Horlick History

William Horlick High School has a lot of history going back further than the City of Racine Parks andRecreation Department can trace it. The school was named after the inventor Mr. William Horlick Sr., MrWilliam Horlick Sr. was born in Gloucestshire England, February 23, 1846. Two of his sons, James andWilliam Jr. became the founders of Horlicks Malted Milk Company. William Horlick grew up in his nativecountry, but in 1869 came to the USA. He opened up a business to manufacture and prepared food forinfants, invalids and the aged. The growth of this trade demanded larger quarters, so William HorlickSr. purchased ten acres of land adjoining the city limits of Racine. In 1879, Horlicks Food company built

their rst building in Racine, Wisconsin basically for the manufacturing of their Horlick Malted Milk.

This company was located on Northwestern Avenue, right behind Racine Unieds Central Ofce.Their business had grown in volume and importance. James Horlick returned to England to open upa branch while William Horlick Jr. stayed in Racine and ran the business in Racine and was also CityTreasurer. Mr. Horlick Sr. was well known around Racine. He helped to establish Horlicks Racine Air-port, was a director of the Racine Journal Times, a member of the board of St. Lukes Hospital andalso Mayor of Racine from 1907 1911. He had been particularly active in the support of the cause oeducation and for many years was School Director for the Unied. William Horlick Sr. spent his moneyby giving back to the community. These substantial gifts included Memorial Hall, a maternity wing at

St. Lukes Hospital, Island Park, Horlick Athletic Field, and land for the high school that was names inhis honor. William Horlick Sr. died at his Northwestern Avenue home in 1936 at the age of 90 years old

William Horlick High School was built in 1928, just north of Horlicks Malted Milk Corporate Of-ce in Racine, Wisconsin. The school is located at 2119 Rapids Drive. The high schools ofciamascot is Polaris, the North Star, however, Racine Horlick is probably better known by their unof-cial mascot, The Rebel Yeller. The change is rumored to have occurred in the mid 1990s whenthe boys basketball coach, Reb, coached them to a winning season. At that point the team becameknown as Rebs Rebels. That is how the Rebels name came around. William Horlick Sr. was able tosee the school names after him built. Since then, there has been controversy over the Rebel YellerMascot due to implications construed by disassociated visual similarities to the Confederate States

of America. The schools ofcial colors are scarlet and gray. William Horlick High School is a publicfour year school. Due to overcrowding, an addition was built in 1961 to enlarge the school. Hor-lick has had a long standing cross town rivalry with Washington Park High School and still does

Football has been a big part of Racine since as early as 1922. Recently, William Horlick Field celebrat-ed their 85th Anniversary of the rst recorded football game played there. The rst team that played atHorlick Field was the Racine Regulators in 1915. The team took a hiatus in 1918 due to World War I andthe Spanish Flue Epidemic, but reorganized in 1919 with the help from the local American Legion Postand William Horlick Sr. The team then became known as the Horlick-Racine Legion. One moment inthe history of football in Racine occurred on October 1, 1922. The Chicago Bears lead by George Halasroared into Horlick Field to play the Horlick-Legion and defeated them 6-0 in front of 4,000 fans. TheLegion rebounded the next week by beating Curly Lambeaus Green Bay Packers. Horlick Field was alsohome to the rst Thanksgiving Day game in NFL history which was on Thursday, November 20, 1922

In 1994, the Horlick Rebel Booster Club was formed to encourage more parental involvement withthe team and coaching staff. This club has continued to be a success and has grown bigger every yearThere are ofces in the booster Club, but once your son signs up for football, you are automatically apart of the Booster Club. Over the years, the Booster Club has assisted with various fundraisers, pro-vides Thursday night pasta Meals for the Varsity Football Team, produced this program book, purchasedpractice eld equipment, sold Rebel spirit wear, and in November at the end of the football season,honors all of Horlicks football teams a a banquet where they receive awards, great food and company

Greetings and welcome to tonights ballgame. Tis years Rebels have worked extremelyhard over the o season and throughout the heat o summer two-a-days practices. Tey havetrained in the weight room and with eld training exercises including tire pulls, tractor tire fips,barrel throws, armer walks, and plyometrics. we look orward to elding a team that will give

maximum eort on every play and make amily, riends, alumni and ans prouod to supportRebel Football. You will likely notice some changes to this years oense as we are making an e-ort to establish a strong running game and utilize our skilled athletes in various ways. Te 2010season has brought changes to the deensive side o the ball as well. We will be incorporating anew 3-5-3 stack deense that will be lled with constant movement, blitzes and stunts. We areexcited or the changes and ecouraged by the commitment we have seen rom this years team.We look orward to improvement each and every day as we strive to keep the strong traditiono Rebel Football alive! We ask that you are positive and encouraging o our young athletes andencourage sportsmanship in the stands through leading by example.

SPORTSMANSHIP can be dened as one word, RESPECT.

Respect for ourselves, respect for our school and respect for guests of our school. Re-spect builds a positive image not only with the community but within all those in anyway connected with activities in our school. In order to establish respect for our athleticprogram, all those involved (coaches, athletes and spectators) must be willing to behavein such a way so those who see our program will think of it (and us) in a positive way.

The responsibilities of SPORTSMANSHIP

The Player

1. Treats the opponents with respect.2. Plays hard, but plays within the rules.3. Exercises self control at all times, setting the example for others to follow.4. Respects ofcials and accepts their decisions without gesture or argument.

5. Wins without boasting, losses without excuses and never quits.6. Always remembers that it is a privilege to represent the school and community.

The Coach

1. Treats own players and opponents with respect.2. Inspires in the athlete a love for the game and the desire to compete fairly.3. Is the type of person he/she wants the athlete to be.4. Disciplines those on the team who display unsportsmanlike behavior.5. Respects the judgement and interpretation of the rules by the ofcials.6. The Spectator

Silver-star awards are given to players who represent our program in the classroom, community, and on the feld.

Te awards are given or actions that represent the true meaning o a Rebel. Tis Rebel epitomizes hard work,hustle, aggressiveness, intelligence, leadership, sportsmanship, and dedication to the team. Tese stars identiythe young men on our team who do the little things right in an eort to become better teammates and citizens.

Te Silver Star Award

Te Ironman award is symbolized by a round silver decal with an arm raising a dumbbell. I you notice playerswith these decals on the back o their helmet, they have attended 80% or more o the summer weight trainingand conditioning sessions. Tese sessions were held throughout the summer in the early morning hours or allathletes looking to become the best that they can be. Many o our ootball players achieved the 80% benchmarkthis year, and have been awarded the Ironman decal or their eorts. While the true ruit o their labor will be

displayed on the game feld each and every play, we elt it was important to give public recognition or their totaldedication to Horlick athletics.

Many o the orginial leatherhelmets displayed this design pattern in an eort to reinorce the headgear and oer greater protections or teh

athlee. Secondly, it is worn and has become emblematic o such great ootball powers o Michigan Universityand the University o Delaware.Te Wolverines o Michigan are known and respected or their great hard-hittingdeence and the Blue Hens o Delaware are synonomous with the explosive high powered Wing Oense. OurOur Rebel ootball prgam closely identifes with the ootball philosophies with o these great insitutions and takesgreat prie in wearing their symbolic helmet design. We want our student-athlete to know that when they star onthe scarlet and gray wing it reprents: Pride, radition, eam, Discipline, Attide, and oughness. It is also a messageto our opponents, that they will be respected and treated with sportsmanship at all times. We strongly believe that
