Our Story

Active Minds was founded by Ben Atkinson-Willes after his grandfather developed Alzheimer’s. Ben searched for activities that might provide his grandfather with the same sense of satisfaction his personal hobbies once had.When he discovered there were no age-appropriate products on the market for people experiencing symptoms of cognitive decline or visual impairment, Ben set up Active Minds to design, test and deliver activity products specifically for the needs of people with dementia.Active Minds now develop a range of products to suit both professional and home care settings.

First things first, we open our eyes, notice, listen and learn; investigating notions and gathering many ideas.

Discover

Our most compelling ideas are developed and refined, becoming product prototypes. We use the prototypes to test whether these ideas are successful and use the feedback gathered during testing to further refine the design.

Design

An activity product can now be delivered - everything about the final product and its packaging is considered and refined, based on the feedback received in the project’s prior testing phase.

Deliver

We examine the designs being used in both professional and personal care settings, we run continuous cycles of design and testing until we are happy our products deliver the best possible levels of interaction and engagement.

Test

We follow a design process that is inspired by, and developed with people living with dementia, their family, carers and industry experts to ensure all of our products meet their needs.

Aquapaint is a reusable water painting product designed and developed by Active Minds as a creative, mess-free, therapeutic art activity which can help maintain independence and instil a sense of satisfaction and pride.

Every Aquapaint collection comes with five different canvases each with a beautifully painted image that can be magically revealed using just a paintbrush and some water. Once painted, the canvases can be left to dry until the image fades and the canvas returns back to white, ready to be used time and again.

By designing the bingo around animals instead of numbers, we found a common theme that was a much stronger connection than a numerical cue.

Sounds

Authentic sounds are used to allow someone to hear the animal first. We used very real versions of sounds to make them reminiscent and age appropriate.

Sounds are combined with illustrations in a flip book as each animal is played. This supports both people with poor eyesight and poor hearing to continue playing.
