MEDIA INFORMATION Wilmington Blue Rocks (36-37; 3-2) Carolina League Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals vs. Frederick Keys (33-39; 1-4) Carolina League Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles Game No. 74 • Road Game No. 40 • Harry Grove Stadium • Tuesday, June 24, 2014 • 7:00 p.m. BLUE ROCKS BREAKDOWN HOME: 19-15 | AWAY: 17-22 | STREAK: W3 | LAST 5: 3-2 | LAST 10: 6-4 FLEXING SOME OFFENSIVE MUSCLE: Christian Binford threw 6.2 solid innings while Bubba Starling racked up two more hits including a homer as the Wilmington Blue Rocks broke out the big lumber in a 9-3 rout of the Frederick Keys on Monday night. After Starling’s first-inning homer, the Rocks never looked back as the flexed their offensive might throughout the night. The victory was Wilmington’s third straight and improved the team to 3-2 in the second half and 36-37 overall. STAR OF THE SHOW: Bubba Starling continued his scorching-hot start to the second half with two more hits Monday night against the Keys. He finished the evening 2-for-4 with a pair of runs, a home run and a walk. It was the third time in his career that Starling had homered on back-to-back nights. He has accomplished the feat once in each of his three seasons as a pro. The talented center first homered in two consecutive games on August 2 and August 4, 2012, while he played for Rookie-Level Burlington. He did it again on April 28 and April 29 of last season for Low-A Lexington. Starling’s dinger on Tuesday night came in the 10th inning and helped the Blue Crew to a 2-1 extra-inning win. In five games since the All-Star Break, Starling is batting .478 (11-for-23) with two home runs, a triple, two doubles, seven runs and five RBIs. All five of those contests have been multi-hit efforts. Overall this season, Starling is batting .210 with 15 doubles, three triples, five homers, 41 runs and 35 RBIs in 70 games. His five dingers are the most by a Blue Rock this season. BINFORD’S BRILLIANCE: Christian Binford turned in another quality start Monday in front of friends and family in Frederick. The Hagerstown, Maryland, resident pitched 6.2 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out six. Binford leads the Carolina League with 85 punchouts this season and he threw 68 of his 88 pitches Monday for strikes. Monday’s outing was also Binford’s seventh quality start of the season and his eighth without yielding a walk. The 6-foot-6 righty has issued only 11 free passes this season across 76.2 innings pitched and 13 starts. In his three-year professional career, Binford has allowed just 40 free passes across 251.2 innings and 43 starts. ROCKS ROLLING: With Monday night’s victory in Frederick, the Blue Crew equaled its second-longest winning streak of the season. It was the fourth time in 2014 that Wilmington has won at least three in a row. The Blue Rocks will look to match their longest winning streak of the year on Tuesday, a four-gamer between May 18 and May 21. That stretch included a 5-4 win over Lynchburg in the series finale of a four-game series in Virginia and the first three contests of a four-game set against Carolina at Frawley Stadium. The Rocks won the first game of the Carolina series, 8-4, and then swept a doubleheader to wrap up the streak. Wilmington won the first game in the twin-bill, 9-4, and then walked off, 3-2, in extras on an RBI single by Kenny Diekroeger in the nightcap. THEY SAID IT, MANAGER DARRYL KENNEDY: “I thought for most of the night [Christian Binford] located really well down in the zone. It was probably one of his better outings of being down in the zone with the first-pitch strikes. I think he was a little more relaxed out there and not as geared up with the local crowd tonight. He pitched a very good ballgame. He kind of lost his composure there after that play at the plate and I had to get him out of there. Overall, I thought he threw a very good ballgame...Bubba [Starling] is swinging the bat well. The good thing is Zane [Evans] is getting back in there and starting to swing the bat well also. I say it every night, we need those two guys to contribute in our offense and the last few nights they have... It’s not just Zane [showing patience]. I see a different lineup completely going up there and not being so aggressive. They’re aggressive when they need to but they’re starting to zone in a little better and look for the pitches they want to hit. I think a lot of that is coming from settling into the league and [trying to do too much] in the first half. Now that we’ve started the second half, it seems like they’ve kind of matured their way into the league and they’re starting to believe that they belong here... The oldest saying in baseball is ‘hitting is contagious.’ That’s exactly what’s going on right now. Everybody is starting to swing the bat and it’s trickling down to each and every guy. I think the home runs are very indicative of our approach by being able to wait out and lay off those pitches outside of the zone and lay off those pitches off the plate and getting those pitches that we can drive out of the ballpark. That’s what it’s all about; laying off the tough pitches, laying off the pitchers’ pitches and looking for the one you can handle. When you do that consistently, your power numbers are going to go up, your on-base percentage is going to go up, you’re going to take the walk and the next guy is going to be able to drive him in. That’s what’s happened.” THEY SAID IT, PITCHER CHRISTIAN BINFORD: “I was able to slow everything down and just keep the ball down. I think the last game [in Frederick] I got too quick and tried to overpower guys. That’s just not my game. I was able to keep the ball down and get real quick outs early in the game... Compared to last game [in Frederick], that’s exactly what it was, just keeping the ball down. The last game, I had the ball up, they put good swings on it and they were able to drive it. Today, the ball was down and when they drove it, it went straight up most of the time. Then, later in the game, things started to flatten out a little bit...The defense made amazing plays all night. It was just a good game... It’s absolutely awesome [to see the team score so much]. This has been so much fun. I think a lot of guys, they’ve been waiting for it. They knew it was coming eventually. It was just a matter of time. Now, we’re seeing what these guys can actually do. When you pair it with the defense for all of us pitchers, you have the confidence going into a start before you even throw the first pitch. It’s fun watching these guys hit. It’s a lot more fun in the clubhouse and in the dugout and guys are in better moods. I think now that we’re on a little streak, you don’t mess with a streak. Nobody wants to end it as a pitcher. I don’t think the hitters are stopping any time soon.” Today’s Starters WIL: RHP Miguel Almonte (4-3, 4.48) vs. FRE: RHP Joe Van Meter (3-1, 4.54) Miguel Almonte will take the mound Tuesday for the 13th time as a member of the Wilmington Blue Rocks. He is the latest hard-throwing Kansas City Royals prospect to hone his craft in Wilmington, following in the footsteps of Yordano Ventura and Kyle Zimmer. Almonte, the No. 5 prospect in the Kansas City Royals organization according to Baseball America, has had an up-and-down year. He has shined, at times, including during a 6.1-inning shutout performance on May 28 at Carolina. He was also excellent in his first start of the campaign on April 8 against Winston-Salem. Almonte tossed 5.2 scoreless frames while yielding just one hit and striking out three that night. He was also brilliant in his third start of the year, on April 16 at Lynchburg. That evening, the right-hander pitched six shutout innings and allowed just one hit while striking out eight. Last time out, Almonte completed only four innings and allowed four runs (one earned) on six hits. Opposing batters are hitting a combined .253 against Almonte . Lefties are batting .289 against the flame-throwing righty, while righties are hitting only .234 against him. Almonte has lasted at least five innings in 10 of his 12 starts thus far. He has faced the Keys once, on May 23, and gave up two runs on eight hits over five innings while taking a no-decision. A graduate of VCU, right-hander Joe Van Meter is in his fifth year as a pro. Van Meter was drafted in the 21st round of the 2010 Draft by the Texas Rangers after a collegiate season in which he was named All-Colonial Athletic Conference, CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Performer and ABCA/Rawlings All-East Region as a third-baseman. 2014 is Van Meter’s third season in the Carolina League. However, the first two were spent with Myrtle Beach while still with the Rangers. In 2012, Van Meter went 4-5 with a 2.06 ERA in 25 games (eight starts) for the Pelicans. He followed that up in 2013 by going 3-4 with a 3.62 ERA in 24 games (six starts). Thus far, in 2014, Van Meter has a 3-1 record and a 4.54 ERA in eight starts. He has struck out 29 and walked 17 in 41.2 innings pitched. Lefties are batting .280 against Van Meter, while righties are hitting .232. Van Meter has gone at least five innings in seven of his eight starts for Frederick. In his most recent outing, on June 19 at Carolina, he allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings. Van Meter punched out five and walked one that night. KEY NOTES:

