Live racing at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino begins on Friday, December 16, and the 72-day meet will be powered by a highly lucrative stakes schedule worth over $5 million.

Over $1.5 million in purses will be offered on Sunland Derby (GR III) day – Sunday, March 26, 2017. The 14th running of the $800,000 Sunland Derby (GR III) at one and one-eighth miles will be the richest and most important race of the meet for three-year-old Thoroughbreds seeking a berth in the 2017 Kentucky Derby. The winner of the Sunland Derby (GR III) receives 50 critical qualifying points for entry into the Kentucky Derby. A record crowd of 19,081 fans came to witness the 2015 edition of the Sunland Derby (GR III).

The 2015 Sunland Derby (GR III) winner, Firing Line, ran second to eventual Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the 2015 Kentucky Derby. Sunland Derby (GR III) winners Chitu (2014), Governor Charlie (2013), Daddy Nose Best (2012) and Twice the Appeal (2011) all ran in the Kentucky Derby. In 2009, Mine That Bird parlayed a fourth-place finish in the Sunland Derby to a victory in the Kentucky Derby at 50-1 odds.

In addition to the Sunland Derby (GR III), the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks, $100,000 Harry W. Henson Handicap, $100,000 Bill Thomas Memorial Handicap, $100,000 La Coneja Stakes, $100,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Oaks and $100,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Derby will help propel Sunland Park’s greatest day on March 26.

Thoroughbred stakes races are abundant on opening weekend. The $65,000 KLAQ Handicap for open Thoroughbreds racing five furlongs is set for Saturday, December 17. Elite New Mexico-bred horses compete in the $85,000 Johnie L. Jamison Handicap at six and one-half furlongs on Sunday, December 18. New Mexico-bred fillies and mares also race on December 18, going six furlongs in the $85,000 New Mexico State Racing Commission Handicap.

The $100,000 Riley Allison Derby at one mile on Sunday, January 29 and the $100,000 Mine That Bird Derby at one and one-sixteenth miles on Sunday, February 26 serve as the chief local prep races for the $800,000 Sunland Derby (GR III).

On Sunday, April 16, the $150,000 Sunland Park Handicap and the $110,000 added Copper Top Futurity get the limelight.

World-class Quarter Horse racing will also be part of the Sunland product. The 16th running of the $350,000 Championship at Sunland Park (GR 1) and the $200,000 Sunland Park Juvenile Championship are set for Saturday, December 31. The sensational older Quarter Horse star Zoomin Effortlessly won last year’s edition of the Championship at Sunland Park. The $150,000 estimated West Texas Derby will be on Saturday, April 1, 2017. The $200,000 estimated West Texas Futurity finale is set for Saturday, April 15.

Live racing at Sunland Park will take place on a primarily Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday basis through April 18, 2017. The only exceptions will be two Wednesday afternoon cards in December because of the Christmas holidays. Live racing will take place on Wednesday, December 21 and Wednesday, December 28. There will be no racing on Saturday, December 24 (Christmas Eve) or Sunday, December 25 (Christmas Day). Post time to start the meet will be 12:45PM. Nine races will be carded each day. Please let me know how we can best serve your media needs.

CLIMATE It’s rare to have a day in summer or winter when the sun doesn’t shine. In fact, it shines over 300 days a year! Winters are usually mild with an average daytime temperature of 60° F and an average low of 32.5° F. Occasionally, temperatures will drop enough to see snow, but it never lasts long, just enough for kids and some young-at-heart adults to get excited about the unusual winter-wonderland scene covering the desert, mountains and valley. Then, it’s gone as quickly as it came. The summers are hot and dry with a little less than 9 inches of rainfall each year. The average temperature during the day is 95° F if you just count June, July and August. When you consider the five months of May through September that actually make up the summer, the average daytime temperature drops to 91.5° F. It isn’t uncommon for the thermometer to drop 20 degrees or more during the summer night.

