    MCU shot

    in Solihull

    Sixth Form

1.In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and

    conventions of real media products?

    Formal Proposal

The point of our documentary is to present factual information about our certain topic in society.

This leads to sparking an interest in the subject or for people to raise questions and convey their

opinion. The aim of our documentary is to highlight the pressures from the media to do with body

issues (weight) and image. The style we have chosen for our documentary is social. We have chosen

to make a social documentary because it identifies the problems and pressures that teenagers are

under to have a certain image, maintain their appearance and look a certain

    way at all times.

We also decided to include a boys point of view on the matter as our

documentary would then have a brooder audience. We also decided to feature footage from Solihull

Sixth form as this would also relate well with our target audience.

Not only is a documentary used to present factual information they also are

used to entertain the audience. We used a range of different shots such as

Close Up, Medium Close Up, and Establishing Shots etc. We also used

a range oftransitions to keep the viewer interested.

    Why Channel 4?

We chose Channel 4 for our broadcaster as it suits the

age of our target audience rather than BBC, as channel 4

are renowned for being less formal and intrusive. They

also broadcast programs which have a similar topic to

ours such as Embarrassing Bodies, Supersize vs.

Superskinny and Gok Wans fashion fix.

    Male

    point

    of view

Our documentary would be aired at about 8 or 9pm. As we

would air the documentary during prime time television, it

would attract a large audience, for example teenagers,

adults and also adults who deal with teenagers everyday

    such as a teacher.

Use of Camera:Various shot types and different angles. Necessary to keep theviewer entertained.

Panning Up and Down:For example when we are showing the

establishing shot of the hairdressers before we show the interview of the twohairdressers.

Zooms: We use this convention during the shot of Amy applying her make up andwe zoom in onto her face to create a variation in the one shot. We also use this

when we see a quick shot of the dietician and the counsellor o n their computers and

we zoom in and out before we show the interviews of the two experts.

    Medium Close Up MCU and

    Close Ups CU-Are conventional

during an interview as it allows theaudience to feel connected to the

person speaking as they can clearly

    see there facial featu res.

Transitions We used transitions that we felt made

our documentary flow well. Adding effects like this

make our documentary look more realistic and pieces

our scenes together effectively. Here is a link to some

moving images of a transition that is in our

    documentary.

Title Sequence-Both of the title sequences are

similar in that they both convey the topic of body

image. But in fact I prefer the title from the BBC3

documentary. As it portrays that in fact in the pursuit

of wanting to be extremely skinny is very unhealthy,

therefore they put the presenter and case studies

head on top of a skeleton. Whereas ours is just a

close up of lips, however the colours and close up

    image does catch the eye.

    Establishing Shots E.g. Solihull Sixth

Form, the Gym, Solihull Hospital, the

Hairdressers and Amys House. This allowed

our documentary to set the scene fo r the

audience. SuperSlim Me has similar shots like

the one shown [Barrys Bootcamp.] The

establishing shots are vital for our target

audience to follow our documentary especially

    the case study part.

Channel 4 Ident We included this as it

is a key convention of Channel 4 to

include the channel 4 ident before the

documentary as it also allows the

    voiceover to introduce the programme

(our documentary) before it begins. This

informs the audience of the topic of our

    documentary.

  • 8/7/2019 Media question 1 (Repaired)

    5/29

Montage of Images-In comparison with the documentary concerning the size zerodebate on shown on BBC3 the montage of images are quite similar to ours. As they both

include images that relate to the topic of the documentary. Such as people who are shown in

the documentary, and also the Medias in fluence, therefore both our documentary and the

BBC3 documentary both show magazines. If I could change one thing I would like to have

included actual footage in the montage of images instead of just still images.

  • 8/7/2019 Media question 1 (Repaired)

    6/29

    Presenting-Within our documentary at the

beginning of our first 5 minutes we decided to

include ourselves presenting to introduce the viewer

to the program. However Super Slim Me doesnt

exactly include her formally presenting as she is the

case study and the voiceover. But she does guide

the viewer the same as a presenter would. That

format would not have worked with our

documentary as our case study was not trying to

    achieve something as Dawn was.