Baseball Lifer: Frederick Keys manager Luis Pujols has a long and storied history in the game of baseball. Pujols, the cousin of Angels superstar Albert Pujols, had a nine-year Major League career as a backup catcher between 1977 and 1985. He spent time with the Houston Astros, Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers. Pujols was a career .193 hitter, yet made it through nine seasons because of his superb defense behind the plate. He hit six career homers to go along with 81 career RBIs. Pujols turned to coaching in 1993, when he joined the staff of Montreal Expos manager Felipe Alou. From 1993 through 1999, he served as the first-base coach there. In 2000, Pujols was promoted to bench coach. At the Major League level, Pujols has also coached with the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants. He served as the Tigers’ interim manager for the 2002 season after Phil Garner was fired six games in. Pujols is in his second season with the Baltimore Orioles organization. He managed the Delmarva Shorebirds to a 54-82 record in 2013 prior to a promotion to Frederick for this season.

Starring One Level At A Time: The 25-year-old Sammie Starr is back with the Frederick Keys for a fourth go-round in 2014. The Baltimore Orioles select-ed Starr in the 34th round of the 2010 Draft out of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Star, who grew up in Toronto, has repeated nearly every level in which he has played. Starr spent parts of 2010 and 2011 with the Short Season-A Aberdeen Ironbirds. He spent parts of 2011 and 2012 with the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds. Starr has made appearances with the Frederick Keys in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. He played in one game at the Triple-A level in 2012 for the Norfolk Tides. Starr told the blog Nine Inning Know-It-All in 2013, “I’ve really had to prove myself as a late draft pick senior sign, and it’s taken a few years for me to establish myself in the organization as someone they can trust. It’s not always easy as you could imagine the “bonus babies” get a lot more opportunities and those are the guys I’m competing against but it’s a challenge like anything else, and all I can do is play my game.” Starr still has never played in more than 115 games in a professional season. He did that in 2013 with the Frederick Keys, when he batted .237 with six homers.

One Step At A Time: Shortstop Adrian Marin was taken 99th overall in the third round of the 2012 Draft by the Baltimore Orioles out of Gulliver Prep in Miami, Florida. The 20-year-old received a signing bonus of $481,100 and spurned a commitment to the University of Miami when he signed with the Orioles. At the National High School Invitational in 2012, Marin homered off of current Myrtle Beach Pelican Joey Gallo. Through his first two-plus Minor League seasons, Marin has shown some rawness at the plate. He hit .287 in 2012 across 47 contests with the Gulf Coast League Orioles. He finished the season appearing in six contests for Low-A Delmarva. In 2013, Marin spent the entire season with Delmarva. The right-handed hitter batted .265 with four homers, 19 doubles and two triples in 108 games. According to Baseball America, Marin was the No. 12 prospect in the Orioles system entering 2014.

Putting Himself On The Map: Outfielder Glynn Davis has gone from being an undrafted free agent to a top-30 prospect relatively quickly. Davis, the No. 29 prospect in the Orioles organization according to Baseball America, grew up in Baltimore and played collegiately at the Community College of Baltimore County, Catonsville. He then signed with his hometown Baltimore Orioles on August 20, 2010. Davis hit .430 with 10 homers and 35 stolen bases in his first year in college but nobody scouted him. According to an article from the Mid Atlantic Sports Network in 2010, “Then he had a big summer playing for the Youse’s Orioles team that won the AAABA national championship in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. There he was seen by scouts and before another team could swoop in and sign him, the Orioles did.” The Orioles originally intended to draft Davis. “We saw a couple of tools we liked and we were going to take him down in the draft,” Joe Jordan, the Orioles scouting director at the time, told MASN. “[Area scout] Chris [Gale] and [East Coast crosschecker] Dean Albany assured me they didn’t feel there was any other club on him.” For that reason, the Orioles did not end up drafting Davis. They watched him play well that summer and signed him as a non-drafted free agent instead. In four Minor League seasons, Davis has hit .259 with five homers and 102 RBIs. He has stolen 93 bags in 122 tries. Davis has played well enough in 2014 that he made the Carolina League All-Star Team.

Cold weather or hot weather, I still have to go out and do my job. I just stayed with my own routine. Either way, you have to go out there and pitch, so I acted like it was hot…I feel like it’s a challenge [to be so young]. I [try to]go out there like if I were a veteran, too. I kind of adapt myself to the age and the challenge…I go out there every time, whether they’re young or their old. My job is to go out there and pitch…When you’re out there and not doing your job then you kind of put some pressure on yourself but other than that I have to bust my butt and go out there every time…I come here with an open mind every day. Every day I try to learn something new. [Steve Luebber] has helped me learn quite a few things this year...One of the things [Luebber] has taught me is to work off the fastball and to be more aggressive using the fastball because [he says] I have a really good one…People describe me as a power arm, but I go out there and whatever I need to do I’ll do. If I need to use my power arm [I do] and, if not, whatever they need is what I’ll do…It’s rough not having my mom or my dad [in the United States]. But I have to go out there and I use it as motivation to help my family and move my family forward and to give them a lifestyle…[I talk to my family] every day. If I don’t talk to my family before the day starts I don’t feel right. I call them and try to make my day [better]…I’ve been playing baseball since I was young. I don’t remember, exactly, what age [I started]. Around the age of 14 is when I started pitching off the mound and realized I was going to be a pitcher…Pedro Martinez, when he was coming up, was a big figure that everybody knew in the Dominican. I grew up idolizing him…He was an inspired pitcher. He was small but he had a big heart and certainly proved everybody wrong and look what he [became].
