Mission

The mission of the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) program at North Carolina A&T State University is to prepare our students for the broad practice of mechanical engineering and for graduate education in mechanical engineering and the many related fields such as materials engineering and aerospace engineering.

Educational Objectives

After graduating from the Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering Program, the graduates are expected to be able to:

1. Perform effectively in bioengineering related positions in industry or in graduate/professional schools.2. Demonstrate teamwork and leadership skills in using interdisciplinary approaches for solving

Academic Advising

A faculty member will serve as your academic program advisor. Information about your advisor can be obtained from the MCEN office (Room 618, McNair Hall), or from Aggie Access On-Line http://www.ncat. edu /~registra/webfor.html under Student Records. You should consult with your advisor regarding questions or problems about your program and course scheduling. It is important that you plan your academic program such that you graduate in the minimum possible time.

RegistrationEach semester the University publishes a schedule booklet that includes a class and examination schedule and an academic calendar. You should pick up a copy from the MCEN office and use it to help you plan your courses.

1. Fill in the Course Request Form in the booklet properly by referring to the class schedule. 2. Schedule a time to meet your advisor.3. Take the completed Course Request Form to your advisor for approval and signature. Do not take courses

out of sequence. Refer to the prerequisite flow chart in this handbook.4. On-line course registration can be conducted during the registration period. To use the Aggie Access On-

Line http://www.ncat. edu /~registra/webfor.html , you must obtain a PIN from a secretary in the MCEN Office by presenting a course request form signed by your academic advisor.

Checking Prerequisite/Corequisite RequirementsAll BMEN students are responsible for ensuring that they are taking courses for which the prerequisite/corequisite requirements are satisfied. If a student takes a course without proper prerequisites or corequisites, he or she will receive an “F” grade in that course. To help ensure that you satisfy prerequisites, your instructors may ask you to show your grade reports to them. You should verify prerequisite requirements with your instructors prior to the last day to add so that you will have time to substitute another course if necessary.

Course LoadThe normal course load in Mechanical Engineering is 16 or 17 semester credit hours. For full time status, a undergraduate student is required to carry a minimum of 12 credit hours; however, carrying just this minimum load will mean that you will require more than 8 semesters to complete your degree.

The maximum course load that a student may carry is 18 credit hours unless the student has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, or has a 3.2 semester grade point average while earning 12 or more credit hours in the semester prior to the one for which the overload is requested. The maximum course overload for any student is 21 credit hours. The maximum course load for one 5-week summer session is 7 credit hours.

Repetition of CoursesA student who has received a failing grade in a required course at North Carolina A&T State University must repeat and pass the course unless the Dean of the College/School authorizes a substitute course. No single course may be repeated more than (2) two times. Course withdrawals do not count. Course drops do not count toward the attempts. A course completed with a grade of “C” or higher may not be repeated for a higher grade. Special authorization may be requested, as needed, from the Dean of the appropriate College/School to assist the student with completing requirements for graduation. All grades earned by the student are a part of his/her official academic record and will appear on his/her transcript.

Maximum Course Load for a Student on Academic ProbationThe maximum course load for a student on academic probation is 12 credit hours.

Suspension/ReadmissionA student suspended for academic reasons must stay out one full semester. A suspended student wishing to re-enroll must apply in writing, a minimum of 30 days prior to the semester for which readmission is requested. The department will support readmission requests only if the requestor and advisor have prepared an individualized comprehensive plan of study which affords the student a reasonable chance of success.

Tuition SurchargePlease note that in an effort to improve the four-year graduation rate, the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina system has mandated a tuition surcharge of 25 percent on students who attempt more than 140 degree credit hours to complete a four year baccalaureate degree. Also, an upper limit of 152 attempted credit hours has been established for completing a four-year degree. See the University Bulletin for additional details relating to these requirements.

Maximum Semester Hours Attempted A student is eligible to continue to work toward an undergraduate degree if he or she is in good academic standing and until he or she has attended eleven (11) semesters as a full-time student (not including summer session) or until he or she has attempted 152 semester hours. At that point the student becomes ineligible to continue at the University unless approved by the Dean of the College.