Interviews-The main convention used in documentaries

is interviews. This shows peoples opinion on the matter.

We used George and Lauren as our direct interviews

discussing their views about the pressures from the media.

But we used mainly experts for our documentary as it

increase the credibility of our documentary and makes it

look less amateurish due to the interviews being an adult

figure who is an expert in the field they are beingspecifically asked about. SuperSlim Me also shows expert

interviews such as a Specialist in Sports and Exercise

    Medicine.

  • 8/7/2019 Media question 1 (Repaired)

    7/29

Mis en Scene-Our mis en scene was carefully

chosen as we wanted an appropriate back drop

that linked with the topic of what that person was

talking about. Such as when Amy was been asked

about her daily routine she was sat at her make up

table doing her make up. When we interviewed

George he was sat in the gym as he was talking

about working out. SuperSlim Me is similar as

when she is speaking about her weight she has a

back drop of clothes in very small sizes.

Journey-During our documentary we follow our

case study, Amy, we begin to have a journey with

Amy as we watch her wake up, choose her clothes

for that day and see her applying her make up. In

SuperSlim Me they have a similar technique however

Dawn in the program has a goal to become a size

zero so we watch her trying to reach that size in

    American clothing.

Opening Shot- We decided we would do something a little

conventional with documentaries and open the 5 minute

documentary with a high angle shot of an ipod selecting the

song, Keshas blah blah blah, that is about to play on our

documentary. I thought the shot worked well with our

documentary also it relates well with our target audience as

they are young and the majority would have some sort of

    device that plays music.

  • 8/7/2019 Media question 1 (Repaired)

    8/29

Use ofText-We used a caption for when we had a

new interview appear in our documentary of the

interviewees name, this is a typical convention used

in documentaries as it informs the audience of their

name and perhaps their profession in so me cases.

This allows the audience to feel they can relate and

it is more personal. SuperSlim Me also uses this

convention to inform the viewer of the professions

name and their profession. However im not happy

with most of our captions as they are very un clear.

Voiceover-Our voiceover is fairly regular and we

decided to have a male voiceover as our

documentary could be seen as targeted towards

mainly women therefore a male voiceover could

help male viewers feel they can relate more rather

than a female voiceover which is quite predictable.

We used many stats, facts and figures in our

voiceover to make our documentary factual and

    perhaps groundbreaking. Our voiceover also

anchors to the images for the audience to

understand whats coming up next. SuperSlim Me is

similar in the fact that they have a voiceover which is

also the same voice as the case study which links

the images together in order for the audience to

    understand what is happening.

Vox Pops-We used one vox pop to provide

a view from a normal female student about

the pressures from the media. Initially we

planned on including more vox pops however

looking back on the shots the sound quality

was very poor. SuperSlim Me also includes

vox pops of women whilst they are shopping

asking their view on the size zero debate. Vox

pops are a useful convention to show

    unanimous opinions.

  • 8/7/2019 Media question 1 (Repaired)

    9/29

Case Study-We decided to use a Case

Study in our documentary to show a journey

and how the media can actually affect young

people. SuperSlim Me also involves a case

study as the topic of the documentary of what

it takes to become a size zero.

Diegetic SoundWe used the sound of

Amys alarm ringing to make our documentary

as realistic and natural so our audience can

relate. The alarm ringing signals for Amy to

begin her normal day which we are following.

SuperSlim also uses diegetic sound such as

when Dawn is exercising you can hear other

people on the machines and back ground

noises when their outside such as other

peoples conversations and cars going by.

Music- We used current music which we feel our target

audience can relate too. We also made sure the music was

relevant. We decided when Lauren [the recovering anorexic

sufferer] was speaking and the dietician we would play Britney

Spears Every time as it was suitable for the mood that our

documentary turned too. We also decided to use Keshas Blah,

blah, blah which plays whilst the montage of images are being

shown. The song is fast paced which is relevant to when the

images are been shown. We decided not to use any of the

copyright songs that were available to us as we could not find a

appropriate one. However we did get permission for the two

songs that we did have on our documentary which is shown on

    our blog.

