LIGHT UP THE TOWER There are many people who live in the village, some

within sight of the church tower for whom it is a landmark of significance, often as a memorial to loved ones

particularly when floodlit.

Jane Pover requested that the tower be floodlit on

1st and 2nd July.

“In loving memory of dear Laurence”

If you would like to take the opportunity to light up the church tower at some time to mark an anniversary, a celebration or in memory of a loved one, you could do so for £30 a night. This could also include a

dedication in Village News.

Please contact Sylvia Woodward on 883914 or Jane Sankey, 883212.

Abbreviations and locations: MH = Memorial Hall, at the junction of Long Mill Lane and the A25, CR = Memorial Hall Committee Room, GR = Garden Room (attached to the church) Stonehouse Field – signposted from Long Mill Lane near the Memorial Hall. * indicates further details elsewhere in this issue.

LETTER FROM THE VICAR Hello,

For this month’s letter I would like to take the opportunity to pick up on this discussion of the Black Lives Matter conversation that you can access from our website https://www.achurchnearyou.com/church/16926/news/22991/black-lives-matter/. The British contributors were Professor Anthony Reddie and Selina Stone, Tutor and Lecturer in Political Theology at St Mellitus College.

In this conversation Anthony Reddie defends the bringing down of the Colston statue in Bristol, pointing out that for many years people petitioned for the statue to be removed; that around 2018, people tried for a compromise, asking for a plaque to give the full picture of links with the slave trade. This didn’t work but what did work was a crowd that was provoked to action by the energy of the Black Lives Matter movement; the statue came down. For Anthony Reddie this was prophetic action and those who object to the statue coming down are placing property above black people’s pain. He relates this to churches’ failure to bring justice for the poor because they bend towards the importance of property over people; churches valuing orderliness over prophetic action. I was a person who didn’t entirely approve of crowds pulling down statues. My instant reaction was that they were lucky no one was hurt. I was failing to weigh up the risk of the moment against the risk of carrying on as things were. So, for me, Anthony Reddie’s message is uncomfortable listening, it hits close to home, it leaves me wrestling with my conscience.

Fortunately, Anthony Reddie and Selina Stone also have relatively simple recommendations for how to move forward:

• Learn about the work done on racism and ways forward that black people have already produced. For white ‘allies’ of the Black Lives Matter movement, there is the caution that white people will never know more about racism than black people, just because they have read a book on it.

• Constant dialogue between white and black people; a walking alongside that respects the need for healing.

• When you encounter racism through attitudes or ways of working, challenge it.

• Never undervalue the significance of your own ability to act.

• Don’t allow the opportunities of this moment to pass once it is out of the news headlines.

CHURCH NOTES Revd Lorraine sends a weekly updated e mail to anyone who would be interested in the Sunday service and weekday Morning Prayer services, all held by Zoom at the moment. All our Zoom activities are at https://zoom.us/j/2749958875 with the password ‘worship’.

Please share this invitation with anyone you know who may be interested.

If you know someone who does not use the computer and would like to join our service on the phone please ask them to ring me on 01732 882 447 and I can arrange to post details and instructions through their letterbox.

Here are the details for participating in online worship. You will be able to control whether you are seen and/or heard from your screen so do what is comfortable. Do remember that if you join with audio and video turned on, we will be able to see/hear what’s going on around you. I record the service to share online so if you don’t want to be recorded please select mute and turn your video off. (You should still be able to see and hear me.) If you don't want to receive these emails, just let me know.

Revd Lorraine Turner, Vicar, 01732 882447

This opens up a number of possibilities at Platt. Are there people up for learning together, engaging in dialogue? How can our church structures be made more diverse? A great start would be for people to listen to the conversation, come together and share their responses. Do let me know when you have engaged with the material as it would be great to set something up.

God bless,

Lorraine

VILLAGE NEWS DELIVERER REQUIRED – ONE DAY

SOON! Sue Collings has been delivering copies of Village News magazines around Paddock Close and Potash Lane for many years. For family reasons she will have to continue to shield and isolate for the foreseeable future and will be unable to deliver paper copies of the magazine when we are able to produce them again. She is a very keen gardener, so admits she will particularly miss seeing so many gardens on her rounds.