LOCATIONSituated on the border of two nations and three states, Sunland Park lies in the Chihuahuan Desert, 3,762 feet above sea level. The Rio Grande River flows directly parallel to the track, separating Texas from Mexico, and it creates a lush green valley ripe for farming and ranching. The area’s varied topography presents a scenic landscape and provides a pleasing contrast between arid desert, green valley and rugged mountains.

TIME ZONEEl Paso and Sunland Park are in the Mountain Time Zone and observe Daylight Saving Time from mid-March through October.

POPULATIONEl Paso is the sixth largest city in the state of Texas, with 649,121 inhabitants per the 2000 census (including El Paso County residents, that number is raised to 728,943). Just across the border and within walking distance of each other’s downtown areas, Juarez is home to 1,700,000 people. Las Cruces is the fastest-growing city in New Mexico and the 11th fastest growing in the nation. Las Cruces, New Mexico, lies in the heart of the fertile Mesilla Valley and claims a population of 74,267. The population of Sunland Park, New Mexico, the home of Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino, is approximately 8,179. This makes for a combined total population of over 2 million, creating the largest metropolitan area on the border between the United States and Mexico.

SUNLAND DERBY (GR III) AND SUNLAND PARK OAKS ARE IMPORTANT PREP RACES FOR KENTUCKY DERBY AND KENTUCKY OAKS

Entry into the 2017 Kentucky Derby and Oaks will be based on a points qualifying system. Candidates earn points by placing in a series of important prep races. Here is the schedule including the $800,000 Sunland Derby (GR III) and the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks on March 26, 2017.

In the revamped system, the top four finishers of the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park, the Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds, the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct, the Santa Anita Derby at Santa Anita, the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn, the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland and the UAE Derby in Dubai will earn points on a 100-40-20-10 system.

The $800,000 SUNLAND DERBY (GR III) will be part of eight races where the top four finishers earn points on a 50-20-10-5 scale. The Sunland Derby (GR III) winner earns a coveted 50 points for entry to the 2017 Kentucky Derby. The other 50-point Derby preps include the Risen Star at Fair Grounds, the Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream, the Gotham

TAKING SUNLAND PARK RACETRACK AND CASINO TO NEW HEIGHTS AS GENERAL MANAGER

Less than four years ago, Rick Baugh was named the new general manager of Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino. Baugh took over the helm at Sunland Park, armed with a wealth of racing and gaming experience. Early in his racing career, Baugh worked at the fabled Phillips Ranch, the home of the great Dash For Cash. During an 11-year stint at the ranch, he fulfilled numerous duties, including preparing young horses for the prestigious sales.

In 1991, Baugh left the Phillips Ranch to work for Ruidoso Downs. Five years later, the hard-working Texan took over as general manager of the mountain oval. Baugh went on to help R.D. Hubbard build Zia Park, and in 2006 and 2007, he was in charge of the racing operations at both tracks. When Zia Park was purchased by Penn National for $200 million, Baugh remained as a consultant and was named assistant general manager for Zia Park in 2007. In the years that followed, Zia Park experienced tremendous growth. Baugh continued in that capacity until accepting the position of general manager at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino in 2013.

at Aqueduct, the Tampa Bay Derby at Tampa Bay Downs, the San Felipe at Santa Anita, the Rebel at Oaklawn and the Spiral at Turfway Park. 2014 Sunland Derby (GR III) winner Chitu split the field in the Kentucky Derby (GR 1). Third place Sunland Derby (GR III) finisher Commissioner was a very close second in the 2014 Belmont Stakes (GR I). 2015 Sunland Derby (GR III) winner Firing Line ran second to Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the 2015 Kentucky Derby.

The $200,000 SUNLAND PARK OAKS rates a serious prep for the Kentucky Oaks with a 50-20-10-5 point scale. The Fair Grounds Oaks, Gulfstream Park Oaks, Santa Anita Oaks, Ashland Stakes, Comely Stakes and Fantasy Stakes will award a 100-40-20-10 point basis. 2011 Sunland Park Oaks winner Plum Pretty went on to win the 2011 Kentucky Oaks.

