CLiQ communication error occurs between the Control Unit and the PSAs, then it is possible that the monitoring mechanisms under Point a) and b) no longer function reliably. This is the reason that immediately after a DRIVE-CLiQ fault/error is detected, the circuit breaker is tripped by the PSAs.

3.3 Functions

3.3.1 Switching sequences from the perspective of the system operatorFor system operation that uses the "Two-channel firing pulse inhibit" function, it makes sense to maintain a sequence for deactivating and activating the firing pulse inhibit. This also applies when switching on the drive again.

Preparing for use 44.1 Wiring for cable lengths exceeding 30 m

Cable type• Shielded cable, Sabix D345 4x2x0.5mm²• Capacitance per unit length: 30 nF/km• SAB Bröckskes, Siemens article number 1010084

Cable lengthAs a result of possible capacitances that may occur due to the cable installation, we recommend limiting the cable length as follows:• Removal of the triggering device for the safety relay: 100 m• Removal of the safety relay for the PSA: 100 mThe data on maximum cable length can be found in the data sheet/application manual of the safety relay. You will find further information in the Industry Mall (https://support.industry.siemens.com/cs/ww/en/view/91198365).

Wiring1. Connect the cable shield at both ends in the controller cabinet and the converter cabinet.

Install the cable in a protected duct.2. Connect the shield between the safety relay and PSA to a suitable point in the cabinet

connection area (customer terminals). The internal cabinet wiring is implemented in the factory. The maximum permissible cable length between the safety relay and the PSA results from the specification in the data sheet of the safety relay. When calculating the cable length, take into consideration the input capacitance of the relevant switch-off signal path with approx. 40 nF.

Operation 5It makes sense and we recommend that the drive is shut down before you activate the "Two-channel firing pulse inhibit" function. • You must manually shutdown the drive if you activate the firing pulse inhibit using a

mushroom pushbutton.• If the firing pulse inhibit is initiated from a higher-level, failsafe controller, then before

activation, this control can shut down the drive via the "standard" operational device functions. The system integrator must supply and implement these higher-level functions - and they will not be discussed here.

WARNINGDanger due to coast down of the motorWhen the "Two-channel firing pulse inhibit" function is activated while the machine is rotating, then the motor coasts down if it has not yet come to a stop.Incorrect use can result in death, serious injury or substantial material damage.• Apply the appropriate protective measures to avoid danger to people resulting from the

motor coasting down after the power supply has been disconnected.

A.2 Checking the wiring when the function is retrofitted

A.2.1 Wiring to the tripping device

Requirements• The wiring to the upstream tripping device must be implemented through two channels

using potential-free contacts. • A tripping device, e.g. mushroom pushbutton or a safety PLC (F-PLC) must be connected. It

is not permissible that the input terminals are jumpered.

Checking the wiring.1. Check the wiring from the terminal strip to device connections "T1", "IN1" and "T2", "IN2" of

the safety relay. The safety relay indicates if there is a wiring fault: "Group fault, short-circuit/cross-circuit fault at the input".

LED Status1/device Off2/Out Off3/IN Yellow flashing4/SF Red

If you have correctly wired up the circuit, when the firing pulse inhibit is not activated, the safety relay LEDs indicate "Device ready for operation, all outputs active".

LED Status1/device Green2/Out Green3/IN Green4/SF Off

2. Check signal "Firing pulse inhibit request to the Control Unit for pulse inhibit". If the safety relay indicates state "Device ready for operation, all outputs active", then the digital input in the control at the Control Unit must have a high signal level. After activating the firing pulse inhibit, the input changes to the "Low" state.

WiringA.2 Checking the wiring when the function is retrofitted

Two-channel firing pulse inhibit20 Function Manual, 07/2021, A5E51227986A

A.2.2 Wiring to the PSAs in the power unit1. Initiate an external firing pulse inhibit using the connected trigger element. LED "2/OUT"

flashes green/yellow.After the set delay time t = 0.5 s has elapsed, the safety relay LEDs indicate state "Device ready for operation, all outputs inactive".

LED Status1/device Green2/Out Off3/IN Off4/SF Off

2. Withdraw the external firing pulse inhibit. The LEDs should again indicate state "Device ready, all outputs active".

LED Status1/device Green2/Out Green3/IN Green4/SF Off

If a fault has occurred in the feedback circuit "Feedback" (input INF at the safety relay), then the LED display signals fault "Device ready, feedback signal fault".

LED Status1/device Green2/Out Green flashing3/IN Green4/SF Red flashing

The LEDs indicate that when withdrawing/deactivating the external firing pulse inhibit (sensor circuits IN1 and IN2 are activated), the feedback circuit at the safety relay was not closed. The safety-related outputs of the safety relay can only be activated if the feedback circuit is closed.