Degree AuditDegree Audit in Aggie Access On-Line http://www.ncat. edu /~registra/webfor.html shows the courses you have taken as well as those remaining to be taken to fulfill graduation requirements. If you have any questions, you should consult with your advisor.

Graduating Under a Given CatalogA student may expect to earn a degree in accordance with the requirements of the curriculum outlined in the catalog in force when he or she first entered the University, provided the courses are being offered. Moreover, he or she must complete these requirements within six years. In addition, he or she may graduate under any subsequent catalog published while he or she is a student. If a student elects to meet the requirements of a catalog other than the one in force at the time of his or her original entry, he or she must meet all requirements of the catalog he or she elects.

Transfer Students

A student who wishes to transfer into the Bioengineering Program from another accredited College or University must meet the following requirements:1. The student must meet all of the University requirements for transfer (see the University Bulletin).2. The student must have a cumulative GPA (grade point average) of 2.5 or above from an ABET accredited

program, or GPA (grade point average) of 3.0 or above from a non-ABET accredited program.3. The University does not accept transfer credit for course work where grades of P/F have been given. No

course is accepted in transfer in which a grade below “C” was earned.4. The maximum number of transferable credits is 80 semester hours from a 4 year program and 64 semester

hours from a 2 year program.Students attending community colleges who intend to transfer to the BMEN program should be enrolled at their community college in Pre-Engineering programs for their Associate in Science Degree, not in one of the engineering technologies programs which are intended for students to acquire entry-level job skills.

Change of MajorStudents may transfer from other departments of the University to the Bioengineering Program with written approval and acceptance of the Chairperson of the Department and the Dean of the College of Engineering. The proper forms needed to apply for such a change can be obtained from the Office of the Registrar and must be executed at least six weeks prior to the beginning of the semester in which the student plans to begin the new major. New transfer students should report to the Bioengineering Chairman or Program Director for advising. The following department requirements must be satisfied by any student considering changing his/her major to Bioengineering:

1. The student must have a 2.5 or higher overall grade point average, and must have completed MATH 131 with a "C" or better.

2. Any 500-level or above courses in Bioengineering may be taken only by Engineering Majors.3. A student may be disqualified from transferring to Bioengineering if he/she has taken any courses out of

sequence or without the proper prerequisites.

Conditionally Admitted FreshmenStudents who are unable to meet the admission criteria based on SAT/ACT and high school GPA will be conditionally admitted. Based on deficiencies, conditionally admitted students will be advised to register for additional freshman level courses prior to taking required courses and may even be advised to take a reduced course load. Students should consult their advisor for specific requirements. It should be noted that these

students may not be able to graduate in four years. All students admitted under this policy will undergo an academic review after two semesters of full time enrollment.

Based on a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a “C” or better in Math 131, GEEN 100, CHEM 106, and UNST 130, conditionally admitted freshmen will be unconditionally admitted to BMEN. Students who do not meet the requirements of the one-year review will be transferred to The Center for Academic Excellence for further advisement.

International ProgramsStudy Abroad

All students in good academic standing at NC A&T may study abroad for one or two semesters. Most programs require a minimum 2.0 GPA. However, there are programs that require a higher GPA. You may apply to study abroad after your first semester on campus and complete study abroad before your last semester as a senior. The credits earned abroad are transferred to North Carolina A&T toward your degree requirements.

Global Studies Certificate

NCA&T requires all students to take one Global Studies course to complete their core requirements. The Global Studies Certificate Program (http://www.ncat.edu/~oip/global.htm) is an interdisciplinary program designed to provide students the opportunity to better prepare themselves to live and work in a global society. The Global Studies Certificate can be earned while fulfilling the academic requirements for an NCA&T degree in every discipline.

UNST Theme-Based Courses

Students are required to complete 12 credit hours within a single thematic cluster. If a student decides to change to a different thematic cluster, he/she will have to satisfy all the course requirements for the new cluster. The Dean of University Studies will consider exceptions to this rule based on individual petitions. Theme-based courses are communication intensive (oral and written) and emphasize interdisciplinary learning motivated by societal issues and problems. Course descriptions of approved thematic courses offered by departments outside of University Studies can be found in the requisite sections of the Bulletin.

