Aussie Hopefuls

Last Saturday the National Gridiron Team sent out invitations to the AIS Australian Outback’s training camp. The camp is the first step towards 2015 World Championships. The Melbourne Roy-als have had two players scouted and tested and now invited as part of the best 90 players from around Australia to go to the ACT with the potential to be selected to represent Australia next May. The Royals would like to congratulate Wide Receivers; Adam Watson #81 and Chris Tuohy #80. Both Adam and Chris have had very successful seasons this year and both are versatile players. Royals Newsletter had a word with Adam and Chris to give you some idea about them. Adam, can you give us a brief sporting background?

Played Aussie rules all my life at a number of different levels. I also participated in track and field through my teenage years as a decathlete, so did a lot of training for many different events.

Chris, same question.

Played Junior Gridiron for Hawthorn HurricanesPlayed Senior Gridiron for the Waverly Sharks at age 16 (it was hard)Played 1st XV rugby in high school and club level selected for state U19 side.Played A grade touch rugby.8 years of Professional Sprinting3 years club Aussie Rules Adam, what awards or achievements did you have in any or all of these sports?

Adam, what made you take up Gridiron?

4 ROYALS NEWSLETTER : EDITION 14

Chris, what made you take up Gridiron?

Played as a kid so I loved the sport, went onto other things then was hooked by the TV commercials GV (Gridiron Victoria) did recently, so as I wasn’t doing anything else, I thought what the hell. Now I have a chance to try out for Australia. If I can do that anyone can, it’s not about how good you are, it’s how much you believe in yourself. Adam, what positions have you played this season?

Mainly as a Slot Receiver/Wide Receiver, a bit of punting and special teams. I’ve had a few reps at quarterback and also some running back plays, but not many.

Chris, same question

Kicker both KO and PAT, Wide Receiver, Kick Return, Punt Return and 1 shot at Running Back, but coach won’t let me play there. Adam, obviously you have a natural ability for the sport, what do you enjoy most about it?

I love that the sport is all about power and speed, the training is fun and I like making big catches.

Chris, same question.

Sport or Gridiron?……either.

Well sport is life really, what is not to like about it, mateship, challenge, torment, jubilation etc. A coach once told me and it applies to any sport really, in my case it was Athletics - doesn’t build character it reveals it. I always remember that more so when I am down or my team is, I always try to show no pain, no fear and pick myself or teammates up. Adam, who is your favourite player, for the Royals and NFL?

Royals - Blair. Obvious one because he throws me the ball, and he’s damn good at it!NFL - Drew Brees, he just keeps getting yards and throwing touchdowns, fun to watch. Also helped my fantasy team last year!

Chris, who is your favourite player, for the Royals and NFL?

I have to say Blair Black in fear of not getting tossed the pill again this season, but we have a number of great players to watch both on and off the field. #44 Edwards has a must win attitude and plays hard all day, #69 Donel it pains me to boost him, as he is the only player with a bigger head than me and for a defensive end, that’s an achievement, on the O both Darcy #88 and Watson #81 are really great to watch. I get to see them close up, they both take tough grabs and hard hits, and they are not easy to bring down. In the NFL, I must admit I don’t watch a ton of that at the moment, but Emmitt Smith and Jerry Rice are my two all time favourite players.

Around the league

The saturday morning game this weekend kicked off with the Bay City Buccaneers playing the Western Crusaders. The Buccs continued on their good form, leading at halftime 20-0. The Crusaders were unable to stop the Buccs in the second half as well, as they put on another 20 points to win the game 40-0. The Buccaneers seal the number one position in division-one, gaining an automatic Vic Bowl berth. The Crusaders will finish third for the year, earning a place in the playoffs.

In division-two, the Northern Raiders hosted the Gippsland Gladiators in the afternoon game at LE Cotchin, Reservoir. The Raiders had got the win against the Gladiators in their last match, and despite the Gladiators putting up a good fight, the Raiders won again. The Gladiators were faced with depleted numbers, but still made the trip down and fought the game out. Raiders win 24-2 with a Gladiators safety. The Raiders sealed their playoff spot, currently third and barringno cross-divisional upsets will finish there.

On Sunday, the Monash Barbarians hosted the Croydon Stars. The Stars have had low numbers all season and have been winless but nearly took the upset against the second placed Barbarians. The scores were tied at 0-0 as both teams denied touchdowns until the last three minutes of the fourth quarter. The Barbarians were able to put a score in with the two-point conversion and won the game 8-0. The Barbarians look set to finish second in the regular season behind the Royals, most likely to host the Raiders at home in the semi-finals.

The Monash Warriors hosted the Croydon Rangers on Sunday afternoon in a game that most thought would be taken home by the Warriors with ease. The Rangers stepped up however in a nail biting game and won the game 30-26. The Warriors had the ball in the dying minutes of the game, making it to the red zone as time ran out. The Warriors will finish second in the regular season with a win next week, with the Warriors and the Barbs most likely to host a double header in Clayton in the semi-finals.
