The updated policy will take effect at 12:01 AM on September 8, 2009. As is customary at this time of the year, we have been reviewing and updating many of Medic’s policies to make sure the framework is set to meet the needs of the Agency and its employees today, as opposed to when some of these policies were originally drafted. This is the first of a handful of policies that will have changes to announce in the coming weeks. There are a handful of important changes to note in the Attendance Policy, each of which were reviewed and supported by the Agency/ Employee Attendance Committee. The main changes are as follows: 1) Employees are allowed to submit for point wavier a maximum of eight (8) medical documentations over the course of a rolling calendar year. Any employee who has medical conditions that require them to be away from their assigned position within the Agency should consider consultation with the Agency Nurse for Family Medical Leave Act availability. 2) Employees who submit a request for benefit leave usage and decide not to use this leave should give the scheduling department three (3) days minimum notice of cancellation prior to that day. This allows for the cancellation / moving of any personnel assigned to fill the vacancy. Anything less than the 3 day window of notice will be up to discretion of the Operations / CMED Supervisor. 3) The Agency reserves the right to freeze all scheduled benefit leave usage during holidays or events which are considered to be ‘high demand’ (ex. December 31 st , July 4 th , etc.). Any employee that maliciously uses sick time during this time will be subject to discipline action up to and including termination of employment, if proved to be unwarranted. Any requests for leave during any of these announced holidays will be reviewed just prior to the holiday itself to determine if the Agency can withstand allowing personnel off the schedule. Again, these changes are highlighted in the body of the new Attendance Policy that was emailed to employees on Wednesday, September 2nd. If you need a copy, please contact your Supervisor. Everyone should take the time to review the policy in its entirety to ensure full understanding; please take any questions or concerns to your Supervisor or Barry Bagwell. On Wednesday, September 2nd, all employees were emailed a copy of the UPDATED Medic Attendance Policy by Jeff Keith.

The updated policy will take effect at 12:01 AM on September 8, 2009. As is customary at this time of the year, we have been reviewing and updating many of Medic’s policies to make sure the framework is set to meet the needs of the Agency and its

employees today, as opposed to when some of these policies were originally drafted. This is the first of a handful of policies that will have changes to announce in the coming weeks. There are a handful of important changes to note in the Attendance Policy, each of which were reviewed and supported by the Agency/Employee Attendance Committee. The main changes are as follows:

1) Employees are allowed to submit for point wavier a maximum of eight (8) medical documentations over the course of a rolling calendar year.

December 31st, July 4th, etc.). Any employee that

maliciously uses sick time during this time will be subject to discipline action up to and including termination of employment, if proved to be unwarranted. Correction from the August 31, 2009 edition: The following 2009 Paramedic Awards were given to the Medic employees below. In the pervious edition, the names were switched. Congratulations Luis and J!

Luis Barrera - Outstanding Graduate Award J. Conroy - Academic Excellence Award

Please join the Agency in congratulating Susan Davis in CMED for recently being released from training. Susan completed her EMD/EFD certifications and has proven her proficiency in all areas of her assigned duties. Susan is the first to “graduate” from the recently revised training process suggested from a CMED focus group and de-signed mostly by front line employees and trainers. Susan will be permanently assigned to A – Days.

Congratulations to Susan Davis!

CPCC Training: Crime Scene Preservation & Ballistics - Injury for EMS

On September 29th, Central Piedmont Community College will be holding a one day course on Crime Scene Preservation and Ballis-

tics geared toward EMS professionalism. The one day course will take place at the CPCC North Campus from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm in Room CJ139.

The course will discuss firearm related injuries and distance determinations (with both gunshot residues and shotgun pattern

analysis). Instructors will focus on applying various scientific methods, testing protocols, reproduction and comparison of gun-powder and primer residues in order to determine the muzzle-to-garment distance.

Additionally, the course will include various firearms related to injuries found on bodies and other mediums.

The course will be taught by Don Mikko, Chief, Firearms Branch, US Army Crime Lab and Medic’s own EMS Fellow, Dr.

Rosalyn Reades.

If you are interested in registering for the course, please contact Andrea June at CPCC - (704) 330 - 4109 or [email protected].

CMPD has expressed concerns about Medic employees leaving their uniforms unattended in their vehicles. They thought this may promote a break in, especially if your car is parked in a public place.

CMPD’s most serious concern is that a stolen Medic uniform could be used to get through security at places such as hospitals.

Medic agrees with CMPD’s concerns. We ask that all employees take action to keep their uniforms secure. Uniforms should be concealed or covered whenever a vehicle is left unattended in a public place.

We thank you for your cooperation! If you have any questions or concerns please contact your immediate supervisor.
