The Class of 1951
The class of 1951, University of Minnesota Medical School, is observing the 50th anniversary of its graduation this week. These senior alumni of the Medical School have returned to Minnesota for this joyous occasion and are assembled with us today as honored guests.

Today you begin your cru·eer as a physician - a tin1e you will remember throughout your life.
You will have numerous options in the future, from primary care, to specialties, research, and international health, but the essence of your professional life will be in caring for patients and preventing disease. Scientific discoveries in the next fifty years will change much of what you have leruned lmd what you will do as a physichm, but traits that characterize the rut of medicine throughout the centuries, commitment, communication and compassion, will be your touchstone.
The Oath for New Physicians will guide you as you strive to meet the demands of a diverse society, providing care to the sick, and grappling with complex ethical issues. The Oath will keep you true to the highest professional standards.
You have worked hard to don the hood you will wear with pride in today 's ceremony. The colors of maroon and gold represent the University of Mirmesota Medical School, and the green velvet is universally recognized as the color of the medical profession.
I commend you on your hard work and perseverance.

OATH FOR NEW PHYSICIANS In the light of all I hold sacred, in the presence of my family, friends, and teachers, I pledge to fulfill my obligations as a member of the healing profession.
My responsibility is to promote the health of the community and persons I serve. The health of you, my patient, will be my first commitment.
My privileges depend upon your trust: I will not violate that trust. I will respect all hat is confided in me. I will do no harm.
I will honor your dignity. I will be your zealous advocate, guided by your will, sensitive to your feelings, needs and thoughts.
I respect and cherish the lives of all persons. I will not discriminate against any person in my medical decisions and care of patients.
I recognize the limits of my competence. I will seek the knowledge and inspiration of my colleagues whenever your needs require. I will strive to improve the knowledge and skill I profess to have.
I am responsible for contributing to an improved community. I will strive to prevent disease and to correct adverse social conditions. I will serve as both a teacher and a role model for my patients, my successors, and the public.
