Measuring the Economic Importance of the Meetings Industry
Developing a Tourism Satellite Account Extension
Why do we need this project?
• We do make a sizable contribution to economies
• But we simply cannot quantify it accurately
• And is officially recognised
• Data collection has huge gaps
• Misleading, inconsistent
• But not all bad
• Some countries are collecting data regularly
• We are not starting from zero!
Why do we need to measure industry precisely?
• The way to acquire regonition / respect for the Industry
• Without it the Meetings Industry will be ‘poor relation’
• Not considered a mainstream economic driver
• This is the reason why:
• ICCA, MPI, RTE working with the UNWTO
• Backed by other leading national / international industry associations
Tourism Satellite Accounting or TSA
• Recommending a form of TSA
• Already an officially accepted measurement framework
• Meets strict international criteria
• Collating data in the same way with same definitions
What does this mean for me?When will it be delivered?
• Slow burn
• The Industry will have to be patient
• Already been working on this for more than three years
• Report has been published
• But now needs everyone to get behind the initiative
Where can I get the report?
• Two versions
• Detailed comprehensive report
• Summary document… (for those that do not have time to read the whole report!)
• Download from partners websites:
www.mpiweb.org
www.icca.org
www.reedtravelexhibitions.com
www.eibtm.com
Who will collect the data?
• Government agencies
• As part of the national statistics collation
• But, again, they will need everyone’s help
• 150 UNWTO member states
• But also need to involve all countries
• Mature and emerging markets
Using the same words and definitions (wherever you are in the world)
• Report recommendations include:– Meetings Industry – attracts considerable
support
– Meetings aims – motivate participants to conduct business, share ideas, learn, network and discuss
– Meeting size – Minimum of 10 participants
– Meeting venue – venue where there is a payment
– Meeting duration – half day (4 hours) or more
Next steps
• Work on what data needs to be collated
• But initiative now part of major communications campaign
• Needs to be the subject of industry forums at all levels
• Partners will welcome feedback
Steering group
• Christian Mutschlechner, Immediate Past President, ICCA
• Didier Scaillet, Director of European Operations and Global Development, MPI
• Geoffrey Lipman, Assistant Secretary-General, UNWTO
• Antonio Massieu, Head of the UNWTO Department of Statistics and Economic Measurement of Tourism
• Carlos Romero, Executive Director, Affiliate Members, UNWTO
• Tom Nutley, Chairman, Reed Travel Exhibitions
• They need your feedback! Either directly through them or via the Joint Meetings Industry Council
The future is yours
BUT ONLY IF WE WORK TOGETHER