Thank you very much, Sue, for doing this delivery for so many years and our very best wishes for the safety and health of your family.

FROM THE EDITOR There are many words and phrases we have become used to hearing and using over the last few months – stay well, stay safe, stay home, save lives, help the NHS, social distancing, isolating, furlough, fear, loneliness, boredom, volunteers, deliveries of prescriptions and groceries, clapping for the NHS, care and key workers. But also into the conversations have been added - rainbows, the joy of hot summer days, birdsong, gardening, needing rain and ‘how many days till I can get a haircut’? As intense activities and busyness have slipped away something has taken their place, as nature abhors a vacuum. Time. The subject has come up in conversation very often in recent weeks, the time to get to know others better. Be it someone you know well, a family member, a father now working from home having the opportunity to spend more time getting to know his children better than he ever has before, even married couples getting to know one another better. I have heard from several people delighted that they have had long and interesting conversations with those who live near them, to whom in the past they would only have said a quick ‘Hello’ in passing.

One of the great topics of conversation in Platt has been Claire Metcalfe’s brilliant teddy bear tableaux. There was the suggestion that we might put teddy bears visibly in front windows for children to see as they were walking by. Claire took it to a new level and provided such interest and enjoyment. Do read her article on page 21. Thank you, Claire, for such wonderful displays at exactly the time when needed.

Life is gradually gathering speed again. I read someone’s comment that life will not be returning to normal until the pubs and churches are open again. Thanks to John Bagshaw, who is keeping us up to date with activities at the Blue Anchor, it is now open, within government guidelines. And now, after three months, the churches can open again. This has been the first period without the churches being open for public worship in England in more than 800 years. Platt church will soon be open for private prayer. It is hoped that this will be daily from Monday 6th July between 10.00 and 16.00. Entry will be by the south door (car park side) and there will be instructions on the door as to how to keep everyone safe. One day very soon we hope that public services will be held in in the church, albeit initially with a restricted number of people able to attend. Revds Chris and Lorraine Turner are keeping church services going by Zoom, Morning Prayer at 09.30 daily and the service of Holy Communion on Sundays at 10.30. We are very grateful to them; the services are appreciated by people from Platt and Borough Green.

Others have different priorities, such as retail therapy maybe, but in this village many people will be delighted that Platt Woods volunteers are

Scott Wishart has set up the Platt Woods Second World War local history trail for the summer, an activity definitely not to be missed (see page 20). Details are on the Platt Memorial Hall website, plattmemorialhall.org as are details of Scott’s video ‘Platt in Lockdown’, which has scored 4.2k views, quite astonishing for a short one and a half minute video about a village.

For four months we have been reeling from the impact of this virus, but as we begin to look ahead, what will be the legacy? Change never leaves you as it finds you, and this is a time, a change, like no other we have experienced.

In the month of July we pray to God…

…for the countries and peoples still affected by the coronavirus epidemic in this time of continuing uncertainty and distress.

…giving thanks for the improvement in this country and we pray for safety of all as the country opens up.

…for the leaders of the nations, scientists and all who bear the weight of the responsibility of decisions.

…for all NHS staff, carers, emergency services, and workers who selflessly risk their own health in their work.

…for staff and residents at Harpwood Care Home.

…giving thanks for all who give of their skills, energies, compassion and caring for others.

…for volunteers who have delivered medical and food supplies, gifts and everyday needs and carried out tasks with kindness in their communities.

…giving thanks for those we love, family and friends who walk beside us on our life journey and give us joy and support.

…and give thanks for the beauty and peace of the woodlands, quiet places and ‘thin’ places.

…for all who have lost loved ones and been unable to bid farewell as they would have wished. May your comfort and compassion be with those who ache with the pain of grief.

…to draw alongside those who are weak and vulnerable, hear the thoughts and prayers of those who do not have the words, just the longing.