    10/29

    The subheading

    briefly explaining

    the topic of our

    documentary

    therefore our

    Target Audience

    could just pay

    attention to our

    subheadings and

    feel all they know

    all they need to

    knowabout ourdocumentary.

    Ancillary Tasks

Our brief was to produce two ancillary tasks a TV Listings Page and a 30 second

Radio Trailerboth of which to advertise our main task, our Documentary. We had to

follow the usual codes and conventions of TV Listings Page and Radio Trailers. We

studied two of each and then produced our own using the usual codes andconventions, we also had to have our brand identity in mind so all three tasks would

link together with the same target Audience in mind.

Our Listings Page: Using Conventions Main Heading in bold and original textwriting to attract our Target Audience.

Follows a Listings Page convention as it

is short and snappy and much larger

than the rest of the text, also it is on the

first page and the top which helps catch

    the e e of readers.

    Drop Cap

    shows clearly

    where new

    paragraphs are

    beginning this

    allows the

    reading to be

    casual for our

    Target

    Audience.

    The three columns follow theconvention of the rule of thirds;

this gives our listings page a

    professional look. Black font is

    also conventional.

    We followed the

    convention of

    having page

    numbers at the

    bottom of each

    page on our

Listings Page as itis easier to find the

    page.

    We followed

    another

    convention of

    having the

    Channel that our

    documentary is

    being shown on

    what time its on

    also the actual

    title of our

    documentary as

    it informs the

    reader when,

    what time and

    whatit is called

    to remember to

    watch it or tell a

    friend.

We also used a small image that we

used from our documentary to link

    our Listings Page with our

documentary, it also gives our targetAudience an insight to what our

    documentary looks like.

    Our Radio Trailer- Using Conventions

    Our Script

    Presenter 1 (male)

In Britain are we becoming obsessed with the idea of perfect? This Tuesday at 8oclock on channel 4, a new documentary series, investigating the ideas of perfection will show us more.

    A briefcaption by

    the image

    summarising the

    topic of our

    documentary as

    our Target

    Audience would

    probably flick

    rather than read

    the whole article.

    We followed this

    code and

    convention as it

    was used in the

    magazine we

    studied.

    I think the image

    overlapping the

    previous page

    worked very

    effective for thisarticle however I

    believe it would

    not have worked

    as well with our

    image we chose.

If I could change a few things about our Listings Page

would be to add just some colour therefore it would

appeal more to our Target Audience I feel, also as our

Target Audience are made up of males and females I

feel we should have included a picture of George, themale in our documentary , therefore we are includ ing

both sexes and it would also appeal to a male as our

topic for our documentary is very female based and we

should had made sure we were targeting both sexes in

our Listing Page. However realistically our Target

Audience would probably not read a TV Lis tings

magazine therefore we decided our Radio Trailer

would be broadcasted on Ca ital Fm.

    The magazine we

    looked at uses a

    MCU image for the

whole of one page.We liked the idea of

    this so we decided

to use a long shot of

    Amy who is our

    case study in our

    documentary as the

    image that will cover

    the whole of one

    page as we thought

    such a large image

    looks very striking.

We chose the imagewe used from the

    montage of shots

    we had in our

    documentary, this

    would then link our

    documentary and

    our TV Listings

    Page together and it

    will also show the

    reader of the

    magazine what type

    of people will be

    featured in our

    documentary. Again

    reinforcing who our

    Target Audience is.

  • 8/7/2019 Media question 1 (Repaired)

    12/29

    Main character Amy

I go through 4 bottles of hairspray every week

    Presenter 2 (female)

Are we as women taking it too far, in our quest of the perfect, hair,

body, face, for the perfect image?

    Lauren recovered anorexic

Around 90% of cases of anorexia are in girls, so even though it affects afew males, its mainly young girls, and we were always told that 5-20%,of the people who had anorexia would die.

    Dietician

A variety of sizes can be portrayed as healthy really.