UNST/General EducationUNST 100. University Experience Credit 1(1-0). This seminar emphasizes the role of the University Studies program and presents a broad overview of the curriculum structure and rationale, including an introduction to a variety of interdisciplinary themes within the University Studies program. Introductory discussions on ethics, wellness and healthy lifestyles, diversity and civic engagement will be included.

UNST 110. Critical Writing Credit 3(3-0). This course introduces students to reading comprehension and the writing process. Students will read and evaluate selected texts and apply critical thinking through writing and speaking. Students will engage in formal and informal writing, revise drafts and respond to constructive feedback related to critical thinking skills, use grammar and conventions of standard written English. All students will develop a writing portfolio for course assessment.

UNST 120. The Contemporary World Credit 3(3-0). This course examines the social, economic, political, and cultural roots of the contemporary world. It focuses on the major developments, events, and ideas that have shaped world societies since the beginning of the twentieth century. Close attention will be given to the concepts and categories that allow students to grasp the nature and development of the contemporary world, thus providing them with a framework for understanding the contemporary global experience. The course helps students to develop critical thinking skills in their oral and written work and to use information technology effectively.

UNST 130. Analytical Reasoning Credit 3(3-0). This course engages students in scientific, quantitative, and

logical reasoning processes to prepare them to interpret and solve problems encountered in everyday life. Students will consider concepts from logic and the scientific disciplines including life, social, and physical sciences. The scientific method and a variety of analytical approaches are explored, including numerical, graphical, verbal/logical, and algebraic reasoning.

UNST 140. The African American Experience: An Interdisciplinary Perspective Credit 3(3-0). This interdisciplinary course introduces students to the important contributions made and challenges faced by people of African descent in America and the global community. This course will focus on oral, written, and visual means of expression as a basis for discussion, analysis, and debate.

BIOL 101. Concepts of Biology Credit 4(3-2). This course is an introduction to science and the scientific method, basic biochemistry, cell structure and function, energy and metabolism, reproduction and genetics, evolution, life's diversity, and basic ecological principles for those students planning to enroll in additional major courses in the biological sciences. The laboratory will emphasize central biological concepts. Prerequisite: Credit or concurrent enrollment in CHEM 106 and 116.

BIOL 401. Molecular Biology (Formerly BIOL 201) Credit 4(2-4). This course examines the molecular events in cell function using molecular genetics, cell biology, and fundamental biochemistry; using both prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems. The laboratory will emphasize fundamental techniques used in molecular biology. Prerequisites: BIOL 101 and CHEM 107.

CHEM 106. General Chemistry VI* Credit 3(3-0). This is a course which emphasizes basic principles and important theoretical concepts of chemistry. Topics will include atomic structure, electronic configuration, the wave mechanical model of the atom, chemical bonding, states of matter, chemical equilibria, systems of acids and bases, and electrochemistry. Prerequisites: 2 units of high school algebra or equivalent, and 1 unit of high school chemistry or CHEM 099. Corequisite: CHEM 116.

CHEM 107. General Chemistry VII Credit 3(3-0). This course is a continuation of CHEM 106. It includes chemistry of important metals and nonmetals and a rigorous treatment of qualitative inorganic analysis. Prerequisite: CHEM 106 or equivalent. Corequisite: CHEM 117.

CHEM 116. General Chemistry VI Laboratory Credit 1(0-3). This is a course which emphasizes quantitative studies of chemical reactions such as acid-base studies, redox reactions, and equilibrium reactions. Emphasis is also placed on the development of manipulative skills in the laboratory. Corequisite: CHEM 106.

CHEM 117. General Chemistry VII Laboratory Credit 1(0-3). This is a continuation of CHEM 116 with an introduction to the qualitative analysis. Corequisite: CHEM 117

CHEM 221. Organic Chemistry I Credit 3(3-0). This course is a study of the hydrocarbons (aliphatic and aromatic) and introduction to their derivatives. Prerequisite: CHEM 102, 105, or 107.