(Continued on page 15)

PRAYER DIARY A beautiful prayer for this time of sickness and widespread anxiety comes from Canon Roly Riem, Vice-Dean at Winchester Cathedral:

Lord Jesus,

Who in your earthly life

Bore our grief and carried our sorrows,

Stand with us, we pray,

In our fear, distress and uncertainty.

Draw near to all who are suffering:

Strengthen those who care for them;

And guide those involved in research.

Lead us all, through the depths of the cross,

To the height and joy of resurrection.

Amen

PLATT SCHOOL NURSERY NEWS We hope that you are all keeping safe and well during this difficult time. Just to keep you all up to date with what we are doing… We have been assessing how and when to reopen but the present government guidelines put a lot of restrictions on what we can and can’t do in the nursery. For example, we can’t use a lot of the play equipment that we would normally use, no playdough, water, sand, dressing up clothes, soft toys and sharing of books, etc. Parents also wouldn’t be allowed on site at pick up or to settle their child at drop off time, so taking everything into consideration we have decided to delay reopening for the moment. At the time of writing we intend to review the situation at the end of the month with the hope that we can reopen in some form from the beginning of July; by then some of the restrictions may have eased a little. It is not a decision that we have taken lightly. We are all missing the children very much and the events that we would have arranged this term but it is all very surreal at the moment and obviously we want everyone to be safe.

I am still contactable by email and would love to hear of any activities you are enjoying at home or if you want any information about a place for September, so please feel free to contact me on: [email protected]

RECYCLING KCC’s Household Waste Recycling Centres reopened on Friday 15th May, on a booking only basis for emergency waste disposal. Please check here for details or visit https://www.kent.gov.uk/waste-planning-and-land/rubbish-and-recycling/visiting-a-hwrc-during-coronavirus.

Garden Waste – The service has restarted, so please put your garden bin out by 7am on your usual collection day. Please don’t overfill or compact the waste in the bins, as we may not be able to empty them.

Your subscription will be automatically extended to cover the three collections we were unable to carry out for you. T&MBC is sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Saturday bulky waste collection is still suspended.

The queue While waiting in a socially distanced queue early one morning for the supermarket to open for us ‘seniors’, I was surprised to see a young man saunter along and try to cut in at the front of the queue. A furious old lady waved her cane at him, and he quickly backed away. A moment later, the young man tried again. He managed to dodge the old lady, but then two old men started shouting at him. Again, the young man backed away. But he wasn’t giving up, and soon the young man approached the queue for the third time. By now, all of us pensioners were ready for him, an angry wall of opposition. The young man stood there for a moment, and then shrugged his shoulders. “If you people won’t let me unlock the door, none of you will ever get in to shop.”

HISTORY TRAIL For obvious reasons, the Platt Woods Second World War local history trail planned for earlier this year was postponed; however, we have now had the green light from the Parish Council and TMBC to site it in the woods for the summer – albeit with a couple of small changes. Those of you who remember the First World War trail in 2018 will recall that maps and answer sheets were available both online and also in the church entrance. This year, because of the Covid crisis, they will not be in the latter but can still be downloaded and printed out from our website at www.plattmemorialhall.org/historytrail.

As before, we have designed it with children in mind; however, as discovered last time, people of all ages enjoyed taking part, so of course, all are welcome. Naturally, if you are in the woods, and spot another group of people, please remember to ‘socially distance’ from them. You will find the start of the trail at the top of the steps leading from the churchyard into the woods and please observe any signage put in place by the Platt Woods committee indicating new areas of planting, though no quiz boards will be erected near those. We are grateful to the Platt Fundraisers who have generously funded the trail.

Scott Wishart The trail is now laid out so do have a go at the questions (multiple choice answers on the sheets that you download) and there is an answer board at the end of the trail. Editor

ONE ORDINARY HOUSE – ONE ORDINARY BEAR Who would have thought that a simple house in Platt could cause so much anticipation and bring such much needed smiles and enjoyment with an ordinary teddy bear? I can remember the first day as a bit of a light-hearted joke, sitting the teddy on a sun lounger out in the front garden with a pair of glasses on and that was going to be it ...