    Presenter 2 (female)

So dont forget to tune in to channel 4, this Tuesday at 8pm to watchBritains quest for perfection

We chose Capital Fm to broadcast our radio trailer due to the

radio stations audience being very similar to our Target

Audience. As Capital Fm has a broad array of songs they play

which a lot of young people feel they can relate to their. As our

target Audience is young male s and females we thought this

radio station was the most appropriate, as the station cansometimes advertise other topic such as alcohol, sex and

drugs therefore our topic would fit in due to many young

people being perceived as feeling they have body issu es and

are very pressured to be easily led by the media.

    http://www.capitalfm.com/

Presenters-For our Radio Trailer we used both presenters

voices that were also in our documentary, this again would link our brand identity together .

We used both male and female to attract our Target Audience as its both young females

and males. As our topic is seen as quite a female topic we

needed to cater for males as well. The female and male

voiceover uses the pronoun we and the proper noun Britain

to include a brooder audience that may also be listening and

be interested in watching our documentary such as our

    secondary audience (parents.)

    Time and Date- The presenters

mention the date and time of when our

documentary will be aired twice once at

  • 8/7/2019 Media question 1 (Repaired)

    13/29

the beginning and at the end this is normally used in Radio Trailers such as the two trailers

we analysed, Last Chance to See. We repeated the time and da te to follow usual

conventions of radio trailers so our trailer can appear as professional as we could get it.

Extracts-We used three extracts from the documentary itself one by Lauren who says sherecovered from anorexia; we used a quote of when she is saying a statistic regarding

anorexia as it could shock our target Audience and make them want to watch ourdocumentary, 5-20%, of the people who had anorexia would die. Another quote we use idfrom our case study AmyIgo through 4 bottles of hairspray every weekthis gives a briefinsight of what our documentary content contains and can also appeal to our TargetAudience. The third quote we used was from one of our expert interviews the dietician she

remarks that A variety of sizes can be portrayed as healthy really.Suggesting that we finda solution in our documentary and again appeal to our target Audience. Using extracts fromthe actual documentary is a usual convention used in Radio Trailers as the radio trailer weanalysed also used this conve ntion.

Music- We also used the same music in our radio Trailer as we did in our documentary .

This was to help our brand identity but we also

felt the music was highly appropriate for our

Radio Trailer such as when Lauren was

speaking we played the Britney Spears song

Everytime as we played that music in our

documentary when Lauren was speaking then

as the topic she is speaking of is quite serious.

Whereas when Keshas song blah, blah, blah

plays it lightens the mood a little such as when

    the presenters are speaking.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRHAXSRcSH0 Britney Spears and

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dogXk1KmRI&feature=related Kesha.

Howeverwith our radio Trailer we had very limited time therefore our script and making of

the radio trailer was perhaps not as well as we could have done it if we had more time. Such

as we could have included the rhyme/introduction of our chosen radio station to make our

    radio trailer more professional.

    Developing Challenging Codes

    and Conventions

We developed conventions by using creative

treatment of actuality. Lauren has never had

anorexia however it is someones truth and there isnot such a thing as the whole truth. We had to use

Lauren as we did not have enough time to find

someone that had recovered from anorexia; also it

is a painful subject which could have been quite

hard for someone who had suffered to speak

about. But Lauren did provide us with many correct

statistics which made it look very professional.

  • 8/7/2019 Media question 1 (Repaired)

    14/29

    2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Whilst we were planning and researching for our 3 tasks we had to consider how we would

combine all three products effectively to create a clear brand identity. We also had to

consider how we could make all three tasks appealing to our Target Audience. Brand

Identity is very important to emphasise these products because clear communication is vital

with the audience, therefore we had to produce our tasks in a way that appealed to ourTarget Audience.

Purpose of our Documentary - Is to

explore how the media pressurise young

people in society today with things such

as body, weight, fashion, hair etc

everything to do with appearance. And

how does the media do this? We believed

this was a suitable topic for our Target

Audience. And we aimed for all three

tasks to appeal to our documentary.

