James Clark will enter his fi rst season as head coach of the Eureka

College baseball program in 2012. A native of Victoria, Ill., Clark

was formerly the baseball head coach at Spoon River College in

Canton, Ill. and was a four-year NCAA Division III baseball student-

athlete at Knox College.

Clark comes to Eureka after coaching at NJCAA Division II Spoon

River for the last two seasons. He inherited a team in August 2009

that was winless during the 2009 season, eventually guiding Spoon

River to fi ve wins in 2010 and eight victories in 2011. During his

two years as head coach, Clark led Spoon River to victories over

traditional junior college powers John Wood and Illinois Central.

In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Clark was the

fi rst-base coach for the Quincy Gems of the summer collegiate

Prospect League in 2011. Clark helped guide the Gems to a 40-18

overall record and a league championship.

Clark’s father, John, is the baseball head coach at ROWVA High

School in Oneida, Ill. and the Oneida American Legion squad.

James began his baseball coaching career at the age of 16,

assisting his father at Williamsfi eld Middle School. As a college

student at Knox, James coached alongside his father with the

junior and senior Oneida American Legion teams.

“I am pleased to welcome James Clark as our new baseball head

coach,” Eureka Director of Athletics Paul Bryant said on the date

of his Clark’s hiring in August 2011. “Coach Clark has shown

tremendous promise as a young collegiate head coach and we’re

excited for the energy and dedication he will bring to continue the

improvement made by our baseball program.”

Clark graduated from Knox College in Galesburg, Ill. in 2009 with

a B.A. in economics and was a four-year member of the Prairie

Fire’s baseball team. He was a three-time qualifi er for the Midwest

Conference’s Academic All-Conference Team from 2007 through

2009 and helped Knox to a Midwest Conference championship and

an appearance in the NCAA Division III national regional in 2008.

The Eureka College baseball program will enter a new era in 2012

as former NCAA Division III baseball student-athlete James Clark

takes over as head coach of the Red Devils. Clark will try to direct

the Red Devils back to the top-half of the St. Louis Intercollegiate

Athletic Conference standings and into the SLIAC postseason for

the fi rst time since 2010.

A total of 14 letterwinners, eight pitchers and fi ve starters return

from a year ago. The biggest bat and strongest arm back in the

fold for EC will be senior Blake McConkey. The Fairview, Ill.

native enters his fourth and fi nal collegiate baseball season as

a career .340 hitter with seven career pitching victories. He will

anchor Eureka’s pitching rotation and batting order in 2012.

McConkey will be joined as four-year seniors by outfi elder Michael

Hammerstrand. No Eureka baseball player has played in more

games than Hammerstrand since the beginning of the 2008

season, as the Bloomington, Ill. native has appeared in 70 contests

over his fi rst three seasons. He will continue to play a major role in

the Eureka outfi eld.

Three other seniors will suit up for the Red Devils in 2012. Utility

player Mike Daxenbichler is set for his second season in a Eureka

uniform after hitting .311 in 35 starts last season between the

infi eld and outfi eld. He will continue to be a versatile weapon for

Clark this spring in both the infi eld and outfi eld.

Pierce Furrow will also play his fi nal collegiate season in 2012

after playing in all 36 games last season. A switch-hitter, Furrow

is capable of playing in the outfi eld or behind the plate and will

provide depth at both positions.

Perhaps Eureka’s best offensive option off the bench last season,

Mitch Johnson returns for Eureka in 2012 after hitting at a .353

clip in 34 at-bats last season. He earned 10 starting assignments

and belted his fi rst career home run against Westminster on April

30.

Junior pitcher John Berns will help bolster Eureka’s pitching depth

after fi ring 65.1 innings over his fi rst two seasons in a Eureka

uniform.

A talented group of sophomores return for the Red Devils in 2012,

as eight different second-year players are back after contributing

as freshmen last spring.

Stephen Davis will give the Red Devils depth in the outfi eld and on

the mound after playing in 16 games last season. Grant DeWitt

also returns after playing as the Red Devils’ starting shortstop in 33

games last season, the most by a Eureka freshman in 2011.

Jordan Hodel gives the Red Devils an excellent power threat at

second base after playing in 33 contests last year. He crushed his

fi rst career home run at MacMurray on April 13 of last spring.

Kyle Kiesewetter, Nate Louis and Bryan Meyer each contributed

to the Eureka pitching staff as rookies in 2011 and will continue in

that role this season. The trio combined to win four games and

throw nearly 100.0 innings last year, and Meyer’s effort against

Spalding late in the season earned him a SLIAC Pitcher of the

Week award. Each player is also capable of playing in the outfi eld.

Brian Munson and Trevor Teal round out the group of returning

sophomores. Each player can chip in behind the plate, and Teal

will also contribute to the Eureka pitching staff.

A total of 13 newcomers will join Clark’s program to start the 2012

season, fi ve of which have previous collegiate baseball experience.

Senior infi elder Eric Cuevas comes to Eureka after stints at NCAA

Division I Chicago State and NAIA Roosevelt. Junior outfi elder

Eric Lopez joins the program with prior stops at Division III

Elmhurst and a successful junior college stint at Lake County.

Seniors Blake McConkey (left) and Michael Hammerstrand (right) are the only four-year players on the 2012 roster. McConkey

is the active leader in several offensive and pitching categories, while Hammerstrand’s 70 career games played are the most

by any current Red Devil.

Carson Andrew (Sauk Valley), Kevin Dooley (Spoon River) and Daniel Imbery (Prairie

State) bring extensive junior college experience to the Red Devils and will have each

have two years of eligibility remaining. Dooley is especially familiar with Clark after having

played for the Eureka skipper at Spoon River in 2010 and 2011.

Seven Eureka players are new to collegiate baseball, including freshmen Jake

Baumgardner, Robby Cooper, John Kurtz, Tyler Ledbetter and Nick Passarella.

The Red Devils will travel east to begin the season, taking a fi ve-game trip through

Tennessee and North Carolina for games against Maryville (Tenn.) (March 13), Guilford

(March 14) and Greensboro (March 14-15). A doubleheader at Robert Morris-Springfi eld

on March 19 wraps up the season-opening seven-game road trip.

Eureka will begin the home portion of its schedule on March 21 versus Illinois College at

Henry Sand Field. The 24-game SLIAC schedule will begin in Louisville, Ky. on March 24

with a three-game series against Spalding.

The Red Devils will play SLIAC home games against MacMurray (March 28), Blackburn

(April 11), Webster (April 14-15), Principia (April 20-21) and Greenville (May 2). SLIAC

road trips include Westminster (March 31-April 1), MacMurray (April 6), Fontbonne (April

6-7), Blackburn (April 18) and Greenville (April 25).

Eureka will also play non-conference games against Knox (March 26), Robert Morris-

Springfi eld (April 2), Illinois College (April 9), Monmouth (April 23), Chicago (April 28) and

Knox (April 30).

The top four teams in the fi nal SLIAC regular season standings, excluding NCAA Division

III provisional member Spalding, will qualify for the double-elimination SLIAC Tournament

in early May. The winner of that tournament will earn the SLIAC’s automatic berth to the

NCAA Division III Tournament.
