Media Commons Fall 2013 Report

Events

The Media Commons annual Tailgate event was held onOctober 4th and attracted 78 participants to attend inperson, which made it our largest Tailgate in several years.24% of attendees were faculty, 4% were librarians, 10%were students, and 59% were staff. 19% of attendeestraveled from the campuses. The keynote presentation wasprovided by Lori Hepner, Associate Professor of IntegrativeArts at Penn State Greater Allegheny and was followed bynine sessions and an interactive new technology room. Asan experiment, the Media Commons also ran Tailgate LIVE!in an effort to reach even more faculty and staff at the

campuses who were not able to travel to University Park for the event. Seven sessions werestreamed to 23 attendees at six campuses.

Several One Button Studio open house events were held at new installations that came online inFall 2013. Traveling consultants hosted three sessions at Altoona, Mont Alto and Abington toring in these first-ever Commonwealth OBS installations.

A brown bag lunch and discussion was held for the Agricultural Economics, Sociology, andEducation department of the College of Agricultural Sciences at University Park. Seven facultyfrom the department attended and listened to one of their colleagues discuss a successful mediaproject they had conducted in conjunction with the Media Commons during the previoussemester. The brown bag events continue to be an excellent method of outreach for UniversityPark.

Mobile Media

Notable Fall 2013 Mobile Media Pilot projects included KNES 068 fromWorthington Scranton, ENGR 397A from University Park, COMM 471 &EDUC 313/314 from Harrisburg, and HDFS 401 from Mont Alto. Furtherdetails on these successful pilots can be found on the Mobile Mediapage.

Facilities

A One Button Studio Lite, a full OBS setup minus the presentationpractice component, was constructed in the College of Agricultural Sciences building atUniversity Park. Work also began on the next full OBS installation in the Pollock building MediaCommons, with an expected completion date of mid-Spring 2014.

Long-time Media Commons consultant at University Park, Lauren Beal, moved on to anotherposition in TLT. To continue staffing the Pollock building Media Commons, Dan Getz moved fromthe Sparks building Media Commons to Pollock and Ariel Siegelman moved from the Pattee LibraryKnowledge Commons to the Sparks building.

Challenges

The biggest challenge facing the Media Commons going forward is that of scale. With the mostsuccessful semester to date in Fall 2013 and staffing changes at University Park, it is a goodopportunity to re-evaluate our staffing needs and how many classes we are able to support in agiven semester across the Commonwealth. Efforts to organize various approaches to addressingthis issue both at UP and the campuses are being solidified in the form of a three-year agilestrategic plan for the Media Commons and will be discussed in the Spring 2014 semester report.

Media Commons Fall 2013 Report

Website Overview

The Media Commons website received a complete redesign during the Spring 2013 semester, launching to the public for the first full semester during Fall 2013. Along with the site relaunchcame both the separation of logging into its own space and the deployment of a new GoogleAnalytics tracking code to address this changed usage of the domain. Because of this clearertracking of public-facing content, changes were made to the site navigation that made findingtop content like the Free Media Library simpler. Brand new content like the Video ProductionTips and other process tutorials was added during Fall 2013 as well as all new interactive trainingModules, creating new growth paths for the Media Commons website going forward.
