A narrative follows: _x_ Yes ___ No Submission Deadline: 1 April 2014 Public Image Award Our club is privileged to have a very talented Publicity Director, Harold Nedd, who has worked diligently with our team to ensure our projects and activities are in the public eye in a way which reflects favorably upon Rotary and which engenders support for our activities. We have provided news releases for each activity to ensure that the public media are aware and assist in our promotion of events. Two major radio entities, Clear Channel and Salem Communications, as well as regional news media, have supported us well, thanks to Harold’s accurate, informative and timely coverage, as well as excellent photography from Alex Vergara, Dan Fullenwider and other Rotarians. Both local and international programs have been well covered and as a result, we have gained much support for the community. Our club website, using ClubRunner, is well organized and provides our club and our visitors with a wealth of good information. In addition, we publish a weekly newsletter distributed electronically to all members to provide information of immediate interest. We do ont ignore the value of social media to spread the word. We use both Facebook and Twitter: (facebook.com/rotaryclubkapolei) and Twitter (Account name --@kapoleirotary) to provide information. Other effective tools we use are the Rotary banners and standing signs at the school where we hold weekly meetings and at community events. All club members have Kapolei Rotary golf shirts and Kapolei Rotary tee shirts. Depending upon which is appropriate for the occasion, we wear these shirts as a team for our community activities. This generates a lot of favorable comment and helps us to promote Rotary. Many members of our club have distinctive Rotary business cards with the four way test, as well as contact and meeting information. These promote our club in the community.

Besides our own PR program, we also coordinate our public image with the other Maui clubs, working with AG Joanne Laird and Maui Weekly publisher PP Debra Lordan. Of course, our principal public image medium is our website, http://mauirotary.org (or www.rckw.org )which resides on the Club Runner site http://www.clubrunner.ca/Portal/Home.aspx?accountid=216 . Most prominent on our website is a Rotary in the News feature, with an illustrated list of newspaper articles on the Club and island-wide Rotary, which of course grows during the year. The website is updated weekly with our latest internet Newsletter, and links to archives of past Newsletters, and videos of past meeting programs. The website is the hub, linked to all of the social media sites. Our main active social media site is our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Rotary-Club-of-Kihei-Wailea/276278484495?fref=ts , which shares and likes member Mark Harbison’s FB site https://www.facebook.com/MarkHarbison.Rotary and the Rotary Clubs of Maui FB site http://www.facebook.com/rotaryclubsofmaui?fref=ts , to which AG Laird and Maui Grants Resource Leader Mark Harbison post regularly. Our Twitter site https://twitter.com/RCKiheiWailea and LinkedIn site http://www.linkedin.com/groupsSunri/Rotary-Club-Kihei-Wailea-2811782?gid=2811782&mostPopular=&trk=tyah are works in progress. Our PR Committee appoints a Program Chair each month, who is responsible for ensuring that a PSA announcing our program is sent to the Maui News Calendar, as in this example: http://www.mauinews.com/page/calendars.detail/cal/8/event/3898/Rotary-Club-of-Kihei-Wailea.html?d=2013-03-20%2012%3A00%3A00%2E0 . We are blessed to have a dedicated Rotarian, PP Debra Lordan, as the Publisher of the Maui Weekly. She not only ensures that our service projects and fundraisers are covered by her newspaper, but also that they are picked up by sister publication, the Maui News. Our collaboration with the RC of Kihei Sunrise on 2 District Grants to fund book purchases for a new library at Lokelani School was featured in this article in the Maui News: http://www.mauinews.com/page/content.detail/id/582914/Rotary-clubs-join-forces-to-build-school-library.html?nav=15 . The island-wide dictionary project was featured in this article in the Maui Weekly: http://www.mauinow.org//RCKW/Newspapers/1311Dictionaries.html . Whenever possible, weekly program announcement are also featured in the Maui News Local Briefs, as in the example below: http://www.mauinews.com/page/content.detail/id/565610/Local-Briefs.html . Major news is carried in bigger stories. Here is the Maui News article on Maui RYLA, which on Maui is a joint venture of all 9 island RCs: http://www.mauinews.com/page/content.detail/id/582918/Maui-students-learn-about-leadership.html?nav=15 . We also plan our projects with public image in mind. On Maui, Banners are an effective way to publicize our projects. Kihei Safeway at the Pi’ilani Center is one of the gateways to South Maui—we put up large 4 X 8 banners at both entrances during our school supplies and Maui Food Bank Drives there. We banners at all public events, including our monthly Saturday morning beach and trail clean-ups at the Kihei Boat Ramp, our Kihei 4th Friday booth at the Azeka Shopping Center, and at the Whale Day parade in February. The most exciting innovation of the current Rotary Year was to switch from the old projector/screen technology to exploiting Mulligan’s 3 flat panel screens. This enables President Stuart Karlan to use the website, Facebook site, and newsletter to recap recent projects (including photos) and introduce upcoming events, thus, not only providing information, but also marketing the website not only to members, but also crucially, to our many visiting Rotarians and guests.