CHEM 223. Organic Chemistry I Laboratory Credit 2(0-4) This laboratory course emphasizes the study of physical and chemical properties of aliphatic and aromatic compounds. Modern instrumentation such as gas and column chromatography, infrared and ultraviolet analyses are used. Corequisite CHEM 221

PHYS 241. General Physics I Credit 3(4-0). This is a calculus-based physics course that covers the fundamental principles of Newtonian mechanics, heat, and thermodynamics. Corequisites: MATH 132, PHYS

PHYS 242. General Physics II Credit 3(4-0). This is a continuation of PHYS 241. It is a calculus-based study of physics, which covers the fundamental principles of electricity, magnetism, wave motion, and optics. Corequisite: PHYS 252.

PHYS 251. General Physics I Lab Credit 1(0-2). This is a laboratory course where a selected group of physics experiments will be performed. Emphasis is placed on the development of experimental technique, analysis of data, and physical interpretation of experimental results. Corequis ite: PHYS 241.

PHYS 252. General Physics II Lab Credit 1(0-2). This course is a continuation of PHYS 251. Corequisite: PHYS 242.

MathMATH 131. Calculus I Credit 4(4-0)Limits and continuity of functions, the derivative, applications of the derivative, the definite integral and applications of the definite integral will be studied. Prerequisite: MATH 110 or appropriate approval.

MATH 132. Calculus II Credit 4(4-0). Topics in analytic geometry, differentiation and integration of exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, inverse trigonometric and hyperbolic functions, additional techniques and applications of integration, indeterminate forms, improper integrals, Taylor’s Formula and infinite series will be studied. Prerequisite: MATH 131.

MATH 231. Calculus III Credit 4(4-0). This course will cover plane curves and polar coordinates, vector and solid geometry, vector valued functions, partial differentiation, multiple integrals, applications of multiple integrals and vector analysis. Prerequisite: MATH 132

MATH 431. Introduction to Differential Equations Credit 3(3-0). This course will cover first order differential equations, higher order linear differential equations, matrices and determinants, systems of linear algebraic equations, systems of linear differential equations, and Laplace transforms. Prerequisite: MATH 132.

General Engineering

GEEN 100. Engineering Design and Ethics Credit 2(2-0). This course introduces students to engineering and computer science disciplines and functions, professional licensure, the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, code of ethics, safety, the design process, creative thinking, teamwork, and technical writing. A case study on ethics and the application of the design process through a team project are required.

GEEN 161. Computer Programming for Engineering Credit 2(1-2). Students will use engineering and mathematical computer applications to solve engineering problems. Students will solve numerical problems and learn to use the computer for engineering design.

MEEN 104. Graphics for Engineers Credit 2(2-2). This is an introductory course in computer aided graphics and design for mechanical engineers. This course will familiarize students with conventions of 2-D graphical representation of mechanical components and 3-D solid modeling. Prerequisites: None. (F;S)

MEEN 313. Statics and Mechanics of Materials Credit 3(2-2). This is an introductory course in statics and mechanics of materials for non-mechanical engineering majors. It provides a just-in-time approach to the study of characteristics of forces and couples, and their effects on equilibrium, strains, and stresses in solid bodies. Relationships between loads and deformations are also presented. Prerequisites: MATH 131, PHYS 241

CHEN 300 . Fluid Mechanics Credit 3(2-2). This course examines the continuum concept, fluid statics, mass and momentum balances, the Bernoulli Equation, dimensional analysis, pipe flow problems, the design and the selection of pumps and the three forms of drag. Boundary layer flows, compressible flow and flow measurement devices are reviewed. Prerequisites: MATH 231, PHYS 241 (both with C or higher), and course equivalent to MEEN 416. (F;S;SS)

CHEN 312 Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics Credits 4 (3-2) The course is a study of thermodynamics principles with special emphasis on chemical process applications and equilibria. Topics included are the first and second laws, properties of single and multi-component systems, expansion and compression of fluids, heat engines, thermodynamics of flow processes, phase equilibria and chemical reaction equilibria. Prerequisites: CHEN 200, MATH 231 (both with C or higher grade) (F;S;SS)

CHEN 318. Analysis of Chemical Process Data Credits 2(2-0). The course introduces contemporary computational methods and tools for designing experiments and analysis of data. The course covers statistical inference, empirical models, strategies for efficient experimentation and their applications in chemical engineering process analysis. Statistical methods including error analysis, curve fitting and regression, analysis of variance, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, and control charts are covered. Prerequisites: MATH 132 (with C or higher grade) (F;S;SS)

ELEN 440. Electrical Circuits and Systems Credit 3 (3-0). This course covers power and energy concepts; basic R, RC, RL, and RLC circuits; three phase circuits; ideal transformers; diodes and ideal op amp circuits; and logic circuits. The Laplace transform method will be introduced and used to solve circuit problems. Prerequisites: MATH 431 and PHYS 242.