But that evening, having seen the news and seeing the current scare we were facing, we had an idea. Maybe we could spread some light-hearted relief and bring some smiles and happiness to our village, by almost bringing this bear to life. Well, I had my share of sleepless nights with ideas, trying to get them to work and bring them together, from a shower curtain windsurf to a golf umbrella hot air balloon. I lost count of the amount of times I had my sons up and down the loft looking for props or making things in the shed for me to use. The ideas seem to come out of nowhere after a while, but they didn’t come without some failings and huge fits of giggles when things didn’t go according to plan. I was trying hard to disguise from the children the pole that had been strategically placed in Teddy in an awkward place. Who knew you could make the Titanic from a baby bath (which, I add, someone thought at first glance was a coffin!)? It was then adapted into a speed boat.

As the days went on and Teddy started to get a following; we had people changing their daily exercise routes and routines to come and see what teddy was up to. As for the comments online, they were truly wonderful and heartfelt and warming to read. This ordinary bear with some expert Blue Peter skills (ha ha) was becoming famous and spreading joy. It was incredibly enjoyable, not only for making it happen but for the amount of love that was spread. We even managed to get him followers in America and Canada.

The VE Day teddy celebrations drew in a crowd, and as the Big Day finally arrived for the wedding of the year it certainly turned into a fabulous village affair, and just when we thought it was all over out popped twins! We were all very sad when Teddy said goodbye but he had told a great story with some fabulous adventures.

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who sent a message, passed by, and left a thank you present. I for one am so overwhelmed by the kindness and shows of community spirit within our surroundings; what a beautiful place to live in.

FROM YOUR COUNTY COUNCILLOR Regular readers of my column will know that I tend to take a particular area for which KCC has responsibility and write thereon. This month I shall address schools and education. The recent and indeed ongoing restrictions on the movement of most of the population have certainly generated significant correspondence and telephone calls from my electorate. The coronavirus has enabled many residents to have the time to get in touch and the last three months has been a peak period for contact from both residents and prospective residents. The most significant subject matter has been schools and schooling.

One of the most difficult matters with which to deal has been the matter of work set for children who are unable to attend school and as a result are being home educated. It is clear that many parents are concerned at the variation in both the quantity and the standard of work being set for their children. Where the school or teacher is setting significant levels of work and providing sufficient support, I am not being requested to answer questions from parents.

It is clear that there are significant variations, even within families, as to the quantity and the standard of work being sought from pupils. It is obvious to me that there are great differences between schools as to what support is provided and which age ranges are supported. In some families, with children at different schools, the differences are apparently stark. The quality of support offered differs both between schools and within schools. It is these differences, for the most part, that have prompted the greatest number of parents to make contact and ask if I know why these differences are happening and enquire as why they are allowed and whether this is school policy or is there any input from KCC?

The educational support offered by way of online education, work setting and support offered by each school is a matter for the Headteacher, and clearly there are differences between what various school establishments have put in place. At this juncture (I write this column in mid- June) it is difficult to have a holistic view. In Kent as a whole 83% of state primary schools are now open, with pupil attendance restricted to those permitted to attend by the Government. There are clear differences between schools as to the degree of support available and provided.

The secondary sector has also brought questions, with again surprisingly significant differences between the degree of support provided by what, on the face of it, are similar educational establishments. Some schools are setting work online to be completed either fully or partially offline; others run ‘lessons’ online using proprietary educational/meeting software.

Some appear by accounts that I have received, to be offering very little support by comparison.

PLATT WOODS VOLUNTEER GROUP We are working again! Actually we started in a rush on 13th June, hugging only trees and not each other. We expect to meet at 09.30 at Platt Common entrance on Saturday 11th July and split into small groups, finishing by 12.00. Please bring your own refreshments and tools, e.g. loppers, saws, secateurs and gloves.

A few hours of fresh air and good company, as well as providing a service to the community, the Platt Woods Volunteers would be delighted if you would join them on the second Saturday in the month. Meet at the Platt Common entrance to the woods and carry out work to keep them as a wonderful local amenity.

