Training Schedule 8

Medic Calendar 8

On Wednesday, October 28th EMS Magazine will be presenting Medic with the 2009 Gold Service Award during opening ceremonies at the National EMS Expo in Atlanta, GA. In honor of this outstanding accomplishment, which is reflective of the hard work and effort put forth by Medic’s employees, we are taking a busload of Medic employees to Atlanta for the day so that as many people as possible can share in this fantastic event.

Medic has chartered a 55 person bus for the day to take employees to and from the expo. The itinerary (as it stands right now) for the day is as follows: • Leave Medic’s rear parking lot at 4:45 am • Arrive at The World Congress Center in Atlanta, GA at 9:30 am • Receive the Gold Service Award at 10:15 AM in a public ceremony • Walk the EMS Expo show floor and/or attend information sessions from 10:30 am – 3 pm • Catch the bus back to Medic 3:30 pm - Arrive back at Medic 8:00 pm

Important Details of Interest • October 28th is an “A shift” day – unfortunately that pretty much precludes those working on the “A shift” from attending – I wish there was a solution to the 24 hour nature of our business but there isn’t

• This is NOT a paid day – employees who attend will be doing so on their own time

• EVERY employee of Medic who has the ability to do so is encouraged to attend – just check with your manager if you work in the front office to get the day off

• Medic will provide everyone who attends with breakfast on the trip there and dinner on the ride home (lunch at the expo is up to you)

• EMS Magazine is providing free show passes for everyone who attends – we will have free reign of the show, exhibits and learning sessions

• All interested participants must email Jeff Keith to enter the Lottery by Friday, October 16th (put Gold Awards in the title line please)

• The 55 people attending on Medic’s behalf will be chosen by lottery on Monday, October 19 – the final list will be posted and distributed

• Any Medic employee who wears a uniform as a part of their Job will be required to wear their uniform to this event (think photo opportunity for EMS Magazine!)

(Cont.) Medic Gold Award Trip to Atlanta

Anyone who can’t go will still get the chance to share in the celebration – the local celebration/media event will be held here at Medic on a B-shift day so the A-shift employees can participate

If you have any questions, please drop me a note. Again, I apologize that due to the nature of our 24 hour business everyone will not have the same chance to participate. It is my goal to try and stagger any such Agency wide celebrations on different shift days whenever possible to give everyone the opportunity to enjoy them.

One last thing - EMS Magazine just published their October issue announcing Medic as this year’s Gold Service Award win-ner. You can check out the article online at: http://www.emsresponder.com/print/EMS-Magazine/National-Award-Winners/1$10586. I also have some hard copies in my office if you would like to swing by and see it for yourself. I hope to receive many, many emails from employees interested in participating. Please keep your eyes open for more com-munications about this trip over the next couple of weeks.

Employee ROSC Recognition Event

Medic employees do some amazing things each and every day. EMS Magazine recognized the entire Agency for just this rea-son. On a more local level – we are getting ready to do some celebrating specific to the success we have with some of the most serious cases we see in this community on a pretty regular basis – sudden cardiac arrests. On November 5th, 2009 Medic is hosting a recognition event at CPCC to celebrate the Agency’s success with achieving ROSC (return of spontaneous circulation) in sudden cardiac arrest patients. We have been consistently tracking such data since Jan 1, 2007. We are going to recognize every Medic field and CMED employee who had a hand in at least one ROSC from Jan 1, 2007 – Dec 31 2008. This encompasses roughly 250 Medic employees – some of which had a hand in one save while oth-ers participated in as many as ten! Our goal is to make this an annual event. This first recognition event will take place at CPCC’s Halton Theater. It will be in the evening and last for two hours. It will be public and include first responder partners, both hospital systems and members of city, county and state government. This event should garner strong media attention as well – a good thing for Medic’s image in the community overall. Invitations are arriving in mailboxes today and should contain most of the details you will be seeking. Unfortunately, budget constraints did not allow us to invite everyone in the Agency to the event on November 5th. That is why we are hosting a second event here at Medic the following week (details will follow later). Everyone with an ROSC save will be recognized between the two events. The invitation list for the November 5th event includes those with an ROSC save, their supervisors, those involved with train-ing, the OAs and the QI team. I apologize that we do not have the resources to invite everyone to the November 5th event – but again – we will have a second recognition event here at Medic the following week which will be open to anyone who does not get to attend the initial event on November 5th. We do some incredible work here at Medic, and we are intent on celebrating the success of Medic employees the best way we can despite the challenges associated with the 24/7 nature of our business. I wish we could simply host everyone at one event, but the nature of our business simply won’t allow that to occur. Everyone will get the chance to be recognized at one of the two events (1 at CPCC, 1 the following week at Medic), which is the best we can do under the circumstances. If you have any questions – please contact either Jeff Keith (6160) or Kristin Young (6165). Keep your eyes out for additional communications about this event in the future.