Purpose of our Listings Page- Is to inform

our Target Audience of when our Documentary is

aired what time and what channel it will be

broadcasted on. It also gives more information to

the reader about our Documentary, key details and

persuade them to watch our documentary. The

audience will have some back ground information

about the topic of our documentary and people

included in our documentary such as Amy ourCase Study. Therefore when they come to watch it

they feel they will slightly know the characters and

their story. We focused on targeting our Target

Audience as we wanted to make them potential

    viewers.

Purpose of our Radio Trailer- Is to summarise

the topic of our Documentary in 30 secondsand gives the listeners an insight to what our

    documentary explores persuading people to

watch our documentary. It also promotes our

    Documentary and encourages our target

Audience or anyone listening to tune in to

    watch our documentary.

  • 8/7/2019 Media question 1 (Repaired)

    15/29

All of my three tasks have the same Target

    Audience in mind.

    Male and Females

Young People 17 to early 20s howeverwe

have a secondary audience in mind such as

adults who have a link with our Target

    Audience i.e. teachers, parents

All ethnicities, which live in Britain.

Interested in fashion and the media.

Ways in which my 3 tasks follow our Brand Identity

    Documentary

    Listings Page

    Radio Trailer

quest for perfectionAll three tasks contain the actual title of our

Documentary. This was to make sure all

viewers/readers knew what the name of our

documentary was. And for the two ancillary

tasks (Listings Page and Radio Trailer) they

    were both advertising/promoting our

documentary therefore they needed the title

of our documentary otherwise they wouldnt

know what there looking for if they wanted to

    view it.

All three tasks all contain ourcase Study Amy. In the documentary wefollow Amy doing her daily routine. This could appeal to the females and

perhaps some males in our Target Audience. On the radio we hear Amy

stating how her routine affects her. And in the Listings Page there is a

still from our Documentary of Amy, and the large image is also Amy.

However as our target Audience is males and females we didnt

necessarily apply that to our Listings Page as we had no males featured

in our listings page therefore our Listings Page is very female orientated

and does not appeal to our target Audience. If I could do the listings

page again I would feature George, the male in our documentary then

our Listings page would appeal to our Target Audience, as the Listings

Page is not extremely female orientated such as the colours we used

and the text. However as our Target Audience are young we should have

used just a few colours to make it look more attractive and bolder to our

    tar et audience.

    16/29

    Radio Trailer

    Documentary

Both our Documentary and Radio Trailer include the same

song Britney Spears Everytime. We decided to include

this music as it is very emotional and slow which matches

a certain mood in our documentary when Lauren is

speaking, as she is talking of recovering from anorexia

which is a very serious topic. We decided to also include

the instrumental version in our radio trailer as the topic ofour documentary is a serious matter as the short term and

long term effects can be bad. And as the Radio trailer is

promoting our documentary we need to give the listene rs

an insight to our documentary. Therefore the music and

links the documentary and the Radio Trailer together. The

music combines our brand identity even more so.

For both our Documentary and our Radio

Trailer we used the same presenters

voices, this is to keep our Brand identity

together. Also using both the male and

female voice within our documentary andradio appeals to our target Audience as it is

both male and females who we want to

    view our documentary.

A variety of sizes can beportrayed as healthy really.

Around 90% of cases of anorexia are in girls, so eventhough it affects a few males, its mainly young girls, and we were always told that5 -20%, of the people whohad anorexia would die.

    Radio Trailer

    Documentary

We used 2 quotes from the documentary

from two of our interviews one of them

being a direct interview and the other an

    expert interview, therefore adding personal

opinion and the experts quote adds

professionalism to our radio trailer. Using

the quotes links both our documentary and

    radio trailer together.

    17/29

Overall- I feel all three ancillary tasks combine together to make our Brand Identity

however, I feel our Listings Page should have had included a male as our target Audience is

both males and females. Furthermore as our target Audience are 17 to early 20s many of

them would not necessarily read a TV magazine to see what is on television, and they wo uld

perhaps hear the advertisement of our documentary on the radio.

    3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?

    OurTarget Audience:

    Our Secondary Audience

Are adults/parents those who have a link with ouractual target audience such as teachers or social

workers. The topic of our documentary may concern them andtherefore be of interest to them if they do have a closerelationship to a young female or male.