For further information contact David Palmer of the Woods Management Committee on 07554 798982.

I intend to press for an inquiry into the differences both between schools and potentially within schools once conditions permit. I hope that a serious second wave of the pandemic is not forthcoming but, if it is, it would be good to have learned how children’s education could benefit from previous experience and best practice.

For my part, I seek to encourage all those who are responsible for the provision of our children’s education to use their best endeavours to ensure that as many children as possible return to their classrooms at as early a date as they may be safely accommodated.

ST MARY’S PLATT WI Although Platt WI hasn’t met since February, our President, Pat Darby, has emailed all members each month with words of cheer and encouragement, keeping us up to date with WI news and with details of the health of certain members, or those who have upcoming birthdays. In this way we are able to keep in touch with each other, hoping for the day when we can all be together. Thank you so much, Pat, for keeping the connection going, and also to our Secretary, Marion, who keeps in touch with county and national news and relays this to Pat. Thanks also to Pat, Marion, our treasurer, and all the committee who keep in touch regularly and who have agreed to continue in their posts although our Annual Meeting day in May has long passed.

Best wishes to you all.

SCAM AWARENESS The Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) has just run a Scams Awareness Fortnight. The CAB says that this year protecting people against scams is more important than ever. The coronavirus crisis means many people are facing issues – from employment and debt, to housing and health – resulting in more people being in vulnerable situations. Added to this, the overall heightened uncertainty and anxiety caused by the pandemic is making everyone more vulnerable and more likely to fall victim to a scam. Empowering the public against scams is crucial during these uncertain times.

Scams are crimes that can happen to anyone. We can all take a stand to help stop them. There are actions we can all take to report them, share stories and raise awareness of scams to safeguard ourselves and others.

Advice for consumers is on the CAB website www.citizensadvice.org.uk/ Click the ‘Consumer’ tab, scroll quite far down and you should find the headings below which give advice on various issues.

• Check if something might be a scam

• Check if you can get your money back after a scam

• What to do if you've been scammed

• Report a scam

• Get emotional support if you've been scammed

MEMORIAL HALL NEWS With no significant changes from Government that affect the hall there is little to report this month. The only change affecting us is that, with the easing of restrictions on the gardening front as reported last month, we have decided to return to our Saturday morning volunteer sessions starting on the 18th July. As usual this will start at around 9.30am for 2 or 3 hours; please join us if you can as there will be much to catch up on. At the time of writing this it will require all social distancing measures to be followed, and we will also try, as usual, to offer some refreshment, but may have to wait for the bacon and sausage rolls to return.

David Vallance, Chair of Trustees, 883422 STOP PRESS

Since writing the above short report we have had further relaxation measures introduced from government; however, the trustees have decided that our hall should remain closed for the present period as we feel we cannot service the hall safely and as required under the guidelines set out by government at this time. We have therefore set a provisional date for re-opening our hall on the 6th September subject to a second wave not occurring.

PLATT STICHERS At last some relatively good news, with the start of relaxing some of the restrictions we have been under. With this in mind I am hopeful that we shall be able to resume our meetings on the 22nd July.

Weather permitting, I plan to hold the meeting in my garden with the chairs suitably spaced in a large circle, and observing the relevant contact code rulings applicable. Please bring your own mug if you would prefer it, and refreshments will be made in the Summer House, utilising the power supply to boil kettles, etc. Don’t forget to bring any of your items made for our dual projects at Pembury Hospital, as I plan to go there when the ‘Friends’ stall is up and running. I look forward to seeing you all again; keep praying for a warm dry sunny day on 22nd July. The usual time of 10.00 am to 12 noon at ‘Ridings’, Long Mill Lane, applies.

Ann Braithwaite, 887212

All in the month of July 175 years ago, on 4th July 1845 Thomas Barnardo, Irish humanitarian and philanthropist was born. He founded Barnardo’s, a charity which cares for vulnerable children and young people. Also 175 years ago, on 17th July 1845 Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, British Prime Minister (1830-34) died. Earl Grey tea was named after him after he was given a gift of tea flavoured with bergamot oil. 90 years ago, on 7th July 1930 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, British writer who created the detective Sherlock Holmes, died.

