Every year, EMS Magazine awards one full time EMS Agency in the country with its Gold Service Award. The magazine solicits entries from Agencies nationwide and chooses a winner based on criteria that they feel is critical to a successful EMS Agency. Their goal is to recognize an Agency that stands out among its peers and highlight the practices that place that particular Agency among the very best in EMS. We are proud to announce that EMS Magazine has chosen MEDIC as THE 2009 Gold Award winner! This award was based on Medic’s documented performance and protocols as they pertain to the following criteria: • Innovations in pre-hospital care • EMS system/program upgrades • EMS-related certification of personnel • Worker safety and well-being programs • Innovations in EMS education and training • Medical community involvement • Injury- and illness-prevention projects • Public-education projects

This award is a direct reflection of the work each and every one of you does on a daily basis. The information that was provided to the judging panel at EMS Magazine highlighted the hard work and results of the employees here at Medic, and that is what won this award. This award should illicit a sense of pride by every employee in this Agency because without you and your commitment to patient care – this award simply could not happen. Performance Pay Update

Month one of the current Performance Pay tracking period is in the books. Every category with the exception of patient satisfaction is tracking on target. Though this is a good start, patient satisfaction is a particularly important component of the performance pay program because its one of the triggers that must be hit in order for any of the payouts to occur this period. There are still two months left in this tracking period, so don’t give up. Keep using AIDET in the field. Treat every patient and family encounter as a customer service experience. Talk each other up, communicate effectively with everyone you encounter and treat people how you would like your family member to be treated; the rest will take care of itself. Hospital turn times are worth watching in the coming months. We only made the target by an average of 30 seconds. There are a number of people who have turn times that are inexplicably long while others manage to consistently get in and out of the hospitals within the 35 minute goal regardless of the type or quantity of calls they are running. Remember, slow turn times negatively impact patient care and punish your co-workers in the field who have to run that much harder covering for you. Another update regarding the performance pay program will be posted around the 15th of this month. Keep up the hard work

everyone.

CPCC Training: Crime Scene Preservation & Ballistics - Injury for EMS

On September 29th, Central Piedmont Community College will be holding a one day course on Crime Scene Preservation and Bal-

listics geared toward EMS professionalism. The one day course will take place at the CPCC North Campus from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm in Room CJ139.

The course will discuss firearm related injuries and distance determinations (with both gunshot residues and shotgun pattern

analysis). Instructors will focus on applying various scientific methods, testing protocols, reproduction and comparison of gun-powder and primer residues in order to determine the muzzle-to-garment distance. Additionally, the course will include vari-ous firearms related to injuries found on bodies and other mediums.

The course will be taught by Don Mikko, Chief, Firearms Branch, US Army Crime Lab and Medic’s own EMS Fellow, Dr. Rosa-

lyn Reades.

If you are interested in registering for the course, please contact Andrea June at CPCC - (704) 330 - 4109 or [email protected].

Below is a message from Kim Kuriger, Medic’s Occupational Health Nurse, regarding Medic’s Comprehensive Well-ness Program. Surveys will be placed in all employee mailboxes - or please pick one up from Kim Kuriger:

Mecklenburg EMS Agency is in the final process of starting a Comprehensive Wellness Program and your input is needed! You can help by completing a short wellness survey. The survey is completely anonymous, and it should only take you a few min-utes.

It's very important that we hear from everyone in order to make our new wellness program successful. This will give me a chance to find employees that are interested in being involved on the wellness committee and what most interests you in your wellness program. So, please complete your survey today, and urge your co- workers to do the same!

Please submit your survey to the Occupational Health Nurse/Risk and Safety office no later than September 18th, 2009.

Upcoming: We will be in a need for a Brand (Slogan) for wellness and a Logo. If you are talented in drawing or poetry (slogan) there will be a contest coming shortly. The Winning Brand and Logo will be determined by the Wellness committee.

Thank you very much! - Kim Kuriger, RN

Comprehensive Wellness Program Update

It’s official! One of the new BLS ambulances, or Sprinters, has hit the streets of Mecklenburg County as of Friday, September 11th. The new Sprinter made its first appearance at a local high school football game. The Sprinter finally was outfitted for a

safe weight for our employees to use, and Operations is patiently awaiting the arrival of the last seven.

The Sprinter will be added to the rotation as of this week for BLS transports. If anyone has a question about the Sprinter, please see your supervisor immediately. In addition, if you would like to check out a copy of the Sprinter introduction video, please contact your supervisor as well.

Operations is extremely excited to see the Sprinters finally hit the road and are awaiting feedback from our BLS crews. If you have any questions or concerns about the Sprinters, please contact Bryan Edwards at 6130.

Congratulations to ALL Employees who received commendations for the month of August!

PLEASE READ: Uniform Policy Update

Medic has recently completed a revision to the Agency’s Uniform Policy. This revised policy will officially take effect on Monday, October 12th at 12:01 am. The 30 day period between now and October 12th has been instated to give employees time to digest and adjust to the changes in the policy as needed.

A copy of the new policy was emailed to you on Friday, September 11. Please take the time to review it thoroughly so you can make any necessary adjustments over the next cou-ple of weeks.

Please note that the uniform has not and is not changing. This is simply a rewrite of the existing policy that was needed to tighten up some loose ends and bring it up to date. In fact, many of the adjustments were made based upon feedback from employees who felt some of the peers were taking advantage of the existing policy in a way that did not reflect well on the Agency. This policy will be enforced for all employees; the intent is simply to ensure that every Medic employee presents themselves in as professional a manner as possible each and every day. If you have any questions or concerns, please direct them to your Supervisor, Debbie Parrish (6223), or Richard Dean (6053).