As our documentary is aired on Channel 4 we wantedto have quiet a brood audience who enjoyed watchingmainstream television.

For our audience feedback we had

our target audience to fill in a small

questionnaire based on their view of

    our documentary. Such as the

    actuality, following the codes and

    conventions and the topic we

    chose for our documentary.

Female and male- even though our

documentary id about image we stillwanted to appeal to males as it does affectthem as well.

Here are some images of our sample target audience (made up

of young males and females) during the viewing of our

    documentary.

The sample target audience viewing our documentary filled in a

questionnaire asking for opinions on several aspects of the

documentary. The questionnaire asked for an overall rating such as E xcellent, Very Good,

Good, Satisfactory, or P oor as well asking the viewers to suggest the most successful

and least successful aspects of our documentary.

We then took the findings from these questionnaires and created some graphs and tables to

gain a more analytical view of our results.

    Our Results from our Questionnaires

    Overall Response to Documentary

    Filming/Shooting of Appropriate Material

The choice of Topic for T.V

Editing so viewer can understand meaning

Overall our feedback came back quite positive with many choosing Excellent, Very Good

and Good for many of the questions asked ; however a few aspects of the questions askedcame back satisfactory so I am going to look into more depth of what positive and negative

    comments our target audience made.

What did ourTarget Audience like most about our Documentary?

Flows well and relates to Target Audience. Use of Statistics.

Liked how we edited the Case Study. Seemed realistic and professional -fast paced. Liked the editing and filming technique as it seemed professional and the

    music was effectively used.

Good information used in voice over.

    Using Sound and Music Appropriately

Using effects such as Transitions, Captions etc

    Appropriately

    Appropriateness for Target Audience

Professionalism/How well does it compare with

    real television Documentaries?

  • 8/7/2019 Media question 1 (Repaired)

    20/29

It made them think about how much pressure peop le actually feel about whatthey look like.

There was a good variety of shots.

What did ourTarget Audience least like about our Documentary?

To polish off transitions. Timing issues-shots were cutting at the wrong time.Use a different background for the presenting part.Improve sound quality.

Needed more variety of the images used in our opening. Most of the negative feedback we received I felt was expected as I to believed the points

they bought up were our weakest areas. The images we used in our opening were rushed

and weak as most were not our own pictures and

were blurred and didnt fit the screen properly.

This could not have been rectified in time for the

deadline as we could no longer use the cameras

and we needed to concentrate on finishing our

    actual documentary in time.

I also agreed that we needed a mis en scene

that was appropriate whilst we were presenting in

or documentary the white background made the

    shot look unprofessional.

However what I do not agree with is our feedback

    concerning our

    transitions I

    believe we used

    just enough of

    appropriate

    selection of

    transitions,

    which were not

    to obvious to

    confuse the

viewer. But our transition choices were quite rushed

  • 8/7/2019 Media question 1 (Repaired)

    21/29

therefore we could have probably made a few better choices concerning the transitions.

Overall Im very pleased with the feedback we received, as the

majority enjoyed viewing our documentary. However if we used a

larger feedback audience this would have given us a large r

amount of feedback to use. Also the questionnaires mainly

involved just ticking a box, so it may not be a precisemeasurement of their view. Even though are Target Audience

was appropriate when asked for feedback it was interesting that

people gave different responses to the same question therefore it

made me realise that the whole idea of audiences is not that

straight forward. The idea of one mass audience is challenged in

my feedback because they didnt all give the sane response even

though they all belong to my target Audience.

We had some quick feedback for our Radio Trailer and our Listings page there were some

positive but negative points about both of our ancillary products.

    Radio Trailer

    Positive

Works as a radio trailer has the key codes and conventions.

Content Good. Script Good. Consistent with the brand identity. The content included the same characters.

    Negative

Focuses on voiceover. No other effects used.Needs ambient sound for a fuller atmosphere. The sound needs modifying as

the sound is only coming out of one speaker.