The NTRA Safety and Integrity Alliance is a standing organization

whose purpose is to establish standards and practices to

promote safety and integrity in horse racing and to secure their

implementation. Corporate partners of the Alliance include Pfizer

Animal Health and Hagyard Equine Medical Institute. Information

on the Alliance, including the Alliance Code of Standards, can be

found at www.NTRAalliance.com.

“Sunland Park has done an extraordinary job of working with the

New Mexico Racing Commission to make the safety of horses

and riders, and the integrity of the sport top priorities at its track

in New Mexico,” said Alex Waldrop, President and CEO of the

NTRA and acting head of the Alliance. “We commend Sunland

for making great strides since their initial accreditation with the

implementation of a number of best practices track-wide.”

Sunland Park received its initial Alliance accreditation in 2011

and is one of 23 racing facilities currently fully accredited by the

Alliance. All accreditations and reaccreditations carry an effective

period of two years. The accreditation was the culmination of

a lengthy process that began with the track’s completion of a

48-page written application and continued as Sunland hosted

several meetings with Alliance officials. An on-site review included

inspections of all facets of the racing facility. Interviews were also

conducted with track executives, racetrack personnel, jockeys,

owners, trainers, stewards and fans.

In areas intended to create a safer racing environment, best

practices in use at Sunland Park include an on-site substance

abuse and addiction treatment program; utilization of the Uniform

National Trainers Test (adopted by the New Mexico State Racing

Commission); and notification of House Rules in the Condition

Book. In areas of equine drug testing and penalties, best practices

identified include out-of-competition testing for blood and/or gene

doping agents; frozen storage and retroactive “supertesting” of

suspect plasma or urine samples; and use of an official testing

laboratory that is fully-accredited by the Racing Medication and

Testing Consortium (RMTC); and proper security assessment and

training. Regarding the health and safety of jockeys, best practices

recognized include adherence to the Association of Racing

Commissioners International (ARCI) model rules pertaining to the

scale of weights and jockey qualifications.

Baugh said, “I’ve been fortunate enough to work with B.F. Phillips; R.D. Hubbard; the largest parimutuel gaming company in the world, Penn National; and now Stan Fulton.”

Under his leadership, Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino continues to thrive and develop. Mr. Baugh works tirelessly to streamline and plot new avenues of success for Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino. Construction of a luxurious new hotel on property is already underway with a completion date of early Spring 2017. A beautiful renovation of the Sunland Park Turf Club is certain to enhance the fan experience. Four aerial 16 ft. by 9 ft. HD Video Projector screens are in place and make a powerful impression.

Because of the EHV-1 virus outbreak at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino in early 2016, both the $800,000 Sunland Derby (GR III) and $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks were canceled and rescheduled for Sunday, March 26, 2017. The $415,000 Sunland Park Festival of Racing Stakes, $200,000 Plum Pretty Stakes and five more big-money stakes were held in their place on Sunday, March 20, 2016.

Racing as the even-money favorite, Collected delivered the goods and coasted home as a definitive two-length winner in the $415,000 Sunland Park Festival of Racing Stakes. The Grade 3 Sham Stakes winner from Santa Anita Park returned to winning splendor at Sunland Park under jockey Martin Garcia. The chestnut son of City Zip employed an early attack with a smooth cruising speed to control matters in Sunland Park’s richest Thoroughbred race. Garcia placed his charge on a conservative lead and was able to completely control the tempo of the one and one-eighth mile test. When challenged by a very energetic Gettysburg at the quarter pole, Collected responded kindly and kept on rolling for winning trainer Bob Baffert.

Collected romped to a daylight win in a fast time of 1:48.90, a little more than a second off the track record held by Proceed in 1:47.37. Garcia reflected in the winner’s circle, “I used a little bit of horse at the start, but once we got the lead, he was cruising. When I asked him to go, he responded nicely.”