FROM YOUR MP

As I write, Tonbridge and Malling is confirmed as the area of Kent with the lowest ‘R’ number, and confirmed Coronavirus cases. Since we have all had to sacrifice so much over recent months and my column has often shared news about the steps we should take, this month I wanted to have a more upbeat tone and recognise all the hard work that has gone towards keeping us safe.

Firstly, we should reflect on the sacrifices each of us has made. Whether it be going without seeing loved ones, being able to hug and celebrate birthdays and family events with those closest to us, or even go to work, our lives have changed fundamentally over the past few months to keep us safe.

Governments can issue guidance, and volunteers and neighbours can provide support. But ultimately only we can look after ourselves and stay alert. That is evidently what we have been doing so far in Tonbridge and Malling.

Thanks also need to go to those who have been running community support schemes. While I know the Parish Council has been active, in many areas these have happened on a street by street basis and show how our villagers come together to help one another.

While the Government has given significant financial support to those workers and businesses affected, the role of Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council in making sure that the most vulnerable were looked after is something we should rightly thank them for. There have been hundreds of people who have only been able to eat because of the efforts which the Council has gone to.

Until Covid-19 is completely eradicated from our communities, we must stay alert. The recovery will take a long time and we must be prepared for it. But we should also reflect on the progress which has been made so far and appreciate the steps we have all taken. I hope the ‘R’ number falls to 0 as quickly as possible, and if we continue doing what we have been there is a good a chance of it happening here as there is anywhere.

THE BLUE ANCHOR UPDATE Hi Everybody,

Once again I must thank our wonderful villagers for their support for our takeaway service. We have been asked to continue this service when all is back to order, and we will be happy to do so. On our decking area at the rear of the pub we have built a covered area over two tables. The idea was to protect customers from the sun. Well, it has turned in to a sun tanning table. The heat is incredible! So if anyone is thinking about a holiday in the sun, and wants a quick tan service before they go, then sit under our new roof area and get a free pre-holiday tan!!!

As to the future, it will not be easy; the restrictions might sound minor, but they require a lot of work to comply. If you are using the inside of the pub and are seated at a table we have to take your order at the table and you are required to supply us with your name, address and contact number. This is to enable us, in the event of someone who was in the pub catching the virus, to contact all people who were in the pub over a two-week period to be traced and checked. It will be a lot of extra work and paperwork to carry out. We also have to monitor the toilets and check their cleanliness and carry out cleaning operations after use. We will be installing sanitising areas in toilets and pub entry areas all round. We cannot allow customers to sit or order at the bar and they must wait for our staff to take the order.

Service in the garden will be a little easier but, there also, we will be taking orders at the tables, and details as to names, etc.

It’s going to be a hard start, but I am sure that with cooperation and a joint effort to make it work we will rise above the problems and enjoy the journey back to normality. When using the garden we ask our customers either to await table service or to order at the restaurant door which will be adapted to a service area for the garden.

So we look forward to seeing you all, and pray that you are all well and have not experienced too many problems.

See you soon,

John and all our staff at the Blue

P.S. Forgot to tell you that the brewery is low on many drinks. Certain draught products, soft drinks, wines and spirits are low but we will have enough to get through the first week!!!

SINGING AND SUMMER READING Last month I introduced you to Friendly Music for Wellbeing organised by the Friends of Canterbury Cathedral, set up as a singing group for older people, including those with dementia. They have now produced a fourth video which can be found at https://youtu.be/iC1B3qBGGuw. If you enjoy singing or are a member of a choir, maybe our own WiTunes or church choir, you are probably missing the opportunity to keep your voice in trim. These videos are introduced by Adrian Bawtree, second organist at Canterbury Cathedral. Each video is introduced with some good voice exercises – ‘Sit up/stand up straight, breathe in for 4, breathe out for 4, then 6, then 8, then 10.’ All good to keep your voice and breathing in good shape. The songs on the new video are, ‘When the saints go marching in’. ‘Swing low sweet chariot’, ‘When you’re smiling’, ‘Catch a falling star’ and ‘Holy, holy, holy’. Here are some of the earlier videos which Adrian introduces. https://youtu.be/sU5_J5hLpTw https://youtu.be/jNRsXE_0lHA.

