The makeup air for the trash room exhaust is transferred from the adjacent corridors that are internal to the building. The air being supplied into the corridors at each level will be fully conditioned by the two Rooftop Units (RTUs) and maintained at all times within a temperature range of 70F- 75F, and maximum 50% relative humidity. The two RTUs do not include evaporative coolers. No plumbing fixtures or any other sources of moisture or heat will be installed in the trash rooms on floors L3 through L21. Therefore, air exhausted from the trash rooms will be identical to the air within corridors, and it will not pose a risk of fire or mold growth inside the gypsum exhaust plenum shaft. Also, the building’s operational plan will include signage and policy to prevent residents from leaving trash, or other items that could add moisture in the trash rooms. To ensure no excessive moisture could be present in the gypsum exhaust plenum, the ground level Trash Chute Termination room is decoupled from the trash room exhaust system serving floors L3-L21. This is the only trash room with direct access to outside and unconditioned air. A sheet metal duct will extend from the two exhaust grilles inside the Trash Chute Termination room to the exterior wall for discharge. A dedicated exhaust fan will be serving this room. Please refer to the attached design schedules, floor plans and riser diagrams showing proposed system design. REASON FOR ALTERNATE As proposed, the exhaust system for the trash rooms on floors L3-L21 will always maintain trash exhaust air temperature below the maximum allowed temperature of 125°F, and the gypsum board surface temperature will always be above the airstream dew-point temperature. The air handling units providing makeup air for the trash rooms do not include evaporative coolers. This design will maintain the same occupant safety level within the building as intended by code. Please refer to included calculations included at the end of the appeal that show the exhaust air will never reach the dewpoint in the shaft.

APPEAL ITEM 1 CODE SECTION

2014 OMSC 603.5.1

REQUIRES

2014 OMSC 603.5.1 states “The use of gypsum boards to form air shafts (ducts) shall be limited to return air systems where the air temperatures do not exceed 125ºF (52ºC) and the gypsum board surface temperature is maintained above the airstream dew-point temperature. Air ducts formed by gypsum boards shall not be incorporated in air-handling systems utilizing evaporative coolers.”

PROPOSED DESIGN

The proposed exhaust system for the trash rooms on floors L3 through L21 consists of sheet metal sub-ducts extending 22 inches upward into a dedicated, rated gypsum exhaust plenum shaft. A dedicated exhaust fan is

located on the top of the shaft and it operates 24/7. The makeup air for the trash room exhaust is transferred from the adjacent corridors that are internal to the building. The air being supplied into the corridors at each level will be fully conditioned by the two Rooftop Units (RTUs) and maintained at all times within a temperature range of 70F-75F, and maximum 50% relative humidity.

To ensure no excessive moisture could be present in the gypsum exhaust plenum, the ground level Trash Chute

Termination room is decoupled from the trash room exhaust system serving floors L3-L21.

REASON FOR ALTERNATE

As proposed, the exhaust system for the trash rooms on floors L3-L21 will always maintain trash exhaust air temperature below the maximum allowed temperature of 125°F, and the gypsum board surface temperature will always be above the airstream dew-point temperature. The air handling units providing makeup air for the trash rooms do not include evaporative coolers. This design will maintain the same occupant safety level within the building as intended by code. Please refer to included calculations included at the end of the appeal that show the exhaust air will never reach the dewpoint in the shaft.

The exhaust plenum approach reduces the operating cost and energy usage of the building as compared to sheet metal duct installed within the same shaft area. Due to the space requirements for construction and support of sheet metal duct, the cross-sectional area of the metal duct would be approximately 45% smaller than the area of the gypsum shaft. This reduction in duct area would increase the static pressure of the system, and it would more then double the operating power of the exhaust fan. This would also increase the carbon footprint of the building.

The project’s exhaust ventilation energy use will be substantially reduced by utilizing the proposed gypsum board shaft in lieu of an 18-story tall sheet metal duct. While NFPA 90A is not officially accepted as code in Portland, this internationally recognized standard does allow gypsum plenums to be used as both return and exhaust ducts. NFPA 90A-2018, Section 4.3.1.3.1 states when using gypsum board air ducts that they “shall be permitted to be used for negative pressure exhaust and return ducts where the temperature of the conveyed air does not exceed 52°C (125°F) in normal service.”

The gypsum plenum shaft would require 0.34BHP to exhaust the design airflows. A ducted shaft in the same shaft area is approximately 45% of the cross sectional area. This consequently increases the total static pressure by ~0.3" WG and increase the operation fan power to 0.63BHP, which is roughly 83% higher BHP.

NOTE: FOR CONSTRUCTABILITY WE NEED 4" INSIDE 28x9 RISER TO ATTACH A SHORT RADIUS ELBOW. ALTERNATIVELY WE CAN PROVIDE A 24x9 DUCT AND SMASH THE SUB-DUCT DIRECTLY INSIDE THE DUCTED RISER, BUT THIS IS A LOWER EFFECTIVE NET AREA (HIGHER TSP & HIGHER BHP).

THIS IS WELL ABOVE THE DEWPOINT AND THE SHAFT IS INTERIOR TO THE BUILDING, WHICH MEANS THE SHAFT WALLS ARE APPROXIMATELY THE SAME TEMPERATURE AS THE CORRIDOR AND WILL NOT CAUSE CONDENSATION.
