WHAT IS MEDIADUMP
DAVIDMARREIROSmediadump :: designdepot, photopile & videovault
owned by DAVIDMARREIROS :: commissioned by EU Erasmus Mundus :: Location: Helsinki, Finland
you ought to give me a shot in the head for making you enter in this dump (*)
mediadump comes from the vaults of thought; it is a mentaldump/minddump that, as disgusting as it might sound, to some degree hopes to be filled with some kind of mentaldiarrhea (i.e, idearrhea) that simply assumes form through media and finds its place in Helsinki, Finland. In that sense, fields that in not mine are being contaminated in a location where I am a foreigner, but to which I feel somehow related. At the same time, mediadump wishes to mark the beginning of a new era; a time of experimentalism and creative boom that needs to be understood as something closed in its own time and location, born from something opposite that can be defined as mentalconstipation. Also it shouldn’t be seen as a rebirth, but instead as a raise of latent concepts previously resting behind bars.
o qual me sinto de algum modo ligado.

A BALANCE OUT OF BALANCE
Balance –noun: a state of equilibrium or equipoise; equal distribution of weight, amount, etc. ; something
used to produce equilibrium; counterpoise; mental steadiness or emotional stability; habit of calm behavior,
judgment, etc. ; the act of balancing; comparison as to weight, amount, importance, etc. ; estimate; Fine Arts:
composition or placement of elements of design, as figures, forms, or colors, in such a manner as to produce
an aesthetically pleasing or harmoniously integrated whole; Dance: a balancing movement.
Makes sense to recall the definition of this concept after five months abroad emerged in a totally different society and culture than mine. Why? After that is obviously smart to make a balance out of it but especially this notion of balance, and probably its antonym as well, fits like a glove to explain all the experience kindly commissioned by the European Union in Helsinki, Finland.Just as a start, compared to Portugal, Finland is a totally different habitat. As well, in terms of education methodologies I faced a different environment as well as the possibility to develop work in other fields that I had never entered before or at least not as deep. Apart from the opportunity to acquire new tools and new ways to work that I didn’t had before the best outcome was the freedom given by that. Now I feel I have new roads to explore and to work on.So, even if all the experience had left me a bit out of balance in the sense that I was immerged in a quite different path, at the same time it gave more balance in the sense that I feel more complete than I felt before. I have more things cycling around my head, something in quite a mess, but now they are there and they were not before. At the same, the freedom that this kind of balance could gave me changed in quite a lot the attachment I have with my work and with my way of thinking. In fact, this whole concept and attitude of mediadump comes from there and is based on all those conceptions. It’s the perfect image: It is a dump full of trash inside that hopes to get even more whenever it can, as well as my mind. Then in the middle of all you are able to get rid of the excess and keep what is useful for you and to use in the future.mediadump::minddump

Equilíbrio s. m. Estado de um corpo que se mantém, ainda que solicitado ou impelido por forças opostas;

A PICTURE OF LIFE BARBRO As a look inside life through photos of a lifetime, A Picture of Life is a project that wants to grow and find more people on the way to tell their life story and who they are. By that matter, its a portrait of humans and an analysis to memory, time and to the value of photography itself. In the end, appart from being a celebration of the present through memory, it is merely a talk among friends on a regular weekend afternoon.

XX HEART COMPASS Sound visualizer developed to suit “The XX” band songs from “XX” album more specifically song “Heart Skipped A Beat”. Beat Reaction + mouse movement & mouse dragging interaction. ¶ Addition and subtraction; multiplication and division; emotion and rationality; desire and fray; beat and direction: the heart and the compass.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
THETA INTROVERT FEELING = MORALITY We live to follow the life of others: A critic, a speech, a instruction of a doctrine or system of morals. We are doomed to be controlled. ¶ We are born to live our own life: We live to find a balance, a harmony, a mid-point where we can meet and feel; No moral stands in the left, or in the right, neither in front or back. ¶ Our own life sets the life of others: We are doomed to control; we are doomed to try to be the moral. In those days there was no king in Israel. Every man did that which was right in his own eyes. Book of Judges 21:25 :: INTROVERT SENSATION = PASSION A compelling emotion, a strong amorous feeling, a sexual desire, a crescent enthusiasm of lust; a passion to love and to hate. ¶ A strong or extravagant fondness, an enthusiasm and desire for anything; a need to feel everything through any way; a passion for music. ¶ An intense felling, an intense emotion, a urge to live or die; a passion to be. Something external affects me but still, inside, warm water runs deep.

No final, à parte
A Beat”. Reacção ao ritmo + interactividade ao movimento e arrastamento
do rato. ¶ A adição e a subtracção; a multiplicação e a divisão; a emoção e
a racionalidade; o desejo e o combate; o ritmo e a direcção: o coração e a
rosa-dos-ventos.
um desejo e tudo e nada; uma necessidade de sentir tudo de todas as maneiras;
Algo externo ainda me afecta
mas, interiormente, água quente corre bem fundo.
Exercícios em Adobe Flash CS4; website, animações e poster interactivo.
Um logótipo que grita espírito americano e energia desportiva; força e poder;

THE THEME IS HELSINKI 34O: ESSAY ON TRIANGLE, RECTANGLE AND CIRCLE :: WHILE YOU ARE WAITING FOR YOURSELF :: WELCOME TO GOTHAM CITY Portraits from the city of Helsinki according different perspectives: the social shape and mentality structure; the people, everyday life and routine; and the city itself and night.

