Mr John Patrick (Jack) WALSH BEM, deceased, Late of Oatley NSW 2223 For service to the sport of cycling. Proprietor, Jack Walsh International Cycles, Punchbowl, ca1948-2008. Conceived and promoted the Australian Cyclist of the Year Awards, 1979. Introduced the ‘Oppy Award’ in honour of the late Sir Hubert Opperman OBE; these awards remain a feature of Australian cycling. Introduced the Commonwealth Bank to cycling and helped to secure the Bank’s sponsorship for the Commonwealth Bank Cycling Classic. Supporter, Bankstown City Council's bid to have the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games Velodrome constructed in Bankstown, and was instrumental in getting the velodrome named after another great cyclist, Edgar 'Dunc' Gray. In the 1950s and 1960s Mr Walsh promoted 6-day track events in New South Wales and Victoria; these became well known around the world with many world champions competing in the events. Elite cyclist, won 27 Australian and Australasian cycling championships and 19 New South Wales championships, 1940s and 1950s. Life Member, League of New South Wales Wheelmen.