    Listings Page

    Positive

Used two lots of softwarevery effectively [Indesign andPhotoshop]

    Images appropriate[converted from our documentary]

Effects like drop shadows, Good use of columns,

    headings and subheadings.

    Negative

Perhaps because of who are target audience is (young) we could have used a bitmore colour.

Overall- I feel that both our TV Listings Page and Radio Trailer were quite successful

however I agree with the negative comments we had from our Audience feedback and if we

had more time I would like to have changed these small things.

    4. How did you use media technologies in the construction and research,

    planning and evaluation stages?

Throughout this whole project I have had to use a variety of programmes in order to create

my main task (documentary) and my two ancillary tasks (Listings Page and Radio Trailer.)

Which in effect has developed my skills and understanding to create the three different

tasks. My skills have become far more advanced due to having to understand my Target

Audience and the usual codes and convention of professional documentaries, Listing Pages

    and Radio Trailers.

    Research and Planning Stages

I used a range of media technologies:

Internet: Before we began any of our threetasks we used regular computers to research

past documentaries and different topics we

could use for our own. For researching past

documentaries we used Youtube, and as our

documentary is stylised as a Channel 4

    documentary we viewed past documentaries

on Channel 4OD also. These resources were

vital for us to research and plan our own

documentary as it made us realise how we

could follow usual codes and conventions or

to develop them. It also helped refine who we

wanted to target our documentary towards

and what type of documentary we would

make. Youtube also allowed us to search for

appropriate songs that we wanted to include

    in our now documentary.

Blog-Due to us having to keep a blog of our

actions and how we were developing with ourtasks individually I had to make myself

familiar with how to use blogger.com

    https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLo g

    wra=1&fpui=2&naui=8#s01 On this website

we uploaded all our individual research andplanning tasks as we were all given different

tasks. It was important to add as many visual

components such as images, moving images,

different fonts, colours to make our blogs

more interesting which took s ome skill in the

beginning, however were easy to use after

    some practice.

    Moodle- Moodle allowed us to

    listen to examples of radio

adverts, which helped us plan our

own 30 second radio t railer. One

member of our group analysed a

couple of these and we then

    studied the codes and

conventions that we would use in

    our own radio trailer.

Google- We used Google tohelp us look for our chosen

    songs record labels to gain

permission to use the songs in

    our documentary.

    Construction Technologies

    Final Cut Express

Digital Camera- We took photographs of

images we believed related well with o ur chosen

topic (body image) and took images of what we

thought we could include in our final

documentary. Therefore we had to choose what

type of shots we would use for certain t hings in

our documentary such as interviews would most

likely be a Medium Close Up (MCU) as it is very

conventional for interviews to be a MCU shot.

However when we took images of Amy (casestudy) we decided sometimes when she was

talking we would zoom in so the shot would

become a close up as the viewer can see her

facial expressions clearly and feel they can relate

well with her. The digital cameras were easy to

use as we had to use them for last years project

therefore we knew how to zoom in to an image or

out and to delete necessary images that we didnt

    need.

Canon Filming Camera-We used the camera to

film footage for our documentary. How we

constructed the camera was important as was how

we situated the microphone for the sound levels, if

it was too close the sound level would be too loud

and if it was too far away from the speaker the

sound levels would be too low. We could also usethe camera without the microphone for footage we

needed without sound, which we could add music

in later. For some shots we decid ed to use the

camera hand held but it was vital the camera was

not to jerky as we did not want our documentary to

appear unprofessional. With the flexibility of a hand

held camera meant we had more opportunity to

shoot a variety of shots whether using the tripod,

    simple stills or tracking shots.

Final Cut was the programme we used to produce our

documentary. Our footage was imported onto here and cut down

if necessary. We could add text, any music or any sound we

didnt want in our documentary. For that we just lowered the

sound levels when you double clicked on the box that was

labelled for the sound. Before we imported the footage we

wanted for our documentary we had to log and transfer it a nd

during that we could edit that piece of footage as much as we

thought was necessary. If we needed to zoom in on a shot we

could also do this on final cut express which was very simple to

do. Final cut Express allowed us to add transitions when we

thought was necessary in our documentary that just meant us

selecting effects at the top of the box and we just had to drag the

effect we wanted in between the two shots. To decide what shots

we wanted in what order it was simple to order them on the line

with the boxes. At first I found Final Cut Express quite difficult but

the more I used it I realised it was quite straight forward and I felt

confident to try new stuff on the programme to make our

    documentary appear more professional.