AWARDS SUBMISSION FORM

2013-2014

Public Image – Rotary Club of Kona

Our Public image is very important to us. Our One Community, One Club program was an effort to get our

clubs working together for the community, and at the same time raise awareness of the role of Rotary in our

community.

We maintain an active Facebook Page posting pictures of events, Rotarians and activities. We are developing

a social networking plan and working with Rotarians to improve their understanding of the importance of

Facebook in promoting our events, enhancing our presence in the community. We have increased followers

by over 100% and held special meeting to educate members on the importance of social media in recruiting

and maintaining younger members. We have set up a photo sharing site for pictures of events and activities.

We have set up Twitter and LinkedIn Pages.

Rotary Club of Kona has an arrangement with the local newspaper, West Hawaii Today, to place one free

advertisement every month. We share that with other clubs to promote Rotary and our activities. We place

additional ads as well. We also publicize the Project Compassion Events in the paper and on-line.

We submit information about grants, scholarships and project Compassion in the community section of the

paper and through social media and the website. We have had newspaper articles written about project

compassion.

The PGA Mitsubishi Tournament provides another opportunity for Rotary’s presence to be felt. We organize

over 450 volunteers and interact with hundreds of visitors. The Rotary banners hang at the volunteer tent and

we wear our Rotary Pins on our shirts during the event. The PGA recognizes us as the best volunteer team of

the Tour of Champions Events, and has renewed our contract for three more years. As noted above, PGA

donates more than $50,000 to our club each year in return for this service. PGA also promotes Rotary and our

community projects through their PGA media campaign.

Our Rotary at Work t-shirts say “Rotary Works’ on the back, and all Rotary members have one.

A narrative follows: _X_ Yes ____ No Submission Deadline: 1 April 2014 Club posts or prints a Newsletter each week. Member Co-Chair Skip, a long-time member who never published the bulletin before, took the initiative to become the primary editor of our bulletin. He overcame multiple obstacles, including frequent professional travel abroad, technical challenges, and confusing jargon by the speakers, to create a quality weekly bulletin that all members value and appreciate. Club utilizes social media to communicate with members and non-Rotarians. Co-President Lasar was very active in posting photos and comments on the site created by Co-President Tony. Programs Chair Marshall posted multiple times reminding members of upcoming events, and even our speakers chimed in as well. Club members have Rotary work shirts or tees to enhance visibility at projects and events. Youth Services Co-Chair Greg took the initiative and produced work T-shirts, which we have used for most of our service projects this year. The shirt is baby blue in color with “Pearlridge” and the Rotary Wheel in white—simple, yet very effective. Club members are encouraged to develop a Rotary “elevator speech” / Club members are encouraged to wear the Rotary pin more than once a week. During the Club Assembly, Co-President Tony reminded how we each developed and recited our own individual Rotary “elevator speech” and that we need to think about how we would say it again, or differently the next time based on our increased knowledge and/or experience in Rotary. He also encouraged members to wear the Rotary pin more than once a week to get others to notice and ask what that is or represents. This would be a perfect opportunity for the member being asked to recite the elevator speech.