Stroup and Ward Participate in State Paramedic Competition

On Sunday, October 4th, Steven Ward and John Stroup traveled to Greensboro, NC to compete in the State Paramedic Competition to represent Medic for the 2nd year in a row. Even though John and Steven didn’t take home the top prize at the competition, they definitely put up a great fight and were one of the top contenders.

This past July, Steven and John qualified for the State Championship by winning the regional paramedic competition. The team beat out other agencies from around

the region including Lincoln, Davidson, Cabarrus, Surry, Caldwell and McDowell Counties. This was the second regional victory for the team.

Medic would like to congratulate both Steven and John on winning the regional title again this year and for their outstanding performance and team work in the State Competition last weekend. When you see John and Steven please congratulate them on their efforts to bring the title to Medic.

The latest results for the first tracking period of the Performance Pay Program are in! Everything is still on target with the exception of Patient Satisfaction. On the bright side, Patient Satisfaction continue to tick upward. We have not yet begun to receive data from September’s polling, so keep working hard and focus on those patient and family interactions.

We only need to see a 3 % increase in Patient Satisfaction over the next 6 weeks to hit this target—a very achievable target if

everyone stays focused on it.

If you have any questions or concerns about the Performance Pay Program, feel free to speak with your Supervisor or Jeff Keith anytime.

Medic Financial Standing vs. Budget: ON TARGET Agency Driver Safety Scoring Average: 8

Patient Satisfaction: 62 % Response Time Compliance: P1 = 97.15%; P2 = 97.82%; P3 = 97.40%

Hospital Turn Times: 34:29 CMED MPDS Compliance: 97.15%

Performance Pay Update — Results Through October 2, 2009

We have heard the requests over the past few weeks to examine the

way the Agency allows personnel off for the holidays; Thanksgiving,

Christmas & New Years Eve.

With this in mind, we need volunteers to take on the responsibility of

examining the policy and making the recommended changes in the

way we decide who gets the day(s) off.

If you’re interested in helping out, we’ll hold a workgroup within the

next week to look at the policy and make any proposed changes.

Please contact Bryan Edwards at 704.943.6130 or email at

[email protected] for more information.

Paramedic Crew Chief /BLS Team Leader Orientat ion

A year ago during the early morning hours of October 8, 2008, Kristi Gouch, a mother of four, called 911 because she was in labor with her fifth child and her and

her husband didn’t believe she would make it to the hospital. Communications Supervisor Janine Curlee was the dispatcher on the call and helped walk Kristi and her husband Harvey through the first steps of a home birth. However, the Medic crew of Brian Krischbaum and Kim Dixon arrived before Kristi gave birth to her

fifth child.

When they arrived, both Brian and Kim knew that Kristi would not make it to the hospital and they prepared to deliver Kristi’s child right away. As soon as Brian and Kim could get the OB kit set up, Brian and Kim helped Kristi deliver a healthy baby girl - name Elizabeth Anne. This was the

13th baby that Brian had delivered while working at Medic and the 2nd baby that Kim has delivered.

On Thursday, October 8, 2009, Janine, Brian and Kim helped baby Elizabeth celebrate her first birthday at the place she was born, the Gouch’s house. They brought balloons and a gift for Elizabeth and met the entire Gouch family. Ladder 31 also joined the re-

union as well.

Thanks to the Gouch family for reaching out to Medic to try to find the crew that deliv-ered Elizabeth Ann a year ago! And congratulations to Brian, Kim and Janine on a suc-cessful baby delivery.

If you have any stories that you would like to share or if you would like to reunite with a patient or their family, please contact the Public Relations Department at ext: 6165.

PLEASE READ: Contacting Gaston Memorial or Northeast Medical When contacting Gaston Memorial or Northeast Medical for an in bound patient you will need to call via phone. There are two ways to do this: 1) Call the E.D. direct on the cell phone provided at: Gaston Memorial - 704-834-2790 Northeast Medical - 704-403-1269 2) Call CMED and asked to be transferred to the appropriate E.D. – This is a one button transfer that CMED can get you into the triage desk.

There is a GASTON and NORTHEAST talk group in the mobile and portable radios, however this is a “placeholder” for a future talk group on the state-wide or appropriate neighboring radio system that will be available shortly (after re-banding). The GASTON and NORTHEAST talk group in your radios will not work at this time. There have been several transports to Gaston and Northeast in which encodes were attempted on the radio and the facilities have not been notified of in bound patients. If you have any questions, please contact your immediate supervisor or Todd Simms ([email protected]).