WE ARE PLASTIC: STILL LIFES Photographic tests using Infra-red photography. Life and the the absence of life.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
URBAN ETHNOGRAPHY ONE MINUTE AFTER HELSINKI Finland; the notion of time and punctuality. ¶ As a social point of view, one minute after helsinki wants to give a impression of Finnish society but through external eyes, i.e., eyes from another culture. Basically, what is set is a contrast between two cultures that converges in a common photograph. In this case, the contrast between Finnish society and me, that, in a wider angle, represents Portuguese society. ¶ In its core, one minute after helsinki is a duel between an analysis and a critic; between the past, the present and the future; a duel about time itself and its correlation with society. Also, it arises two questions. It exposes quite clearly the question of punctuality and present time. But, on the other hand the title opens the question to whether the project itself wants to be a step further than the others, as a self-critic (or a overvaluation). ¶ But still everything is quite submerged in darkness, quite hidden, quite unrevealed. Everything is quite boring, quite straight, quite symmetric. On the other hand, something is a detail to look at; something disturbs the perfect symmetry, something is alwaysone minute after helsinki.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
URBAN ETHNOGRAPHY FEEL FREE TO BE A PRISONER INSIDE THE AMAZING MAZE THAT OUR MIND IS TELL ME WHICH MOVIES YOU HAD SEEN AND I WILL TELL YOU WHICH PHOBIAS DO YOU HAVE Pictures taken inside of our minds; pictures of our minds. A camera that moves along our internal tunnels and get lost in the labyrinth that together they construct. ¶ Emptiness all around, just few things standing by, but the eager and curiosity to discover still remains deep as the light keeps unveiling everything the darkness conceals. ¶ Enter inside your mind at your own risk and discover the ways to drive through. feel free to be a prisoner inside the amazing maze that our mind is. If not, just tell me which movies you had seen and I will tell you which phobias do you have.

e estrutura mental; pessoas, quotidiano e rotina; a própria cidade e a noite.
amplo, representa a sociedade portuguesa.
a sociedade.
escondido, oculto. Tudo parece um pouco aborrecido, recto, simétrico. No
breu oculta.
Senão, apenas diz-me quais os
filmes que viste e eu te direi que fobias tens.

URBAN ETHNOGRAPHY WE LIKE TO WATCH T.V. WHILE WE ARE HAVING DINNER BECAUSE IT IS NOT OUR CUSTOM TO GO WHERE WE ARE NOT WANTED TWENTY ONE CHANNELS, TWENTY FIVE CHANNELS & FOURTEEN CHANNELS Polish anthropologist and pioneer in the field of ethnography, Bronisław Malinowski once wrote: “I suddenly realized with outstanding clarity that to understand people you cannot rely upon what they say or they do. Instead you must rely upon yourself, watching and seeing what they do.” ¶ Malinowski’s work was essentially based on observation as a way to understand the different culture where he was immerged on. As him, I was also living on a different culture from my own. So, adopting the same observational method, I put myself at stake and started looking at other peoples life through the windows of my house. ¶ we like to watch T.V. is a analysis of Finnish culture and society based on the question of space, more precisely, private/personal space. Even if the act itself is quite arguable or even totally incorrect in a moral sense it was incredible for me to notice that all the other people around me were more interested in the life I was watching than myself. After this, the whole project turned the other way around. It was not about the persons living on the T.V. channels anymore. I was never trying to understand the people I was watching. Instead, I realized that I was studying all the other people that I was not watching, i.e., society and humans themselves. ¶ This was when Malinowski’s writings made sense and the whole project acquired an anthropological, ethnographic and documental value. In fact, I believe the value that this project might have stands more on that than in photography itself. Photography was only the instrument to record. we like to watch T.V. is a document, a study, an essay; a kind of documental experiment about the matter of privacy and the correlation with the inherent human curiosity. ¶ In that sense, the project has to be seen as well as a way to personal analysis and critic about yourself and your relation with the private space of others, your own private space, the public space and with your own desire, curiosity and perversion. Because always we like to watch T.V. while we are having dinner because it is not our custom to go where we are not wanted.

Antropólogo polaco e pioneiro no campo da etnografia, Bronisław Malinowski,
escreveu: “I suddenly realized with outstanding clarity that to understand
people you cannot rely upon what they say or they do. Instead you must rely
upon yourself, watching and seeing what they do.”
¶ we like to watch
de registo. we like to watch T.V.
próprio espaço privado, o espaço público e a o teu próprio desejo, curiosidade
desejados.