At first I found it difficult to edit

sound but I found out you

could double click on the box

of sound we wanted to lower

or higher and it was just a

    case of moving the lines.

  • 8/7/2019 Media question 1 (Repaired)

    25/29

We also used Final Cut Express

to plan our radio trailer briefly; weselected what quotes we wanted

    from our characters in our

    documentary and copied them

    into another sequence.

Importing text on top of a shot

    in our documentary, we could

    choose what font where we

wanted it placed on the screen

and what size and colour we

    wanted our text.

    Selecting a

    transition that is

    appropriate for

    our documentary

    and the shot

    types.

It was simple to use log and

transfer and was simple to edit

    what pieces of footage we

    wanted which was very

    effective and time efficient.

    26/29

    GarageBand

During our documentary we have a

moment when there are a number of

images of clothes being thrown on the

bed, as the shots are very fast and we

wanted the effect of the clothes

    appearing from nowhere we decided

to take photos instead of filming.

Therefore we had to import the

images into final cut express, whichwas very self explanatory we just

    clicked file and import.

    Itunes would appear to

right of our screen this ishow we imported our

decision of song in to our

    Radio Trailer. We chose

    Britney Spears Everytime

so we saved the mp3 file

    into Itunes so we could

    import it successfully into

    Gara eBand.

To move any part ofspeech that we need to we

    just moved the box by

    simply clicking on the

    preferred box. You could

    also shorten the speech by

dragging the end of the box

to where needed it to be.

We used GarageBand to produce our Radio

Trailer it was very simple to use and was just a

case of importing the sound and moving the

speech to what order we needed to be to do

this we just added a extra line which made it

easier for us to get our Radio Trailer in the

order we wanted it to be. If the sound levels

needed adjusting it was very similar to how we

did it on Final Cut Express. It was case of

selecting what piece of sound we wanted

lowered and then at the bottom just eitherdragging it lower or higher.

    Used for adjusting the sound

    levels.

    27/29

    Adobe Indesign

Adobe Indesign was used to produce our Listings

page Article. Indesign is very much layering boxes.

So at first we imported the boxes where we wanted

our images and then the different boxes where we

wanted our text. I think Indesign worked very

effective as it is just layering the boxes, which

means you can easily drag the images or text for

where we wanted it. It also allowed us to add effects

such as a drop shadow on our smaller image, which

is conventional for a Listings Page article. We could

also change the colour font and size of the text

easily. To make the format a 2 page spread we had

to align the pages which we did by simply selecting

pages to the left of the screen

We could also arrange our article into

    three columns which follows the

conventions of a Listings Page article,

    therefore making it look more

    professional. The images are easily

imported by selecting the correct type

of box to select the image we wanted.

We could also copy the colour of the

background of the picture to match

the page of where our article was to

    combine the two pages together.

    Selecting

    colour and

    then

    swatches

    allowed us

    to change

    the colour of

    the text.

    Comic Life

    Burning the Discs

Overall- I feel I have learnt how to use different technologies through the process of making

all three tasks that. Such as using Final Cut Express as I felt that was the most difficult to

    use in the beginning.

We used Comic Life on the Apple

    Mac Computers to produce a

storyboard of the 9 images we

    believed as a group that

    represented our documentary. It

was very simple to use as we

    selected how many boxes we

needed on each page, we then just

copy and pasted the images in the

boxes and the then typed text in the

    boxes opposite.

    Burning our Final documentary and

    Radio Trailer to disk required

further skill. We first inserted a

blank CD which was compatible to

transfer our two tasks onto. To burn

our radio Trailer onto dick we had

to create a new project on

    GarageBand we then exported our

final radio Trailer and sent it to

iTunes and from iTunes we burntour trailer to disc.