CHEN 501. General Engineering Topics Review Credits 1(0-3)The course covers and reviews the engineering topics included in the General Engineering sections of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. BMEN 220 Introduction to Bioengineering Credit 3(3-0)This course is an introduction to the application of engineering principles (including numerical methods) to solve problems in medicine, the integration of engineering with biology, and the emerging industrial opportunities. Examples from a variety of engineering disciplines will be provided. The ethical concerns associated with some emerging life science applications will be explored. Prerequisites: MATH 131, BIOL 101, CHEM 106.

BMEN 320 Human Physiology for Engineers Credit 3(3-0)This course introduces the functions of nerves, muscle, intercellular communication, and the functions of the following systems: cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, and gastrointestinal. Each system discussed will be integrated into the larger function of homeostasis, their adaptation during pathology, and equivalent models in an engineering context. Prerequisites: BMEN 220.

BMEN 321 Biomechanics Credit 3(3-0)This course applies concepts of statics, dynamics, and mechanics of materials to human activities and tissues. Course topics will include musculoskeletal anatomy; analysis of forces in static biological systems; linear and angular dynamics of human movement; application of stress and strain analysis to biological tissues. Prerequisites: BMEN 220, Corequisites MEEN 313.

BMEN 325 Bioengineering Lab Credit 2(0-6)This course will illustrate the basic principles of Bioengineering through hands-on weekly laboratory experiments. Prerequisites: Junior standing in Bioengineering.

BMEN 410 Biomedical Imaging and Devices Credit 3(3-1)This course will introduce students to modern topics in Bioengineering and areas of emphasis in biomedical measurement tools. Also will introduce the major imaging modalities used in clinical medicine and biomedical research, as well as the fundamentals of images from a signals and systems standpoint The course will include a lecture and a laboratory component. Prerequisites: BMEN 210, BMEN 320, ELEN 440

BMEN 411 Biotransport Credit 4(2-2)This course explores the similarities between the fundamental principles of momentum, heat, and mass transfer, develops analogies between the fundamentals that apply at microscopic and macroscopic scales, and uses the fundamentals in conjunction with conservation laws to develop mathematical descriptions of physiological and engineering systems. Prerequisites: CHEN 300, CHEN 312.

BMEN 420 Linear Systems in Bioengineering Credit 3(3-0)Fundamentals of linear systems analysis as applied to problems in biomedical modeling and instrumentation. Topics covered include properties of biomedical systems and signals; representation of continuous- and discrete-time signals and system response; convolution; Fourier analysis in continuous and discrete domains; Laplace transform; Frequency response and its application in biomedical systems; filter design; circuit analogs to mechanical and thermodynamics systems and their applications in modeling biomedical systems; applications in biomedical instrumentation; use of MATLAB to simulate and analyze biomedical linear systems. Prerequisites: GEEN 161, BMEN 320, BMEN 411.

BMEN 495 Senior Capstone Design I Credit 3(1-4)This two-semester design course provides an opportunity to synthesize and extend the skills and knowledge acquired during undergraduate education toward design (or redesign) of a biomedical product or service in a team environment. In this course students will be exposed to key facets of medical product design and will develop an understanding of the unique requirements of this profession. Prerequisites: Senior standing or consent of instructor.