For those with more time to read at the moment, several books have been written about personal experiences of dementia. There are two, written by people living with dementia, which are definitely a worthwhile and enlightening read. Dr Jennifer Bute was a highly respected senior GP in a large clinical practice, some of whose patients had dementia. Her father had had it and when she was in her late 50s she began to notice that she also had some problems. Aged 63, she retired with early onset dementia and now lives in a dementia inclusive retirement village with support. She continues to live a very active life, helping those around her. Dr Bute relies on technology herself and has set up a website http://gloriousopportunity.org/ in order to support others, with very helpful videos and leaflets. She still addresses conferences and feels that, at the moment, dementia is at much the same stage as the care of strokes was 15 years ago; there is much more to be done. Her book ‘Dementia from the Inside’, published in 2018, is inspiring reading. Subtitled ‘A Doctor’s Personal Journey of Hope’, it is exactly that, giving enlightened and practical help to people who are living with dementia – and hope to those who are with them on the journey.

Wendy Mitchell worked for 20 years with the NHS and the word ‘dementia’ had never entered her vocabulary. She was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease aged 58. Soon after her diagnosis she began writing a blog, Which me am I today? She continues to write about her life nowadays. Her two daughters, one of whom is a nurse, support her and helped her to write a book, a 2018 Sunday Times Bestseller, ‘Somebody I used to know’.

Both these ladies are heard in radio interviews from time to time as (Continued on page 33)

ST MARY’S PLATT AND DISTRICT SOCIETY Although some lockdown conditions are gradually easing social distancing is still expected; therefore it would be very difficult to hold our very sociable Tea Party on 10th July. Sadly, it has been cancelled for this year.

We hope that we will be able to see you all sometime and, if restrictions allow, at the AGM in October.

We will make up for the cancellation of this party – probably at our November meeting.

We have placed, in the village noticeboard opposite the church, some maps of Platt that the society holds. Although we have had them for some time most of the footpaths remain the same and may be a helpful addition to your walks. However, the bus garage is now the Morgan garage and there are houses at Basted Mill but, having said that, the maps are still helpful and interesting, so please take one. Any more can be obtained by contacting me.

Stay safe (and alert!).

VODAFONE'S GREAT BRITISH TECH APPEAL Vodaphone is asking for donations of tablets and smartphones no longer wanted. They refurbish these and redistribute them to help people who don't have a device. The instructions given for preparing and sending stuff are very clear. The website says:

We rely on technology, now more than ever – it’s keeping us connected, entertained and informed during lockdown. But thousands of young people are stuck at home without a phone or tablet. They can’t access remote learning or contact care workers and family members that they rely on for support. We can change that, together.

Donate your old phones and tablets to The Great British Tech Appeal and we’ll gift them to families and support workers in need, with 3 months free data.

Donating your device is simple, fast and free of charge. Complete our online form and we will send a donation kit with a flattened freepost box and pre-paid returns envelope. Before returning your device, we recommend you do a full reset of the device to its default factory settings (e.g. no password or pin number or any cloud-based protection such as iCloud). Please also disable any ‘find my device’ functionality such as Find My iPhone. If ‘Find my device’ is not disabled, we will not be able to process or donate your device. You can find more information on how to wipe data from your device from Apple or Android. Once your device is data wiped and packaged in the donation box it can be posted free at any post office or post box.

The above is also printed on the instructions you receive with the donation kit with information about batteries, SIM cards and chargers also.

Vodafone partners are Barnardo's, SafeLives and British Red Cross. They get the refurbished phones and have the contacts to know where to donate them.

well as their websites. They have much to say about the attitude to dementia, of which there are many forms. Their mindset is that the diagnosis should be thought of as the start of a different life, which, with support, their lives are witness to.