The $170,000 OBS March Sales purchase of 2015 earned a big paycheck of $207,500 from his efforts. He is owned by Speedway Stable, LLC. The Triple Crown-nominated three-year-old colt has 3 wins, 1 second and 1 fourth from 5 starts. He’s already earned over $243,000 in his young career. The promising sophomore was fourth to Suddenbreakingnews in the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park last winter.

Todd Pletcher’s Gettysburg ran a bold race under jockey Javier Castellano. Breaking from the #11 post position, the Pioneer of the

Nile colt was forced wide on both turns but turned in a stellar effort, nonetheless. He took multiple shots at the winner and never quit. Castellano said, “I was forced to ask for speed early because of the wide post position. He still ran huge and never quit. He ran a great race and was running well at the end.”

Gettysburg finished second at odds of 8-5 and earned $91,300 for the WinStar Farm led by Kenny Trout. The runner-up shipped in from Florida and was a maiden winner at Gulfstream Park.

Mine That Bird Derby winner Concord Fast loomed large with a half-mile to go and tried hard to stay in range of the top two. The Justin Evans-trained runner led the local contingent and finished third with jockey Ry Eikleberry. He earned $49,800 for John Wilkins of the Teed Off Stable.

Thrilled powered past Family Tree to take a driving win in the $200,000 Plum Pretty at one and one-sixteenth miles. Ridden by Javier Castellano, Thrilled was well-positioned throughout in the stalking position and was breathing down the neck of front-running Family Tree into the second turn.

Todd Pletcher’s talented filly turned the screws on Family Tree at the top of the stretch, and the duo battled through most of the final furlongs. Thrilled put away her foe and won by 2 lengths. The daughter of Unclo Mo earned a healthy $124,000 for owner Michael Tabor. The winner was bet down as the even-money favorite, coming off a second place in the Grade 2 Demoiselle at Aqueduct last November. Pletcher had Thrilled ready to roll off the freshening while wearing blinkers for the first time.

The team of Tom and Sandy McKenna, longtime breeders in the state of New Mexico, have also achieved tremendous success as owners, particularly in this decade. Judge Lanier Racing has dominated the scene the past few seasons at Sunland Park, where last year they topped the standings with 16 wins from 129 starters and amassing earnings of over $395,000. Among their stakes winners last season was Rising Giant, winner of the Albert Dominguez Memorial Handicap with trainer Simon Buechler. Judge Lanier also scored a victory with Bold Ego Handicap winner African Rose with trainer Miguel Hernandez. African Rose won the Harry Henson Handicap three straight

times in 2013-2015. The outstanding race mare also found the winner’s circle in the 2015 Albuquerque Distaff Handicap and nearly broke the track record. Judge Lanier Racing has been at or near the top of the owners’ standings at nearly all five tracks in the Land of Enchantment, winning season-ending titles at Zia Park and SunRay Park and Casino as well as the Downs at Albuquerque. Judge Lanier Racing has had tremendous stakes success in recent years with McKenna’s Justice, winning the Zia Park Distance Championship in 2011. Since 2014, Judge Lanier Racing has won more than 180 races with purse earnings topping $3 million.

The McKennas own the 1,200-acre McKenna Thoroughbreds ranch near Taiban in the eastern section of New Mexico. Tom McKenna grew up in El Paso, Texas, and he was exposed to racing at the age of 12. His grandfather was a prominent corporate judge in El Paso who had owned both Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses. The McKennas honor the memory of the judge with the moniker Judge Lanier Racing. Dominique’s Cat, K.O. Punch and McKenna’s Justice stand at stud at McKenna Thoroughbreds.

Hailing from the mighty Justin Evans barn, Concord Fast rolled to a sweeping victory in the $100,000 Mine That Bird Overnight Stake going one mile. The three-year-old gelded son of Concord Point rocketed from off the pace under a well-timed ride from Ry Eikleberry. Concord Fast delivered a five-wide attack, racing for home and speeding through the stretch for a runaway victory.

