Independent pharmacies represent 37 percent of all retail pharmacies in the U.S. That’s an $88.8 billion market!

Independent pharmacies are privately owned retail pharmacies. The

majority of the 22,000 independent pharmacies in the U.S. are single-

store operations, but a good portion of owners—27 percent—have two

or more pharmacies. As privately owned small businesses, independent

pharmacies vary widely in their services and offerings. Most provide

traditional prescription dispensing along with other health care services,

such as vaccines and immunizations, diabetes counseling, high blood

pressure screenings, medication therapy management and more.

Independent pharmacies can also specialize in certain areas, such

as long term care services, assisted living services and compounding

services, among others.

Independent retail pharmacies often serve rural communities. More than

37 percent of independent pharmacies are located in an area with a

population between 10,000 and 50,000. In rural areas, the independent

pharmacy is often the only access point for consumers to receive

immediate health advice and to obtain the medications, over-the-counter

products and health supplies they need. Patients across the U.S. value

independent pharmacists for their services. Year after year, independent

pharmacists have ranked in the top one or two slots as the most trusted

health care professionals in the nation.

WHOEmpower! DiabetesCare Education classes are designed for people with Type II diabetes. A licensed pharmacist leads every session.

WHYThese classes not only include educational information about diabetes, we also discuss the many factors of living with diabetes, from medications and lifestyle changes to handling the emotional struggles that can accompany diabetes.

Each session is two and half-hours long. Updates will be sent to your physician after each class. You will have many opportunities to review blood glucose testing and insulin injection at each session. Empower! Diabetes Education is covered by Medicare Part B. Red Cross Pharmacy can also bill Medicare Part B for supplies such as diabetic shoes, testing supplies and breathing treatments. Ask a pharmacist for more details.

EliteCare also addresses medication adherence, which is a critically important step in achieving the therapeutic outcomes set by you and your physician. Medication adherence is how well you take your medication in comparison to how your doctor prescribed it.

How does EliteCare work?1. MEET

A pharmacist will meet with you and ask a few short questions, then synchronize your refills to one day each month.

2. FILLOne week prior to your monthly refill date the pharmacy will begin filling your prescriptions and notify you of any issues.

3. VERIFYYour physician will be contacted regarding any questions, prior authorizations, refill requests, etc., before you run out of medication.

4. PICK-UPYou can choose to receive a personal phone call, text message, e-mail, or automated call when all of your medications are ready for pick-up.

Elite Care helps you stay up-to-date with all your medications on a monthly basis. This, in turn, may also reduce your overall healthcare costs through better disease management, potentially reducing hospitalizations and visits to the doctor’s office.
