Rozhan lauded for social

responsibilityAstro boss takes home CNBC Asia biz leader award

Dato’ Rohana Rozhan, chief executive of Malaysian pay-TV platform Astro, has won the Corporate Social Responsibility Award at the 12th annual CNBC Asia Business Leaders Awards (ABLA).

The award earlier this month recognises Rozhan’s devotion to issues in education, environment and society, as well as “in-tegrating social responsibility into business objectives”.

Other win-ners include The Appren-tice Asia’s Tony Fernandes, group chief executive of budget airline AirAsia, who took home the Asia Innovator of the Year Award.

The award ceremony airs on CNBC at 8pm (HK/Sin) on 28 November.

Fox Japan in record-busting NCIS telecast

China’s Jiangsu Satellite TV has picked up rights to All3media International’s factual entertainment format, Gogglebox.

The eight-episode mainland Chinese version, produced in-house, will pre-miere early next year.

This marks Jiangsu’s first-ever deal with the indie distributor, and follows a Dragon TV deal for a local version of Undercover Boss.

Gogglebox features local home viewers’ reactions and opinions of the week’s TV highlights. The format has been nominated at the 2013 Grierson Awards and Edinburgh Television Festi-val’s Programme Innovation Award.

Fox International Channels’ (FIC) Fox Japan entertainment channel begins a marathon 234-episode NCIS telecast on 29 December in an effort to bust its previous Guinness World Record for the longest uninterrupted transmission of a television series.

Fox Japan set the previous record in January 2011 with the back-to-back tel-ecast of all seven seasons of 24, starring Keifer Sutherland as counter terrorist unit agent Jack Bauer.

The NCIS marathon runs to 8 January. Fox Japan premieres the new season

of the CBS Studios’ crime procedural in February 2014.

Satellite operator SES has entered the final countdown to the launch of new satellite SES-8, which goes up on Tues-day morning (26 November, Asia).

If successful, the launch not only puts additional Ku-/Ka-band capacity above Asia, but also opens a new era of shorter, more cost effective paths to space.

The commercial communications sat-ellite, with coverage of South Asia and Asia Pacific, will be co-located with the SES-owned NSS-6 at 95º East.

The new satellite is one of seven satellites SES plans to operate in the region by 2015.

The launch from SpaceX’s complex at Cape Canaveral is the Falcon 9 rocket’s seventh flight, and its first communications satellite launched to geostationary orbit by SpaceX.

TVB, Next Media spat

Hong Kong’s dominant broadcaster, Television Broadcasts Ltd (TVB) and Jimmy Lai’s Next Media are locked in combat. TVB has accused Next Media’s publications of, among other things, inaccurate reporting, and banned Next journalists from press conferences and events. Next denies the allegations, saying all it was doing was telling the truth about the uproar over Hong Kong’s free-TV licence process and related events.

Who’s saying what about content trends in Asia ahead of this year’s ATF...

Asian audiences are really embracing the factual entertainment

genre right now. It’s been a slow burner, but the demand is growing.”

Marielle Zuccarelli, Managing Director, International Content Distribution, A+E Networks

It is still the big branded reality entertainment shows

that are eagerly sought after in Asia.”

Ganesh Rajaram, Executive Vice Presi-dent, Distribution and Home Entertainment,

The key acquisitions trend this year has been the

development of the VOD market particularly in

China, Korea and Japan. There is a higher level of interest in

U.K. drama from these territories than in Southeast Asia.”

Stephen Driscoll, Senior Vice President, Sales,

All3Media

“While these event-driven, serialised shows have had strong interest, there continues to be a strong demand for good procedurals – stand-alone episodes work for many of our clients.”

Nicole Sinclair, Director of Sales, Asia, CBS Studios International

Asia is seeing unprecedented local productions of both

international and inter-Asian

formats.”

Joanne Azzopardi, Vice President Sales

Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Beyond Distribution

We have seen a definite increase

crime, demand for lifestyle pro-

gramming has con-tinued to rise over the past

12 months.” Chris Bluett, Sales Manager, Asia, Cineflix Rights

“Wildlife and animal pro-grammes remain universal for all territories in Asia. Lately we have seen an increase in interest towards all things related to ‘pets’. Military/weapons/disasters

are also topics of interest nowadays.”

MeeFung Lee, DW Asia Representative, DW Transtel

“Shiny floor entertainment shows still seem to lead the ratings in most Asian territories.”

Kelly Wright, Director International Sales, Asia, Keshet International

“The biggest content acquisition trend has to be the demand for formats.”

Tokyo Broadcasting System’s (TBS) bank-ing drama, Hanzawa Naoki, has reignited the Japanese drama craze in Taiwan and is making its way around the rest of the region.

The critically acclaimed, 10-episode series attracted 550,000 viewers for its 7 October 2013 premiere on Taiwanese pay-TV network Videoland Japan.

In Hong Kong, pay-TV channel TVB Drama 1 began airing the series on 16 No-vember 2013 on a Saturday 11pm slot.

Hong Kong’s dominant free-TV broad-caster, Television Broadcasts Ltd (TVB) is also rumoured to be in talks for a local remake of the show about a charismatic young banker who navigates his way

through the politics, scandals and power struggles of the banking industry.

Masato Sakai stars as Hanzawa Naoki, whose bravery in challenging authorities and unique style of handling conflicts have made him a poster boy for office workers.

The TV drama is adapted from a novel by former bank employee Jun Ikeido. The use of technical banking terms and proc-esses is said to give the show more realism and help popularise a niche genre.

Hanzawa Naoki ran on TBS from July to September this year. The show’s final episode in Japan on 22 September 2013 garnered 42.2% viewership share, break-ing a three-decade record for Japan’s highest-rated programme.

Other comedy and drama titles ac-quired so far include Cheers, The A-Team, Murder She Wrote, Mad About You, Mar-ried With Children, Taxi and Star Trek – The Next Generation.

and Nashville, after 10pm. The prime-time strategy involves themes

such as fashion/glamour (Supermodelme + America’s Next Top Model on Wednes-days in Nov) and sci-fi/fantasy (Grimm + Touch on Sundays, Nov). The strategy has

not changed much from June to Novem-ber 2013. In June, ‘popular’ crime ran on Tuesdays, with ‘niche’ crime on Fridays.

Monday night is the big local drama night, with 50th anniversary series, period drama Mata Mata, in the 8pm slot.

Nat Geo People on its way to Asia: Here’s one to look for-ward to: the launch of Nat Geo People in Asia in the next few months. We don’t have many details yet and there’s nothing officially announced out of Fox International Channels (FIC) Asia HQ in Hong Kong.

But we hear that, like elsewhere in the world, Nat Geo People will

replace Nat Geo Adventure in Asia in early 2014 in HD, linear and non-linear formats.

The global announcement, made out of Washington at the end of September this year, bills the new brands as offering “unfiltered, intimate access to the true, amazing and inspiring stories of real people all over the world”.

FIC bosses in As ia have been shopping around for suitable content ever since to add to global acquisitions such as David Rocco’s Dolce

Vita with celeb chef David Rocco, and Hook, Line & Sis-ters, about fishing duo Sierra and Memry competing in the high-stakes, male-dominated world of commercial fishing.

We’re thinking that some of the series that will air in other parts of the world – like Ladyboys, which “follows the connection between British expats and their ladyboy lovers in Thailand as they navigate new and unique relationships” – probably won’t make it out here. But you never know...