BMEN 496 Senior Capstone Design II Credit 3(1-4)This is the second half of the two-semester design course providing an opportunity to synthesize and extend the skills and knowledge acquired during undergraduate education toward design (or redesign) of a biomedical product or service. This course is a study of the traditional, classical areas of genetics as well as an introduction to gene action at the molecular level, including DNA and RNA structure, function and interactions in cellular systems. CHEM 251. Elementary Biochemistry Credit 2(2-0)This course is a study of fundamental cellular constituents. Emphasis is placed on shysiological application and analysis. Prerequisite: CHEM 221, Corequisite: CHEM 252

CHEM 252. Elementary Biochemistry Lab oratory Credit 1(0-3)Elementary biochemical reaction are studied with emphasis placed on applications to biology, home economics and nursing. Prerequisite: CHEM 223, Corequisite: CHEM 251

CHEM 451. Biotechniques in Biochemistry Credit 3(3-0). This course will emphasize the fundamental concepts and basic principles of biological chemistry. Topics will include acid-base properties of amino acids, protein structure and function, kinetic analysis of enzymatic reactions, isolation and characterization of biomolecules, recombinant DNA technology, and computer graphics and structure calculations. Prerequisite: CHEM 222 or permission of the instructor.

CHEM 452. Biotechniques in Biochemistry Laboratory Credit 2(0-6). This is a laboratory course that introduces the basic principles, technologies, and instrumentation of current biochemical reserach. Students will acquire practical experiences, and application skills for the isolation and characterization of biomolecules. The course will encompass spectroscopic, chromatographic, electrophoretic, and recombinant DNA technologies. Error analysis and statistical analysis of experimental data will be included. Prerequisites: CHEM 224 and 252, or permission of the instructor.

PHYS 450. Wave and Optics Credit 3(3-0). This course explores wave phenomena. It covers the propagation, reflection, and refraction of light and includes studies of lenses and optical instruments, interference, diffraction, polarization, line spectra, and thermal radiation.Prerequisites: PHYS 242.

BIOE 522 Food Engineering Credit 2(2-0) The general engineering principles of solids, fluids, and process equipment are discussed. Topic include energy, heat enthalpy, pyschometrics, heat and mass transfer, drying and refrigeration of food products. Prerequisites: CHEM 107

BMEN 520 Introduction to Tissue Engineering Credit 3 (3-0)This course is designed to introduce students to an understanding of tissue engineering (TE), and the biomaterials, cells and growth factors used in TE. Specific applications include skin, nerve, bone, and soft tissue regeneration. Throughout the course ties are made between the topic of study and clinically relevant situations. Prerequisites: Senior standing or consent of instructor.

BMEN 521 Biomechanics of Organs, Tissues, and Cells Credit 3 (3-0)Modern biomechanics is an increasingly diverse field that encompasses the mechanics of the whole human body and all the way to the cellular and molecular levels. This comprehensive course covers the application of solid mechanics to describe the mechanical behavior of organs, soft biological tissues, and cells. The course will introduce fundamental concepts and techniques of mechanics (e.g. stress, strain, constitutive relations), and of the structure and composition of tissues and cells. The course will then focus on the mechanical properties of specific tissues, (e.g. tendon, muscle, heart, vascular) and cells (e.g. blood cells, valular interstitial cells). Prerequisites: Senior standing or consent of instructor.

BMEN 550 Co-operative Industrial Experience in Engineering Credit 3(0-6)This course is a supervised learning experience in a private or governmental medical facility or a company that produces Biomedical products or services the Biomedical industry. Students must complete a combination of three co-op/internship with at least one session being a semester co-op. Course requirements include the students evaluation of each co-op/intern session and an oral report summarizing the work experiences will be presented to a faculty committee. Prerequisite: Senior standing.

CHEN 320. Heat Transfer Credits 3(2-2) The course covers the fundamentals of heat conduction, convection, radiation, boiling and condensation, and heat exchangers. Design and safety aspects of heat transfer equipment will be covered. Prerequisites: CHEN 300, MATH 431 (with a grade of “C” or higher), and course equivalent to MEEN 562. (F;S;SS)

CHEN 325. Introduction to Chemical Process Simulation Credits 1(0-2). The course is an introduction to the use of a chemical process simulator. Computer-aided mass and energy balances are emphasized. Ideal models for mixing, reaction and separation are used. Students learn to prepare process streams to feed the above processing operations. Students are introduced to computer-aided thermodynamic property analysis for pure and multi-component systems. Students study vapor-liquid and liquid-liquid equilibrium using various thermodynamic models. Currently, the ASPEN PLUS simulation package is used. Prerequisites: CHEN 200 (with C or higher grade), Corequisite: CHEN 312 (F;S;SS)