Trainer Justin Evans capped off another lucrative season as Sunland Park and Casino’s leading Thoroughbred trainer with Concord Fast taking top honors in the $100,500 Riley Allison Stakes, the final stakes race of the 2015-16 live racing season. With the meet’s leading Thoroughbred rider Ry Eikleberry aboard, Concord Fast swept to the lead passing the furlong pole, getting past a stubborn Ten Penny Cents and gradually pulling clear to win by 1 1/2 lengths.

RISING GIANT 2016 WINNER

Rising Giant, a grandson of Giant’s Causeway, closed fast in the final furlong to win the $85,000 Albert Dominguez Memorial Handicap in 2016. Let go at over 8-1 odds, Rising Giant patiently waited for his time to pounce in the one and one-sixteenth mile race for older New Mexico-breds. Winning jockey Enrique Gomez roused his mount in the final stanza, and Rising Giant swept on past the pace setting Song of Laura and held safe from Streaks Bro to win by a half-length.

Claimed for $10,000 in November 2015 at Zia Park by Judge Lanier Racing, Rising Giant continues to prove a most worthy adversary in New Mexico-bred routes. The five-year-old gelded son of The Way Home has won nine races in less than two years. The Albert Dominguez was his first stakes triumph. Judge Lanier Racing led by Tom and Sandy McKenna received a winner’s check of $51,000. Rising Giant was timed in 1:43.70. He returned $19.00 to win.

His mounts have earned nearly $1.2 million over the last two seasons as he has been particularly effective in big-money stakes races. Among his prestigious wins came aboard Wagon Full of Gold in the $100,000 Bank of America New Mexico Challenge. Ramos rode the upset winner for trainer Wes Giles in a terrific performance. Ramos enjoyed another lucrative score aboard Jess Cruzin on By in the $229,860 New Mexican Spring Futurity. Sunland Park’s third leading Quarter Horse rider won 28 races from 135 mounts, resulting in a strong 21-percent winning clip. His horses generated over $616,000 in earnings during the 76-day meet. In 2012, Martinez piloted Little Bit Southern to a driving win in the $85,000 Lou Wooten-Sydney Valentini Handicap and came back two weeks later to win the $126,512 Sunland Park Winter Quarter Horse Derby with Our First Corona. Martinez was the perfect teammate for AQHA Distance Champion All About Larry in 2013. The pair rocketed to a four-length victory in the $63,090 Red Cell New Mexico Challenge, going 870 yards. Salvador’s versatile riding skills make him an attractive choice for New Mexico trainers. The talented jockey agent Rick Kloeppel handles Salvador’s business. Martinez frequently rides for such top outfits as Mike Joiner and Paul Jones. He finished second in the Sunland Park standings last year with 19 winners.

ESGAR RAMIREZ The masterful Esgar Ramirez is a record 8-time Sunland Park Quarter Horse jockey champion and one of the world’s best. Ramirez led the nation in Quarter Horse earnings, topping $4.1 million in 2016.

Eyema Blue Wagon generated a picture-perfect run to win the 58th running of the $217,904 West Texas Futurity (Grade 2). Racing as the 6-5 favorite, Eyema Blue Wagon showed no signs of stress and immediately broke on top at the break of the 300 yard classic. The brown two-year-old colt by Pyc Paint Your Wagon took control and defeated Jess Prize Me by a long neck at the wire.

Zoomin Effortlessly withstood a late burst from 2014 World Champion Jrc Callas First and pulled clear late to win the $350,000 Championship at Sunland Park (Grade 1) going 400 yards. Santos Carrizales rode the champion to his 12th career win.

Dismissed at odds of 18-1, Carson City Girl rocketed in deep stretch to collect a lucrative win in the 44th running of the $190,119 Shue Fly Stakes. Under clutch rider Larry Gamez, Carson City Girl recovered from a slow start and finished with tremendous energy to win the 400-yard dash by three parts of a length over fellow longshot My Mojito.