CHEN 565. Introduction to Polymer Science and Engineering Credit 3(3-0). This course introduces students to engineering technology of polymeric materials, and science and engineering of large molecules. Students learn about control of significant variables in polymer synthesis, and physical methods for characterization of molecular weight, morphology, rheology and mechanical behavior. Engineering applications include additives, blends and composites, natural polymers and fibers, thermoplastics, elastomers and thermosets, polymer degradation and stability, polymers in the environment, and polymers for advanced technologies , such as, membrane separations, biomedical devices, electronic and photonic industry. CHEN 330. Chemical Engineering Laboratory I Credits 2(0-5)Students conduct laboratory studies on unit operations involving fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer. The studies include open-ended experiments and comparisons between theory and experimental results. Statistical analysis of data, experimental design, laboratory safety and quality reporting are stressed. Students are required to complete formal and informal reports and make oral presentations with visual aids. Prerequisites: CHEN 318, Corequisite: CHEN 320. (F;S)

CHEN 340. Process Dynamics and Control Credits 3(2-2) The course covers the methods for controlling chemical process equipment including the dynamic response of process equipment and systems. Simulation methods are stressed in the design of control systems. Modes of control, controller characteristics and control loop design are stressed. Computer control and statistical process control are introduced. Prerequisites: MATH 431, CHEN 300 (with a grade of “C” or higher) and 310. Corequisite: CHEN 320. (S)

CHEN 400. Mass Transfer Operations Credits 3(2-2). The course is a study of diffusion, diffusional operations and stagewise separation principles. Topics include the quantitative treatment and design of mass transfer equipment involving equilibrium stage contacting. Operations included are distillation, absorption, and extraction. Additional operations, such as, ion exchange, drying, humidification, chromatography and membrane separation may be included at the instructor’s discretion. Prerequisite: CHEN 320 (with a grade of “C” or higher), CHEN 220, CHEN 312. (F,S,SS)

ELEN 320. Electronics I Credit 3 (3-0). This course is an introduction to electronic circuit design. It covers basic amplifiers, diode circuits, dc biasing and mid-frequency response of bipolar junction transistor (BJT) and field effect transistor (FET) amplifiers. The terminal behavior, and linear and nonlinear modeling of these devices are emphasized. Prerequisite: ELEN 200.

ELEN 327. Digital Logic Credit 3 (3-0). This course involves the study of fundamental combinational and sequential logic circuit analysis/design. Combinational concepts covered include Boolean algebra, k-maps, basic logic gates, and small/medium scale integrated circuits. Sequential concepts covered include basic latches/flip-flops, counters, memory registers, and basic synchronous systems.

ELEN 328. Digital Logic Laboratory Credit 1 (0-3). This course deals with the implementation of basic combinational and sequential logic systems. Small and Medium scale integrated circuits utilized in addition to Programmable logic devices. Corequisite: ELEN 327.

INEN 371. Human Factors Engineering I Credit 2(1-2). This course introduces ergonomics and biomechanics concepts. Topics include psychomotor work capabilities, anthropometry, environmental stressor, physical workload, safety, hazard and risk factors identification, work station design, and material handling. Data collection methods and report writing are emphasized. Lab projects are required. Prerequisites: Junior or Senior Standing

INEN 372. Human Factors Engineering II Credit 2(1-2). This course introduces elements of cognitive human factors. Topics include human sensation and perception, cognition, information processing, attention signal detection theory, mental workload, and decision-making. Lab projects are required. Prerequisites: Junior or Senior StandingMEEN 360. Fundamentals of Materials Science Credit 3(3-0). This course explores the relationships between the structure of materials and their properties and performance. Topics include crystal structure, defects and characterization at the micro as well as nano scale, phase diagrams and phase transformations, physical properties including mechanical, electrical, optical and magnetic properties, and chemical properties including corrosion and environmental issues. Emerging advanced materials, such as multifunctional polymers, biomaterials, composites, and nanomaterials are discussed. Prerequisites: CHEM 106 and MATH 131. (F;S)
